Aug 9, 2023Stray Gods might not have told me how to get over a quarter-life crisis – unless I can turn into a God sometime soon – but it was an enchanting, emotionally affecting journey nonetheless. Diving into the lore, grappling with complicated decisions and then finally seeing the mysteries of modernised mythology unravel before me was a welcome distraction from my usual pattern of pondering my existence. What’s more, the surprising use of contemporary music genres led me to reconsider my reluctance towards musicals entirely. Perhaps there’s more about my mindset to reconsider, given how my time here is much shorter than that of the Idols.

Aug 9, 2023Stray Gods felt like it was made for me. If you love musicals in the rock opera genre, then dive in immediately as there is a story full of emotion and fantastic music waiting for you.

PLAYSep 6, 2023This interactive musical will knock the socks off of theatre kids and fans of Greek myth alike. It’s definitely worth a reprise to smooch the whole pantheon. [Issue#31, p.75]

Aug 9, 2023Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical is a dream game for musical lovers. Its usage of songs is perfectly integrated into the story and will get stuck in your head. The replayability is great in more ways than one, as you can replay the song sequences with different outcomes depending on what you choose. On top of that, it's bolstered by an A-List cast stacked with talent and carries this captivating murder mystery. Hopefully this means more musical games will come, but for now, you can't beat Stray Gods.

Aug 9, 2023Stray Gods from developer Summerfall Studios and publisher Humble Games is a beautiful and engaging musical branching narrative game that succeeds in delivering a powerful story with compelling characters. While not every song in the game is gold, the music that accompanies the gameplay mixes well and makes for one of the more entertaining gaming experiences of 2023.
-
Aug 9, 2023Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical is a unique and captivating experience thanks to the strength of its characters and how well-written its narrative is. The very good songs and great work by its cast result in a singular title capable of holding the attention of everyone who gives it a chance.
-
Aug 9, 2023Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical is a must-play for visual novel lovers, thanks to an engaging story, a rich cast of characters and a compelling original soundtrack.
-
Aug 9, 2023Stray Gods is worthwhile for players looking for a good story, multi-layered characters and of course musicals. Only the RPG aspects come up short.
-
Aug 9, 2023Part murder mystery, part visual novel, Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical is an audacious experiment. Happily, it pays off in a unique video game experience. There aren’t many games that use songs in a theatrical way. Being able to direct the flow of the music in real time is exciting and engaging. Pacing issues aside, it’s a concept that’s definitely worthy of continued development. I hope Wintory and Gaider continue to iterate on this new IP.

Aug 9, 2023There is no game out there like Stray Gods, and while its execution has some flaws, its originality shines through. Summerfall Studios has crafted a memorable experience with loveable characters and catchy songs to boot. It’s been weeks since I completed both my playthroughs, and I’m still singing many of the unforgettable songs because they are unforgettable. Stray Gods casts a spell on the RPG genre, showcasing that risks truly can pay off, and succeeds by being an experience like no other.

Aug 9, 2023It’s a shame that the songs in Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical didn’t have quite the impact on us that we hoped, but it might not be the case for everyone. Still, while we won’t be rushing to listen to its soundtrack on any streaming platforms, we’ve very much enjoyed our time with the game, and we’ll no doubt be returning to it for another playthrough or two in the future.
-
Aug 9, 2023Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical is full of charming gods and funky songs, and some issues with sound levels aren't enough to ruin that.
-
Aug 9, 2023Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical puts on a memorable performance with a star-studded cast that demands to be experienced more than once. With novel branching musical numbers and a diverse cast of characters, Summerfall Studios lives up to its roleplaying name.
-
Aug 9, 2023Stray Gods can be inconsistent in its musical numbers at times and presents a selection of irksome technical issues, but these foibles are trivial to overlook when Grace’s journey fires on all cylinders. It is marvelously written with a beating heart lined with poignancy, which at every turn expresses the joy, fear, and unpredictability of human life you can’t help but feel represented by. Much like Grace, I’m a lost, lost girl with little direction in life, but sometimes a game like this comes along and convinces me it’s only a matter of time until I’m found.
-
Aug 22, 2023Stray Gods is an interesting and mostly successful experiment in creating a new gaming genre, one that I am ultimately hoping leads to more refined experiences in the future. Despite a few grievances, I enjoyed my time unraveling Calliope’s death and diving into the lives of these diverse Idols, all while tapping my feet along to some well-constructed songs.
-
Aug 10, 2023With brilliant writing and acting and a unique way to influence music tracks, Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical makes a big impression. The fact that your choices don't matter much is not that bad, although it is a pity that the soundtrack does not contain any nice sing-alongs.
-
Aug 28, 2023An interesting musical role-playing game, well written and excellently acted but with a little too much carelessness on the aesthetic side and songs not always memorable.
-
Aug 21, 2023Humble Games’ latest offering is a really interesting artistic experiment. While it didn’t leave me thinking that roleplaying musicals will be the wave of the future, I’m glad Summerfall Studios went for such a wild idea. The end result is uneven yet still quite enjoyable. A compelling mystery is bolstered thanks to some great music and strong performances by its cast. It’s a shame that the animation and songwriting can’t match the quality of the other elements, but Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical is still well worth checking out.
-
Aug 15, 2023I hope Stray Gods kicks off a whole new genre, and more from Summerfall Studios in the future.
-
Aug 9, 2023Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical is a novel attempt at offering something new to the video game space. But while it has a strong cast and a well-realized setting, the uneven songs, lack of meaningful player choice and a dull narrative bring down the curtain too soon.
-
Aug 9, 2023With limited role-playing components, a so-so narrative, dialogue choices that don't seem to have significant impact, and a lack of replayability, Strays Gods: The Roleplaying Musical doesn't quite come together as well as it could. Still, this unique blend of styles will scratch those with an itch for an urban fantasy musical with entertaining songs.
-
Aug 9, 2023When I first heard of Stray Gods, I was intrigued. A video game musical might not totally work, but at least it would be interesting to play, I thought. How wrong I was. The concept of Stray Gods is the most interesting thing about it, but the execution is boring to the extreme. If you want a fun musical video game experience, you’re better off watching Singing in the Rain whilst repeatedly changing the volume on the remote. That way you’ll have better songs, a more enjoyable story, more interactivity, and a greater sense of player control than Stray Gods provides.
