    - Level design is utterly bad
    - Popping issues happen 24/7 no matter the rig
    - Story is shallow and characters interaction is really limited
    - World is dull and empty
    - Challenges are baby hard
    - Overall game is way too easy, seems to be aiming the 11 year olds

+ A small batch of levels are gorgeous and feel like nostalgic sonic

Another mediocre 3D Sonic game, please Sega just get a new developer for this franchise already. Even the director has admitted the game wasn't finished but they released it anyway.

As a diehard Sonic fan, it pains me a lot to have to write this

If I compare it with other Sonic games, Sonic Frontiers is the 2nd worst, only above Sonic the hedgehog 2006 (for obvious reasons, since that game had a lot of bugs). It doesn't beat any Sonic Adventure, nor Colours, nor Generations, Unleashed, nor Heroes, nor of course, the unfairly criticized Forces

What happened with Sonic Frontiers? Well, it's a game where all the elements of the Sonic franchise fail: We don't have the colorful visual style, nor the cool music as always (the OST of Frontiers has its moments, but most of the time the music is boring), nor the enemies of the franchise as always

In short, what we have is a game that has mixed genres that separately have succeeded: Monster Hunter, The legend of Zelda, Phantasy Star, Shadows of Colossus, etc. but together, they don't fit together at all. It feels like Sonic has been shoehorned in. Then, with the criticisms of last summer, they have made the "effort" to put the cyberspace stages, but surely, they have done it in a hurry and in a hurry and they have left some very short stages (and to top it off, it is the only authentic thing of the Sonic franchise). As a result, we have a very irregular game, that in no way, can become the cornerstone of the next years. Now we have to wait for the real sales to see if this game "convinces even economically to SEGA" or gives them a bath of reality because it is not acceptable to make an open world that is deserted and built on purpose, to artificially lengthen the duration of the game. It would have been better for them to have continued with the magnificent formula of Sonic Adventure or Generations

    Graphics 5

The game is beautiful in the cyberspace stages, but in the open world it leaves much to be desired. The modeling of the enemies on the Starfall islands is pitiful

    Sound 6

This is the only thing that stands out in the game, and it does so at times. The "sad" or "relaxing" music doesn't suit the hedgehog at all

    Gameplay 3

The cyberspace stages are saved from burning. The open world ones make no sense and everything is made for you to waste your time walking around empty scenarios and the game lasts between 15 and 20 hours.Once platinum is not worth replaying it

    Total 4

The playable aspects weigh heavily on the rating and make the game not fun as a whole. The cyberspace stages are saved but they are too short

The storyline, dialog, and cinematics I have to admit very well done though.

To me, Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast will always be top-tier. The gameplay in Frontiers is frustrating at times simply because of all the combinations of attacks and moves. The trainer is okay to learn the attacks but it just throws you in. I died many times battling the island bosses simply because there is no explanation on how to go about the quick-time reactions.

Another issue is the locked camera, there are times I needed to look at the stages to see if I missed a ring or item. I can't turn around the camera to look back. Plus, batting the bosses also proved difficult because of the camera getting either getting up close to Sonic or so far away you can't see where you are at.

The stages you go through are all the same type, just different arrangments, all based on stages that have been used in the past (Green Hill, Chemical Planet, Sky Sanctuary, City Escape) All 'nostalgic' levels, nothing original other than the music for those stages.

I loved previous Sonic titles because it was simple and enjoyable (for the most part). Frontiers could have worked if it was a new franchise maybe, but to take the Sonic franchise (to me) and make it seem more RPG-ish to nearly grind for items for Sonic to gain new abilities and attacks isn't what a Sonic game is about IMO.

I get that many others love the game. I believe that to be more among the lines of 'Honey Moon' phase, great at first but soon the facts start to settle in once all fan fair dies out, Frontiers will eventually show its flaws. Simply put, Sonic Frontiers is a very complex game for even a veteran Sonic gamer like myself and too complex for its own good.

The only saving grace in this game is the storyline (thanks in part to Ian Flynn), dialog, and cinematics as I said before.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. the physics are garbage compared to both 2d and 3d previous sonic games, with modders already putting out things to fix it after just a few days which makes you wonder if it's this easy for a modder to do in just a few days... what were the devs doing? the dialogue is boring and unimaginative at best and weirdly cringe at worst (except for some moments with eggman that are oddly wholesome). I've also seen plenty of people complain about the way sonic is voice acted. you're often forced into 2d platforming when it shouldn't be necessary and even then, it's easy to fall or miss springs that you should be bounced to directly which sometimes loses you a lot of progress depending on your location in the game. game mechanics are wildly inconsistent with one particular important boss fight relying on game mechanics that feel nothing like a sonic game whatsoever. the majority of your time will be spent on tedious gathering tasks in order to progress while being gated behind messages or areas that break the immersion. these areas are sometimes crucial for complete map exploration meaning you can't unlock the whole map with fast travel on some islands without making progress on the main story line. most animations you should be able to skip past with a simple click of "a" you just can't, and the skills you can level to 99 have to be done 1 by 1 while waiting for an animation to finish before being able to put another single skill level in. most areas and levels within the game feel as if they had little to no playtesting done because you often have to move in ridiculously particular ways to compensate for the failures in game mechanics, physics, and level designs. I really wanted to love this game, but in all honesty unless they fix a ton of issues, it has absolutely no replay value and isn't very memorable in any way besides sections that frustrate the player. beyond that, the amount of hand holding done through dialogue is insane especially when compared with the difficulty of other areas of the game. one redeeming factor is the boss fights and mini boss fights, most of which are done really well, but some rely on weird gimmicks that, again, are more frustrating than actually fun or challenging. in a game where you're supposed to be playing as a super speed hedgehog, it's insane how much the game throws in your path to forcibly slow you down or limit your movement to exactly what they want you to do. all of that being said, I genuinely did enjoy a good amount of this game, especially the fishing, which you can sometimes use to avoid tedious gathering tasks. the developers have stated they're listening to the reviews and are working to fix their failings. I do truly believe this game is the start of a really good change for the franchise, and if they continue with this style and work on some of these issues, the next games will be incredible. Expand

ESPECIALLY the parry system, far too simple and easy for this game. This would be less of an issue for me if the combat wasn't one of the major selling points of the game that they try to treat as their front part. Hell not even using Ragnarock, another series made by Sega, the Yakuza series, deals with the open world combat aspect FAR better then this game.

The level design is awkward as hell, the first island is a perfect example for me, the floating platforms look like they were made by amateur game designers or something I'd see in like, Project 06's test room, not an official level from a game.

The exploration gets old extremely fast, something like Spider-Man PS4 or Breath of the Wild constantly keeps me engaged with continuously adding new things and challenges to explore that don't feel static and video-gamey.

The control and physics are awkward as hell along with the momentum and it's janky as all hell.

Like Frontiers as a game is just the definition to me of "why play this when you can play insert x game here that has the exact same mechanics but done far better", it's an overall mid game and I think Sega missed the "polish" part of this.

Also the story isn't all that great, it's not bad, but I don't know why it's being treated like the second coming of jesus christ.

I won't rehash what everyone else is saying, but here are some of the things that don't make sense:

-Some cutscenes (ie story) are skippable while some aren't (ie animation for bridge being constructed)
-Floating propeller boxes for items can be broken from all sides except for the bottom
-Your attack and defense stats automatically level to the max based on your inventory, but you have to sit through a cut scene for every level of your speed or ring level you increase
-The fishing mini game is programmed to let you aim where you cast, but it doesn't affect the catch rate
-Fish caught in the mini-pame cycle through in the same order, so there is no such thing as rare catches, or a reason behind why some fish award more/less tokens.
-You have to cycle through map filters to fast travel, even though the icons stay the same.
-Sonic gets stuck on most inclines in 2D areas
-Camera doesn't know how to follow sonic in boss battles
-You use the same tokens to talk to friends to talk with the main antagonist (who is an NPC sometimes??)
-The game doesn't stop counting skill points even after you max out your skill tree
-The map will still alert you that you can level up when you are max level just because you have items in your inventory
-Parrying in mid-air makes Sonic float. Parrying also doesn't require any timing
-Most cutscenes are rehashes, and feel like they're added just to pad out game length.
-Tone of the game is very serious, but when you beat a "challenge" stage, Sonic does a little jig to a midi song that doesn't match the rest of the soundtrack
-The fourth island is clearly the top half of the first island that was repurposed (but it does have one of the best overworld themes)
-Lastly, I don't mind any of the music in this game individually, but I wish it followed a consistent theme. Like stick to all emo, or stick to all EDM, or do jazzy little jingles. Nothing about this game feels consistent, just a bunch of ideas that the team floated and then realized they didn't have time to edit.

Not even close. Developers absolutely going in the wrong way. Sonic should be fast character and stopping him should be used only as punishment for player's mistakes. But here we see puzzles that stops player just for nothing, we see very slow cutscenes with main characters doing nothing.
Open world could have been great idea on papers, but ruined with boring grind for story progression.

Cyberspace levels super short, I expected that they will not make same mistake as forces, but they worsened it.

Nasty pop in from environments, some levels are really badly designed and every enemy I faced was a chore (maybe with the exception of some like the button robot, which was really quick).

Feels like this game was pieced together by a committee in order to produce below average rubbish.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The development of sonic frontiers may seem as a straight up insult to the overall costumer base of the game. Not only did they use frontiers as a sandbox for the new formula to be used in the upcoming 10 years, but they also took advantage of facts that were partly true and partly false to their marketing campaign. Take the example of the islands. They promoted 5 islands to explore, while only 4 islands are actually new and explorable, and even then 1 of those is a complete copy paste of the original Kronos island. This is truly worrying for the future of the franchise Expand

This game is abysmal. I don't know how some folks are seeing it as anything other than that, although I suspect most of them are being less than honest. I don't wanna waste any more time than I spent playing this mess, so lets get right into some specifics:

Sonic's controls are not good. I would say it controls like forces, but with a cruel, monkey's paw twist. The boost has been made thoroughly unsatisfying. I've tinkered with all the settings I could to try and make it just right, but either it's barely faster than jogging, or way too fast. If I could use that speed to -say, do death defying jumps I wouldn't mind a little uncontrollable speed. However, jumping makes all your forward velocity vanish. You can try to air-boost to make up for this, but you will never go as fast, AND you drop like a rock. However, unlike Forces, you can turn. Which is probably the lowest possible bar for a game to reach. Regardless of the problems I can identify, there is far more rot under the surface here that I want to address:

You see, there has been a constant problem with how fans try to diagnosis the controls. Where fans identify one problem with them and blame it for everything, to which SEGA randomly decides to "fix". Only for something else to feel wrong. For the longest time the magic word has been "momentum". Which itself is not a accurate measure of what used to make Sonic feel good. The point I'm trying to make is this:

Sonic's controls NEED to be very nuanced.

there is no one secret ingredient to make it feel good. Sonic is inherently a much harder character to make feel good than basically any other platformer. So a whole lot more care has to be taken to make the game fun.

But the controls aren't the only aspect of this game that are in dire straits. The open-world is a chore. No it's not "open-zone". That's a meaningless marketing buzzword to make it sound like the Dev's have created something new and original. Which is something this games sorely lacks. Almost every 5 steps I take I get trapped by a boost pad or a spring and forced into an incoherent platforming "challenge". This is especially pronounced in the third island where you constantly lose control, and are forced into mandatory 2d sections (which Sonic controls noticeably worse in).

Speaking of the islands, there are TECHNICALLY 5 of them. 3 of them are themed exactly the same. And two of those are literally opposite sides of the same island, leaving both halves feeling severely lacking.

But we don't just have an open world in this game, we also have traditional levels called "cyberspace". Every aspect of the cyberspace levels are stolen from other, better games. And if that were all, I'd wouldn't complain that much. But for some reason sonic controls so much WORSE in these levels. Worse than forces even!

The games combat is just about the only thing that is "okay". It lacks any originality, but I didn't want to smash my controller like I did with the platforming. The "big new feature" of this games combat (and it's "puzzles", which is a very charitable description for some of them) is the cyloop. Where you draw a circle and then... something happens (whatever needs to happen at the time. Cyloop-Ex-Machina).
Which if drawing circles sounds appealing to you, I recommend you check out the Pokemon Ranger games. Way more fun there, and somehow the dumb Pokemon side-games also have better stories than this one.

Speaking of which, the plot of the game is at best "meh" and at worse incomprehensibly stupid. I must admit though, the character interactions is where I got most of my enjoyment from the game. It's a genuine breath of fresh air to see Sonic and friends actually act... friendly. So while the plot is a mess, at least the characters are pretty decent. The new character Sage is a standout, much like Shadow was in SA2. Which is the biggest complement I can give. Even so, I could've saved myself the trouble and watch these cutscenes on Youtube instead of wasting my time with the actual game.

Music in this game is also no where near the standard this series has had. There was only one song I actively enjoyed, and it only played at the end credits. Sonic Forces had music LEAGUES better than this. Despite being- well, Sonic Forces.

My first playthrough of this game took a little over 10 hours from start to finish. Including the "true final boss" (that boss isn't good by the way). Well under the advertised 20 hours. even so, I didn't enjoy 90% of those 10 hours, I only played that long to make sure I can give this a fair review. I mean at least Sonic Forces was merciful enough to be short.

This game is not worth 60 dollars. I'd struggle to recommend it at 10 bucks. And I make that assessment without even considering the poor technical aspects of the game.

If you want a fun Sonic-like game, go spend 30 dollars on Spark the Electric Jester 3.

The combat in this game is boring and repetitive. The story is a joke and so are the puzzles. The textures are awful and the greedy developers had the nerve to slap a $60 price tag on this game, not to mention how horrible the rain looks.

There is nothing to do in the open world. It is the typical modern open world game. Just a boring and empty world full of rocks and plants. Speaking of plants, it doesn't even react to your movement. I'm sick to death of developers making open world games in empty landscapes. Why aren't there enough human-made materials or built environments? Oh that's right, because that would actually require hard work. It's easier to just copy/paste plants everywhere and play around with the elevation tools to create hills and rocks. Nothing in this game feels well thought out. It just feels like these developers randomly added things into the open world and called it a day.

There is no multiplayer. So once you beat the story, there is literally not a reason to play this game again. Charging $60 for a game with no replay value is a cash grab. It's funny how these empty open world games rarely have multiplayer. It's almost as if these greedy and lazy developers don't want to work, which is why these barren landscapes are common in AAA open world games. I only recommend this game until it is $15 or less.

Safe to say, the story is poorly presented and BORING, while the bosses were very hit or miss. The game suffers from a massive lack of cohesion. Nothing feels naturally integrated in the world, only a handful of bosses genuinely impressed me, and yet for some reason they decided to completely butcher the final boss.

I think I could say that it was a reasonable to expect like, 5 different open zone themes, and 10 cyberspace themes across 30 levels. What we got was pathetic however, 5 open zones with 3 sharing the same grassy plains theme, and merely 4 cyberspace themes, with most levels being **** green hill.

I would have stomached all of this if the controls were good, but it's complete ass imo. The pop in and jank also add to my frustration.

I genuinely wanted to like this game, but 5 years from forces and what we get is a mediocre product that has the potential to be good? No thank you, I'm not giving sonic team slack for this entry, and it's astounding that this game is praised by a masterpiece by sonic fans. Worst of all, if you pick up a collectible on one of the flying rails,

It's really just an Unreal Engine map with Sonic objects inserted. Uncreative and boring.
A few speedpads just lie on the floor.

The Cyberspace levels are pretty straightforward and short.
As far as I know they always use the same three or four designs.
One of them is Green Hill.
Also reuses level designs from previous games in Cyberspace.

Sonic's speed is frustratingly slow, and you lose momentum every time you don't run straight ahead.
All attacks except the Cyloop are just cutscenes with no feedback or anything.
Combat in this game is really just button mashing.

The game has too many graphical problems.
Especially the popping of objects from 10 metres away looks really stupid.
On an RTX 3080ti and Ryzen 5 5600x.

    The physics are buggy.
Sonic keeps getting stuck on the ground and walls.
In the tower boss, Sonic always got stuck on the boss during the cyloop because you can climb on it.

I just watched the story on youtube because I returned the game.
At least it is better than anything that has come out since Colours.
But that doesn't mean anything because it doesn't reach the story of the other games.
It's still mainly just a Sonic story.

And you can only play as Sonic...

Feels more like a step BACK for Sonic than a step forward. The idea of open zones is good in concept and a great way to allow Sonic to stretch his legs! However, as with the many Dark Age games they are attempting to hearken back to, the execution falls flat. Ambition cannot carry a game. The game's not buggy like games from that era, which is a positive, but that's all I really have toFeels more like a step BACK for Sonic than a step forward. The idea of open zones is good in concept and a great way to allow Sonic to stretch his legs! However, as with the many Dark Age games they are attempting to hearken back to, the execution falls flat. Ambition cannot carry a game. The game's not buggy like games from that era, which is a positive, but that's all I really have to say.

The world design is one of the most apparent issues. It's been said many times, but these worlds are uninspired, much more resembling Xenoblade or default Unreal Engine maps that lack personality, not the "semi-realistic but abstract and vibrant" atmospheres Sonic is known for. Not helping is the random fururistic-esque Sonic elements scattered throughout and haphazardly placed in the air, completely disregarding the overworld around it. There's no cohesion or direction, even as the biomes change between the three main islands. I get that they were trying for a Breath of the Wild-esque feel, but it lacks the cohesion that Breath of the Wild succeeds at. Abandoned, empty field world (though even Breath of the Wild had inhabited areas and traveling NPCs to bring life to the world) with magitek ruins scattered about is done to death at this point. Combine that with the knock-off Korok puzzles and you have basically a theme park version of Breath of the Wild without any of the character.

The gameplay, while allowing for tighter turns/maneuvers, has its' own issues. The camera spends more time trying to look cool rather than being functional, which (combined with the pop-in problems of Hedgehog Engine 2) makes traversal challenges a pain. The previously successful boost gameplay feels stiff (especially noticeable in the Cyberspace stages, more on that later) and the game tacks on a rather unnecessary upgrade system with EXP that allows you to unlock moves that have little reason to use them (both being a problem Unleashed had as well). i get that they're probably trying to appeal to the Japanese market with this game, but shoehorning skill trees and JRPG elements is not the way to go. Some of the move ideas are good, giving Sonic a ranged attack feels like it has some utility, but the combat is repetitive and unsatisfying in a way where you're better off just spamming the combo button. It would've been way more satisfying if there were less moves but they kept the more useful ones and had them unlocked from the beginning (along with granting some extra movement options). It would give Sonic more utility. But with the way it currently is it feels like Sonic is trying to fix what isn't broken and be something he isn't. SEGA needs some kind of consistency, they cannot afford to keep rolling the dice.

Story and tone overall was way too somber. Sonic games will typically be upbeat even when much more serious, the Adventure games are a fantastic example of that. Despite trying to recapture that Adventure magic apparently, the game falls flat and tries to be a grand epic about self-reflection, with no dynamic emotions whatsoever. Some of the character interactions are good, notably Sonic/Knuckles and Eggman/Sage, but the flat delivery of the dialogue/cutscenes and near-constant melancholy atmosphere drag the plot down and make it at times feel like a chore to play. "Too Bleak, Stopped Caring" felt very much in effect. Sonic's little dance when getting a Chaos Emerald, though, was a welcome change of pace in the otherwise gloomy atmosphere. The overall attempt at a mystery plot leaves more questions than answers, and retcons elements of Adventure 1 lore (or simply tries to repeat what it does, while failing to recapture what made it work).

Music is another low point. Somber, repetitive piano tunes or desert drum ambiance b=fit with Sonic about as well as peanut butter and salmon, and this is especially egregious in a game about catchy music. The Theme musics are typical Dark Age fare, and the Cyberspace music, while okay, does bring in some much needed energy that the overworld lacks.

Cyberspace levels are hampered by Frontiers' changes to the boost mechanics, along with being somewhat too easy and limited to only four themes. Sonic Team asset reuse is in full force here as well, reusing layouts from boost-era games (even if it plays into the narrative) along with Generations assets for three of the four themes. Nonetheless, they're an enjoyable break from the doldrums of the overworld gameplay.

Overall, while an open-zone format has a lot of potential, and there's a few little good tidbits, the game's shortcomings bring it down tremendously. The Dark Age was not a good era to take inspiration from, and it fails to make the impact of the Adventure games it is trying to pay homage to. I personally believe that the franchise isn't going in a good direction. You can be serious without sacrificing what makes Sonic well... Sonic. Overall, the game lacks personality and charm you'd expect from the franchise.

The visuals are boring to look at. The colors are so desaturated, uninteresting to the eye, devoid of any artstyle that evokes "Sonic". The visuals are boring to look at. The colors are so desaturated, uninteresting to the eye, devoid of any artstyle that evokes "Sonic". Sonic's model pops out so badly in all of this because of its own saturated colors and lighting. The enemies are uninteresting geometric designs lacking any character, that look like they were pulled out from another kind of game.
Sonic Team learned nothing from Sonic '06's bland enemy designs.

A lot of the cutscenes feel like they were done in Source Film Maker lacking any proper framing, lighting, dynamic angles or emotion from the characters.
In-game when characters interact with each other, they barely move their limbs to express any kind of emotion or reaction. There's a handful cutscenes where this is not as much of an issue which shows cutscene animation was an afterthought for the most part.

The "open world" nature works for Sonic's high speed but the concept is not utilized well. Entire sections are blocked off with invisible walls, you cannot abuse momentum to go through sections in different ways as there really is not much of it and the level design is very uninteresting. Random floating rails, springs and platforms is something that gets repeated over and over in all of the island areas. Not only they look jarring but also serve as padding, as if you fail and fall down, you'll have to do it all over again. Complete with objects sometimes glitching and randomly popping in the view potentially obstructing your flow.

The game wants to feel that their combat system is clever but most of the time you can just get away with mashing random buttons and if that doesn't work, just draw a circle around an object with the Cyloop ability and see if that helps. Rinse and repeat.

The physics feel buggy, Sonic reacts to the smallest bump on the terrain and glitches around which makes it look so jarring. It feels even worse when he has to scale on moving objects such as the giant bosses. The physics for some reason feel a lot worse in the Cyberspace levels.

The puzzles feel like a very last minute addition and they break the game's pace. Easily the worst padding and section of the game. Sonic Team learned nothing about breaking the pace with Big's fishing back in Sonic Adventure. Speaking of fishing, the fishing minigame is very shallow, just requiring you to wait and press a button to win. It lacks any depth that other fishing minigames have, such as reel fighting with the fish and watching your line tension.

Sonic is the only person playable in this game. Again. For the longest time, Sonic Team refuses to let us play with any of the other characters. If anything they could have had Knuckles accompany Sonic and handle all of the combat and climbing. Better yet, this should have been a Knuckles game, the entirety of the story feels more personal to Knuckles if anything.

Story was okay for what it was trying to do, but some moments felt forced and some other moments had buildup but did not go anywhere in the end.

The music feels very melancholic and generic all the time, the Cyberspace tracks are the best and these levels do not last long but are the best tracks that remind you of Sonic's peppy character.
The sound effects sometimes feel that they don't fit with the context, like the Sonic Adventure woosh sfx used for an enemy's short dash move.

The voice acting feels very forced and weird, the characters' voices sound like nothing we ever heard from this series. Sometimes they sound too serious to the point I can hear their normal talking voice surface.

Sonic Team needs to allocate time to actually create a GAME and not an engine + a tech demo packaging it as a complete $60 game. They wasted time creating an engine with Forces and they did it again with Frontiers and barely had any time left to flesh out meaningful game mechanics to go with it.

Sonic fans love to talk about a "Step forward" So much so, they never even consider where they're currently standing. For the past decade, Sonic has been nothing but terrible release after terrible release. This game is no exception. Instead of giving it the dismantling it bloody well deserves, they look forward "positively" about the next installment. It's an admirable sentiment, But they neglect something: we're not at the next installment, now are we? We don't know when, where or what the next installment will be. We don't know it's quality. We don't know if it will be rushed, and we don't know if Sega files bankruptcy between now and then as the economy crumbles.
And what happens if you point all of this out or fairly critique the game? They will smash down harder than a Bio-Lizard with a space colony up its rear. And they will flood you with endless bad faith justifications for their - let's be frank - brand addiction. Didn't play the game because you can tell by looking that it's not what you want? "You're being toxic. You didn't play it so you cant say anything negative" Played a little and hated it? "You're being toxic. You need to spend [arbitrary number] hours playing to give it a fair shake." You 100% completed it? "You're being toxic. You like the game if you completed it so why are you complaining?" The fandom has ushered in this dubious state of affairs and they cheer it on with uproarious applause... Every bad remaster of a decade+ old game? Blame the fans, because they create a culture where awfulness is acceptable.

There's a fascinating irony about all of this - Sonic in his early days was about moving forward, and freedom but ever since 06, the series has stagnated. There is this insultingly cynical recycling of Nostalgic locals. that have ruined those stages for me in their original games in retrospect. Control and freedom has been surgically stolen from the player with each installment until you got the brain-dead mechanics of Forces, and after a 5 year hiatus from games with next to no information, Frontiers drunkenly staggers onto market immediately making it apparent why Sonic's control has been removed from you:
Sega, and Sonic Team have no idea what they're doing and you can tell. I do not care how "Mean" this sounds to the hard working devs," a functional company would have dressed every single individual responsible for these missteps down and fired them. and replaced them with a bevy of the many talented modders and fangame creators that exist in their fandom. Sega's most prominent IP cannot seem to get a good reputation in gaming - this is how studios get shut down. I'm not being overdramatic, this kind of stuff destroys consumer trust, and the fans who cheer it on are kicking a quality can down the road when they themselves have the power to stop it by voting with their wallet.

Sonic suffers from Poor leadership and incompetency. Why are there so many control sliders? It's not "accessibility," It's a crutch. It's because they themselves don't know how to program a Sonic that feels intuitive to play and outsourced that responsibility to the player with the cynical abandon of a self checkout.
Even with the sliders, Sonic looks and feels like ass to play. He sticks to the ground, loses all momentum when jumping, feels unnaturally scripted, cannot intuitively run on terrain Sonic (the character) absolutely should be able to run on (unless the game tells you to), goes flying facing sideways off small pebbles and the combat feels incongruous with his movement setup. There are zero excuses for this: Even shooters have begun to grasp physics, movement, and character consistency. And this doesn't even address the rampant rendering issues.

I give the game credit for it's music. Doesn't brick a system and that's about it - below the bare minimum. If the community were more honest, this game would hover around a 5 or a 6 rating. It's ok to like the concept or idea for the future, but guys, this is a sixty dollar game. I didn't buy into a glorified alpha or a promise of what's to come "later". I brought this game. I want to have fun with this game now. I don't care about "potential" because none of that currently exists.

...It feels like the Sonic community stopped caring about the quality of a release and are just happy to get one, which I empathize with. Still, I will never appreciate positive review bombing a game at the expense of the consumer. When the afterglow wears of, Sonic fans will acknowledge it's bad everyone will mock it for decades, and the cycle will repeat - as it did for forces, as it did for Lost World, and as it did for Generations. Sonic is a dying gaming icon. He'll exist in other forms, sure, but as a game? My predictions aren't green hills for the blue blur.

And then grass again for some reason. And again. Out of all the sonic levels , you were inspired by these ? OK. Sonic is slowest he's ever felt. Especially in the cyberspace. The cyberspace is the dumbest excuse possible. Oh , so sonic needs to regain his memories and play through green hill and chemical plant again. Like in sonic generations...And forces... And mania... how original !! Look I would've been cool if the open world was themed on Greenhill and chemical plant, but the linear format with them has gotten so stale...atleast the level design is great right ?ofcourse it is. The cyberspace has got incredible level design. Since it's from other better games. Yeah , I liked unleashed gens and adventure. I don't want to pay money to play them again but worse. The engine control and physics were not designed for these levels. Putting them here will not make your game good because you know once they run out of levels to steal their game would be awful. The combat is not that cool as they'd want it to be you just mash the attack button. You don't really need to do any combos since you level up quickly anyway. And they don't look good. Sonic jumps in the air and throws balls at the enemy- What is this ?? Is this what the character is known for ? The animation is godawful. Voice direction is bad too. The character is now a 40 year old man. I thought he was 15 ? But hey , atleast the dark story pays off. oh my god eggman has a daughter. sonics freinds are completely different. They're so lifeless. They don't move or animate, they're just talking. Reading a script. Why do the animations look straight out of a fangame ? Sonic himself doesn't animate that much and it's not to be neglected for an open world game where he's the only focus. Anyway I'm tired of talking about this game . Expand

They could do so much better. They wanted the same impact like 'Sonic Adventure' did, but

They could do so much better.

They wanted the same impact like 'Sonic Adventure' did, but if you compere this two, Frontiers is soooo bad.
Like all the stage has the same old design, and that fine for some levels, but not ALL OF THEM. Not even single one new design. When in SA every lvl was different. In SA it was interesting to replay the stages, and you could play some new missions after completing the game. Here almost all stages you could beet at 100% from the first try.
But if you read about first open-world Sonic game, and decided not to finish some island at 100% you couldn't come back later, cuz it's not open-world. And after game is finished, that's it. You can only start a new game.

And the whole thing with collect memories is super boring. They could do them like 10-20 instead of 100, just hide them and make interesting to look for. Like give us the real memories of characters, instead of just some figures.
And why the only two female characters both have Hearts as they memories figures, while Tails and Knuckles have unique ones? Probably cuz they stop working on the game after 3 island. Or mb they are just sexists and didn't come up with something interesting for girls but hearts. Idk.

They should did Amy, Knuckles and Tails playable from the start, to show us what happening to them. And the fishing part looking so stupid.... I loved playing as Big in SA, but here it looks ridiculous. But i should agree, it's useful, cuz at the last island you would be soo bored of the game, and you wont wanna look for the memories for the 4 time, so catch some fish and trade for the memories instead is sooo good to finish earlier.

And some Koko instead of Chao? Really? Nah, chao deserve something better than this game anyway.
I could say so much more, but im just pissed that game has 8 score and someone even voting for the game of the year. It would be so lame if developers would see that people liked it and will continued to make games like this.

I'm going to start by saying I grew up with Sonic, I've seen the ups and downs, and I watched the Cartoon. I've enjoyed everything Sega has made to this point. I loved '06 as buggy and bad as it was and even Forces. I also love open-world games, Saints Row IV, Genshin Impact to a degree, Spiderman Games, etc. This game itself is just terrible though. This feels like a step in the right direction alright... After walking a mile back.

I can only think of Three things I actually liked about the game and that's:
-Super Sonic for Bosses 1, 2, and 3. (Boss 4 was just bad.)
-The Rail Bits actually felt nice to play.
    -And the Licensed Music.

    The cons:
-Cyberspace levels were too short in the sense that some were only about 30 seconds long
-The combat was extremely rough and didn't feel like Sonic, I would much rather have the homing attack with instant-pop enemies back than have this combat again. They either don't drop enough exp to be worth the time to fight them, or they take too long to even be fun so I just started skipping them all together and just spent time grinding exp on springs and when I did get in fights, I would just Spam Sonic Boom or the Multi-Homing Shot because the combat felt very clunky since you had to rely on dodging or parrying most of the time. Heck if it wasn't Boss/Guardian I would go in for a combo and straight see them pull out a barrier after two hits.
-Sonic himself feels broken as his boost just feels like he's just picking up running speed from a brisk walk instead of running at the speed of sound, no one can push that hedgehog around, we got ourselves a situation, stuck in a new location, without any explanation. His homing attack just feels like a gap closer and not something you can chain together, His boost speed is tied to his ring count which is a bad thing because I would much rather not have to keep my HP LOW to easily achieve max boost speed.
-When people talk about momentum being an issue it's with the fact that the combat isn't fluid and momentum stops dead in its tracks with almost everything because Guardians always cut away at them, sonic is always stopping dead in his tracks to making comments before you can resume running even with the option turned off, The combat is more stop and fight or run away instead of the instant pop enemies that would just keep the pace going. The amount of collectables needed to do anything is terrible since you need gears for Portals to give you keys to get you emeralds, but you can't do any of that without wandering around and either finding a gear randomly or through fighting a guardian which is very boring. The amount of memory tokens is also bad for the main story since at one point I had to collect 100+ to progress. I don't mind getting collectables but that's a bit much. Like Side stories? Sure! but I wanted to get through the story, once I hit that wall I had to be bored again.

-I also hit several invisible walls because I wasn't at that point in the story yet, so instead of say a red glitchy forcefield or whatever, Sonic just flies away like he was coated in butter and dies.

-This game feels like Breath of the Wild featuring Sonic because of the Kokos and overall gameplay and the narrative of "Something terrible is sleeping and you need to beat it because it will destroy everything and it's also the cause of the enemies." I hate the Kokos and wound up skipping EVERY cutscene that had them in them because of the terrible noise they make for even existing, I would much rather they be silent than sound like toddlers with rattles, I WOULD RATHER HEAR OMACHAO 24/7 AND Use the rings I collect for stat upgrades than to collect the stupid rock babies that belong in a dumpster, I probably missed half of the story but oh well. They're everywhere, the two old people (As well as a lot of this game) are unnecessary, and I went out of my way to avoid them as much as possible.

This game should have been just another game like Unleashed, '06, Forces, or Colors. I am someone who prefers that Sonic stick to his actual gameplay of zipping around with simplicity for attacks and a boost that feels like I going to break the sound barrier while racing through a stage with objects flying forward with wind ripples that this. All you BotW fans can stay out of Sonic, this game was not the right one.

esto es una vergüenza para el verdadero Sonic, solo usan el nombre para moler más dinero, nada más. muy mal intento de juego.

5 years for a half-baked game with awful controls, repetitive gameplay and level design that rivals a child going insane at the Halo Forge. Maybe next time Sonic Team.

Rendimiento pésimo, popping constante, historia básica, coleccionables sin sentido, es sin duda alguna el peor juego de sega de la historia

The idea and vision of the game is absolutely fabulous. In practice, however, the game is brought down by its execution, which you can see through after a short while and then the game has nothing to surprise you with. [Issue#324]

There is nothing remotely redeeming about this game. Nothing that even the most die-hard loyal Sonic Fans would or should advocate for. I hope that one day someone who cares enough about this franchise could give us something-anything of substance. A fan can hope, can’t they? A fan can hope.

Finally, after almost 25years of half measures and mostly mediocre titles, Sonic has finally reached the 3D levels of gameplay it needed to reach. Yes, the pop in is absolutely inexcusable and the ancient gatekeeping grindy methods damage the flow of the game for no reason, but a wonderfully built base exists here, with a highly entertaining adventure in wonderfully melancholic world and a surprisingly well founded story, thankfully clean of Sonic’s annoying 3rd tier friends!
