An absolute 10. Anyone giving this game less than an 8 is being dishonest. Giving the whole game a low score because you felt the upgrade cost was too high or the dlc wasn't long enough is ridiculous. That's the type of thing that may cause a loss of 1, maybe 2 points at most, and only if it really upset you. I'm playing the director's cut on ps5 as my first time through the game, and itAn absolute 10. I'm playing the director's cut on ps5 as my first time through the game, and it is an amazing experience on par with The Witcher 3 or even Red Dead 2- now I personally think RDR2 is a better game overall, but it is like comparing every new film made to The Godfather or Raging Bull... and even in that case, this is like someone saying that a Kurosawa film like Seven Samurai or Ikiru isn't a masterpiece because they prefer Citizen Kane.

Ghost of Tsushima is near perfect in every way. I see people complain about graphics!?!? This is one of the very few games I've played that runs 60fps in fidelity mode! Seriously, this game looks as good or in most cases better than anything coming out in 2023, especially taking into account the gorgeus art direction/design. the story is compelling and propulsive- It had me wanting to save main missions so I could savour the overall story more. Which brings me to side missions, which is where I think the comparison to Witcher 3 is warranted. Sure, if you're trying to 100% it there are a lot of going around searching for artifacts and charms and stuff, but the actual 'tales' missions are all great and give the world and main story more depth.

The combat is addictive and can be as varied as you make it. The further in the story I got the more I started experimenting with different combinations of ghost weapons, bow, and melee strikes, not to mention getting comfortable with switching stances meant I was taking on large groups and fighting each foe in a different way. I'm glad they didn't try to introduce magic or curses or something like that because it wouldn't have fit.

Overall, if you're at all like me and like games that focus on story just as much as gameplay, you'll be hard pressed to find faults with GOT. In fact, I was literally trying to think of reasons to doc a point and give it a 9 until I realized how stupid and unfair that was. This is the kind of game that stands out from everything else you're playing, and will go down as an classic.

and the side objectives in the game are repetitive after a bunch of times like yeah following a fox to a shrine or climbing a mountain for a charm is fun the first couple of times but after doing it for 50 times it starts to get boring and the map yet being pretty it has nothing to offer just some shrines here and there and some random bandits and mongols to kill it's my second playthrough of the game and after 14 hours of gaming I haven't even finished the first act of the game there's so much filler in it but if you are not a completionist like me and you only play the main missions you will definitely enjoy the game

However, the boss fights were still very difficult and were downright impossible on that difficulty. Iki island was moderately more difficult and scratched that combat itch for me. My only other gripe is that I wish the game had been longer because it was so good and I enjoyed it so much. I still put in over 60 hours but would have been happy to put in another 30-40. The game is just that fun. I’m hoping that the rumors of a sequel are true as this has been my favorite game on PS5 thus far.

Most of the negative reviews are just people who bought the ps5 version after playing the ps4 version and were upset that there wasn’t much added. Anyone who has serious issues with the gameplay itself either doesn’t like RPGs or just has a very subjective opinion regarding the combat or graphics (graphics are extremely good in my opinion).

My negatives are mostly around the open world element. I nearly didn’t finish the game because of fatigue. There’s just too much pointless filler in the open world (a common issues with arpgs these days). That would have been a massive shame because the end of the game is great.

I don’t mind there being an open world but I wish they’d have put more development effort into the major side stories rather than the filler content.

I tried the online multiplayer a bit. It was a moderately interesting distraction for a while but isn’t as good as dedicated MP games so I don’t really see the point of it tbh.

Overall 9/10. What it does well it does VERY well.

Ghost of Tsushima is what happens when style and passion collides with safe, bland, AAA gaming.

I can’t comment on whether or not the upgrade from PS4 is worth it as this release was my first experience with Ghost of Tsushima. Although I can say that the Iki Island expansion is just more of the same.

Ghost of Tsushima commits the same sins as a lot of other recent games - open world with a bunch of unnecessary, uninspired side activities, side missions, resource collecting, upgrades, light RPG stuff, collectables and camps to clear. Basically it’s a big map that’s really a repetitive checklist. It is bloated, goes on too long and does not respect the player’s time.

The gameplay is fun, especially in the early hours of play, but it doesn’t have enough depth or variety to last the games run time. Standoffs are cool at first but get old. Combat is simple but satisfying and they give you just enough options to keep things fun for a while. Stealth is shallow and enemy AI is poor. For some reason there is too much linear, tedious climbing and you feel too floaty when jumping about. Exploration doesn’t feel very rewarding and riding about starts to drag.

The story is enjoyable but doesn’t really do anything interesting or get you heavily invested. The game starts off and ends pretty well but of course most of the game is drawn out. The characters are good but not super memorable. I enjoyed that the game had some humour from time to time which certainly helped break things up a bit.

So what really elevates Ghost of Tsushima above the competition? First of all I think people really wanted an open world, historical, Japanese, Samurai game and this definitely got my attention. Then there is the style. This game looks beautiful and not because it tries to push the limits of technology. It’s the art direction, the colours, the constant beautiful views, the wind and weather, the commitment to the time period while also not being dedicated to realism.

The other thing that comes across is the developer’s passion for the location, time period, Samurai culture and other media that has done this before. It’s clear that a lot of research was done when creating this game. I enjoyed it so much that I found myself looking up Tsushima, Iki and Mongol and Japanese history. The inspiration from Samurai films shines through as well and I appreciated the visual options. I played this in Japanese with English subtitles and had a good time soaking it all in.

Overall I enjoyed my time playing Ghost of Tsushima but there was plenty of monotony. I am not in any hurry to play it again or get a sequel. If you’re looking for an open world, AAA, PS4 era game I would probably recommend Ghost of Tsushima over the competition.

The Director's Cut is my first time playing Ghost of Tsushima as I wanted to wait until I could play it on a PS5 and I do not regret it. The Dual Sense controller really does increase the experience of a great game.

To start, the game is graphically very beautiful. There's lots to see and the landscape is generally quite diverse. It really does show off the graphical capabilities of the PS5 and I do enjoy how realistic most of the textures are. Everything sounds good and the voice acting is very average. The story itself is absolutely fantastic with lots of good lore in both the main missions and side missions with lots of good and important messages contained within.

With all that said, the game isn't perfect. While combat and gameplay is mostly good, the lack of decent crafting options is a bit disappointing. There's all the makings of what could be a good crafting system that isn't followed through on nearly enough and in fact isn't even ever actually called crafting. It certainly should be crafting, since a lot of the game is collecting crafting materials and there's enough materials in the game for a full crafting system, but a lot of the materials just end up feeling useless.

While Jin's (your main character) move set is very diverse, it's almost too diverse as there were clearly not enough buttons on the controller for them to do everything with this game that they wanted to, ending up with a lot of switching between weapons and sword forms while in combat. It doesn't always feel super smooth for that reason. However, the different ways you can play the game and either go straight into combat or use stealth or a mixture of both even makes the game feel like there's a lot of variety in how you can approach each mission.

I think my biggest issue with the game however is that it's simply too long. While this may be to how I decided to play, completing the side missions while also playing through the main story, the game felt like it was going on forever. I enjoyed most of my time with it, but as someone who likes to play a lot of games, I wouldn't have minded if it was just a bit shorter so I can move on to the next game. 25-35 hours including side content should be about the right length and this game is about twice that amount of time.

While I did enjoy Ghost of Tsushima, I do find it to be a bit overhyped when you hear people talking about it or read other people's reviews. While the game is high quality, there's nothing super innovative here, at least not innovative enough that I would expect other games to try it too. It's a fun game that is very much worth playing for the story and gameplay, but I don't see myself revisiting anytime soon.

The story in this game is fantastic and compelling from start to finish, not to mention the side missions that only flesh out the whole story even more. I did end up buying the PS5 version physically when it launched. The PS5 version adds Haptics to the whole experience and somehow increases the already amazing graphics... I do believe there's also a framerate option for those who prefer higher framerates.
It includes the DLC expansion story of Iki Island, which in itself was absolutely phenomenal. They also include a multiplayer mode now that is entirely free... it's a lot of fun, and for those who enjoy gaming with friends, I could see spending countless hours there. I haven't spent much time with it as I prefer single-player campaigns.

Worst part are dialogs and really long cutscenes. I would honestly say that 60-70% of the game is either watching cutscenes or running on horse listening to npc stories. Only because I replayed fights many times (deadly difficulty). On lower difficulty the ratio (cutscenes-gameplay) would be probably closer to 80-20! You can’t skip dialogs! I don’t know why is that, but games became movies at some point and this is really not good way to pursue. If story is great there is no point in force people to watch it, give us a chance if we would like to listen to the story or not. At this point I am leaving the game somewhere in the middle tired of endless dialogs. Expand

It's another bore fest of a game which starts with some fmv that you can't skip. It then becomes what every game seems to be nowadays , a job list. Go to Z to get X and take it to Y repeat ad nauseum. If I wanted a job list of pointless tasks I'd ask my wife if there was anything she wanted me to do.

My advice is to cut the grass as it has more entertainment value than this tripe

What I Dislike: Unskippable cutscenes even for the most mundane events. I don't need to see a 30 second cutscene of Jin petting his horse every time he finishes a quest. It aims for a relaxing zen-like presentation but to me, just came across as boring and slow.

How It Stacks Up: It is definitely a Sony quality game, but I think their other offerings (TLOU, GOW, Horizon) are much better games. It does have the best open world though, so if that's your main interest, this game will be for you. In terms of PS5 features, it has all the standard upgrades which enhance the experience greatly over the PS4 version.

    (10) Outstanding. A truly elite title that is nearly perfect in every way. This score is given out rarely and indicates a game that cannot be missed.

I’m surprised Sucker Punch was able to write this good of a story since the infamous series seemed to have a mediocre story. The main character struggles with maintaining his traditions or to do what is necessary to save his country from being taking over. The only thing I wish the developer could have done different is to allow you to choose which of those two paths to take instead of forcing you into one path but I admit that would be difficult to write out both ways. The route they take you on will help you decide on your own morals. The combat was also well done in this game, providing a challenge for those that want one. Sucker Punch made this one innovation that every game should follow suit on which is how they guide you through the world. They don’t give you a giant arrow to show you the way. They let you follow the wind. Follow that bird or fox that you found in the game. I’m surprised it took this long for someone to think of this idea. It’s so simply.

The good: everything. Combat is a nice compromise between the Dark Souls style gameplay that has been infecting games for the last decade and arcade fun that appeals to a wider audience. The play can wait for the right time to parry or dodge or hit enemies hard with throwing knives and smoke bombs. The gameplay is fun, fun, fun. Graphics are amazing. The art design makes brilliant use of color, nature, and traditional Japanese architecture. Facial expression and enemy design are AAA. Voice acting is also well done though I did not try the Japanese voice acting with English subtitles. More gamers should buy this game to let publishers know that they care about quality.

Ghost of Tsushima has the same issues with open world gameplay people complain about with games like Horizon Forbidden West and the Assassin's Creed franchise. There are questions marks everywhere and most are the same things: follow the fox, cut down bamboo, or collect a headband. Side quest all boil down to go there and kill this. This is why most people never finish games. (My advice for anyone thinking of abandoning a game is to instead lower the difficulty and stick to the main story missions.) A lot of the bloat is ameliorated by the tight focus of the missions and side missions. My play through was a little over 40 hours, which is quick for this kind of game.

The controls max out every possible button and button combination to the point that you will constantly hit the wrong button at the wrong time. The clutter of controls is very reminiscent of Read Dead Redemption 2 and the tendency of the player to accidently gun down NPCs instead of saying hello. One thing Ghost of Tsushima does that could be fixed for the ease of the player are battle stances. You have to select different stances to fight swords men, shield men, or pike men. Why not have the Ghost auto select the stance depending on the enemy? One less button combo to press would very much help the player.

Full disclosure: I picked up Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut from my PlayStation Plus Extra collection.

Great game, really enjoyed the standoff mechanic, was also fun using stealth to tackle situations. It was a little annoying not being able to look at the map or use a menu after completing a mission whilst the end of mission animation was playing. Was also really confused why you couldn't hide bodies in a stealth game?! Otherwise an awesome game.

Not often I’d give anything 10/10 but this is truly epic.
The graphics are stunning, I can’t do them justice with words they need to be seen.
The gameplay and progression system is near on perfect, it doesn’t feel Grindy in any way, there is lots to unlock and achieve and the combat is fantastic, so varied it’s amazing from the one on one duels, stand offs, assassinations to out and out

This is the best game available right now on PS5 by a country mile, nothing has come close to this yet.

Really good open world, very interesting story with a emotional experience, the combat is just 10 out 10 so satisfying and never become boring. The audio is perfect, the ps5 features are excellent the only thing that I don't like its the repetitive mission. But I still think that his a masterpieces.

There is nothing more satisfying than perfectly timing a parry and slicing open the enemy with your katana. The is the best sword fighting mechanics I've ever experienced. And it's not just the sword fighting, the other combat mechanics hold their own. Whether you're throwing smoke bombs, shooting arrows, and sneaking up on an enemy and stabbing them in the back, in every way, shape and form, this game is amazing. There are no weaknesses in my opinion. It's an all around masterpiece. Expand

Fantastic Game! Ghost of tsushima on ps5 is a nice boost to fps and visuals, the only problem I have with this game is the ridiculous high price for an update and dlc!!! Besides that ghost of tsushima is a must own if you have a ps5.

Nice experience, but i have a feeling like i expected something more. Probably the best samurai game out there, visuals are stunning, combat is perfect. Player progression is nice. But what i expected is more cutscenes maybe, or some variety in the missions. I hate to say it, but for me, 90% of the missions are all the same. It is just ''Kill all the guys'' and almost nothing else. When iNice experience, but i have a feeling like i expected something more. Well done update for a great game. Lots of new content is complemented by a ton of new gameplay elements. More content was missing from the basic game, otherwise there was nothing to complain about. And now everything is fine. Reason to buy Playstation 5 if you don't already have one.

Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut has improved the graphic of the game greatly. The newly added Iki Island brings new stories and challenges, and further extended the story background. For players who have already cleared the game, playing the Director's Cut version is still an unforgettable experience.

It’s more of a regular DLC paired with some improvements for the PS5 rather than a true director’s cut. However, the developers do deserve praise for how skillfully they inserted the expansion into the narrative of the base game. The story about Jin’s past and the sins of ancestors is great (as opposed to boring side quests), new enemies pose a challenge, and the game as a whole shines on PS5’s more powerful hardware. I wish the visual improvements were more noticeable though. [11/2021, p.31]
