This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you look at it as a horror game, it sucks. The horror element is poor, the action scenes are not dramatic enough. The division into too many chapters causes the emotional circuit to be interrupted halfway. And if you look at it as a story game, the first part does quite well. But by chapter 9 everything is like a **** Can't accept the way the game handles the story Expand

Game is OK, tries hard to be like Until Dawn but falls short. Great graphics, cheesy characters, story is very boring the first 3 hours. The price is very unreasonable. $70 for a game you can beat in 6-8 hours is a slap on the face to the gamer. What a rip off!

I beat the game and I enjoyed it for the most part. The dialogue can be weird and cheesy at times but the the story is solid. There are so many alternate choices which is great for this type of game and the graphics are amazing.

I really enjoyed the game until the end, the ending was quite disappointing, after killing the big bad the game just ended there was no cutscenes where the characters reunited etc which was really disappointing.
I also feel like supermassive lied to us, they promised us that there wouldn't be much plot armor but that was a huge lie.. I was really hyped for this game and my expectations

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In my opinion this story is better than Until Dawn and the characters had potential to be better than the characters in Until Dawn, but Supermassive dropped the ball. Half of the characters you never really learn anything about after the introductory part of the game, they either get the Jessica treatment or turn into a monster no matter what you do. They say that every character has the potential to be the “main character”, but in reality it can only be 4 of them and out of those 2 you can tell who the final boy and final girl are easily. To top all of that off you don’t get ANY closure from the ending at all, just a status report on every character. Nothing to show how their relationships went, nothing to make us feel like “Awww I’m glad I kept this person alive.” Just a stupidly long podcast you have to listen to the whole way through to get the Epilogue trophy. Graphics aren’t awful most of the time, but some characters faces are far better than others. The water is literally laughable. First time I saw it I thought my TV was breaking because it was so **** bad. Literally laughable. Music was amazing in this game, I loved it so much. I loved the different clues and the evidence you had to collect and how they all related to one another. I just kind of wish there was a way for them to have hidden exactly what was going on for longer so we had to find the clues to tell us what was happening. After we find out everything it almost feels like “Well what’s the point of collecting these anymore?” Death rewind is a cool feature BUT the problem with some of the character’s deaths are that if you didn’t get some obscure easy to miss item at the VERY beginning of the game they’ll die if you don’t make the right choice. So if your favorite character dies in an encounter and you think “Oh well let me do my death rewind and pick the other option.” Nope you can die in that option too. You have to death rewind all the way back to chapter one, find that obscure easy to miss item and then they’ll live. But that’s okay, there’s another way for them to live as long as you found another kind of obscure item the previous chapter with one of the two characters that may or may not be alive. This might just be a petty complaint of mine, but I feel its still valid. And my final complaint, I wish there was a way to save the Hackettes (minus Kaylee, because I don’t think there could be a possible way to keep her alive) and to save all of the Counselors. Like the game acts like the Hackettes are the enemy, but ALL game they were trying to keep the Counselors alive until Laura’s dumbass comes in all guns a blazing and kills Kaylee. Who knows maybe Jedidiah and Bobby would’ve kept protecting them if Laura didn’t shoot Constance in the **** face. (I haven’t played through to see what happens if I don’t struggle for the gun so idk if they do or not, but I still can’t be mad at them for not doing it since Laura killed Kaylee)? It honestly felt like they were like “Ya know what? Werewolves aren’t a big enough threat, we need to make this family, who have been protecting these kids all night long, attack them in this house. Yeah that’ll be good.” It wasn’t good. I didn’t feel good about killing these people who just lost a family member and risked their lives for these stupid ass counselors all night. This game had the potential to be such a great game, much better than Until Dawn and better than the Anthology Series, but seriously. They dropped the ball hard. I originally started this review off at an 8/10, but as I wrote and continued to think about everything this game has to offer I lowered to a 6/10. Expand

If you're like me and grew up on Friday the 13th and have enjoyed a Supermassive/interactive-movie game, this is right up your alley. It looks amazing, the setting is great, the story is simple but effective, and the characters are surprisingly likeable. I'm so sick of the stereotypical **** girl and the brooding-but-secretly-cool guy characters but they were written and performed well enough here that it didn't bother me. It's definitely light on gameplay, but the amount of choice and consequence throughout keeps it immersive and fairly exciting, While I didn't find it particularly scary, I really appreciate that Supermassive hires real actors, which helps you to get invested in the story. It isn't the masterpiece that I think these devs are capable of, but I had a lot of fun with it and loved the whole mood and pace of the storytelling. Characters like Laura and Max, Dylan, Travis Hackett, even Abi and Ryan (who grew on me), were all great and really had me hooked on their respective narratives.

The one big downside is that I kept thinking how i just paid CAD$90 on a game that lasted 2 evenings. It would be amazing if it was a full-length, 20+ hr game that spans many days. I would totally follow the camp throughout the whole summer as a slow burn mystery starts to unfold. I imagine in the future Supermassive will go beyond the single-night story and maybe adapt a great horror book into a long, epic story where you follow characters in their lives and things slowly start to unravel and go nuts. Maybe something with a serial killer or something that doesn't rely on revealing a creature and then just fizzling out. Maybe Quantic Dream will beat them to it. Like a modern and up-to-date, not-terribly-cheesy Heavy Rain.

I love what Supermassive is doing, and this particular story should have been a home-run for me, but I can't help feeling a little disappointed after ending it. I think we'll see a masterpiece from this team, but it's not The Quarry

A lot more than I expected! I was entertained all throughout! There has been a sting of disappointing games but The Quarry does not. Graphics were good sounds and music good. Felt like you were watching a real movie and deciding what happened. Choices felt weighted with consequences as well. I like what they did with the first two character arches and then flash backed to what happened and it was playable to that was a treat! Love the cast of actors in the game as well gave it that extra real movie feel and I DIDNT EXPECT THE kind of monsters! This was great work and no MTX! *chiefs kiss* Expand

    - The Visuals were at times amazing and the Motion Caption was well done. - The Plot was intriguing and kept me hooked throughout the game
    - The Features. Let me explain there are a number of options to tweak you gaming experience such as Automatic QTEs, The Movie Mode and Director Chair is really a nice bonus if you want to spice things up with basically creating your own horror adventure. And last but not least the Death system. The Mixed
    - The Writing can get a bit cheesy at times and depending on importance can affect your experience(but me personally it didn't bother me)
    - The inherent gameplay style that the game possess. On one hand the game is for Games and Non-Gamers alike, but If you're looking for an "game" well there isn't a whole lot of gameplay because more the half of the game is cuteness. The Bad - There are a couple of bugs that I ran into, there were a number of times where the characters blood stains would kinda flicker in a white color and can throw off the immersion. This is the perfect example of a double edged sword. Its fun stereotypical horror movie, but that is it. It does nothing new, a lot of the game is very predictable. What destroys a lot of the mystery and tension.

If you loved Until Dawn you will love The Quarry!

As someone who has been obsessed with the work of Supermassive Games since 2015’s Until Dawn and has continued to love them through the rocky yet still entertaining ‘The Dark Pictures Anthology’, I can honestly say this game reaches the same heights as Until Dawn and House of Ashes and, in many ways surpasses it.

The story is enthralling leaving me dying to see where it goes at every turn, the acting across the cast is phenomenal with particular kudos to the performances of Siobhan Williams as ‘Laura’, Ted Raimi as ‘Travis’, Miles Robbins as ‘Dylan’ and of course the wonderful Brenda Song as ‘Kaitlyn’. The variety of choice and effect is also a highlight, alongside the new ‘Paths’ system - this game's answer to the ‘Butterfly Effect’ - that helps to show you the impacts of your choices and is displayed to the player through delightful retro 80’s inspired VHS Movie boxes.

There is also an updated collectible system for collecting Clues which feels more connected as new information becomes available to you as you find more. The other ‘collectible’ systems are also stellar, the ‘Evidence’ system which relates to specific major clues that help to build an abundance of evidence to prove that the events that take place at Hackett’s Quarry are in fact Bizarre yet Bonafide. The last collectible system is Supermassive’s newest variation on ‘Premonitions’, which in Until Dawn were Totems dotted around the environments that foretold possible futures. In The Quarry you instead collect Tarot Cards, specifically the 22 main arcana, each one giving you a glimpse into the future. However only one Tarot Card can be viewed each chapter so it still allows some room for mystery even for the avid collectible hunter.

The other change in this game is the many differences to the ‘gameplay’ aspects of The Quarry. This includes pressing directional buttons to avoid falling whilst running from an unknown threat, mashing the - in my case - ‘X’ button to keep yourself steady whilst moving across narrow places and lifting heavy objects, pressing ‘X’ once again to ‘interrupt’ certain scenarios whether that means calling out to whatever is hiding in the woods or attacking someone or something that may or may not be trying to harm you (I’m trying my best to be as vague as possible). There are also segments where you will have a gun and be able to shoot these unknown aggressors by shining a flashlight over them and firing, just make sure to analyse your surroundings and don’t be too quick to pull the trigger cos it may end badly for you. The final aspect of gameplay and quite honestly my favourite element, is ‘Don’t Breathe’, in these segments you must hold down the ‘X’ button to hold your breathe as you hide from an attacker, watching carefully as they move around and waiting for the perfect moment to make a break for it and get the hell out of there.

In terms of game modes there is single player, which is just your regular old story, couch co-op where up to 8 players can take control of the playable characters and try to survive the night and Movie Mode, where you can select predetermined outcomes and watch them unfold without lifting a finger. There’s also an online voting mode of sorts but that is unavailable in the current build of the game.

I really enjoyed The Quarry and definitely recommend it to any fan of Until Dawn or The Dark Pictures Anthology or even just fans of the horror genre in general. It is a spectacular game filled with gore, witty banter and the occasional awkward and unnecessary tripping over a branch that we all love from classic 80s slashers.

However! The Quarry is a full price game, some would say an overpriced game which is completely understandable! As a fan of gaming and someone who is willing to pay more to support their favourite developers, I’m happy to fork over the £60+ it costs for this game but you should know what you’re getting into, this is a interactive movie game, which means that there is minimal gameplay, a lot of walking around and long ass cutscenes, if you’re not a fan of that, then don’t buy The Quarry. To those who are on the fence, I can’t say whether or not you’ll enjoy it yourself because that is the beauty of this subjective medium we call video games. I absolutely loved it but I can definitely understand your apprehension, in that case I’d recommend waiting for a sale or purchasing a physical copy which are often much cheaper. There is also a deluxe edition which adds some more content which I believe to be a little unnecessary, apart from the 80s throwback costumes which I personally love the art direction for.

I hope I’ve helped in some way to better your understanding of The Quarry.

Thanks for reading, and remember! “What Doesn’t Kill You, Will Make You Stronger!"

The Quarry does a fine job as a spiritual successor to the renowned Until Dawn, yet takes a few steps forward when it comes to character development and atmosphere building. Unfortunately, it sacrifices a few elements in the process which makes it a not so scary interactive movie more than a video game. Still, for lovers of the genre and Supermassive Games legacy – it’s a treat you should not miss.

This game, or interactive movie if you prefer, is a great experience for horror fans. The story, gameplay (minimalistic as it is) and the acting are some of the best I've seen in this genre yet. While there are some things that do break the immersion, it's still an experience for lovers of visual novels and horror fans alike.

The Quarry sits comfortably near the top of the interactive movie genre. Equal parts clever and terrifying, it earns its ten-hour runtime with a series of twists and turns that are sure to delight. There’s action, romance, comedy, and unbelievably disgusting violence. Supermassive Games have delivered a rollercoaster that serves as a fabulous follow-up to Until Dawn, so anyone who enjoys the genre will be in for one hell of a ride.
