Worse than Until Dawn, better than Dark Pictutes. For some reason, Supermassive chose to make the game so accessible to all audiences that gives The Quarry an incredible simplistic gameplay. Simple QTEs, simple exploration, long dialogue. Instead of make a better improve game, The Quarry is Worst , simple game.

Commendations should be given to Supermassive Games for making a horror adventure with numerous outcomes and it will entertain if you've got some buddies over or want to indulge in a horror night of your own. However, the characters are full of unlikable teenaged morons and 2015's Until Dawn is far superior to this effort.

Game is OK, tries hard to be like Until Dawn but falls short. Great graphics, cheesy characters, story is very boring the first 3 hours. The price is very unreasonable. $70 for a game you can beat in 6-8 hours is a slap on the face to the gamer. What a rip off!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In my opinion this story is better than Until Dawn and the characters had potential to be better than the characters in Until Dawn, but Supermassive dropped the ball. Half of the characters you never really learn anything about after the introductory part of the game, they either get the Jessica treatment or turn into a monster no matter what you do. They say that every character has the potential to be the “main character”, but in reality it can only be 4 of them and out of those 2 you can tell who the final boy and final girl are easily. To top all of that off you don’t get ANY closure from the ending at all, just a status report on every character. Nothing to show how their relationships went, nothing to make us feel like “Awww I’m glad I kept this person alive.” Just a stupidly long podcast you have to listen to the whole way through to get the Epilogue trophy. Graphics aren’t awful most of the time, but some characters faces are far better than others. The water is literally laughable. First time I saw it I thought my TV was breaking because it was so **** bad. Literally laughable. Music was amazing in this game, I loved it so much. I loved the different clues and the evidence you had to collect and how they all related to one another. I just kind of wish there was a way for them to have hidden exactly what was going on for longer so we had to find the clues to tell us what was happening. After we find out everything it almost feels like “Well what’s the point of collecting these anymore?” Death rewind is a cool feature BUT the problem with some of the character’s deaths are that if you didn’t get some obscure easy to miss item at the VERY beginning of the game they’ll die if you don’t make the right choice. So if your favorite character dies in an encounter and you think “Oh well let me do my death rewind and pick the other option.” Nope you can die in that option too. You have to death rewind all the way back to chapter one, find that obscure easy to miss item and then they’ll live. But that’s okay, there’s another way for them to live as long as you found another kind of obscure item the previous chapter with one of the two characters that may or may not be alive. This might just be a petty complaint of mine, but I feel its still valid. And my final complaint, I wish there was a way to save the Hackettes (minus Kaylee, because I don’t think there could be a possible way to keep her alive) and to save all of the Counselors. Like the game acts like the Hackettes are the enemy, but ALL game they were trying to keep the Counselors alive until Laura’s dumbass comes in all guns a blazing and kills Kaylee. Who knows maybe Jedidiah and Bobby would’ve kept protecting them if Laura didn’t shoot Constance in the **** face. (I haven’t played through to see what happens if I don’t struggle for the gun so idk if they do or not, but I still can’t be mad at them for not doing it since Laura killed Kaylee)? It honestly felt like they were like “Ya know what? Werewolves aren’t a big enough threat, we need to make this family, who have been protecting these kids all night long, attack them in this house. Yeah that’ll be good.” It wasn’t good. I didn’t feel good about killing these people who just lost a family member and risked their lives for these stupid ass counselors all night. This game had the potential to be such a great game, much better than Until Dawn and better than the Anthology Series, but seriously. They dropped the ball hard. I originally started this review off at an 8/10, but as I wrote and continued to think about everything this game has to offer I lowered to a 6/10. Expand

It looks amazing, the setting is great, the story is simple but effective, and the characters are surprisingly likeable. I'm so sick of the stereotypical **** girl and the brooding-but-secretly-cool guy characters but they were written and performed well enough here that it didn't bother me. It's definitely light on gameplay, but the amount of choice and consequence throughout keeps it immersive and fairly exciting, While I didn't find it particularly scary, I really appreciate that Supermassive hires real actors, which helps you to get invested in the story. It isn't the masterpiece that I think these devs are capable of, but I had a lot of fun with it and loved the whole mood and pace of the storytelling. Characters like Laura and Max, Dylan, Travis Hackett, even Abi and Ryan (who grew on me), were all great and really had me hooked on their respective narratives.

The one big downside is that I kept thinking how i just paid CAD$90 on a game that lasted 2 evenings. It would be amazing if it was a full-length, 20+ hr game that spans many days. I would totally follow the camp throughout the whole summer as a slow burn mystery starts to unfold. I imagine in the future Supermassive will go beyond the single-night story and maybe adapt a great horror book into a long, epic story where you follow characters in their lives and things slowly start to unravel and go nuts. Maybe something with a serial killer or something that doesn't rely on revealing a creature and then just fizzling out. Maybe Quantic Dream will beat them to it. Like a modern and up-to-date, not-terribly-cheesy Heavy Rain.

I love what Supermassive is doing, and this particular story should have been a home-run for me, but I can't help feeling a little disappointed after ending it. I think we'll see a masterpiece from this team, but it's not The Quarry

This is the perfect example of a double edged sword. Its fun stereotypical horror movie, but that is it. It does nothing new, a lot of the game is very predictable. What destroys a lot of the mystery and tension.

-The game sometimes is disturbingly dark. I understand that it's a horror game, but at least give me a permanent flashlight.
-The choices are not always clear about what they will mean. A character died because of this, and it was so annoying, that he/she died not because of me but because of the game.

For the most part The Quarry was predictable and uninteresting. The gameplay of Until Dawn hasn't really been improved upon, and even the facial animation doesn't hold up to other modern games. It still feels as though they over-exaggerate every little facial expression past the point of realism. I was left feeling very disappointed in this game, especially at full price.

Multiple times, the female yells and screams at the male, but the male has to excuse and apologize, even he didn't do anything wrong. I guess that is kind of realistic, but still, it sucks being a normal man, and then play a game where a beta man apologizes for a females bad behavior.
Can we just please get past this gender-swap LGBT satanic ideologies and go back to normal times?

"You just said tools" he says.... She roles her eyes. For the x1000000 time in the game.
This game, tells that men are useless, idiots, fools, weak, stupid. Even thought he just fixed a car and made it run again, he is too stupid to break a lock. So the strong independent woman breaks the lock, while the man are looking for the side.

This is no way this game wasn't written by a lgbt member, or a man hater. No way. The writer of this story has a very bad relationship with their dad and hates all men.
Why do you keep putting mentally unstable people in charge of writing stories? This is a Naughty Dog story all over again.

This disconnect detracts from the overall experience, as most arguments arise from the foolishness of the male characters, while the females consistently make wise decisions. Personally, I find some of the dialogue for the male characters to be unbearable. Perhaps it would have been more effective to have an all-female cast, as it could have heightened the pace of the game. In fact, the entire plot could have unfolded without the inclusion of male characters.

However, despite these setbacks, the actual story of the game is quite entertaining. The graphics are visually stunning, and the music adds a compelling teen horror ambiance. Regrettably, The Quarry falls short in terms of delivering on its promised horror elements, as it ultimately becomes predictable with minimal scares. While I understand that it is intended as a teen horror experience, it would have greatly benefited from a stronger emphasis on horror and less focus on teenage drama.

Regarding the ending, it can be described as passable. It neither evokes strong positive nor negative feelings. The inclusion of an unnecessary epilogue feels superfluous and could have been omitted entirely.

In summary, The Quarry boasts impressive graphics, captivating music, and solid performances. However, it falters in terms of character dialogue, decision-making, and an overly predictable ending. Considering the strengths and weaknesses of the game, I would rate it a 6.5 out of 10.

Graphically it’s a marvel (most of the time). The general movement and facial animations are outstanding, I would say best in class. Lighting is also a technical masterpiece the way it shines on hair, skin and material is nothing short of spectacular. At some points you can question if the non-playable sections is real footage. I particularly like the use of depth-of-field which blurs the protagonist rather than medium/long distance environments. This effect is used very well and I hope more 3rd person perspective games use this or at least make the feature optional.

The voice acting and mo-cap is also stellar, although I think the writing sabotages the great work the actors and actresses have put in. What I mean by that is that the game is supposed to be survival horror, and while the acting is highly rated, the lines themselves diminish the horror element. Most characters rarely look or feel scared in relation to their current situation. In place of dialogue that would make the player more uneasy/nervous/fearful, the writers over-do clever quips, cheesy/humorous one liners or have the characters ignore horrific events with a blasé attitude. This completely destroys the tension in my opinion and results in a playthrough that just isn’t scary. Even less so on a repeated playthrough when the mystery has already been unravelled. And just to clarify, this isn’t a singular character playing the joker, it’s the majority of them. And it’s not just at the initial character building stage, it’s throughout the entire ordeal. They just don’t act like they are in any real danger and it’s atmosphere breaking.

The story itself is serviceable and does everything I suspect the makers intended. It’s not too convoluted, a bit predictable and contains the typical teen horror tropes that we expect; a Jock, Loner, Nerd, the Pretty Girl (on the outside at least). A few of which are well written and others that are completely unbelievable/un-relatable or just plain annoying (the latter kind of being a good thing in the case of a decision making game of life and death). Again, some of the characters and their actions completely suspend the immersion.

Overall I would say 7/10 based on the great technical feats that the devs have pulled off, amazing acting from the cast, but points deducted for the writing decisions which distracted me from the horror genre I expected the game to focus on.

Cheesy dialog, cringy cutscenes (A lot of them).

Uninteresting story, it drags a-lot about 4 hours and nothing happens, and the game only 8 hours long.

Every character blame everything on either the bears or the wind with no thought about it.

The butterfly effect are almost gone. whatever choices you make, it bears little to no consequences
    about it.

The game is too dark and foggy to see.

The Characters seems childish and make stupid decisions along the way.

You can only walk. there is no running mechanism.

If you finish the game and would like to go back, there is chapter select. but once you hit any chapter in the chapter select after you finish the story, the game completely overwrite everything you done up until that chapter you selected, and you cant go back to chapter select until you finish the game one more time.

There is little play game here compared to until down, which had a lot of choices.

    The ending is somewhat terrible.

like until downs totems, there is cards in which you can see the consequence of your actions. However, no matter how many you collect, you can only choose one to see per chapter.

Sometimes, the character faces looks weird up close.

The playtime between each character is distributed unevenly. sometime you will play with one character for 10 to 15 min, and then it completely changes to another character in which you play with him/her for 1 to 2 min.

The story wasn't that engaging, i had little to no care about the characters.

Sometime the characters contradict themselves which is weird.

    Pros:

    Interesting concept

The graphics is a lot better, but that should be expected.

    The monsters looks terrifying.

Multiple ending, some are interesting and some are not.

The game has ten chapters. However, the first 4 chapters nothing really important happens.

Great voice acting but cheesy and cringy dialog.

There are interesting scenes when you miss-up or when you want a character to die.
The collectables are interesting, in which its necessary to understand the back story.

Innym elementem rozgrywki jest chodzenie i naciskanie 'x' w pobliżu przedmiotów, ale nawet ten aspekt szwankuje. The Quarry does a fine job as a spiritual successor to the renowned Until Dawn, yet takes a few steps forward when it comes to character development and atmosphere building. Unfortunately, it sacrifices a few elements in the process which makes it a not so scary interactive movie more than a video game. Still, for lovers of the genre and Supermassive Games legacy – it’s a treat you should not miss.
