It’s almost impossible to find copies of many Tales games today, and Bandai could’ve simply ported the game to modern platforms and been done with it. But Tales of Xillia Remastered is the best version it can be, a hidden gem polished to a sheen. RPG fans shouldn’t miss it.

While the dual protagonist system remains underwhelming, the fast-paced combat and beloved cast shine brighter than ever in this refined update.

Tales of Xillia Remastered is one of my personal favourite Tales games so if you're a fellow fan, this version contains plenty of quality of life upgrades that definitely make it worth getting so you can spend even more time with Milla and Jude.

For first-time players, Tales of Xillia Remastered is still a great way to experience this Tales of classic, as there’s currently no other official way to play it on current-generation consoles, and no system is backward-compatible with PS3. While the original may not be the absolute brightest in the series, Tales of Xillia Remastered is a solid way to play a solid Tales of title that hasn’t had a chance to shine in a while.

All in all, despite its flaws, Tales of Xillia Remastered is still a wonderful JRPG, even over a decade later. The remaster provides many reasons why fans of the genre will enjoy and appreciate the game.

An old dub track sounding like an old dub track isn’t so bad, as far as what’s taking up the “biggest problem” slot for a release like this. Tales of Xillia Remastered is a totally competent, if not intriguing or surprising in some way, refresh of a niche PlayStation 3 RPG that was cool enough to get a direct sequel, even in the middle of its series niche era. Xillia’s base holds up, from its fighting game-like combat language to its colorful characters and focused story. Veteran fans don’t have a lot to show up for unless they’ve already been jonesing for a replay, but anyone who’s become a Tales fan in the years since have a new, easy way to play a game worth catching up on, and that’s worth celebrating.

And despite some of the structural faults that remain from when it was stuck on the PS3 for the last 14 years, and the new errors of overrelying on AI upscaling, it remains an excellent and faithful remaster. Newcomers and fans alike will find themselves enamoured with its engaging battle system, captivating cast of characters, and the sheer charm that it is packed with from top to bottom. What little faults there are do not hold this game back from being a great entry in the Tales Remastered Project.

Even if the combat doesn't shine quite as brightly as in Tales of Graces f, the entire package is arguably one of the best ways to experience Tales at its most consistently fun.

Tales of Xillia is a good game in the saga and, although it didn't have the best return with this remaster, it stands out for its excellent gameplay, good performance, deep story, and great graphics. If you're not in a hurry to explore the world of Rieze Maxia, wait for a sale or look for other games in the series like Tales of Vesperia or Tales of Arise.
