Mafia: The Old Country

Mafia: The Old Country could easily have been phoned in but the effort is evident - it sincerely does its best, and its best is good enough. Will it make a huge mark on history? Unlikely. Is its “pseudopen” world a vestigial albatross? Absolutely. Did I enjoy it? Perfectly adequately.

Mafia: The Old Country is superb in some aspects, delivering a few hours of fun in an inviting world at a modest price. However, it fails to offer improved gameplay and has an uninspiring story and narrative.

Mafia escapades in Sicily feel fresh and entertaining, yet they serve as a reminder that a linear film and an interactive game are two very different experiences. The strong narrative focus and the deliberate choice to avoid open-world trends are commendable, but sadly, the limited freedom and lack of side content hold it back from reaching true greatness.

A game of two halves as they say, with one half modern and slick and attractive, while the gameplay half is simplistic and sometimes an obstacle, although other times it can be fun, if limited. Play it for the story and setting.

Mafia: The Old Country strips back much of what weighed Hanger 13's previous entry down. While the story and gameplay rely solely on solid and well-trodden tropes in a much more linear design, the intense focus on great characters and a gorgeous Sicilian setting make this a leaner experience that's worth the lower price of admission. This Mafioso family has a long way to go to re-establish its place at the head of the table, but the beginnings of its criminal enterprise are promising.

Mafia: The Old Country is a visual and narrative journey that captures the linear and cinematic essence of the series, but stumbles in terms of gameplay. Its story, though predictable, is well told and supported by a memorable supporting cast and outstanding setting. However, the basic mechanics, limited AI, and lack of ambition in progression make it feel more like a tribute that fails to break the mold than a triumphant return.

Mafia: The Old Country is the kind of game that a true fan can respect. It’s a strike of lightning back to the soul of Mafia, quiet, violent, ritualistic, and weighed down by tradition. The visuals, the writing, the performances, they all deliver that rare feeling of authenticity and mood that modern open worlds often sacrifice. But, as someone who still chafes at regimented stealth, repetitive knife duels, and there-but-not-there worlds, the nostalgia wears thin when mechanics don’t evolve. I understand going back to the roots, but games still need to evolve and unfortunately The Old Country plays mostly on nostalgia. if you want to close your eyes and step into a moody, beautifully staged Sicilian crime saga, this is it. Just don’t be surprised if once the credits roll, you’re left craving more depth, more unpredictability, and maybe a little more life outside the script.

Mafia: The Old Country is a cinematic and atmospheric journey into the heart of the Sicilian mafia. But behind its beautiful façade lies outdated, uninspired gameplay that leaves much of its potential untapped.

While it certainly falters in its gameplay department, I'll always stick around for a classic mafia story, even if I can see the ending from a mile away.

Mafia: The Old Country drastically improves on its predecessor, delivering a gripping mob tale that hits harder than a punch from Tony Montana. It’s just a shame that it’s a much better movie than it is a game.

Mafia: The Old Country doesn’t have enough gameplay ideas to carry its relatively short running time. While the fundamentals here are fine, an overemphasis on insta-fail stealth sequences and floaty shootouts makes for a forgettable campaign, even if it takes place within a stunningly detailed world. The performances are extraordinary but the story itself is predictable, leaving you with a phenomenally acted crime tale that you may admire in the moment but will struggle to remember once the credits roll.

Mafia: The Old Country is competently made, beautiful, but unambitious in its structure – it’s an offer you can comfortably refuse.
