An interesting musical role-playing game, well written and excellently acted but with a little too much carelessness on the aesthetic side and songs not always memorable.

Humble Games’ latest offering is a really interesting artistic experiment. While it didn’t leave me thinking that roleplaying musicals will be the wave of the future, I’m glad Summerfall Studios went for such a wild idea. The end result is uneven yet still quite enjoyable. A compelling mystery is bolstered thanks to some great music and strong performances by its cast. It’s a shame that the animation and songwriting can’t match the quality of the other elements, but Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical is still well worth checking out.

I hope Stray Gods kicks off a whole new genre, and more from Summerfall Studios in the future.

Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical is a novel attempt at offering something new to the video game space. But while it has a strong cast and a well-realized setting, the uneven songs, lack of meaningful player choice and a dull narrative bring down the curtain too soon.

With limited role-playing components, a so-so narrative, dialogue choices that don't seem to have significant impact, and a lack of replayability, Strays Gods: The Roleplaying Musical doesn't quite come together as well as it could. Still, this unique blend of styles will scratch those with an itch for an urban fantasy musical with entertaining songs.

Instead, I received a masterpiece. The music isn't really my thing but it is very well done. The characters are great (with the exception of one) and the game really does have you feel things. The best way I can describe it is like a Telltale Life is Strange game. I'm not a fan of two of the romances because they feel kind of stale, but the other two are done very well and are great for people looking for a place to find themselves in. This game is not huge, or perfect. But it is an absolute masterpiece for the small ambitious indie project it is. Full Review »
