Asphalt 9: Legends is a great arcade racer for Nintendo Switch, with a huge single player career, awesome graphics and a local multiplayer mode via split-screen.

The graphics, the driving mechanics, the tracks, the vehicles, and the play time in Asphalt 9: Legends are all very good. The game is fun to play and challenging enough to keep the player engaged. However, the micro-transactions and some frame-rate issues do interfere with the overall experience.

In Asphalt 9: Legends splashy visuals come first, collecting unlockables comes second, and skill proves to be a distant third. Having said that, it's tons of fun, at least, if not in search of realism, and despite the lack of decent variety, not to mention the fact that it's an always-online product. Moreover, this can definitely be enjoyed in its original, free form, or by simply spending a bunch of pounds to purchase the Starter Pack if you need to save yourself from more than 10 to 20 hours worth of grinding, but beyond that, the game won't really force you to do anything more besides from playing it.

Asphalt 9: Legends is a free and surprisingly fun arcade racing game with mobile microtransaction free-to-play gubbins that could potentially ruin the experience for you, unless you’ve played enough mobile games to know how to ignore it. The reasonably priced Starting Racer Pack significantly lessens their impact, making it feel more like a ‘normal’ premium product, so if you try the free version and enjoy it, this – and this alone – is the sole purchase you should consider.

"Freemium” games are a scourge of mobile gaming, and seeing it come to the Switch in such an aggressive way feels just as icky here as it does on your mobile device. There’s undeniably a lot to do here, but be ready to shell out some real money if you want to get the full Asphalt experience.

Perfect to play on the go and available for everyone for free, Asphalt 9 Legends is a fast-paced and well-structured game, with only a few excesses related to microtransactions, and a bit of grinding too.

A fun game at its core but can’t decide if it’s an arcade racer broken up with commercials, or a commercial broken up by an arcade racer.

Nothing redeems Asphalt 9. It's shallow, inferior game that has been built with the exclusive purpose of getting suckers to throw more money at it. This stuff should be left on mobile platforms or, better yet, never made.

Makes mario kart tour look benign and benevolent. Please no more mobile monetizating on switch. . This is why I never play games on my phone. Appalling. Looks like fun maybe if it wasn't mugging you. Deleted after 3 goes, and I love racing games, but couldn't bear even the free content. Perhaps I'm being a bit unfair, I've a kid, sick of hearing v bucks please I want. Please bring a law out and save gaming from the pariahs Full Review »

The controls. In the mobile version you can tilt your phone as little or as much as possible to steer your cars precisely, with a controller, you only have left and right, that's it. No analog support in a 2019 game is unacceptable. 2. Unbalanced online matchmaking. It's simple, pair players that have a similar car ranking and that are in the same tier. I get paired with vehicles nearly twice my power, and get destroyed, and lose some of my rating because of it. If you want to play this game competitively, only play the time trial events that come up, those are fun.

    3. Latency online. This may be only my problem, i'm not sure, but i often fail to score a take down on another player because of lag. It's very laggy at times, not to where my car teleports but the other way around. I haven't been able to try the split screen mode yet but i hope it's fun. All in all think it's an ok game, but for those wanting to progress as quickly as they can and get more vehicles by climbing leaderboards, winning online races, etc, i can see it to be an extremely frustrating experience. Just get Grid if you want a solid racing game.
