    It's this versatility that makes the PS5 version of Maid of Sker worthwhile. Players who enjoyed the core game, warts and all, can turn to challenges of increasing difficulty, while others who prefer atmosphere can go through a less arduous version of its story. It still relies too heavily on horror game standards when some more originality would have helped, but as a fun, brief, and sometimes very scary venture it's a good option.

    With that being said, Maid of Sker is still hugely entertaining, especially for people that are aware of the literary traditions that it's tapping into. As an aesthetic, it's probably a little nuanced and subtle for its own good (let's face it, the video game sector isn't big on rewarding nuance and subtlety), but it's great and distinctive. It's just disappointing that the development team struggled so hard in their efforts to make a compelling game to go with it.

    Maid of Sker is certainly a better game now than it was a year ago, no matter what format you play it on. It’s still doesn’t quite achieve its potential though, and while there are some clear improvements on PS5, there are unfortunately more disappointments. While it’s nice to finally be able to play the game with a silky smooth frame rate and responsive controls on console, it’s a shame that to achieve that you have to opt for visuals that don’t really impress. In you’re in the mood for an atmospheric horror you’ll probably eke some enjoyment out of this improved Maid of Sker, but you’ll soon forget the experience.

    I anticipated a touching, engrossing tale of a heartbreaking and folkloric haunt. What I got was a bog-standard, overly conservative horror game mired by mechanics more ancient than the game’s late 1800’s setting. Like the lifeless meatbags which stalk its murky hallways, Maid of Sker is best avoided.

    Hab erst auf Einfach gespielt mit Gegnern, die aber so generisch und nervend waren sowie nicht ins Spiel gepasst haben, dass ich nochmal neu angefangen habe auf noch leichter, dann ohne Gegner. Dann hatte ich viel Spaß mit dem Spiel. Die düstere Atmosphäre hat mir sehr gefallen. Wer auf Horror-Spiele spielt, ob mit oder ohne Kampf, kann hier gut zuschlagen.

    So eine Wahl bei den Schwierigkeitsgraden zu haben, finde ich übrigens super. Können sich viele gerne abschauen, je nachdem worauf der Spieler Lust hat, kann er dann wählen. Hier hat es mir ohne Gegner eben viel besser gepasst, um die Atmosphäre zu genießen.    … Full Review »
