    Here we go again. Madden NFL 23 is back, and just as poor as usual. Latency filled menus, poor graphics, same crappy canned awkward animations. Same crappy character creation pictures, with the same on field issues as usual. Sliders don't work, jersey animations are horrible, and they were so lazy that they didn't even properly animate the jersey untucked! They just added a strangeHere we go again.     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Purchased the Ultimate Edition. So disappointed. Constant issues and numerous bugs remain. I will pick a play and the game decides to choose a random different play. Apparently the LB’s have 63 inch verticals because they are picking off everything. Core gameplay is bad, the commentary is stagnant and boring and the constant push for Ultimate Team/Loot Boxes is just annoying. Trash game.… Expand

    At this point, there are a very few small amount of core madden players who enjoy this game. Player Models look nice but the gameplay is so entirely slow and everyone feels like they are running in mud. Football is a fast pace game and this is not that at all. Same Juking animations for the past idk 6 years that are SLOW. Certain bugs have been fixed great but the gameplay is just soAt this point, there are a very few small amount of core madden players who enjoy this game. Player Models look nice but the gameplay is so entirely slow and everyone feels like they are running in mud. Football is a fast pace game and this is not that at all.     It's a sad day again for simulation football fans. Gone are the days of innovation and originality. Bringing back a few options that was cut from older Madden games is not going to hide the fact that EA doesn't care about the NFL brand that the have a monopoly on. We deserve better

    As usual another copy paste with some minor changes that more or less does nothing to enhance the game. Steelers stadium is still hienz field and was just copy and pasted from last year. Will they tweak and fix things in game, probably. Am I pretty disappointed this year as for the first time in a long time I bought into the hype? Yup.

    The new passing system and improved defense is nice but thats pretty much where the good stops. Its been said by multiple former devs for ea that the frostbite engine is a nightmare to work with yet EA is too stingy to shelve out a little extra money to actually put madden on a capable engine. The NFL absolutely HAS to stop renewing this garbage exclusivity simulation license because EAThe new passing system and improved defense is nice but thats pretty much where the good stops. Every player spins like they're an offensive lineman with the ball.PA rollout are basically impossible as the DE will immediately shed the OT as soon as you roll because EA decided that rolling out as a QB is unacceptable and can only be done with a perk assigned to a player in special situations. Tjisnis supposed to be a simulation NFL game and it couldnt feel anymore less than that. MUT is and Hass been a cancer to this game as that's all EA puts their effort into, and unfortunately he NFl continues to allow it. I luckily got this game free from a drawing, but I can honestly say I will never buy another NFL Madden game. Absolute Garbage… Expand

    Same pig, new lipstick. Minor "upgrades" to franchise mode. Yet again all significant time and energy was spent by EA in their MUT microtransactions bullsh1t. Yet another year to stay away. Hopefully enough of you are smart enough to do it for once so REAL changes are done to franchise mode.

    Very buggy game. Lots of glitches in franchise mode, including the same one from last year that corrupts offline saves. My first franchise mode game, both teams wore practice jersey and Qbs wore Red, there was also no sound overlay, just crowd noise. They literally sold this game on it's polish this year because they didn't really add anything. So far... bleh

    To willfully sell a product in which so little effort is taken to demonstrate growth year over    Franchise: The fantasy draft feature/presentation, implemented in Madden 19, has gone untouched through Madden 20, 21, 22, and now 23. I’ve found this to be a microcosm of the lack of effort to not only innovate, but at the absolute least, to iterate on previous installments of the franchise.

    To willfully sell a product in which so little effort is taken to demonstrate growth year over year is truly astounding to me. It used to be that you may pickup on similarities between yearly releases in short spurts as you played the game throughout the year. Nowadays, it is blatantly obvious the degree to which development has become copy paste in favor of maximizing profits for lack of development and innovation in a product sold at full price annually. Not only are the similarities evident, but considerable legacy issues persist without any attempts to remedy or find solutions to resolve them.

    (e.g. Franchise trade logic—stated improvements every year and little to no improvement is demonstrated. Improvement to simulation stats in franchise— they actually find a way to get worse. Added immersion within franchise free agency—unrealistic roster moves make the experience completely inaccurate and introduce a new issue that wasn’t in previous installments. Then, in Madden 24, they will tout how they’ve improved free agency as if they’ve addressed an issue they didn’t just introduce in the previous installment).

    Just a lazy excuse for a full-priced, licensed franchise. EA should be ashamed of the product they’ve produced and the NFL should be embarrassed to continue allowing this company to helm their exclusive simulation license. I hope 2K’s “non-simulation”game introduces a modicum of competition to the monopoly that EA has been granted the right to for decades now, and at the very least forces them to add referees back into their “simulation” experience.    … Expand

    This game removes the fun out of football simulation games. I’ve experienced multiple bugs, from the camera not showing the action, to online leagues simply not being able to resume. Imagine putting time into a league for it to just not load. The gameplay is sluggish, even in “performance mode,” the button presses feel delayed and not as responsive as they should be. The DB’s play like randy moss and always get crazy interceptions and they literally didn’t do anything with franchise mode at all. EA promised to put more effort into franchise and it’s clear they’ve lied. Can't call timeout can't pause game. Just have to be forced to waste a play. Graphics look the same as they did in the PS3 era...some of the models are TERRIBKE.     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I guess it’s a 1 because it is a game technically. Game is basically unplayable. It’s bug ridden with animations going to T poses, buildings appearing on the field, players running the ball bouncing on their head for TD. There are logos and assets on the field from 2017. AI still make ridiculous interceptions with DBs playing like cyborgs with insane speed boosts and crazy jumps. The ball arc is still way too low resulting in interceptions. The O-Line is broken allowing edge rushers and linebackers free run into the Backfield with no resistance. Game is still animation based opposed to physics based and still uses the ancient Frostbite engine with virtually no upgrades.

    Franchise mode continues to be neglected and broken. EA only cares about MUT, simulates gambling and micro transactions. The most polished madden ever is a copy paste of 22 with two or three new (old) features that have been resurrected poorly from previous versions.    … Expand

It needs a real overhaul, which includes an actual relocation/expansion option, that isn’t the same copy and paste version that we’ve been given for who knows how many years now. EA Sport’s NHL franchise has at least aAs someone who only plays Franchise mode in Madden, it’s more of the same. The new aspects of franchise aren’t enough to change the fact that franchise mode feels stale. It needs a real overhaul, which includes an actual relocation/expansion option, that isn’t the same copy and paste version that we’ve been given for who knows how many years now. This is still not a good game, it's not fun. The blocking is so bad, and has been for years. Lack of situational IQ for individual players.     It feels like a gutted game with very limited options. You can't even see the details on players during trade proposals in franchise. Relocation process is incredibly tedious and limited. I want to like it but this is an empty husk.

    How come after all these years making all sorts of games, billion dollar company, and they still let into the public a bug that deletes your whole progress in player career mode, because it automatically switches your position from whichever to QB.     Not a simulation football game, an arcade, cheap cash grab. Blockers have 0 awareness of their assignments on the field, corners are either psychic or oblivious and everything in the game being a canned animation gets old really fast.

    Seriously, the intro makes you think this is some sort of homage to the man himself. More like disgrace.

    Look, if you are an actual fan of this franchise, ask yourself if buying the same **** every year is helping the franchise.

    I swear they never play test the game, if you go into Face of Franchise mode as CB you will realize most of the goals in-game for you to earn XP are null, you can meet those requirements but nothing will happen. The only explanation I can conjure up is that the goals such as "hold the    I only bought this game for the sake of doing trophies. For the sake of your money, DO NOT BUY IT.

    I swear they never play test the game, if you go into Face of Franchise mode as CB you will realize most of the goals in-game for you to earn XP are null, you can meet those requirements but nothing will happen. The only explanation I can conjure up is that the goals such as "hold the opponent to 60 rushing yards" actually mean your opponent needs to get to 60 yards because I earned it when my opponent had 100 rushing yards. You can tell they never play test it because I can report up to 20 errors in the Face of Franchise mode in 5 hours of playing.

    And let's not talk about how the Franchise mode basically a copy and paste from Madden 17, but more glitchy with interface for some reason?

    There are also tons of funny visual glitches, here's the most consistent one you can trigger: if you go to the training, you will see 7 identical white dude coaches holding up the clipboard in the cut scene.

    I'm guessing the developers of EA outsource these "new" modes' coding to the cheapest labor possible and never bothered to play test them out; the quality of the game really translates the effort they have put in. It really makes you wonder what they have been doing all day for the last year.    … Expand

    It's a $60-$70 roster update, depending upon your console of choice. For no reason at all, PC does NOT get the next gen update, once again. The animations are still bad. Franchise mode is still terrible. "A step in the right direction" means nothing when you are at the bottom. It is a shame what EA has done to the name of the great John Madden. Same trash as last year.

    You never will. Do this... Go into MUT H2h and set it to friends only. You will see that you AND your friends all win between 45 and 63 winning percentage. That's to encourage you to buy those packs then you wonder why all your reliable cards begin to play like garbage as the new card you just upgraded to is absolutely on fire. After a month the new card is trash. Time to upgrade again. In fact you spend money and get cards, do quicksell for training which is a currency that you can't buy in cash but obviously you spent money in some way to get those training points. Also the same with certain holiday promotions. To make one player you have to buy his whole collection of cards. It all adds up but in EAs bank account.    … Expand

    Madden doesn’t care about producing a good football game. They just know that everyone is going to buy their new game for the roster update. I gave in this year but never again! The NFL needs to terminate their exclusive contract with EA. Without competition this will continue

    Forced animations that make you throw an interception. Quarterbacks who constantly fumble if you don't slide. Linemen who seemingly disappear and you get sacked LITERALLY 0.5 seconds after snapping the ball. When you switch to the receiver, you are slowed down, and this usually ends in a forced interception. 99 speed RB    Since this is the same game every year, I'll write the same review.

Running teams win because your o-line refuses to block, receivers will not get separation, and db’s read, jump, and intercept like any ball thrown. Can’t say I enjoy the enhancements to this game because of the other issues.     It is now may and I decided to see if any of the updates have made this game better. They nerfed man coverage into the ground so you cannot run it. The db’s still have 10x better hands than any receiver. The offensive line play is awful. Every down feels scripted whether or not a player on your line just whiffs not matter how good they are or how bad the defender is. I’ve seen the same terrible dt break a double team animation for the last like 5 years and it still makes me mad everytime I see it. Overall this game was an absolute waste of money and time. EA really needs to lose the license and stop making these games. But, idiots in the nut community make the game still profitable for them so it will never happen. Next year will be the first year in well over a decade (2005) that I do not purchase this game.

    In true EA fashion, all they have done is a roster update and 1 fancy new mechanic. The same they do every year only this time it seems as though they took a backward step on visuals. So many players are appearing fatter with guts this year, the look of Jersey fits and shoulder pads are odd and make you question if you're playing a next generation console game.

    To it's credit I felt the passing leads work well and made you have a real sense of control when trying to fit balls in tight spaces. This should have been in the game a long time ago though.

    EA continues to hand out subpar games because they have no competition and they know NFL fans will just buy it anyway. What the fans need is for the NFL to do right by them and open this up to other developers like 2k who actually know how to make games.     Can we have just 1 sports game in 2022 that isn't almost 100% focused on fake team, card modes? Gotta make that $ from kiddie gambling though.

Blocking in this game is fundamental but apparently not when it comes to Madden as you have about 1.5 seconds to throw the football on a shotgun play even with a good offensive line. Players are stingy and want big contracts even if they are 72 overall and haven't played well. I was really hoping this year would be different but it's not so I'm done I'll just go to 2k for my sports games because EA doesn't know how to make one apparently… Expand

Physics based my a**, I may have gotten straight C’s in John Robbins physics class but I think I know who’s winning between Cameron Heyward, and Ronald Jones in a “tackle battle.” But nope. Ronald Jones can shove off one of the strongest dudes in the league like he’s nothing. Not only is the gameplay bad but the graphics are terrible. This is a PS5 game made by a AAA company and the biggest Video Game manufacturer in the world but the jerseys look like plastic bags.

    Also side note. How in the blue bell does Carson Strong have a face scan and not Kenny Pickett??? Franchise mode. Literally nothing changed… again. I’ve said in chat and in convos in general way too many times how I feel about franchise mode. Madden 23……

Just replay any situation where a RB passes its o-line and gets to the next level and you will see, that 90% of the meaningful impacts between players look scripted.

    But at this point, even reviews are meaningless, since the NFL just doesn't care and the only glimpse of hope would be to end the EA monopoly and finally give other companies the chance to create a game, where fans can seriously get involved and create their own stuff. These creation aspects are essential for true immersion.

    But no one of the NFL or EA will read this anyway. And the MUT-lovers will carry this product once more.

    Hopefully none of the decision makers behind Madden will be involved in the development of EA College Football in 2023. But lets be real folks, this is EA and this game just isn't about you fans, it's about your money.    … Expand

And who doesn't love the coverage plays when the center of the zone has more gravity than Earth, because why else would my MLB just stand there while the play develops 3 yards from them. That's not simulation, that's feeding the user the win because EA looks down on their userbase condescendingly. Franchise is still broken, probably moreso than usual. For some reason, young talent hits free agency. I don't know if it's a bug with the motivation system or purely due to incompetent GM AI...probably the latter. I read EA wants players word of mouth to sell this game.. got bad news for them, i think as people play this game more over the next few days they will not like it. This is the first year i started a trial instead of blindly buying it and im happy i did that... I don't plan to purchase this year.. will wait for game pass and play madden 22 and get to use college teams in superstar KO mode.. Face of the franchise is still contrived and boring and not worth playing BTW.. penalties are NEVER called even set at 99!… Expand

    I really wanted this version of the game to redeem my faith in what EA are creating. But I am so disappointed with this years version. I have been buying Madden since 05, but I feel that now its time to step away from the franchise. Its the same as Madden 21/22 but with a new roster. The game feels like its on rails and is the furthest thing from a football simulation. This is the lastI really wanted this version of the game to redeem my faith in what EA are creating.     I don’t understand how “professional critics” continue to rate the game decently especially when you compare madden to other sports games like NBA2k and MLB the Show. The standards need to be much higher and right now Maddens franchise mode wouldn’t be acceptable for the PS2 generation much less the PS5. NBA 2k is about to give us MyEra which gives us the ability to start a franchise from 3 different eras in the 80s, 90s and 2000s each with UNIQUE presentations to those eras and representative of those eras style of play and contracts. Compare that to Madden Franchise mode which doesn’t have realistic contracts, doesn’t have restricted FA, doesn’t have compensatory draft picks, has horrible CPU logic such as letting a franchise QB enter free agency without receiving franchise tag. Like they don’t even get the BASICS of how the real NFL is run much less give us deep features. Presentation is awful compared to what some other sports games give us. And gameplay, while improved, is still run on an animation based system and still features terrible CPU logic and predetermined play outcomes based on how an animation is playing out. How is this considered acceptable when we SEE what other sports games give us. WHY are we letting madden off the hook??? The only thing EA is good at is marketing because they somehow convince people to buy this trash every year and convince people it’s the best that can be done with a football game. I wish people would see the light on this but sadly they won’t. I’ve stopped buying this trash as much as I love football and want to play a football game but what good is it if I’m disappointed every time I play the game?… Expand

    there were some cool things added but the game is borderline unplayable. defenses pick EVERYTHING off, fumbles relentlessly, WR's not playing the ball. OL men standing watching people run by them. It s the same broken piece of garbage. I really bought into the hype this year with the the 'focus on franchise' and 'most polished version in recent years' but ffs this is the last straw.     The generational change hasn’t been felt since PS4, and the PS5 jump is marginal. It’s still awkwardly presented, quirky with glitches, and fighting between simulation and arcade play. Madden 23 never feels comfortable in its own skin, but hopefully Coach, wherever he is, can take solace in what his legacy built. [Issue#20, p.88]

    Madden NFL 23 is another incremental update in a franchise known for putting out incremental updates. Updated rosters, a few minor additions to existing game modes, and a couple of gameplay tweaks – you know the drill. The presentation is still thoroughly dull and even the soundtrack feels tired. The gameplay engine is in need of more than an incremental update, though. The “if it’s in the game, it’s in the game” game still feels more like you’re playing a Madden game than a simulation of an NFL game. With the passing of its namesake, perhaps it’s finally time to build a new game, one that NFL fans can really get excited about.
