Finally a good tactical Shooter on a PS5

You have a blast with this once it clicks with you and your Team comunicates and everyone works together. It has a steep learning curve but it is absolutely worth it

Things I like about HHL on PS5

    - The quality is great, textures, lighting and sound.
    - No fuss UI, really easy to get into a game and understand how progression works.
    - If people are willing, it can be immersive if people are working together.
    - When you understand how the modes work, it becomes a lot easier in terms of strategy.
    - Length of games are long, so you have enough time to really dig in and enjoy it.
    - Surprisingly - you can see enemy 250m away with some detail.
    - Really easy to switch between squad and team chat
    - Awesome to overhear over teams chatting when you get close (some sort of proximity chat thing)

    Things I don't like

    - Aiming, it seems it's harder to simply aim at an enemy on console, you have sensitivity, this deadzone thing (how much you have to move the stick before it recognises it). You have to wrestle a little bit to get it where it needs to go, and with recoil etc. sometimes you're all over the place.
    - It's not apparent from the start unless you read the manuals, what each role does, so as a noob you don't know how you can help.
    - If no one is talking: if there's no communication, the game becomes frustrating because the idea is about holding ground, not kills - so if no one is working together to make points you can spawn from, you are left to run long distances just to get back in the action.
    - Running: it's meant to simulate real speeds but the steps and movements are too drawn out, they need to speed it or add more steps in per metre to create a sense of urgency.
    - The scoreboard only uses icons to reference how you did, they need to add text so I know how I performed quickly.

Tips: download this with a few friends if you can so you're not left hoping people will or won't chat.
I found enabling cross play helps with people who want to chat.

In my opinion, the most refreshing and progressive evolution of the FP shooter genre since BF1942. Don't be put off by the low score reviews. This game ain't a casual drop in experience, and is not for gamers with a low attention span. Those players bounce right off the surface and are likely the ones leaving poor review scores.

Invest a little time learning how this game ticks (hint: more like a FPS Company Of Heroes than the current iteration of BF or COD) and I doubt you will regret it. A little persistence, a little research....trust me. Still less to get your head round than the average RPG or Strategy game.
The best things in life often require a little effort after all, and the battles you'll find yourself in as a result are well....unparalleled. Hope to see you in the field.
Note: I deducted a point due to some niggling ongoing stability issues that it would be disingenuous not to acknowledge. Early days on console so hopefully they will be rectified.

A stellar experience, with some of the most visceral gun battles I've ever experienced. There's a catch: Everyone must learn the rules. It's a complex system, it's unforgiving, it's unforgettable. It'd be easy to play one game and say "this isn't for me", but give it time and take time to learn it. It isn't COD.

Also, it probably has the best sound design I've ever heard in a shooter.

Another two weeks on and I think it is the best multiplayer team game I have ever played (I’m in my 50’s and have been playing video games since I was in my teens). The tactical elements are so deep, and the atmosphere is just phenomenal.

The key to enjoying this game is understanding the mechanics, communicating, and playing as a team. Can’t praise this game enough, it’s absolutely awesome. It has its faults and bugs which will be ironed out, but overall it’s an incredible experience. Highly recommend if you’re prepared to invest the time to learn how to play. Besides shooting you’ll need to manage squads, manage spawn points, team buffs and team resouces if you choose to play as a commander or officer. Winning by communicating with your squad and other team leaders gives and unrivaled sense of satisfaction. I can say more but im sure other reviews have the details i missed covered. For this game to be enjoyed to its fullest, it requires teamwork. If there are folks who do not communicate using the in-game chat, or even follow your officer’s and commander’s orders, you’ll do poorly. Not only will you not do well in game, but the game will ultimately not be enjoyable for not just you, but likely your unit and your entire team altogether. HLL thrives on teamwork and communication. Your officer didn’t setup an outpost? Good luck running 1200m to the frontlines. Your commander didn’t send in a recon plane? Good luck finding enemy position. Your medic just wondered 400m from your unit? Good luck getting revived. This game is incredible. At least, when the other players are doing their jobs. I’ve already made new friends from finding well-adjusted people who work together to take objectives and help each other on the battlefield. With weapons that look and feel real, and bullets that do a fairly realistic amount of damage, this is just the tip of the iceberg of a game that the devs were not just ambitious, but also made a war game that is in a completely new and amazing category. All I could hope or ask for is simply more map content, and simply game patches (and I know they will do at least that.

This isn’t your little brothers call of duty, so if that’s the game you’re looking for, call Activision. Leave the RTS/FPS godsend titled Hell Let Loose to those who want to enjoy it for what it is.

It’s a combination of the original Battlefield 1942 and the board game Risk, but in a digital format for console upgraded to 2022. It’s a game with extremely accurate historical battlefields from WWII and a great game for the more mature player who feels that the other first shooters on the market are to childish. The game needs a level of intelligence and strategy in order to succeed. If you’re lucky and end up in a squad and also have a great commander, I’ll guarantee that you’ll be stuck for hours w/o understanding what happened with time. The team spirit on the field with the serious players is an amazing experience that gives you a feeling of genuine brotherhood (or sisterhood). The console version is still struggling with some problems as far as bugs and server issues, but seem to be dedicated to resolve issues as soon as they surface. If requires you to work together, not only at a squad level but at platoon/company level too using both Squad chat and proximity chat (also command chat if you are the squad leader so you can talk to the commander and other squad leaders etc).

The gameplay feels realistic in terms of there being bouts of intensive firefights dispersed with times when you are moving to a location, which can take some time unless a friendly driver stops to pick you up. ;) This change in pace between the firefights just helps to increase the tension until suddenly you hear a crack of gun fire and rounds start whistling past your head as your vision goes blurry.

If you're after a quick fix of fast paced mayhem (thinking COD/Battlefield) this game might seem a little too slow paced for you. If, however, you're looking for a realistic feeling, team based tactical experience then this could very well be the game you've been waiting for.

The game also fully utilises the PS5's haptic feedback so you get some good resistance as you're lining up on your enemy and gently squeezing the trigger. Also, you can 'feel' the ground below you as you crawl on your belly. The sounds are great, the graphics are awesome. I'm loving it!

Is also exceptionally unbeginner friendly, there is no tutorial which it desperately needs as the game opens up into a menu and you have no idea what to do, so you kind of try something, and it just a mess. And the game is complicated from what I can tell, people need some help getting into the swing of things otherwise you just run for like 5 mins at a time to a spot on a map, and your location is poorly marked, and then you try not to die but likely will and it all starts over again and repeats just like that.

Definitely not a game for everyone but incredibly fun and I can play for hours. A much slower paced game that relies heavily on teamwork, communication, and understanding your role. Easily the most immersive game I have ever played and at this time my favorite game!

If you expect this game to be COD or battlefield and go guns blazing all the time. You are not the person for this game. There is no feedback on if someone is killed, as in real life you would also not know. This is an 2nd World War game with realistic mechanics and its amazing if you have a team of players who are communicating with you. Not for the weak minded.

Game is plaqued by the devs own egotistical incompetence.

You have not one but two respawn timers after each death. Have a commander that wont listen or overall sucks? Well congratulations there is no way to vote to remove them. Playing as a sniper which you rarely get to do an while you're racking up kills someone else joins then votes you out so they can hog the squad.

Playing as a sniper which you rarely get to do an while you're racking up kills someone else joins then votes you out so they can hog the squad.

Additionally you cannot swim at all nor really climb or mantel anything because they don't feel it is important.

Want to cross a body of water good luck you're going to have to run all the hell away around it.

Then you have issues with menus being bugged out, or not being able to use voice comms, a HUD that gets bugged as well so you can't see who is talking.

Also at times the icon for your objective that you are to attack or defend also does not always pop up so you have to look at a **** map then try to zoom in on.

This game suffers a lot from over thought UI options or controls an a lack of thought on what could make it enjoyable.

If you play as a squad leader, sometimes the boice chat is fine other times you will have people scrwaming in your damn ear from all 3 channel options making impossible to hear anything from anyone so you then have to mute all the squad leaders an commander just to enjoy the game.

They also don't seem to ban their most toxic players even after they team kill people or yell an scream an curse 24/7.

The servers are also trash, at times they are fine others they lag like hell where you stutter when moving an literally have to stand still or walk extremely slowly just to move forward. I know 100% it is not my internet as I have a 1Gb internet connection in other games I have a 8 to 16 millisecond ping in their game its will average 80 to 140 100% of the time.

This game could be great but with all of its bugs an problems an the toxicity of the players not being delt with I would tell you to not buy this or pick it up if it goes on sale, as I feel robbed by them for paying for this when it should of been free to play in its current state.

I also do not see how anyone with 20 to 30 hours in game could give the game anything above a zero.

Before I close I'd also like to note respawns are placed extremely far away from objectives making this a walking simulator, an that the collision doesn't seem to work most times as LMG gunners can often kill you while laying being rocks from a distance, and that if you suffer from any form of epilepsy do not buy this game as if you are getting shot at the screen shakes an will more than likely trigger you, as well as the fact that right now the game can barely reach 30 frames a second an often leaves a ghosting effect on the animations anytime you move.

This has to be a joke. Absolute bonkers amount of downtime. Unreadable map. Crazy frame drops on a PS5 with graphics worse than BFV. I was going to buy this, thankfully they gave it with PS+ so I dodged that bullet.

I'm not joking when I say 20 minutes. This game is like a multiplayer walking simulator. Walk past some pretty cool trenches... be nice if there were enemies here. Walk past a tank: be pretty cool to drive that. Walk past some stationary guns, be pretty cool if I could sit in that and use it. Nope, nope, and nope. There's so much cool stuff in the map that would never see action because the map is massive, and the objectives are so far apart, but as far as I can tell, almost everything in the map is just fluffy scenery. You can't really interact with anything. Then, Somehow, on my 55" screen TV, I still need a magnifying glass to understand anything shown on the map. Even a look at the scoreboard is a f*cking struggle, because the devs f*cked up the touchpad button. It's ridiculous.

The game seems not finished yet and this is quite disappointing.
First there are some technical issues. For example the Voice over Ip ingame chat. On standard settings PS5-communication in HLL is via the Dualsense Controller. Seems a nice idea because the Dualsense has a microphone and also a speaker. Unfortunately the output of Dualsense is far too quiet even on the highest settings.

Seems a nice idea because the Dualsense has a microphone and also a speaker. Unfortunately the output of Dualsense is far too quiet even on the highest settings. Maybe it’s due to the hardware of the controller, maybe due to the game, maybe it’s both... But why did no one test this before releasing it on the new Playstation?! And why is it not possible to switch the VOIP sound output to the TV?
Let’s talk about the gameplay. The first 10 hours give you some really great moments, but sadly they also give a really big mountain of frustration. The developers did not include a tutorial mode or a shooting range to get used to the functionality of the classes and weapons. Everything has to be tested out at the game servers and that gives a bad experience to teams that get “testing newbies” into the squads. Needles to say that this is also a bad experience for the new players.
There is also no possibility to host a server manually. That would allow new players to try things out without weakening the rest of their team. The only way into a server is a “quick match” option that seems to be like “free for all”. Why is there no way to host a server manually or to manually join a server from a server list? And why is it even not possible to choose a map by myself? Everything is so random that I first thought HLL wasn’t finished with updating.
It’s really sad: HLL graphics are really good and sometimes the atmosphere of the game is nearly amazing. HLL has a lot of potential and a lot to offer. But the developers delivered something to the PS5 plus community that is really difficult to get into and that still has some serious issues that damp the experience.
Thus I think the game will lose a lot of players in it’s first two months on PS5. Just giving the game to PS Plus members is not enough. Developers need to ask themselves how they can attract new players into staying and returning. Too much frustration leads to a shrinking community.

IT'S THE GIVE THAT KEEPS ON GIVING

I really, really, really wanted to like this game. I've played many world war 2 games. I put a bit of time into this one, mostly because I stupidly thought with enough practice I'd get decent enough to maybe enjoy the game. I was wrong. I've never hated a video game this much in my life.

After roughly 30 hours of gameplay, I've killed 12 enemies and died more than 200 times. 28 of those hours consisted of running from an idle part of the map trying to find any friends or enemies.
I've played multiple matches of "LOSE LIKE HELL" lasting 30+ minutes and not SEEN an enemy, but definitely managed to get killed by them multiple times.

And I'm a BOSS on Sniper Elite 4, a game even with its flaws is infinitely more fun than this game.

Particularly with the aiming which still needs some tweaking, the game is a bit glitchy (its a small studio trying to get this port on console. On top of that it was the free game of the month for PS5 which i think gives the developer some slack on it.) Lastly, there is a lack of a tutorial which I think is the single biggest flaw with this game.

One critique I see on here that is not valid are people complaining about being in a PlayStation party not knowing what to do. You ARE NOT supposed to be in a separate party, you should have you headset on and using game chat. If people are not using game chat this game can be a real slog and pretty chaotic. THIS GAME REQUIRES TEAMWORK AND COMMUNICATION. If your squad leader doesn't have a headset, they aren't putting down spawn points (which is why many negative reviews are of people thinking this is a walking simulator), and/or they aren't communicating with the commander then it will not be a fun experience.

If you have a fully working squad and most leadership knowing what they are doing, the experience is one of the most intense FPS games out there. Calling it an FPS is misleading though, as there is a pretty big strategy element to it. You need the commander and squad leaders putting down garrisons and outpost (particularly in safe and effective flanking routes). A little lesser known aspect is you also need supports dropping resources for the engineer to build resource nodes. These allow the commander to call in bombing runs, airspawns, tanks for armor squad, ect. This is a real strategic/fps sandbox. You can communicate with armor and push up giving the infantry cover, talk to artillery to zero in on a position, having recon harassing the flanks and spawn of the enemy, and having infantry holding down the line or pushing on the flanks in an attack.

This game is a phenomenal game and there is nothing quite like it on console. You just need to communicate. I love this game but i do recognize some of the issues. As of now in its first month on console i give it a 8/10. This is because the game play is great, and once people learn the importance of teamwork and using a headset there wont be an experience like this game. Glitches need to be fixed but in fairness to the developer they have been communicating with the community and offering a reasonable time frame for fixes (there has already been an update). If Team17 keep up the momentum than i easily see this becoming an FPS classic for console. If you are on PS5 download it now, it is free, and if you don't like it, its honestly understandable, but give it a couple months. I hope this review was helpful for those looking to get this game and quite honestly I encourage you to do so.

Couldn't be happier with this game. Got tired of COD and Battlefield so this is a perfect replacement. It does have a few minor issues but it really doesn't take away from the game. Love it and because of this game Battlefield 2042 will be an easy pass.

This game has the most detailed maps I’ve ever seen! HLL is brutal, punishing, frustratingly fun. fun. The game has greatly improved since the beta. The games road map has my interest peaked. I got it for free on PS+. Will gladly pay for dlc’s. Indie game studio doing all the right things! No AAA gimmicky **** with Hell Let Loose!

Fantastic game, the most immersive shooter I’ve ever played. Coms is a must, when everyone is communicating there is nothing like it. The hours fly by, love it.

Obviously the best WW2 multiplayer FPS. Awesome sound design, hardcore gameplay you'll really think you're on the front. Recoil is nice. Long story short, Hell Let Loose has captured the right war atmosphere what many ww2 console games have failed to capture. Hell Let Loose brings true warfare into your hands.

Fantastic game but does have a learning curve. Can’t Rambo across maps like COD nor do you get constantly sniped like Battlefield. Working together as a squad and as a whole team determined who wins matches not just KD which is a refreshing change to the FPS genre. Watch out, this is hardcore mode so 1-2 bullets will drop you. Highly recommend this game to anyone looking for a new game.

Cod has gone so far from its roots it is unrecognizable to what hooked a generation. This has taken what I remember from late nights on my PC as a teenager playing cod 2, and improved them to where I wish cod went. I can not say enough good things about this. It is stunning from the graphics to the atmosphere, the sound. The mechanics are not original entirely but done so well. A game has never ever made me go out of my way to leave a rating on it. Nor have I ever rated a game before but this game was so good, It made me go out of my way to rate it and it even got a 10.

If you know what to do and how to play this game can be very fun. Its pretty horrible tho on ps5 when there are 100 people fighting. You will learn how much a game can lag. I love the rest no battlepass etc just pure war and skill.

Games slow and clunky don't see why people like it.

Spend more time running that actually shooting, in a FPS...

The worst hit detection I have ever encountered in a video game. Invisible walls galore. Fences that block gunfire. Terrible movement and mantling, which will most of the time get you killed.

It's like every design element in this game was designed to hinder the player and piss them off.

Stay away from this cash grab trash.

Update: While its still rough around the edges, Hell Let Loose has very dedicated developers who are still updating the game for free. Since launch there were many improvements like a new fraction (Russia), new maps, weapons, lots and lots of bug fixes and performance updates etc etc.

Dont expect a shooter. HLL is more of a first person strategy /coop game where players have to take

Dont expect a shooter. HLL is more of a first person strategy /coop game where players have to take roles and work together to claim territory and push the enemy back. Kills and deaths arent important. Certainly not for everyone. If you played Cod Vanguard and thought its a **** representation of WW2 ...HLL probably still isnt for you because you had fun with Cod gameplay.

The large scale 50:50 battles are amazing, the maps are insanely huge, the sound design is great, and the game runs at native 4K 60fps with a very high draw distance which is very impressive for a pc port and really shows that the PS5 is still above high end pcs with proper game optimization.

The community is great as well (if they talk lol). If you want a somewhat realistic next gen depiction of WW2 warfare you should give Hell Let Loose a try. 8/10

The best tactical game I've ever played. She is wonderful in every way. 10/10

Unfortunately, since the few updates released by the T17, it's a different game. BAD GAME!

New updates make the game easier and easier. This is not what veterans of the game expect.

The current rating is 5/10 nothing more...

I will change my rating if you fix the game

The premise (a WW2 FPS with an interest in realism and a limited HUD) is sound. But snipers have an unreasonable advantage over every other unit, and while communication is important to the experience, there’s no decent alternative to voice chat (which almost nobody uses). For a large-scale WW2 shooter, try Enlisted instead – it’s more fun and is free to play. [Issue#8, p.97]

Caveats noted, playing Hell Let Loose with a decent squad of players willing to communicate, a competent commander, and skills sufficient to the moment is a unique, exciting, and extremely rewarding first-person shooter experience, ultimately much more satisfying than the arcade shooters to which most players are accustomed. Getting to the point of real comfort with the game’s mechanics, interface and team systems takes a commitment of time and the willingness to learn from others and the game’s written material, and is definitely not for everyone. Hell Let Loose does a great job of reminding us how important teamwork, communication, and reliance on others can be, not just in war but maybe in the broader context of our lives.

Hell Let Loose does little to overcome the downsides of its realistic take on World War 2 and strategic gameplay, but manages to reap some rewards out of it as well.
