Great graphics and great fighting mechs, thats it. Horrible story, over the top bad guys, laughtble writing. Bloated weapons wheel, too many repeated types of arrows. Unbalenced weapons and equipment upgreads, you can visit many cities that sells horrible new ones, only used 2 diferent armors during all game.

Doesnt feel epic like tlou or uncharted.

Horizon Forbidden West feels as though they've massively improved on their 5 year old counterpart (Zero Dawn) in the combat department... I think with the 60fps feature the combat feels a lot more smooth and natural, making it easier to dodge and hit vital components.

My main issue with the game so far is that being 11 hours in I've only lightly scratched the surface, unlocking about 1/5 of the map and have a long way to go... according to howlongtobeat it roughly takes about 43 hours for main story and extras, now depending on what that means I feel being someone who will want to complete all side quests and main quests, I may fall under the 40-50 hour bracket, which I feel is going to be far too long for me personally considering I'm only really near the beginning and I'm already not invested in any of the characters or the main plot.

I've also encountered numerous game breaking bugs such as, Aloy being stuck between a rock and a step, the mount just continuously running in one spot, and Aloy throwing attacks rapidly but not landing them.... I've also had immersion breaking bugs such as, floating corpses, floating objects, mount being stuck in background during dialogue cut-scenes...

Gameplay wise I am having fun despite the bugs, but you could literally replace the characters with completely different characters and a completely different story and I wouldn't even notice or be bothered as none of those two aspects are interesting me at all... It's literally a carbon of Zero Dawn with a few improvements, but with a less interesting Story, and characters you either forgot or care little about.

I'm a bit disheartened paying £70 for this game, I think if you can pick it up for £45-50 then go for it, but it doesn't justify the new gen price bump, and I normally let off reviewing games until I complete them but because the game hasn't really offered much in 11 hours, and has already become a bit tedious, I don't really need to complete it to formulate an opinion.

The game starts well but ends up getting boring, the story is not well told. The antagonists have disappointed me a lot, they promised a lot. I loved the first part and that's why I bought the second part with enthusiasm, quite disappointing.

    This game is:

    - forced diversity - "white men bad" - amazing graphics, top of the line - kind of basic story: "defeat the bad guys" If you love lots of side quests, you might like this game. For me, I did not really feel too much for any of the new characters tbh. The main quest is in essence very basic, and the execution of it is very "cinematic". Both games are kind of woke,

Gameplay is still uninteresting, almost stupid, despite the new weapons. No matter what animal you're fighting, just keep dodging, shoot, dodge, shoot, dodge, shoot, dodge, shoot, dodge, shoot, dodge, shoot......and.....pick up another annoying loot nearby. And again, dodge, shoot, dodge, shoot, dodge, shoot...

In the end, it does a lot of things that are cool and impressive. But it's the game, never the game design, being impressive. You'll feel dumb and clumsy. Good game design lets you feel clever (when earned). This game just wants to shout "Hit it with Acid" and "I should look over here".

Instead, your agency will be spent trying to find the machine part you swore you knocked off during the fight--about as much fun as searching for a misplaced wallet or keys.

This game is good in a bunch of aspects, killing different machines is still interesting as it was in Zero Dawn.Lore is pretty much the same, the whole gameplay is pretty much the same, but there more skill trees and more machines to fight.Because of that I want to focus on more specific elements of the game.

Story - comparing with the first part of Horizon, it is worse in story conception, but the whole direction of cutscenes is far more better. The thing that irritated me the most is ending. As I recall the ending of first not that cliffhanger as it is in Forbidden West.Because in the end this game shows you new external threat to the world and characters discover that and then… credits. In that moment I was like: And that is how the game ended?! seriously I think that the biggest minus in this game is ending. But in other aspects story is not bad nor good.
-The Open World.I’m getting sick of the open world games in a while, but because of the beauty and some creative missions in this game I’ve gotta admit that this world is awfully good.It interesting to explore and find Relic Ruins (To solve platforming puzzle and discover the history of the location ), also Tallnecks are I the game ( as I name them - The most interesting Ubisoft-like towers to undercover the map ), Covers are also very good in their presentation and it provides interesting way to complete them, and so on.
-Mistakes from the previous game improved in this game- Facial animation is became Naughty Dog-Like if I may say so myself ;) , and dialogues became far more dynamic comparing with the first game.
-Also there’s a lot of memorable sequences in the game. For me it is- Las Vegas (no spoilers here every player must experience by him/herself), "First Flight" on machine, Final Boss , Beta appearance, Silences secrets and Hades these moments were really interesting for me.
After completing this game, and getting platinum in it I can recommend this game to those who have competed the first part ( obviously ), and to all PS5 owners. Also game has a really easy platinum, so you can try to obtain it after completing the main storyline.

    Minuses:
A huge amount of grind for upgrades, all-consuming fem agenda, a mechanic with braking off spare parts (for example, you need to break off the tail to death of the car, otherwise the tail will "self-destruct"), although the mechanics can be disabled in the settings. On the latest upgrades of orange things, you need to farm the same creatures over and over again.

A lot of things have been done "do not give a damn". For example, in one of the skyscrapers you need to get into the room to pick up the ornament, but on the side of the room there is a "wall" made of a fence with cells in 2 Aloy, but you cannot get inside. Invisible walls or the inability to climb where an ordinary person could easily do it in 2022 is very annoying. In one of the side quests, the water simply flows from the "switch" for water, I can't call it anything else. Although even the pipes do not go to the "breaker", only the supports on which it holds.

Hook-cat breaks the whole gameplay. It would be possible to catch on "over there", but no, crawl around for a few more minutes. And at the end of the game from the obstacles "first pull here and there, and then climb up" starts to feel sick.

People who, in an ordinary mask, can tank arrows with their heads annoys a lot. Metal vehicles fall apart from the arrows, but people normally tank them (a broken neck says hello), okay. Here you can write off the RPG elements, but it looks bad.

Machine racing (although there are only 4 of them) are annoying because your machine can simply slow down sharply and stop in a small area, because path-finding is very bad and they don’t know how to jump over obstacles. In the same Witcher 3 (2015, let me remind you), the behavior of the horse is much better and more convenient.

Even after a few months from the release, there are some bugs, because of which you have to start from the checkpoint.

Seems like the focus in development was shifted to the fem agenda, rather than the overall quality of the game.

I beat it on hightest difficulty and I would set 7.5 without taking into the fem agenda, 6.5 with it.
And if it's GOTY, then the gaming industry of single-player games is in a big trouble.

Speaking of the combat, it is horrific, highly janky and situational, full of cheap one-hit kills, and you will end up running in circles rolling like a lunatic as you avoid giant machines that will inevitably gangbang you into a stunlock where you can't get away. You can sum up the combat as "run in a circle while dodging and try not to get stunlocked as you take a shot with slo-mo every 5 seconds". Summary: Good game, with poor developing choices

The graphics are beautiful, and the game knows this by showing you the landscape from high ledges more than one time during the main story and side missions. The former is nice and fits well with its predecessor. The maschine designs are cool and the world from zero dawn still appealing. However, this game is simply too long. The dialogues are drawn-out and the side mission are tedious without adding much to the world, since the first part already uncovered most mysteries. There are many unnecessary maschine fights which feel artifical: Its used as an easy and cheap obstacle to many times, even if its just illogical for the maschines to appear at exact that moment in the mission. And it will happen in nearly every mission. The first minigames and collectibles are nice, but they become boring very early.

The gameplay is a bit expanded, but most things are unnecessary, especially if you play on lower difficulty levels. My advice: Play mostly the main story and do side quest only to level up. At the end, you are still free to do all the side quests and will have an easier time doing it because of unlocked mechanics. Although you probably will abandon this game way before you have done everything, if I had to guess.

Nonetheless, I wanted to know what mystery was behind the ending of zero dawn, and therefore played it to a great extent. That being said, I will definitely neither play the anounced/teasered third part of the series nor the DLC.

I really liked the story of the first game, but this one didn't quite engage with me and I'm not very attracted to the future of the main story
In the graphic section, the detail of all the machines, textures, facial animations and everything is tremendous.
But having liked the first game, I don't connect with the franchise, it's okay but I think PS5 has better games than this for my taste

One point off because the save system is just plain old-fashioned. There is no reason to punish players when they die (or have to restart cause of bugs!), but that's exactly how it feels when you get thrown way back because you just forgot to run to the stupid campfires in the flow. This doesn't generate any added value for anyone.

Otherwise, it's again a lot of fun to go off with aloy!

EDIT: again 2 points deducted because of crashes in combination with the idiotic save system and recurring blackscreen bug.

Despite the open world also being largely affected by these issues, its quality is completely subjective, but I do think comparatively it is pretty strong. In essence, it is simply an expansion to Zero Dawn, a safe move by Guerilla Games, one that you can't fault but also have to feel some disappointment in. Expand

Exploring the world feels better than before, and the climbing is something the game definitely needed. There's actually a lot of content and the game is pretty big, there are random minigames you can play, races with machines, an entire arena, and many more things to do.

Unfortunately, despite the few improvements in the Open World, the game feels like a step-back from the first game in almost every other way, sure there are some quality of life improvements, melee combat is way better and the new skill tree is a nice addition, but the core gameplay still feels the exact same for the most part, and the story is such a mess, the pacing is terrible, and the ending is insultingly bad, I did like some of the new story beats but in the end it honestly feels as if the story didn't really progress.

Also the physics and the collision detection are absolutely atrocious, getting hit mid-animation while rolling perfectly to dodge an attack or doing a critical strike and getting interrupted by an enemy is just incredibly annoying.

It's a well made game, and my experience was mostly positive but I expected more after 5 whole years.
At the end of the day I actually liked it, it was a fun experience and I really wanna see how the story is gonna continue from here.

    Final Rating: "Good" ~ 7/10.

There is no possible way that anyone could enjoy this at the same level as the first one, which was an awesome game. It truly seems that the developers wanted to make this game less fun and more of a chore. All those characters you loved from the first one??? Now Aloy engages in tedious character drama nonsense and they hate each other. Drama and emotions don't make something good, you need to actually have a plot. What a disappointment.

On the positive side, the soundtrack is WAY, WAY better and most of the excellent combat from the original entry is maintained or improved.

I was at bulwark and decided to head to a tallneck southwest of there, I got all the way there after an hour with some sidetracking, found a campfire, quick saved, and proceeded to solve the tallneck puzzle for 1 and a half hours. Did my save work? No. I got to where I'm supposed to jump onto the tallneck but it's climbholds decided not to exist and I died, I spawned back in bulwark with no record of my journey. I have spent hefty time playing this game and this is going to be an honest review about it.

First let’s start with the good things about the game:
-The game looks really good. It really showcase how good the next gen games should look.
-Graphics are superb. Character models especially look awesome. -World is also quite huge and it is built superbly well. It has that post human vibe to it which I really liked. -Main missions are good. Side missions sometimes good but not always
-Story is also good. I have liked the concept from Zero Dawn and this also carries it well.
-Gameplay is some what good, but has lots of issues

    Now the bad
This is going to be a long list.
-Bugs. This is probably the first thing that as a gamer I don’t appreciate in a big title like this. Bugs are too frequent especially while transversal. In combat sometimes you are not able to wield weapon. It hasn’t happened often but couple of times. You can stuck in rocks or bushes or any other thing and getting out of it becomes super hard.
-Getting around the world is another issue. See the open world game needs a robust system that favours exploration. However, in this game it is not that good. First there is no stable thing that you can ride and go along. If your mounting machine is destroyed you literally have to search for another override it and then take it back to the same location where you first left. This is really frustrating.
-Now the biggest issue. Combat. Dude the melee system is the worst combat I have seen in any open world game. The moves are super basic. Even after unlocking many new moves it still didn’t feel right. Ranged weapons are good but again enemies are so aggressive that it is almost impossible to find a perfect spot to use ranged weapons. The machine will jump over you while aiming and the whole point of ranging weapons is gone. Stealth has same issues. -Difficulty unbalanced. I have no problem with difficult games. Being a Souls games lover I enjoy difficulty, but in this game it is unbalanced. As I explained the enemies can cover huge distance in one jump which makes ranging and melee moves insignificant.
-Too many dialogues. I think when games focus too much on explaining each and everything it breaks the bridge between player and game. Most of the time I am just waiting to finish the dialogue. It really made me skip most of the dialogues entirely. -Upgrading system is little complex because it offer variety of things. It may be good but often you can get away with any upgrades at all. There is no special reward or satisfaction that you get from upgrading. Final verdict So, is this a good game? I will say yes, because I still enjoy it playing just like any other open world game. This game has some basic issues which I hope were not there.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Played this for 30 hours, didn't finish yet. I will, but so far it was a mediocre experience. Playing on Hard Difficulty, via the Custom Setting.

The whole experience feels gated. After finishing the tutorial, I started exploring ASAP, The first three landmarks I explored revealed blocked paths (two on the map, one in a sidequest). Two of those opened up after I finished a Level 24 Quest, for the other one I have yet to find a solution. Talk about demotivating your customer. Leaving the Nora Heartlands in Part One, you could go where you want, doing what you want, your path and exploration only blocked by story- relevant sites. Forbidden West keeps up with the gating. You can only travel most of the map after visiting the first and second areas, and exploration- related abilities are gated behind story missions.

I encountered tons of bugs, mostly graphics- wise. Non story- NPCs clipping through story relevant- characters in cutscenes (enountered in the first village), Bugging AI's in larger machines, rendering them totally passive. Disappearing machine bodies of flying machines after I killed them while airborne, because the game couldn't decide where to place the body. Worst are control related issues, I suffered random cases of stick drift while aiming at machines from slopes or uneven terrain. My controller works fine, tested in copies of other games, and problems persists even after resetting bluetooth and controller software.

The last factor makes sniping unbearably difficult in crucial situations, like severing body parts of machines with quest related rewards in it, that would otherwise disintegrate when killing the machine. I solved this issue partially by setting my difficulty to "Custom" and enabling "Easy Loot", which reduces the grindiness of the game by a lot. Btw way, loot, if you want to upgrade, expect a lot of grinding, This game wanrts to be at least Monster Hunter in a light form. Also here, gating or bugs. I got that one legendary armor I want to upgrade. I am looking for a machine site. Can't find it. Use Youtube. Still can't find despite guides with maps. Seems like that machine site spawns only after I have progressed far enough in the story. Just for protocol, I beat that machine in the tutorial as a boss.

You will be picking up stuff. A lot. This is forced upon you by a mediocre inventory managment system. Your main source of healing are berries, a full heal takes as much as 4 of them, you pick them up in single batches. Your pouches are limited. Everything you pick up exceeding your pouch capacity will be magically teleported to your stash. It doesn't feel like a quality of life- improvement, but yet another wall you have to juggle while playing.

The skill system is blooated, there are several skill trees, unlocking passives, active abilities (that you can only use with certain types of weapons, related to the tree), and acitve "Valor" Skills. You can have a dozen of those abilities, but due to controller limitations, you have to switch the manually via the weapon wheel, making it feel clunky.

Remember how people said Part One had to few weapons? Well, fear no more! You can buy a bucketload of weapons, all different, but not offering the flexibility the weapons in Zero Dawn had. You wanna shoot three different types of Ammmunition with your bow, like in part one? No problem, you just have to equip two different bows of the same kind, because most of the weapons only offer one or two types of Ammunition. Well, until you start unlocking Very Rare weapons about 20 hours into the game. I remember times having equiped two Sharpshooter Bows and three War Bows to have access to all types of damage and ammunition I needed. You have only five quicklots on your wheel.

You need to upgrade your equipment badly, at least on the higher difficulties, unless you want to get two-shot by mobs, which are swarming you relentlessly. Elaborate Critical Strike- animations are nice, but since you have no I-Frames, a well-placed Critical Strike on a machine is often more than enough time for it's buddies to tear you apart. The machines feel more unfair this time around. Zero Dawn had its camera issues, and combat sometimes felt unfair after you had been killed from off-screen three times in a row. This one tops it. The machines in Forbidden West mostly use elemental AOE-Attacks at range. you have no option for long dodges (well, maybe I have overlooked it in some skill tree), and your I-Frames are so limited, that it feels like frame perfect perfect dodges are needed. For me, a frustrating experience, bouncing off of enemies attacks like in pinball. Oh, and the machines are fast. I may be getting old, but a lot of attacks are barely telegraphed.

We got a german word for this, "Verschlimmbesserung", "improving" something until it becomes worse than, in this case, Part One. I fear for Part 3.

    Sup guys,

Playing on PS5, I was hyped to play HFB after the first Game. Trailers were amazing, graphics are decent in resolution mode but I also like and prefer the performance mode. Most of the times it handles the 60 fps very well.

What really bugs me, are the glitches and annoying gameplay quirks. Of course, the game received some patches by now but playing this game on day 1, it was simply frustrating. Already at the very first mission with Varl, I got stuck in a quest and had to re-load the game. this happened to me throughout the game a couple of times so far.
I fell through the map, got stock between Rocks. I was able to walk through walls in the base, which isnt gamebreaking but it shouldnt happen.
Riding a mount is super annoying. Often enough, you just get stuck between rocks and corners.
The glitches during sidequests are amazing - in a negative way. NPC's getting stuck so you cant talk to them at the destination.
While climbing works most of the time, sometimes the game just freaks out. Aloy does weird jumps she's not supposed to do, leading in frustrating gameplay moments that are very stressful. Climbing up a long neck shouldnt be stressful. But when she's clearly jumping for the grip and simply falls off, its just annoying as hell. Especially when you have to wait for the long neck to return to the position and this **** repeats a couple of time until it works. Wasting 20min if your time just isnt fun.
While this could be a lack from my players skill, its just annoying when you're getting ganged up and combo'd. I get it, you are supposed to dodge and sneak. But heck, getting combo'd into oblivion never was fun.

Im not sure how far I am through the game right now, but I encountered so many bugs and frustrating moments, that this highly anticipated game is more of a stress factor to me then fun. I really dont know how they **** it up so hard. A few bugs arent really a problem. Most games have them. But HFB really doesnt let you play for 1 hour without some bull**** happening.
I really want to like the game and I will complete it. But so far, i feel really stressed out by the game. Definitely not worth the 70 bucks for me. Should have waited.

Aloy's incessant talking about every little thing is infuriating, I don't need to be told 1000x to use my focus or to push a crate or to loot a corpse. They need to make hints optional. On the positive side the graphics and sound are amazing.

When this was announced and we started seeing stills, I got on board, along with almost everyone else, but this, this is not what I was looking forward too. I did clock in about 70hrs gameplay, so I've not just picked it up and moaned, but I did end up ignoring the side missions by the large by the 60th hour or so because it frankly got boring. Its not a horrific game by any means, but the novelty the first game set up, quickly disapated playing this one.

    The Pros:

Beautiful, this looks like what I want a next gen game to look like, and there are more than a few occassions I've stopped and marvelled.

The load times on PS5 are non-existant, more than once I've waited for it to load to realise it's waiting for me to press X.

    The Cons:

This has fallen into the trap of fetch this all the way from the end of the map and come back again... good boy/girl. To the point that 3/4 of the way through the game I couldn't be bothered as I was sufficiently levelled up to get through to the end. The stories and hearts behind them felt robotic.

The Story... this may have suffered from *panic stations we need more scripts*. Someone then wrote out a 6000 page treaty for the entire saga, which got shot to s**t by the higher ups, and they cut it down to just keep all the Michael Bay bits, or for a better anaology The Matrix, and then the sequels.

Climbing pretty much anything. Kudos to the yellow X's and Lines, but dear lord I lost my rag more than once trying to climb a tower or quest sensitive section.

It also suffers from Far Cry-itis... by the second game, collectable issues, if you want legendary anything grinds, combat balance and the attitude or lack there of the other tribes, but I'll end up spoiling it.

Is this worth £70. Nope. I probably would have been just as grumpy at £35. Wait till its on sale. Sadly, this is The Matrix Reloaded.

    .
There are instances where you manage to dodge a melee attack from a giant enemy happy that you dodged it and that very moment your character gets thrown back or hit as if some deadly wind was surrounding the enemies limb or tail. The fact that there are no combat upgrades to increase the length of your dodge (especially with the size of some enemies) just makes me shake my head. It's an achievement to manage to dodge but to repeatedly still get hit when you DID get out of the way makes some enemies attacks nearly impossible to avoid

Many of the characters are bland and forgettable and conversation with them is like neverending "blah blah blah" and I DO mean neverending

The climbing is slow and dreadful, it is NOT improved from the first game as much as they say. The melee combat is pretty darn bad I don't find the melee combat fun at all, you can attack small creatures and swing your spear right over them missing half the time. The swings are slow and you cannot cancel attacks. In concentration mode which slows time it also slows how fast your thrown spear or arrow moves and makes it move slower than the enemy which makes no sense.
Yes the game is beautiful, and it does have some fun aspects, and I like the difficulty level, but I'm sick and tired of this game getting called a masterpiece.
I have about 45 hours in I hate to just skip so many side missions I had planned to do but there seems to be more moments of frustration than fun at times so I think I'm just gonna finish the story and trade it in. This game COULD have been a masterpiece and might possibly end up a 9/10 game but there's ALOT that needs fixing and the game developers don't seem focused on fixing the important issues such as combat.
If you loved the first game as much as I did then do yourself a favor and wait until a year after release before you play this, and cross your fingers that these issues are fixed by then. Any reviewer who gives this game anything higher than a 7 in it's current state is either just a fanboy or a total sellout kissing the a$$ of the developers.
WAIT FOR A FEW MAJOR UPDATES BEFORE PLAYING!

This was a highly anticipated game for me after loving Zero Dawn. I put 80 odd hours into Forbidden West and honestly, the longer it went the less I enjoyed it. For a game that had such amazing lore and story elements to draw from, I was stunned at the boring and unnecessarily convoluted direction Guerilla took with the story Forbidden West. Actually, that's just the thing with this game...it's boring. There is none of the mystery of Zero Dawn, the map is littered with icons and Aloy talks you through every step of the game leaving nothing to the imagination. The characters have little to no emotion and drone on with ramblings of tribal conflicts and issues that are difficult to care about. The game is extremely dialogue heavy and much of it is painfully mundane which caused me to skip whole sections of it despite never feeling the need to do so in any other game. Exploration is borderline pointless due to the aforementioned icon mess telling you where everything is. This is a Ubisoft "Map Game" in that regard, make no mistake.

Forbidden West pretty but it isn't the generational leap in visuals that the original reveal trailers suggested. In fact the game has a grainy, noisy look which detracts from the visuals and is quite distracting after the clean image of Zero Dawn. The underwater sections were heavily advertised adoring the marketing by are simply poor. Not only are they visually underwhelming compared to the trailers but the movement is clunky and there's no way to attack underwater. I avoided swimming sections where possible.

Glitches and bugs abound here which is disappointing after the quality experience of Zero Dawn. Aloy is routinely stuck between rocks, melee execution animations don't even connect with enemies half the time, Aloy fell through the map a number of times, enemies die in mid-air, NPC glitches prevent being able to finish certain quests, aome icons don't clear from the map after completion etc etc...

The newly introduced grapple hook is half-baked and can only be used in pre-determined locations. The same can be said for climbing. Why can Aloy climb one wall but not this identical wall a few meters beside it? The glider isn't fun. It loses elevation too quickly and seems as though it has been deliberately nerfed to prevent freely exploring areas Guerilla doesn't want you to be. The list goes on. Many of the problems Forbidden West has are poor design choices but some are clearly as a result of hardware limitations. The game is indeed a technical achievement on last-gen PS4 hardware but no doubt the game was compromised as a result of being bound to said ancient tech as a baseline. Sadly, God of War: Ragnarok may suffer the same fate. Let's hope not. If you got this far, thank you. Just one more thing. I'm not at all a fan of From Softwares games but Elden Ring is the total opposite of Forbidden West and being so, avoids all of Guerillas mistakes. The "Ubisoft Map Game" style is dated and stale whilst Elden Ring was fresh. That's Elden Ring completely buried Horizon II: Forbidden West.

I found the abundance of crates to loot ridiculous, why make resources rare only to hand them to the player on a silver platter? The story was it’s saving grace. The game mechanics were a little busted, like I’d press a button for an action and it just wouldn’t do it. Even mashing the same button sometimes did nothing. Where Forbidden West lets me down is with how absolutely mouth droolingly stupid the game thinks I am. It has ZERO respect for my intelligence. There are no settings to turn it off. It just is what it is.

Oh... I wonder how I do this puzzle I begin to say in my head as Aloy spells it out for my in crystal clarity before the thought even finishes. Oh, I wonder if this is the correct room to be in... immediately cut off by Aloy telling me I'm in the wrong room and need to turn around. Oh let's quickly scan this enemy and see his weakne.... nope, Aloy blurts out mid thought I SHOULD USE ACID! Apparently I'm a baby that needs my hand held. I'm 60 hours into the game and Aloy STILL tells me... oh, I wonder if I use my glider to get down there. No duh... wow. The baby needed help again.

This is the single biggest mess up they made. It plays like the marketing team found a bunch of 60 year olds at a local mall to play the game as their first ever video game and took their feedback as gospel. It's infuriating.

The next biggest problem, I've never grinded. Not once. Never. I avoid all enemies I don't need to kill. I've only killed enemies I'm forced to due to circumstance or quest lines. I'm not halfway through the map and my character is already max level. Quests give skill points... great idea. Quests giving massive experience... not so much. The entire EXP system needed a massive overhaul before shipping. Very poorly made. Or they want you to be max level before you're halfway done the game?

Another issue I've experienced is the games punishing you for exploring. The nearest ? mark to the starting location pretty much requires an item to attain. Said item is 30ish hours into the game. The first quest you do? A side path that requires an item that's like 40 hours into the game. And that side path is off the main map. I'm just supposed to remember that a random quest cave I visited 40 hours ago had a side path that required an item to open... constant dead ends like this.

This isn't a metroidvania. It's easy to run back to a random location in 2d games. Climbing up a massive mountain for 5-10 minutes with enemies along the way and no campfire there to fast travel back to AND THEN finding out I'm missing said item to open said path is a middle finger to the player. Game traversal isn't remotely easy enough for this type of implementation. VERY VERY VERY poorly thought out and implemented. Gating areas and progression through item checks, good... doing that constantly from the starting moments of the game and putting all said item checks 30-50 hours of traversal later? Not good. This system required better or more experienced people implementing it.

My final main issue with the game is just TOO MANY WEAPONS. Oh... should I use my warrior bow with ice or the one with fire or the one with electricity or or or and that's just one weapon type. You often need more than 1. And so many different bows... It's frustrating to need to open the menu to unequip weapons or even armor because they're just so incredibly situational. Like... why would you ever... EVER main armor that boosts heavy weapons? Ever? Why would you? But oh.... I picked one up and this is a pretty hard fight so I guess I need to pause the game and take myself out of the battle and change my entire outfit mid fight now.... Who thought that was cool? It's like the weapon system from the old game and then someone tried to shoehorn in Borderlands absurd item system on top of it. It's such a terrible juxtaposition of anything the game should have been attempting to do.

Oh... and fire the person or people that made and implemented the potion "system" (if you can even call it a system). That person or people have zero reason to have punished us like this. Just rip the entirety of it out of the game and their end credit lines with it. Terrible in every facet and every meaning of the word. Nonsensical and unnecessary.

Finally I suppose I should mention the combat. Other than my above complaints about the garbage item system, it's mostly better than Zero Dawn. The rock paper scissors aspect of it gets a little old but it's still better.

Overall... it's such a highly polished and clearly passion driven game. You feel the love. Really. But so many design failures and feature implementations gone horridly wrong that it's difficulty to give it better than a 7. Sorry guys. It hurts me. It does. But this is the score the game deserves.

Combat was made more annoying. Enemies have more health for no reason. You can’t headshot enemies with the bow anymore. Now it takes 5-6 hits to kill them with the bow. Aloy gets knocked down a lot and takes a long time to get up. Upgrading skills/traits was also made more tedious.
It’s like they copied the giant spiderweb trait trees from FF15. I’ll be honest, I did not want to grind gear, weapons and coils so I played most of the game on easy and story mode.

Environment- it’s beautiful, but the color palette was all the same as Zero Dawn. You don’t feel like the world is anything new. (except for the beaches). When I finished the story, I had no desire to go back into the world and finish 6000 more side quests.

In summary I think Guerrilla games tried to do too much with Forbidden West's gear and upgrading systems. It was already at a fine point in the original game. I would have MUCH rather seen Guerrilla put more effort into the middle game story and fleshing out the Tenakh characters to be more likeable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Horizon: Alloy's quest to get more titles than Daenerys

I don't think I have ever both loved and hated a game like I did Forbidden West. At some points, it can be stunning and entertaining while sometimes so dull, boring and uninspired.

Technically, there weren't many issues. Occasional bugged quest here, clipping there. Especially Alloy's braids. I swear those things are alive! Dialogues could use a bit of polish.

Gameplay is pretty much the same as in HZD with few very nice QoL features like glider, stash and finally a frelling FLYING MOUNT. Melee combat got a bit of love with some eye candy combos but is still far inferior to ranged combat. Still no block. Why? New weapon types - some great, some not so great. Prompts (critical/silent strike...) were very inconsistent. New machine types were awesome.
The world is beautiful with plenty of extra stuff to do/explore but the resource farming was a bit too much and the climbing is the ABSOLUTE WORST.

Story is... meh. Too many plot holes, predictable. HZD made my eyes water (in a good way). HFW made my eyes roll. The last mission was very disappointing. It was basically just few Spectres, climbing, one fight against a single Zenith, climbing and then a fight against another Zenith in a Power Ranger morph of a machine very easy to beat (had more trouble fighting enemies like apex Thunderjaw/Stormbird). The majority of the final battle happened in the background.

Characters? That's a big WTF from me. Characters is where "the message" comes in. BIG TIME. Cranked up to the 11^2. There's plethora of new characters and, without any exaggeration, 98% of them are either black or female (mostly both though). If I don't count badguys, a-holes or straight up morons there are only FOUR! white man characters with more than 2 lines of dialogue. One is Erend who was shamelessly reduced to a comic relief and mule who gets smacked around by a (female of course) vegan hippie. The other three are literal clowns... oh sorry... performers.
Everywhere you go, every time you meet a new group or find a new settlement, a woman is the leader. Most of the quest givers are women and men are just the weaklings you need to go save in that quest. There are two enemy human factions. Guess who is leading both of them? A black women. During one of the ingame activities you start hearing about this tenakth called The Enduring. A legendary warrior who was never beaten and very few people earned the right to even challenge The Enduring. You obviously earn that right, you go to the challenge site and who is waiting for you there? A little scrawny old (no joke she's at least 60) woman who happens to be the toughest human enemy in the game (including Eric, the only Zenith you actually fight directly).
I like Tomb Raid series. I consider HZD to be one of the best games. I always play a female character if the game allows me so no, I am not just another guy who hates powerful women. Forbidden West just took it way, WAY too far and for all the wrong reasons.
The whole Utaru tribe also feels so out of place. I mean a vegan tribe? Come on...
There is only one new character I liked - Kotallo.

Still, HFW provides an enjoyable experience. I've finished it at 85% completion in 77 hours. It was a bit disappointing how easy getting platinum is though. Worth a playthrough? I'd say yes. Definitely yes if you can borrow it from a friend or get it at a discount.

I really tried to like this game but its story just fell flat in so many ways, if you liked the first game then you will like this one but otherwise I would avoid this game. Expand

They did many things right but the new side games added to Zero Dawn are just annoying and frustrating.

This is what I loved about the first Horizon game - challenging and varied combat, made more complex with various modes of damage and resistance and various enemies, super engaging storytelling. If you like action RPGs, this game is a must.

The core game didn't change much and I couldn't rly get into the story at all. Despite that, gorgeous game and tight responsive gameplay. It's not my cup of tea and I also couldn't finish the first one because I got bored but overall most ppl will probably have fun with it. Side note: all these ppl rating 0 just because they don't like the story or part of the gameplay.... How about aThe core game didn't change much and I couldn't rly get into the story at all. If you like your food in a restaurant but don't like the presentation or the service, would you rate it with 0 aswell? Doesn't sound fair right. I am convinced that these games are just Graphical showcases, because thats all the Horizon franchise seems to have going for it. Imagine, a game that is set in the distant Future, where we got knocked back to prehistoric times, and we have to fight giant robot dinosaurs, SOUNDS AWESOME. But this game does nothing really new.

Aloy is still a MID protagonist, that is so very hard to

Horizon has enchanted me again. After a slow start, a graphically beautiful, sophisticated sequel comes, polished in every aspect, and underscored by a great soundtrack on top of that. The sequel was simply a success. Everything that worked before works even slightly better now. [Issue#317]

Horizon Forbidden West is Guerrilla's best game to date, taking Aloy to new heights with a blockbuster release that meets the high standards set by PlayStation in recent years. While it's totally worth fans jumping in on day one, it's perhaps better to wait a few weeks until all the bugs are ironed out.

Horizon Forbidden West is exactly what everyone thought it would be: an amazing game. It has an open world with plenty of things to do and places to explore, fights against some really well-developed machines and stunning visuals. The feeling is that the second game of the series improves on what was already great, and it feels rewarding and fun to play. It is another single-player masterpiece from Sony.
