I was a huge fan of the first game, but the "studio-produced" games have made me quite salty over the past few years. There's this bizarre theme of game trailers looking way better than the games ever do during their pre-releases. There's this bizarre theme of game trailers looking way better than the games ever do during their pre-releases. So, I was quite skeptical of how this game would be when compared to their hype trailers and having to live up to the last game. Regardless, I'm quite impressed. The game looks beautiful, the story stays consistent with the old game (one of my favorite things about it), and the machines are still great. It's like I'm playing in the eco-aware version of ZOIDS. I really enjoyed the game, the story, the graphics, and all the new side-quest things they added in. With that being said, I do have two things that kind of irked me. First, the combat seems to be a little less fluid than the first game. It really seems like some of the combat moves (especially melee) are forcibly clicked/animated into place, which is different than the first game. It looks like Aloy is teleporting to a machine/raider to make my hit be a hit. I'd rather miss and not have this skipping (it can be a little disorienting). This could be a way to save on framerates or rendering, or whatever, but the close combat does feel a bit more choppy. Second, as much as I love the bigger and more flashy new map, it seems like Guerilla was just pasting things into the places between quest objectives to give me something to do. I do like the new additions and the new map, but there is a point where you have so many things on your map that it kind of becomes overwhelming. There were times where it felt like I was playing a Ubisoft game. These two points aside, they did not detract from my experience of enjoying the game. It still looks great and it's still very stimulating in, almost, every aspect. Love the new machines, love the continuation of the storyline, and I did enjoy how Guerilla spiced-up some of the character development. I had a great time playing it. I hope they're working an expansion because The Frozen Wilds was a fun addition to the last game. Expand

Graphics are the best I've ever seen on console. Amazing story and openworld game play. Will easily go down as a potential game of the year.

Great graphics, great bugs. I spent some time laughing with the game. I just started playing and right on the start screen only Aloy appeared floating

This is one of the prettiest games I have seen, and it's the most interesting world design in ages. Perfect? Nope, but the bits I have had issues with have been minor thus far and I am absolutely invested.

I am primarily doing this in response to the inappropriate review bombing by bad actors and those who fail to understand the purpose of review aggregate sites like this. Horizon Forbidden West is a superb game that has clearly suffered through the pandemic. It is by no means perfect but any review under a 6 is clearly just bad faith drivel. This is not going to be written like a proper review but rather, a series of impressions I've had after about 25 hours and completion of about 50% of the game. First: the positive.

Environments - Environments in this game have been expanded and improved over the first game in ways that will be immediately apparent. Vast open plains, barren deserts, white sandy coastlines that seem to stretch on forever, all decorated with far more reactive foliage than anything the first game could produce. The biomes in the first game all largely felt the same. That is simply not the case in Forbidden West. Machine Diversity - Zero Dawn offered up an impressive array of machines to hunt and was rightly lauded for its encounter diversity. That same bestiary has returned along with a variety of new machines that are equally well-designed and fun to fight. While there are some species of machine that quickly wear out their welcome, the vast majority of encounters are tense and satisfying. Taking a leaf out of Monster Hunter's book, Forbidden West boasts over 40 monster machines and nearly all of them can easily destroy a player who isn't careful and look damn good doing it. Side Quests and Collectibles - I got the platinum trophy for HZD. Doing so took about 3 days. In that time, I managed to complete the greater majority of side quests and found a good number of the collectibles. I, therefore, feel I have good standing to make the claim that the side content in HFW is much improved over its predecessor. The side quest holders manage to be more fleshed out while offering far more interesting tasks for the player to complete. The collectibles are mildly improved over the first game's offerings, especially the drone collectibles that I won't spoil here, but they are generally the same standard fair found in other open world titles. Still, the side quests more than make up for a lack of interesting things to mindlessly pick up. Character models - Improved in nearly every way. Facial animations, fluid movements, level of detail. All has been touched up and made to look truly next Gen. Characters in the first game, especially those who weren't relevant to the main questline, has an almost plastic appearance to them. Models in Forbidden West look near universally amazing, so much so that it makes one question why more effort wasn't applied in the first game to make models look as good. Now for some negatives:

Story - Do not listen to the trolls who say this is the absolute worst story they have ever experienced. That is unfair and obviously stated in bad faith. What is fair to say, though, is that this story is not as strong as that found in Zero Dawn. Aloy's journey from humble outcast to hero of the Nora is a reiteration of the same classic hero stories people have loved since the time of the ancient Greeks. Through her struggles, she learned the necessity of relying on others to accomplish great things and overcome insurmountable obstacles. That lesson was immediately forgotten in Forbidden West. It's actually quite the disconnect that Aloy begins the story trying to shoulder her burdens alone after going through the trouble of realizing how stupid that is in her first adventure. Beyond that though, the story focuses more on the Sci-fi elements of the game and less on the personal journeys of Aloy and her allies and is ultimately weaker and crazier for it (though this is partially fixed for those who engage in the side quests). Bugs - Technical polish (or the lack thereof) is likely the area that this game falls the flattest. In 60 hours of playing HZD, I do not recall any major rendering or game play bugs. In 25 hours of HFW, I have encountered numerous issues. While there haven't been any hard crashes, I've had to reload the game a number of times to redo quests after objectives bugged out (not a terrible issue due to the games generous autosave system) . This, combined with multiple black screen flickers has resulted in a noticeably affected experience. It's not a deal breaker and one could definitely point to the pandemic as the reason but it's definitely something any player is likely to be affected by. Bottom line - My subjective score for this game is an 8 but the OBJECTIVE score for HFW is no less than 6. People calling this game ugly, inferior to HZD, or a complete failure are clearly just acting in bad faith to bash the game. They say they aren't trolls. They definitely are trolls. Guerilla put out top notch work while rejecting crunch *applause*.

It has bugs, very annoying ones, you drop randomly under map, things not loading in, etc. It's not Cyberpunk level bad, but that doesn't mean that it's not bad. It is bad. But that's not even biggest issue of this game. The best biggest issue is really lazy and boring writing, story awful. I was really waiting for this game and this level of story telling in 2022 is just bad. Collapse Expand

Overall not a horrible game, but buggy. A bit uninspiring and unimpressive in story. Takes a bit for the world to open up, which melts away excitement at the onset. Graphically challenged. Over sharpening is prevalent, which gives textures an off putting look. Performance mode looks just awful on a 4k monitor, and resolution mode is obviously dynamic and balance is lost in heavier loads and detail takes a hit.

A few issues such as moving grass tiles due to weird loading patterns. Atleast 2 spots where you can fall through the ground (that I know of). Poor collision physics with certain items and vegetation. Odd distortion in some NPCs. Pop in of large objects like buildings that seem to magically appear out of thin air. Aloy’s eyes tend to go rogue, looking everywhere but the intended direction and at times roll into the back of her head. Character movement of expression is wonky in dialogue scenes. Game can encounter several types of crashes, some requiring a game reboot, with others completely disabling your PS5 all together and requiring troubleshooting or a hard reset.

Had to stop playing, as the experience was not enjoyable, immersion is broken, and bugs concern me that it could potentially brick my hardware.

This is probably the best open world i've ever played its just beautifull the beaches and jungles are absolutely gorgeous. The story is okey but it is still good you really have to understand everything from the last game. It has some glitches and bugs but i trust the devs that they will fix those small issues. Horizon Forbidden West is Guerrilla's best game to date, taking Aloy to new heights with a blockbuster release that meets the high standards set by PlayStation in recent years. While it's totally worth fans jumping in on day one, it's perhaps better to wait a few weeks until all the bugs are ironed out.

Horizon Forbidden West is exactly what everyone thought it would be: an amazing game. It has an open world with plenty of things to do and places to explore, fights against some really well-developed machines and stunning visuals. The feeling is that the second game of the series improves on what was already great, and it feels rewarding and fun to play. It is another single-player masterpiece from Sony.
