    For such a short game, the time seems to run in slow motion as you sneak around. There is no problem at all with the game’s length. Instead, the real struggle is with a lackluster story and movements. Besides these issues, everything else is brilliant. From the stress of being quiet to the chase scenes that leave you needing to take a small break in the comfort of a safe area. It feels like forever since I have played a good stealth game, and now I can say the counter has reset. The uneasiness of walking around the hotel with random jump scares and nerve-wracking sounds is quite remarkable. It’s also very replayable, with two different endings as well as lots of things to collect around the hotel. There are even achievements for completing it without getting hit and without saving. This is an all-around great title to own, especially for horror fans.

    Maid of Sker is a compelling and visually stunning experience for any horror fan and brings true stealth horror with 3D sound against you at it’s core. This may not be the longest game ever, but if this is the future of horror gaming then I welcome it with open arms.

    Maid of Sker on Xbox One is a very good horror experience; one that manages to create an extremely creepy atmosphere and delivers a good story throughout. The whole sound department needs a round of applause, especially the renditions of the hymns, but it is the entire save system that dampens the enjoyment of the game.

    Maid of Sker is a mix between survival horror and walking simulator that, despite having good ideas, accumulates some of the problems of both genres.

    While its setting and story are initially intriguing, the experience of playing the game becomes painful over time. Enemies are plentiful and tough to avoid, and the tools that you do have at your disposal are frequently hampered by extreme item scarcity. The complete removal of UI or any helpful visual cues makes stealth encounters a chore. The moments of satisfying key-hunting are bogged down by a world that is a frustrating bore to explore. In retrospect, I wish I could stay in the "before" times, on the other side of that grand reopening banner. At least then, I was optimistic about what awaited inside.

October 1897, You're summoned to the Island of Sker, in search of Elizabeth, who sent you a letter with some strange requests. You're to Compose a counter song, the Siren's Song, an evil song broken into four parts, of which you must find first. The plot is wrapped around a welch ghost story, and real place in South Whales, though the actual location isn't in the game. The gameplay is lost between a Puzzle game and Horror Survival, as you have to figure out the environment to continue. You have limited ability to fight back when you're discovered, so stealth is you're the best approach. There is even an achievement to collect for never using the only weapon you're given. Being discovered isn't always the end, as where you actually have your health to worry about. Most of the enemies begin attacking you and there are ways to escape. The game has multiple endings to discover, so there is replayability, not to mention the completionist achievements. Not quite steeped in the horror of jumpscares and hopelessness, Maid of Sker saturates you in the ambiance of the setting steeping the darkness and keeping the mood darker. Maid of Sker was an experience that should be had by most Horror fans, but don't be disappointed when you don't wet your pants, the fear is deeper here.… Expand

Go to a spooky place in the middle of nowhere, because someone our nameless, characterless protagonist cares about, told us so, and the predictability continues on from there. The weird key to weird lock dynamic from Resident Evil is satisfying, the level design overall is pretty good, but the gameplay itself is tedious not scary. Enemies are incredibly easy to avoid, so its simply a case of walking around really slowly in the dark, completing the same multi-lock puzzle mechanic repeatedly. Every now and then a loud sound would emanate from my TV, as if something scary had happened. I always either missed it, or the sound itself was the scare. I would say that the voice acting from the desperate lover our protagonist is persisting towards, was convincing enough to keep me invested. However, its a good job the game isn't much longer than it is, otherwise I'd have just given up out of boredom before the end.… Expand
