this game is like 70 games in one. not an all out masterpiece these days, and does have its share of flaws throughout its runtime. but for those story twists everyone knows by now, fun battles, action sequences that, if you're lucky, are a lot of fun, it is still very much worth playing these days.

Final Fantasy VII is truly a timeless game. Even after 20 years, it's still regarded as one of, if not THE greatest RPG of all time. While I definitely don't agree with that statement, I can't argue against the massive impact that this game has had on the industry. I do think that the game has quite a few flaws, and some really big ones at that, but as a whole, it's a really great time. AsFinal Fantasy VII is truly a timeless game. As much as I love the characters, story, and music, the highlight of FFVII is easily the Materia system. It's simply a ton of fun to experiment with different materia combinations, just to see what happens. Like, do you want to turn your enemies into frogs with every hit? Just throw an Added Effect + Transform on your weapon and there you go! Or would you rather inflict instant death upon every hit? Well, an Added Effect + Destruct will get the job done. I seriously cannot emphasize how much customization you have over your characters with materia. It makes the game worth playing just by itself. Now, as much as I absolutely love the majority of FFVII, there are some serious problems that the game has. My biggest issue with the game is how the story is presented. Now, don't get me wrong, the story of FFVII is great. Genuinely one of the best in the series. My issue is how they decide to tell it. At multiple points in the game, everything just screeches to a halt, and a plot-dump of information is told all at once. Not only that, but they decide to tell it in a somewhat unorthodox, kinda vague way. I get what they're trying to do, they're trying to tell the story in a way that makes you think "Wow, that was such an interesting way they did that!" But they do such a poor job of explaining things, that you're more than likely left confused at what happened. I appreciate the effort of them trying to explain the story in a different way, but I think they could've handled it better. However, once you do understand the story, it truly is great. I personally think FFVI has the best story in the series, but this one comes close. In short, I really love this game. There are some aspects about it that I realllllly dislike, but the good very much outweighs the bad. If you've never played FFVII, I really do recommend it, it's a game that I think everyone should try at least once. It's amazing at best, and inoffensive at worst. Expand

Instead in 1997 i played true classics like resident evil (1996). But 2020 remake of FF7 actually made me interested in this series. Expand

It is best enjoyed during the dark and cold winter months. The game is not always mechanically perfect, but it is still fairly solid. Beyond that, it is a game that is more than the sum of its parts, and its beauty is not easily expressed. A lot of nay-sayers will try to call it dated, criticize the visuals, or the turn-based combat. I would say that those might be deal breakers for you, but I genuinely believe that if you give this a shot you will see what people see in this classic. Expand

Final Fantasy 7 hit the right spot at the right time. It made Final Fantasy popular in the west, created a legacy and a loyal fanbase as much as some haters. It is without a doubt a really great praiseworthy game even if it is not the best Final Fantasy (At least FF6 and Tactics are better for me) or best RPG of all time (Closer to it back then). It was also the end of an age as FinalFinal Fantasy 7 hit the right spot at the right time. It was also the end of an age as Final Fantasy was a Nintendo exclusive series on NES and SNES but the N64 was still based on cartridges and Square did correctly assume that 3D was the future of gaming. Sony had its PlayStation ready that would become Nintendo's nightmare and it was well suited for Squares needs. The rest is gaming history. The game itself has the theme of an evil corporation Shinra Inc. destroying nature for profit and lying to the public on the front. Behind it there is a more serious thread as past events haunt the present and our characters are getting involved. It focused on the main character Cloud Strife a former Soldier of Shinra as he is recruited by his childhood girlfriend Tifa Lockheart for the resistance organization Avalanche. Avalanche want to save the world from Shinra and is framed by them as terrorist organization (They have actually a point here). This starts the events of the game. The story itself has a lot of twist. The characters backstories are all connected to Shinra at some point and everyone has solid reasons to participate in the events. There are even 2 hidden characters for you to find. It handles also serious themes as human vs nature or the price of progress, what actions are justified or abuse of power by organizations. I enjoyed the main story, side stories (especially Wutai) and individual backstories of the characters. Also there are tons of side activities like Chocobo racing (and breeding), tournament battles, snow boarding, a rail shooter and more. There are also 2 super bosses later on that will give you nightmares if you are unprepared. The magic system uses Materia which is condensed life force. It comes in different flavors. Green for magic like healing or elemental spells, pink for status increase, blue for supporting, yellow for special abilities and red ones for summons. There are useful combinations to use and test. The Materia gain also experience points and get better (stronger spells / effects). On the highest level a new Materia is created with the lowest experience level. In addition there are also some hidden items, learnable enemy skills (special Materia needed) and like said before 2 hidden characters. The battles are well designed and some are challenging. The Materia are well integrated into the game and you will enjoy the effects. The summons are epic especially the final Knights of the Round which devastates nearly all enemies in 1 use (hard to get as you must bread the best Chocobo available). The graphics were beautiful and awful at the same time. They had not get 3d character models right at this time. Look how it improved in FF8 and FF9. The battles and especially the CGI sequences however were breathtaking. ILM made the CGI if I remember correctly. The soundtrack however still holds up today. Special warning for the German version. The translation was bad and even Square noticed it and got a better translator for the next game (minor celebrity back then in the gaming community). Also has one of the saddest moments in gaming. I think I can give you a few tips here: Read a FAQ about missable content as there is critical good stuff affected. Having 7777 HP is devastating for your next enemy, always level up your Materia with equipment with double growth (triple exist but is rare), bread special Chocobos as there are non reachable locations (with excellent stuff), some learnable enemy skills are awesome and enjoy the game. Almost forgot that it has not only serious parts but also sometimes great humor. Overall this game is nostalgic as it was for many the first Final Fantasy they played. It deserved a place in gaming history as it created a legacy. Still worth playing gameplay wise but some parts have not aged well. I still have fond memories and replayed a few times. Expand

First things first, while I don't believe it is a masterpiece I still think it a great JRPG title and a must-play for fans of the genre.

The story felt mind-blowing at times and had an interesting villain with a great design but at times also felt too sentimental and far-fetched. Overall still great though. The open-ending could have been better but it was a good conclusion but left a few questions unanswered.
The characters are quite likable and interesting and the main party feels very diverse. Sometimes I felt like the characters could have been explored more though side-quests and dialogue but they still had solid personalities. I also enjoyed that some of the characters were pretty comical.
The turn-based combat was also enjoyable and it still felt flesh although a bunch of enemy designs and skills felt really random and out of place. That's one of my main complaints and what holds the score down the most.

The bottom line is: if you're a JRPG fan you should definitely play this one at least once. The story has a solid length and there are tons of side quests and stuff to do. The experience and the characters will stick with you although the writing could have been better in some occasions and the enemy designs and skills could have been more serious.

Once I actually bothered to learn the Materia system I enjoyed it much more. It was full n moving around peoples Materia and creating the best team I could. I think story wise it was great. Some confusing moments for sure, but it didn't bother me too much as I don't need to understand every detail personally. (I've played kingdom hearts games it doesn't get more confusing than that). One problem I had with the game was figuring out where to go. I liked the pre rendered backgrounds...but sometimes they made navigating where to go hard and confusing. There were multiple parts in the game where I needed a guide to know where/how to go. Maybe that's just me though. Random encounters made that process even more stressful. But that was really the only major flaw I could think of with the game. I think once I got the highwind I didn't have any problems with that actually. It made navigating the world faster, easier, and more fun. I actually came to love the graphics personally. Once I got highwind I explored the workd more, got all level 4 limit breaks and all ultimate weapons for cloud Tifa and cid, who were my 3 favorite characters. The blocky character designs and 3D backgrounds. At first glance some people may say they are ugly, but to me they had a unique charm that I've seen no other game have. The word was so fun and full of life, I think the soundtrack was the biggest part of this. The soundtrack of this game is one of the best I've ever heard honestly. Ahead on our way, the main theme, Aerith theme, tifas theme, and one winged angel were my favorites. I LOVED the game. I'd say it was incredible considering it's 23 years old! In conclusion, I would personally say it's definitely worth a playthrough in 2020. I played it without any mods, just how it was on the PlayStation 1 and t was so much fun! Enjoyed it from start to finish. Played it for 43 hours total and it was so worth it! Some people dismiss this game being considered great for nostalgic people...but I played it 23 years after it's release with no nostalgia and it was epic!!!!!!!!! Expand
