The game only crashed twice in my playthrough (25 hours), and overall I had a really good time exploring the giant metroidvania castle and experimenting with all the cool weapons and items. I only paid $29 for Bloodstained, and at this price the game is a bargain! I can understand all the negative reviews this game has received on Switch, but honestly I still thoroughly enjoyed my playthrough. Although I enjoyed the gameplay and exploration during my playthrough, the crashes and loading time made me unlikely to recommend this game to people on this platform. Hopefully these get fixed in the future.

This is a good game that is heavily influenced by late 90's/early 00's Metroidvania titles like Castlevania Symphony of the Night and Aria of Sorrow. Developed by Koji Igarashi with Michiru Yamane creating the soundtrack, as with the aforementioned titles developed under their stewardship, Bloodstained follows the same basic design that seamlessly blends RPG mechanics with Metroid type exploration. While these old tropes flare the nostalgia senses I do get the feeling the Metroidvania subgenre has seen it's bar moved considerably in recent times - largely thanks to near AAA epics like Hollow Knight and a long queue of creative and novel contemporary indie titles clamoring for that podium. Bloodstained thus lacks that freshness of innovation, preferring to embrace the old while doing little more than the bare minimum regarding something new. Despite this, the gameplay is tight and solid, combat is fun and engaging, there are a plethora of weapon and elemental options, as well as crafting activities to engage in. As with many Koji Igarashi titles, the curious gamer that engages in grinding will be rewarded for his/her effort. The gamer is spared handholding and it is possible to rush through and engage in boss battles when the character level and equipment are too weak for the task. This can make the game appear unfair or very challenging - with the occasionally punishing battles ostensibly appearing to have been won or lost by chance. Conversely, if you play the game as one would an expansive RPG, exploring each subsection thoroughly, battling weaker enemies for levelling up perks, the game proves never to be unfair or punishing. The game in this regard only punishes the impatient. The soundtrack produced by Michiru Yamane perfectly compensates the gameplay and is audio magnificence. Songs range from the bombastic guitar work reminiscent of a classic Y's game to somniferous dulcet tones where environmental noises are given front stage for the level atmospherics. The graphics adopt that contemporary 2.5D style applying rasterization technology although I personally would have preferred hand drawn graphics or pixel art in a style similar to Record of Lodoss War-Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth. Nonetheless the graphics in Bloodstained, at least the PC and PS4 version, are largely very good. This leads us to the main gripe with the Switch port of Bloodstained. The graphics run at much lower settings than that of the PC game (and PS4). On the small screen in portable mode it is fine but on a large panel like a 60" plus TV, the graphics look like a PS2 game adorned with extra bling, washed out low resolution textures and assets, jaggies and all. The frame rate for the Switch port is also capped at 30fps and in some areas the frame rate will dip into the low 20's. This aspect does not kill the experience - it is a single player title but it goes without say I would definitely have preferred a smooth 30fps experience, perhaps ideally a 60fps experience. The graphics are only a tragedy if you bother to run the Switch version side by side with the PC or PS4/Xbox version. Without that point of calibration, just play the game and enjoy it for what it is. In portable mode it proves to be an adequate port for one that glosses over the graphical fidelity (playing a game is surely more fun than counting pixels?). Graphical fidelity aside, this is largely the same experience as one would have on the PC/PS4/Xbox. No levels were chopped out and the game is as complete as the other ports. If you want to have a version of Bloodstained on the go, this Switch port will definitely do the job. If all you have is a Switch, buy this game and enjoy, ignore the haters and review bombing this game received. This is a good perhaps occasionally great Metroidvania title. On the PC I would have given it an 8.5/10, but due to the graphical problems and glitches, I feel inclined to drop the score for the Switch port by a letter grade. 7.5/10 (rounded to 8 since Metacritic does not do halves). A good game slightly marred by the stingy visual aesthetics of the Switch. This will be a case of YMMV. Expand

The game is awesome, the music and game-play are definitely the better things of it. The plot and graphics are fine for a switch game, some scenes and zones of the castle are very nice, but sometimes you want to have better textures and cool cinematic cut-scenes. Highly recommend to clear 100% of the game, specially if you like exploration and collecting.

The variety of weapons and shards is almost overwhelming, but its really fun to try them all. And leveling and upgrading is addictive as hell.
One small gripe is getting to the real ending is pretty obscure. I also had some issues with crashing, but it was always in the main village area after I already saved. Extremely annoying, but the game is so good it more than makes up for it.

On the Switch it's probably the worst performance of any system, but far more demanding games run better than this on the Switch. Please, either stick to a lower-res and/or use of 2D art or optimize the hell out of the engine, because my GBA runs the same sophistication of *gameplay* at a higher frame rate. The load times and input delays are definitely what bother me the most about the Switch version of the game. Fighting bosses is quite the pain when the character moves 0.2 sec after you try to dodge something, and some of those rooms take several seconds to load leaving you with just a black screen in the meantime.

Game has potential but definitely needs a patch. From what I've seen on their social media, they are shifting their efforts to improve this port, which is encouraging. I will potentially increase my rating to a 7 or 8 if the game ends up running smoothly. I would recommend waiting a month or two before buying that version of the game.

I was able to complete this game with no game breaking glitches and no crashes. I would often switch from dock to handheld because being a daddy means I have to play games where ever and when ever. Maybe when it first came out it was a hot mess, but as of now, it's great!
The music is superb, however, there was one area where I felt like the music was half-baked and could've done a better job setting the mood. The rest of the soundtrack sounds like it was ripped straight out of a Castlevania game.
Some of the weapons felt pointless. I REALLY wanted to use her legs the entire game, but the boot upgrades were always lesser than most of the swords I picked up. Also, I wish that the food I could eat for health would give me an HP count prior to cooking my ingredients so I didn't waste things cooking food that wouldn't help me in battle.
I was able to play this game to 100% completion in about 22 hrs.

Many aspects on screen are low resolution. The backgrounds can look very nice though.

The systems are fun but there's so much holding this back. Most of the issues are just about execution.

The merchants and portal at your home base are too far apart seem hardly an issue if you can put up with everything else. The controls are a bit clunky but that's expected from a Castlevania experience.

A lot of enemies are recolours of each other, after the first few bosses the variety drops massively. Occasionally in the later hidden areas you'll find new things.

I beat the "final" boss with less than half the map completed and tried to get more of it done. Got stuck at Zangetsu and the Carpenter and felt that those bosses weren't fun enough to continue. It's a shame that a lot of people won't get to play some of the later hidden areas because Oriental Lab is cool and adds a new environmental mechanic and the flip ability is an incredibly clever and cool idea in a metroidvania and it's always fun to use.

I know the true ending should be hard to get but one of the essential items is in a chest that is not depicted on the map like most chests.

When looking at the map, you can't see the names of locations — only when looking at the map at a warp point.

I could probably go on with more issues.

By the time the final performance update drops it will be those who snatch the game at a sale price that will ultimately benefit the most. There’s a 1.04 update that is expected by the end of November, and I would bet money that it won’t be the last. It’s a real shame because underneath the stigma of a troubled release and a lost first impression of a polished product, lies a potentially magnificent game that holds true to what it once ambitiously set out to achieve.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a game that many fans wanted and it does a very good job when it comes to its fan service duties. If only the game’s performance matched its level of challenge, this would be an unforgettable, indispensable title but unfortunately, Ritual of the Night’s framerate drops and strange inconsistencies make this an experience that could have been much more of a breeze. Fans of Metroidvania games will still find plenty to be happy about it, though.
