May 2, 2024It’s into this rich version of Sea of Thieves that the PlayStation 5 embarks – the latest in a series of Microsoft first-party titles coming to Sony’s machine. And what newcomers will find is an absolutely perfect translation of the current Xbox version, retaining the mannered visual splendour, with its stunningly authentic water physics, luminous sunsets and enticingly tropical islands. Experienced players will be able to quickly and seamlessly link to their Xbox accounts, while cross-play between the consoles and the PC is similarly painless. At the start of the game, you chose a boat (sloop, brigantine or galleon), invite friends from the list or select an open crew to play with strangers (Rare runs its own message boards to help players meet up and organise a voyage together), and you’re off.

Jul 15, 2024Sea of Thieves is highly recommendable in 2024. Beautiful to tears, gripping and incredibly immersive, it's a real bubble of fresh air to do with a group of friends who are also fans of piracy. Accessible, but deep, complete and full of things to discover, the game does not offer any redundant mechanics and never forces us to grind unlike many service games. So much so that it’s even quite destabilizing at first. But once you have crossed this threshold, once you agree to play just... to play and have fun, and not to perform and win, the pleasure is increased tenfold. A must have to discover with your friends. On the other hand, for solo players, Sea of Thieves will not really be recommended. Not only do we lose a dimension of camaraderie on which the game relies heavily, but as a bonus it will be difficult to get by, unless you opt for peaceful mode without any players to face. But here again, we completely lose what makes all the sea salt of the game and that would be a real shame.

May 6, 2024Sea of Thieves on PS5 is another great way to play a good multiplayer game. There’s a lot more content now than at launch, with tons of things to do either solo or with a crew. With cross-play and save, a wealth of convenience options, and even more coming down the pirate pipeline, this may be the perfect time to brave the Sea of Thieves.

Apr 29, 2024Sea of Thieves is a blast when playing with friends. With its focus on cosmetic customisation, we slipped into the pirate’s life with ease – even after six years of updates and seasonal changes. Its natural and immersive approach to navigation makes it a seafaring sandbox well worth visiting, and a focus on cosmetics over high-tier loot make it a game you can play at your own pace. It’s a delight to steadily come to grips with the mechanics of the game too, whether that be how to outmanoeuvre enemy ships or sell your loot with quickened efficiency. It might not have the same level of grind that a lot of players look for in a live service game, but there’s endless pirate fun to be had here, and we’re glad that PlayStation players finally have the opportunity to join in on the swashbuckling chaos.

Apr 29, 2024Not all treasures are made of gold and silver. Sea of Thieves lands on PlayStation 5, once again proving that this cooperative pirate adventure is the experience that many seek, but few find. It is not a perfect game, but its world and possibilities offer a journey that is as original as it is fun.

Jul 8, 2024Sea of Thieves is a gem from Rare and Xbox Game Studios for PS5. It offers a highly engaging experience for those seeking casual fun with friends and family. On the other hand, the single-player mode may not be as compelling as the rest of the game.

May 15, 2024Released raw then polished by waves of updates rich in new features, Sea of Thieves is one of the most fun multiplayer games of recent years. Intelligently relying on feedback from its community to never know the bottom of the wave, it now has the modes, features, and quests so that everyone can find something for themselves. If Rare's software encourages deceit, the British studio has not made fun of us over the last six years! Packed with things to do, with a superb atmosphere, SoT is also demanding, even slightly unfair when the precarious alliances evaporate like grog on the sand. But that’s also why we love it.

May 3, 2024Rare charted its course, and created a true treasure in Sea of Thieves. Its only lows found in solo gameplay, and its one dimensional melee combat. It is the king of emergent gameplay, and boasts a timeless aesthetic. With other issues such as the tedious downtime fixed, and a great many quality of life and accessibility changes, through years of dedication and continued support, Sea of Thieves is the best game as a service on the market.

May 21, 2024Sea of Thieves on the PlayStation 5 is a game that absolutely holds its own. Playing especially a crew is incredibly fun and there is plenty to do and explore. You also get plenty of customization options and the combat is very cool, although it does feel a bit stiff. Too bad is the graphical pop-in and the somewhat repetitive structure of missions, but if you look past that, a wonderful adventure awaits you.
-
May 10, 2024Sea of Thieves is a nice addition to the PlayStation's catalog of multiplayer games around the world. The game itself will benefit from an increase in the player base and more interest in Rare's multiplayer game. Despite never delving into any aspect of what it proposes and being an unpleasant single-player experience, the magic of cooperation and the freedom to enjoy the game without much commitment are the great attractions in a new world of piracy.
-
May 5, 2024Sea of Thieves has grown into one of the more beloved live service titles over the years and it's well-deserved, offering a gorgeous and engaging pirate fantasy.
-
May 3, 2024Even after six years, Sea Of Thieves remains a great time with friends, and now, with the PlayStation 5 port, even more friends can join in the hilariously fun high sea adventures.
-
Apr 30, 2024Cross-play with Xbox and PC players works incredibly smoothly, meaning that PS5 players should have no problem joining the pirate legions of scallywags that populate Sea of Thieves. At first, especially in single-player, the game can feel like a big blue ocean with incredible scenery and not a lot else. It's when players are completing missions with friends and raising their ranks with guilds that Sea of Thieves excels most.
-
Apr 29, 2024The excellent PS5 adaptation of Sea of Thieves maintains its charm and extensive content, despite occasional bugs. It’s a great multiplayer adventure with cross-play, enhanced by DualSense features, but it requires long-term dedication and social interaction to fully enjoy.
-
Apr 29, 2024Sea of Thieves is a great game that offers a lot. Between the PvE elements, PvP chaos, story missions, added content, and the upcoming Season 12, there’s a ton to engage with. Playing solo may be a mixed experience, but when it clicked, there was so much to enjoy with your time on the sea. Hitting the high seas with a crew is a genuine blast, leading to absolute chaos in no time flat.

PLAYJul 24, 2024Matchmaking and communication could do with some work, but they’re can’t drag down what is undeniably a joyful experience… with the right people. [Issue#42, p.98]

May 6, 2024Sea of Thieves has made enough improvements that I will likely rally the sea dogs I used to sail with back together to complete both adventures and have some fun. With the PS5 release, I can also make some new friends in the game. The biggest hurdle overall to the PS5 release is that this isn’t anything special for anyone who has played this on either a PC or Xbox.
-
May 3, 2024One of the best live service games comes to PlayStation 5 and while the combat is still frustratingly flaccid the sense of camaraderie and exploration is second to none.
