So firstly, there was a big update to fix bugs in late 2022 I believe, and the gave is now perfectly playable. You can make curvy, and chubby body types, and they all look hot. It's also got lots of cute animals, and you can glide around with a raven on your head. It's also just bizarre a lot of the time, and not really like other games. Definitely worth it on sale. Expand

This game is cute, and it is clunky. If you're looking for a management sim, this isn't it. Calico is a game where you can decorate a cat cafe and fulfill requests for townsfolk. They character designs are adorable, the world is vibrantly colored (though sometimes a little too saturated in my own personal tastes), and it's pretty easy to control. There are graphical glitches, and character collision is weird. Animals flop around in ways that look painful sometimes. I had a glitch where an animal I needed to pick up and take somewhere for a side quest just didn't let me interact with it after I tried to assign it to my party. This was fixed by turning it off and back on again, but it's a picture of the kind of thing you can expect. In addition, some quests will accept work you've already done but most want you to work on the quest only after it is asked of you even if you intuited what needed to be done. Also, sometimes it's pretty unclear what you're supposed to do next. All this being said, it's still adorable. That is its main selling point, if you need something simple and easy without strife more complex or stressful than "I'm a catgirl now and I don't like water anymore, but my friend still wants me to come swimming!" then this game might be a good distraction. Combining cats and other likeable creatures with a café should be a winning formula, but unfortunately Calico fails to offer an enjoyable time. Cute graphics and inventive concepts alone do not excuse the multitude of issues that give the game a feel of a draft version, rather than a finished product despite post-launch updates. Perhaps one day running a cat café will run like a dream, instead of a cute-themed nightmare.

What sounded like the combination of a management game, Animal Crossing, and The Sims turned out to be barely influenced by all three. If you’re looking for a relaxing Switch game where you can collect clothing, decorate your home, and hang out with animals, there is already the perfect game for you: Animal Crossing New Horizons. If you’ve already played it to the point of needing new joysticks, then there are plenty of other indie alternatives to pick up before giving Calico consideration.

While Calico‘s current state is vastly improved from its initial release thanks to these patches, its initial launch state can’t just be swept under the rug. But the continued effort to improve the game, combined with its welcoming, comforting, and charming nature shining through these unpleasant mats of fur, makes it clear that Peachy Keen Games is a developer with a lot of potential — and I can’t wait to see what they can do in the future with more experience.
