This game is very underrated. Sure it borrowed visual and game mechanics from Breath of the Wild but people should also know that this game is quite a gem to play. The graphic's AMAZING, music's FANTASTIC and the gameplay's ADDICTIVE! This is clearly one of my top 3 games this year. A must play!

Divertido demais!

I would give this game a 9, but I add a +1 to counter the Zeros: really? 0? "Thiz gam' bad, reel ba'd, kanot know why, 2 fwe w'rds in me mind, gah boo boo boo".

    NOTHING is worth 0.

The only thing that doesn't make Immortals a 10 is that the open world is too busy: I prefer open worlds with a bigger breather between places, icons or missions. More space to sink in the beauty and atmosphere, which is aplenty here!!

The game design is top notch, controls are great and the camera is almost flawless. Numerous skill options are available early the game and then you can quickly start to upgrade to your liking.

Yes, it’s very inspired by Breath of the Wild, but that’s an amazing inspiration to start from! Aaaand, BoTW didn't invent the open world genre, or the climbing mechanic etc. Other games contributed to the inspiration behind this particular Zelda game, including the very noteworthy Shadow of the Colossus. Immortals does its own thing in its own ways. I hope for more titles like this from Ubisoft Quebec. A Viking Immortals would be fabulous! So MUCH can be done from this starting point.

Graphics are beautiful, music is enticing and well used. I personally love the humor: I didn’t think I would with my initial exposure to it from the 1st cinematic, but it gets better and then, later on, it’s not too intrusive and fits well in the overall package. In fact, the narrators and characters become part of the story and it wouldn’t be the same without them. Maybe you need to be young at heart to find it funny, who knows? Just don’t take the game too seriously and you will have fun!

    It’s a great experience of a game :D

Immortals Fenyx Rising is hands down the most pure, joyful FUN I have had with a video game in 2020, and maybe 2019 as well. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve played some great games in that span—some with tighter combat mechanics or a better story or deeper characters—but none that was more fun.

It’s Breath of the Wild meets Greek myth with an Aesthetic inspired by Studio Gibli and emotional undertones of an animated Disney film. The game is absolutely gorgeous. This is the kind of game where you want to walk/fly around just to feast your eyes. The music is, for the most part, pretty great too. It’s a joy just to be in this world, full monsters and myths and challenges and puzzles (so many puzzles—seriously, this game is a real puzzler). And after the prologue, it’s fully open, meaning you can play any way you want to. If you love the arrow challenges and fresco puzzles but hate the constellation puzzles, you can usually do what you like and skip what you don’t. What the world lacks up in size it makes up in density: around just about every corner is puzzle hiding some kind of reward, and you can engage that puzzle or not, for as long as you want. Or you can just go fight some monsters, or climb a mountain, fight an optional boss, collect power-up items and gear to strengthen your character, learn new godly powers… and maybe at some point proceed with the story.

The story is not the game’s strong point, and I don’t think it’s meant to be. After the prologue, I played for about 20 hours just exploring and having fun before I finally got back to the next main story quest. And I took lots of breaks from the main story after that too. I can’t help but feel that the game is meant to be paced this way. I played 70 hours total and finished with dozens of vaults and challenges still left incomplete. If you’re just rushing through the main story, you’re missing the game, IMHO.

Not that the main story is bad, exactly: Typhon, a Titan, is trying to take down the Greek Gods and you, the unlikely hero Fenyx, need to help restore some of them to power. It’s all kind of goofy and silly, sometimes genuinely funny, sometimes kind of cringey. The Gods themselves are larger than life, often oafish, and the game really emphasizes the way they all function as an extremely dysfunctional family. Fenyx, meanwhile, has a heart of gold. The occasional moment of mean-spirited humor aside, the story overall has the kind of relentless emotional earnestness that makes Disney movies a household name. Immortals Fenyx Rising lite fare as stories and characters go … but lite fare enables the overall tone of light-heartedness that pervades the game and adds to its joy.

There was only one big letdown for me, and that was the game’s final five hours or so. The game teases you with what looks like a giant mountain area that you can’t access until later on. Because the rest of the game was constituted by such excellent open world design, it’s easy to assume this final area will be a similar garden of treasures. Not so. It turns out the final area is a linear path with only one “right” way to go, and several mandatory puzzles. It has secrets and off-shoots along the way, but at the end of the day, there is only one way to climb that mountain. This marks a radical shift in game design that feels like a betrayal of everything that came before. Slogging up that mountain was not super-fun, and made the final vault, with its final round of mandatory puzzles, feel like more of a grind than it would have otherwise.

But the frustration of the linear endgame ultimately was not enough to tarnish the joy that this game brought me. I LOVED Immortals Fenyx Rising. Getting to sink into this world for a week after all the hardships of 2020 seriously felt like therapy for me. Like, I’m a better, happier person because of this game. And that is not something I say often. Thank you, Ubisoft, for giving us this gem.

In it, you explore The Golden Isle, a deceptively large island absolutely jam packed with intricate puzzles and mythological creatures such as the Cyclops, Cerberus and Medusa. You take part in a story, creatively narrated throughout by Zeus and Prometheus, of a hero that sets out to save their brother and restore everyone who has been turned to stone.

The way the story is told may not be for everyone and some people might find it on the nose or cringey but it had me laughing throughout. The depictions of Gods are generally pretty funny, from Ares (the God of War) being a clucking chicken, to Zeus complaining about you doing sidequests when you should be focussing on him, even going so far as to trying to roll the credits when you finish the prologue. There's also this prevailing sense that throughout the story you have literally no control on where it will end up with things changing right in front of you depending on what Zeus and Prometheus are talking about at the time. And there are constant reminders that Prometheus and ultimately the writer controls what you do. The ending is a little messy and feels a little unsatisfying but doesn't stop the story from being one of the more fun stories I've played in a while. There is genuine heart in this story and it's evident that the creators put a tonne of effort into making the story engaging and full of different layers.

The gameplay is also incredibly fun. i started out mainly using the axe to stun enemies and beat them down slowly, but as I unlocked more Godly Powers that changed, so much so that in the final boss fight i was constantly in the air chaining sword, arrow, axe and bird combos together and feeling like a badass doing it.

The other major part of this game is the exploration; every corner of the map is filled with unique puzzles, each of which tell some sort of story through either the visuals or the task that you have to do. Whilst none of the puzzles are particularly challenging because they are so well designed, they do require you to think and assess the area. Traversal of the map is fun and while it looks like it might be similar to Zelda BOTW it doesn't feel really feel like that at all. By the end of the game which took me about 42 hours, I was left wanting more and immediately purchased the season pass which by the looks of it has 3 massive DLCs that I can't wait for.

Overall, the worst thing about Immortals: Fenyx Rising is that it was released a week before Cyberpunk and because of this a lot of people might miss it. I highly recommend you pick up this game!

I’ve been playing the AC series since the beginning and this game has better combat than any of them. I have played Breath of the Wild and while I enjoyed it, there was almost too much to it. By comparison, this game is more focused and is more navigable than BOTW in my opinion.

Again, I will be biased with my love for Greek mythos, but I find the story entertaining and lighthearted, which I prefer in games (I prefer good gameplay over serious stories, it’s a game after all). Plus I love the banter between Prometheus and Zeus.

If you are a fan of exploitable open worlds with a lot to do and fantastic gameplay you will enjoy. This is the most enjoyable game I have played this year. You will not regret buying it and I really hope there is a sequel.

It is very hard to avoid comparing Immortals to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Despite obvious inspirations it is a typical Ubi-game with all its pros and cons, an inventory screen copied almost exactly from Assassin’s Creed, and a store with premium items. Anyhow, it’s Ubisoft’s most interesting game in years, definitely worth checking out for its satisfying exploration accompanied by simple combat and tons of good puzzles. [01/2021, p.62]

Ubisoft's open-world titles can invoke burnout towards their conclusion - crumbling under their own weight due to their size. Instead, this is a real palette cleanser. It feels like it hits that real sweet spot in the genre of the open-world adventure games. The world is large but enjoyable to explore, with just enough to do, and the constant commentary keeping things interesting. This combined with the genuinely funny and smart writing results in something that will be the big surprise hit for many.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Breath of the Wild set the bar for the genre, and since Link never got around to visiting Ancient Greece – there’s no shame in sending Fenyx there instead. [Issue#251, p.56]
