Atelier Firis DX is a unique Atelier game in its structure that holds its own, even where later games improve on what it started. Like Sophie, it doesn’t transform the series. Ryza improves on most of the things Firis experiments with too, but Firis offers a unique take on the series’ structure that's refreshing and engaging, despite its familiarity.

The second chapter of Atelier's Mysterious Trilogy keeps some things recognizable whereas others are new, and this doesn't always work perfectly. The open world is a very good addition but the time limit is hard to grasp. Its plot is not the greatest asset and combat remains mostly the same, but overall this is something that Atelier fans should discover on their own.

Atelier Firis is a highly ambitious and experimental Atelier game that tries to mix everything up. Though I consider it the weakest of the Mysterious trilogy (and one of the weaker Atelier entries in general), it’s by no means a bad game. The sandbox/open world is quite enjoyable to explore, the soundtrack is solid if a bit cramped, and the combat does eventually open up after feeling tacked on for a large portion of the game. There is a lot to like in the game, but the time limit can make you feel more anxious than you should. If this is your first time with this experimental Atelier, make sure to take your time and enjoy all it has to offer. Atelier Firis is best played as an open-world slow-life game. After all, the best part of the game is the Mysterious Journey itself.

Exploration is fun with the large open maps, but due to the time limit you have to plan how far you can go and when to rest. The story hook is interesting (Firis has to pass the exam in order to be free), combat is a simple turn based but well done, synthesis is match 3 puzzle. Character design and the music are excellent. It runs fantastically in docked but it's so comfy to play it in handheld mode.

This Deluxe edition also comes with the costumes that gives you extra buff, a digital art book and more music to choose from.
