  1. Even on the easiest setting Ultimate Ghosts ‘N Goblins is designed to tease, torture, torment and transgress. In other words it’s #%$&*+! hard!

  4. This game is about as hard as petrified wood. Capcom eased things up a bit by tossing three difficulty levels into the mix, but even the added confidence booster couldn't save me from dying hundreds of times.
  5. For the few, the proud and the masochistic, however, your game has arrived. Good luck, and for the love of god, use that optional wrist-strap. PSPs are expensive.

Hardcore devotees of Sir Arthur's previous adventures will whoop like pandas at the news that the game's legendary toughness has not been completely castrated for today's lily-livered gamers, though it's sometimes hard to shake the feeling that the relentless challenge comes from clunky controls and respawning monsters just as often as smart level design.

It's great, simplistic, old-school adventuring, but fiendish with it. Crap gamers: you have been warned.

    While Ultimate Ghosts ‘n Goblins often threatens to be obtuse and dated platformer, it’s hard not admire its impishly cunning design, charming presentation and strict old-school challenge.
  13. UGAG can very comfortably be compared to a Rubik’s Cube – it isn’t very pretty or enticing, it’s just an extremely straightforward, ball-bustingly hard challenge. It almost deserves two separate scores. If you like a challenge, then add [30] more points to my final score. If you prefer a bit more of an easier time, then detract [50].

    There’s no doubt that fans of 2D action will love this difficult quest, but if you weren’t into side scrollers before, it seems unlikely that anything here will change your mind.
  21. I want to fight against bad guys, not the control scheme. If tweaking was done with the horrible jump system, then this game would have been a solid recommendation.
  22. While it’s hard for me to generally recommend this game to anyone, I know that old-school fans of the game and masochistic gamers who enjoy relying on dumb luck along with insane difficulty will enjoy the game.
  23. The original Ghosts 'N Goblins was famously difficult, so it's hard to fault the new game for being difficult, too. The difference is that the new Ghosts 'N Goblins is difficult in manufactured ways - controls and structure - which force replays of previous levels.
  24. Ultimate Ghosts & Goblins may bring on some nostalgia and looks fun for a while, but unless you are fantastically good at side-scrolling games or just plain masochistic when it comes to your gaming, this one's not worth your money.
  25. Game play tends to become monotonous after a while, although the game itself is relatively short. Some required maneuvers were very difficult, which frustrated me.

    I never played the original, and this one gave me the opportunity to try it. Too hard, so impossible to really enjoy.

    What you liked about this game

    Ultimate Ghosts’n Goblins is not a step backwards, but it is also not
    the sequel that could have been made. Over a decade later and Capcom
    continues right where it left off. This is only half of what was
    expected. What they present is a troubling dichotomy within this
    game, that of nostalgia versus innovation. Moments of wonder,
    however, do slowly invade this troubled sequel in the form of
    exciting expansions to Arthur’s repertoire, to remind us of the fact
    that the originator was at the helm of this project. In short, quite
    good but much more worthy of being made great.

    What you did not like about this game

    Capcom could have taken many of the crazy-paced arcade game mechanics
    that have made them famous since 1992, but has puzzlingly decided to
    exclude them: a combo system, multiple characters, extravagantly
    showy magic effects, and baroque bosses that take up a whole stage
    rather than a whole screen, as well as multiple tiers of levels and
    skill/technique-based rewards. Capcom has the technology these days
    to implement the sprite-heavy, manic gameplay of the late 90’s-early
    00’s, seen in their Versus games. Instead, we get more environmental
    effects (which are admittedly good) but the ponderously fragmented
    magic/armor/weapon system is needlessly clunky…what belongs in a
    proper sequel to Ghouls’n Ghosts is the arcade sensibility and not
    the collection adventure sensibility.

    Your final recommendation

    This game may be unapproachable to many casual gamers. I would like
    to think the new levels, monsters and surprises would be enough to
    hold interest; but to the hardcore among us, we will be in familiar
    ground, with new twists that stretch the boundary of rewards and
    punishment even further, the collection aspect being the most
    frustrating. Stick through the tough parts and you will find the gems
    in this game. It's most worth it to see (and fight) the spectacular
    bosses and find your own way through.
