An absolute 10. Anyone giving this game less than an 8 is being dishonest. Giving the whole game a low score because you felt the upgrade cost was too high or the dlc wasn't long enough is ridiculous. That's the type of thing that may cause a loss of 1, maybe 2 points at most, and only if it really upset you. Giving the whole game a low score because you felt the upgrade cost was too high or the dlc wasn't long enough is ridiculous. That's the type of thing that may cause a loss of 1, maybe 2 points at most, and only if it really upset you. I'm playing the director's cut on ps5 as my first time through the game, and it is an amazing experience on par with The Witcher 3 or even Red Dead 2- now I personally think RDR2 is a better game overall, but it is like comparing every new film made to The Godfather or Raging Bull... and even in that case, this is like someone saying that a Kurosawa film like Seven Samurai or Ikiru isn't a masterpiece because they prefer Citizen Kane.

Ghost of Tsushima is near perfect in every way. I see people complain about graphics!?!? This is one of the very few games I've played that runs 60fps in fidelity mode! Seriously, this game looks as good or in most cases better than anything coming out in 2023, especially taking into account the gorgeus art direction/design. the story is compelling and propulsive- It had me wanting to save main missions so I could savour the overall story more. Which brings me to side missions, which is where I think the comparison to Witcher 3 is warranted. Sure, if you're trying to 100% it there are a lot of going around searching for artifacts and charms and stuff, but the actual 'tales' missions are all great and give the world and main story more depth.

The combat is addictive and can be as varied as you make it. The further in the story I got the more I started experimenting with different combinations of ghost weapons, bow, and melee strikes, not to mention getting comfortable with switching stances meant I was taking on large groups and fighting each foe in a different way. I'm glad they didn't try to introduce magic or curses or something like that because it wouldn't have fit.

Overall, if you're at all like me and like games that focus on story just as much as gameplay, you'll be hard pressed to find faults with GOT. In fact, I was literally trying to think of reasons to doc a point and give it a 9 until I realized how stupid and unfair that was. This is the kind of game that stands out from everything else you're playing, and will go down as an classic.

and the side objectives in the game are repetitive after a bunch of times like yeah following a fox to a shrine or climbing a mountain for a charm is fun the first couple of times but after doing it for 50 times it starts to get boring and the map yet being pretty it has nothing to offer just some shrines here and there and some random bandits and mongols to kill it's my second playthrough of the game and after 14 hours of gaming I haven't even finished the first act of the game there's so much filler in it but if you are not a completionist like me and you only play the main missions you will definitely enjoy the game

However, the boss fights were still very difficult and were downright impossible on that difficulty. Iki island was moderately more difficult and scratched that combat itch for me. My only other gripe is that I wish the game had been longer because it was so good and I enjoyed it so much. I still put in over 60 hours but would have been happy to put in another 30-40. The game is just that fun. I’m hoping that the rumors of a sequel are true as this has been my favorite game on PS5 thus far.

Most of the negative reviews are just people who bought the ps5 version after playing the ps4 version and were upset that there wasn’t much added. Anyone who has serious issues with the gameplay itself either doesn’t like RPGs or just has a very subjective opinion regarding the combat or graphics (graphics are extremely good in my opinion).

My negatives are mostly around the open world element. I nearly didn’t finish the game because of fatigue. There’s just too much pointless filler in the open world (a common issues with arpgs these days). That would have been a massive shame because the end of the game is great.

I don’t mind there being an open world but I wish they’d have put more development effort into the major side stories rather than the filler content.

I tried the online multiplayer a bit. It was a moderately interesting distraction for a while but isn’t as good as dedicated MP games so I don’t really see the point of it tbh.

Overall 9/10. What it does well it does VERY well.

The conversation is unbearably bad and the developers must be so proud of themselves so much so that you can't skip any conversation. Ghost of Tsushima is what happens when style and passion collides with safe, bland, AAA gaming.

I can’t comment on whether or not the upgrade from PS4 is worth it as this release was my first experience with Ghost of Tsushima. Although I can say that the Iki Island expansion is just more of the same.

Ghost of Tsushima commits the same sins as a lot of other recent games - open world with a bunch of unnecessary, uninspired side activities, side missions, resource collecting, upgrades, light RPG stuff, collectables and camps to clear. Basically it’s a big map that’s really a repetitive checklist. It is bloated, goes on too long and does not respect the player’s time.

The gameplay is fun, especially in the early hours of play, but it doesn’t have enough depth or variety to last the games run time. Standoffs are cool at first but get old. Combat is simple but satisfying and they give you just enough options to keep things fun for a while. Stealth is shallow and enemy AI is poor. For some reason there is too much linear, tedious climbing and you feel too floaty when jumping about. Exploration doesn’t feel very rewarding and riding about starts to drag.

The story is enjoyable but doesn’t really do anything interesting or get you heavily invested. The game starts off and ends pretty well but of course most of the game is drawn out. The characters are good but not super memorable. I enjoyed that the game had some humour from time to time which certainly helped break things up a bit.

So what really elevates Ghost of Tsushima above the competition? First of all I think people really wanted an open world, historical, Japanese, Samurai game and this definitely got my attention. Then there is the style. This game looks beautiful and not because it tries to push the limits of technology. It’s the art direction, the colours, the constant beautiful views, the wind and weather, the commitment to the time period while also not being dedicated to realism.

The other thing that comes across is the developer’s passion for the location, time period, Samurai culture and other media that has done this before. It’s clear that a lot of research was done when creating this game. I enjoyed it so much that I found myself looking up Tsushima, Iki and Mongol and Japanese history. The inspiration from Samurai films shines through as well and I appreciated the visual options. I played this in Japanese with English subtitles and had a good time soaking it all in.

Overall I enjoyed my time playing Ghost of Tsushima but there was plenty of monotony. I am not in any hurry to play it again or get a sequel. If you’re looking for an open world, AAA, PS4 era game I would probably recommend Ghost of Tsushima over the competition.

It’s more of a regular DLC paired with some improvements for the PS5 rather than a true director’s cut. However, the developers do deserve praise for how skillfully they inserted the expansion into the narrative of the base game. The story about Jin’s past and the sins of ancestors is great (as opposed to boring side quests), new enemies pose a challenge, and the game as a whole shines on PS5’s more powerful hardware. I wish the visual improvements were more noticeable though. [11/2021, p.31]
