Jul 15, 2025System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is the original System Shock 2 experience for better and for worse. It includes every aspect of the original game, including the clunky menus and side features that don’t work as well as intended. Fans of the original will miss nothing, and have a smooth-running version on consoles. While System Shock 2 is an important video game, it’s going to be difficult for modern players to experience it for the first time. I recommend Nightdive’s System Shock remake for anyone who wants to get into the series for the first time. Undoubtedly, System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is the best way to play this classic open-world survival horror FPS CRPG.

Jul 7, 2025System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is a fantastic way to revisit one of the most influential games ever made. Lightyears ahead of its time, some of its systems haven't aged well, making it frustrating at times. Still, with a compelling story and solid gameplay, and packed full of art and assets from development (not to mention scans of classic magazine write-ups, as well as a complete Prima strategy guide), it's well worth the time of any enthusiast.

Jul 7, 2025I get why diehards love System Shock 2, but it doesn't change the fact that it hasn't aged all that gracefully in 2025. This game deserves its legendary status for the influence it had on the industry at large, but it's one most of us should just appreciate from afar. This remaster is undoubtedly the best way to play the game on modern hardware. Still, it also ultimately feels like a low-effort endeavor that's devoid of desperately needed Quality of Life improvements, making me question why they even bothered. The lore and vibe are still incredible, but the moment-to-moment gameplay can sadly be a downright slog. You'll already know if this remaster is for you, and I think you'll enjoy it if that's the case. Curious newbies should just watch a playthrough.

Aug 21, 2025So how does this remaster of a vaunted classic stack up in the end? It’s a strange beast, where each step taken by Nightdive to inject some modern convenience is countered by an outdated design decision, though fans of the original will be happy the developers decided to hew closely to what they remember so fondly. It’s all very much a case of “one step forward, one step back,” resulting in a game that absolutely honors its source material, for better or worse. For new audiences, however, that same approach leaves a lot less to latch on to. A classic it may be, though it never quite manages to be as memorable as its equally punishing predecessor despite coming close. Between its crass difficulty, clashing gameplay systems, and at-times-puzzling implementation, System Shock 2 is a game that aims to take the player’s breath away but winds up running dangerously low on oxygen instead.

Jul 28, 2025The System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is a hard game to recommend. On the one hand, if you're extremely eager to experience the origin of the immersive sim genre or are looking for the definitive way to play System Shock 2 as a fan of the series, then this is the game for you. However, if you're coming fresh off the System Shock remake or are entering the series as a newcomer, you'll quickly be intimidated by the backtracking and dated gameplay design.
