Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered

Applying the same fundamentals as the previous trilogy, Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered allows us to revisit the darkest games in the franchise. Longtime fans will certainly approve it, but, despite efforts such as options for modern controls, new players will likely have a hard time adjusting to these relics from the past.

I'm very happy to now have remastered editions of the first 6 Tomb Raider games even if those included in this collection aren't of the same level of quality as the iconic first 3. The poor lighting and lack of extras doesn't help but they're still highly enjoyable games overall.

The quality of the games in Tomb Raider IV - VI is nothing short of a mixed bag, but the remastering job is top notch. Fans won't probably need convincing to plump down the cash for this latest bundle, and The Last Revelation was always one of Lara's best outings. Despite their flaws, Chronicles and Angel of Darkness are worth dipping into, and the latter is in its best shape to date, warts and all.

Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is a product similar in objectives to the previous work of Aspyr Media and, due to some of its limitations, it may not be appealing to new generations of players. That said, net of the critical issues related to the original experiences, the work done by the developers is more than appreciable and will delight all fans with a few more years on their shoulders eager to get back to grips with the classic iterations of Tomb Raider.

The questionable camera, technical limitations and issues inherited from the original releases don't allow this collection to be a definitive remaster. Even so, for fans of the genre and those who want to know Lara Croft's darkest era, the collection is worth it.

The visual upgrades, new control options, and extra content make this a must-have for longtime fans and a great entry point for newcomers. Unfortunately, not fixing the bugs still feels lazy, even if some may say it is part of nostalgia. If you modernize the graphics, you should have made an effort to also improve the technical parts of the game to alleviate frustration. Once again, this remaster could have been great with a bit more care.

Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is a remastering effort that builds on what was done with the first trilogy and helps deliver a complete package of Tomb Raider adventures in the traditional key. Sadly, however, this batch thrives on objectively worse material than its predecessor, with the fifth and sixth chapters weak on the narrative front, to which the remastering work did nothing more.

With another generous set of remasters, we finally have the complete inaugural generation of a Playstation icon. The ports aren't perfect, but a generous selection of modern options balance out the imperfections of Tomb Raider: Last Revelation and its sequel Chronicles. Having The Angel Of Darkness in a good enough state to revisit might be worth the price alone.

Aspyr did great in enhancing Lara Croft’s second trilogy, but there’s only so many things you can fix until the past comes back to haunt you.

To sum up, it's worth noting that out of the entire collection, only Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation can truly be considered a great game. It's worth playing not only for nostalgic fans of the series, but also for genre enthusiasts who might have missed it for some reason. The other two games are more of a historical curiosity and will mostly appeal to those who have fond memories of them from their childhood or adolescence.

This trilogy is a prime example of why nostalgia is sometimes best left undisturbed. All three titles—especially the atrocious Angel of Darkness—mostly serve as reminders of the rough early days of 3D platformers.

Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered gives fans a solid reason to dive back in. The improved graphics and small but welcome gameplay tweaks help a lot, though the games themselves remain fairly average. Oh, and don’t forget to save.

If you're new to these classics, the collection offers a solid experience. However, for those who have already played them, there isn’t much new to discover.

Even though the ancient game mechanics have been patched up with modern control systems, they still fall short in many ways and even introduce new issues. As a result, in this state, the game appeals to no one except its most dedicated masochistic fans. On top of that, all the games in the package happen to be among the worst in the series.

Whilst these remakes bring the second Tomb Raider trilogy to modern systems, but they simply can't match up to the original trilogy – Chronicles and Angel of Darkness in particular were let downs when they released originally. I can't see this remaster gaining these games any new fans, especially since they control like some kind of device that exists to torture game developers that specialise in traversal mechanics.

This is certainly a piece of gaming history, but considering how mediocre Chronicles is and how bad The Angel of Darkness is, I have a hard time seeing how this can be a blockbuster.
