Rare for me to love a game so much that I can tell and see how much room for improvement there is. I overall give it an 8.5 so I'll be rounding up. Great game. It a gorgeous, fully-fleshed out world. Definitely has the GoT story vibe but it’s done well. Voice acting is incredible. The combat system is flashy. My only gripe is how incredibly easy it is but there is at least hard mode after you beat it.

Disfrutandolo como un niño, totalmente recomendable!
Un nuevo punto de vista para la saga, pesa mas lo positivo que lo negativo.
Mantiene la esencia pero con un punto mas adulto.

    About the game...

The game has an awesome Story, Characters, World Building, Gameplay, and several fights which I would consider one of the best in gaming history.

Side Quests begin shallow, but halfway they become decent, with some specifically being really good and offering extra Lore and narrative.

About performance, the Quality mode is flawless, but the performance one needs some improvements, for a new player I would tell you to play in Quality mode.

The game always needs a disable motion blur option, which was already confirmed to come at a later patch.~

All being said, buy this game and enjoy it, ignore people who just review bomb because it's not turn-based and lacks black people, which is the main reason they complain since the game isn't all white people like they like to spread misinformation.

Now you may ask why not a higher score well the reason is there is too much filler content. If they got rid of all the dumb side content except for the bounties this would have been like a 9 but those side missions really drag down the pacing because the main story is really interesting and the setpieces etc are really a feast to enjoy. But those side quests missions are also a part of the main story where you have to gather stuff to continue the main quest which also feels like stuff that would have been better to get rid of. If you take all the missions from the arcade mode with only the bounties in some of those open spaces then the game would have been a much better experience. So yeah right now I'm really enjoying the game when it comes to the story parts because those are super epic the other stuff should just be rid off. Also the combat is awesome but I feel like being able to put 4 to 5 eikons on the d pad instead of 3 eikons that you can switch through with l2 would have made the combat experience and depth much better as well as an extra button like to expand the normal moveset. Right now there is depth but doesn't even come close to the greats like dmc5. If they added all that stuff the game would have been a masterpiece but right now it's just a good game. Expand

No rpg mechanics. Horrible side quests. Tedious animations you see a 100 times. Poor performance in both modes. The game forcefully slows the player down by having the weirdest sprint mechanic plus no sprinting in towns. No exploration, it's a complete waste of time. Crafting system is pointless. Most characters are bland/boring. No party system. Voice acting is hit or miss. Pros.

It has the right ideas but poorly executed. You can still have fun but that fun will deteriorate as soon as half way through. Most of the abilities you obtain are gatekeep by point system in that you can obtain by gaining reputation points by doing side quests in which most are so boring.

    Pros:
    - scenery/graphics
    - cinematics
    - world building
    - combat ( Although it gets so easy you almost don't need to use health regenation)
    - Boss battle are really cinematic.
    - Music slams. Only thing in this game that is perfect. Headquarter music was soothing. Fighting sequence is good. Everything is good in each section.
    - Voice acting is good

    Cons
    - Side character development is trash. No talking in between. Silent. Jill especially. It's silent in between cinematic. The most development they had was through side quest that will most likely be missed because of how poorly structured most of the side quests are. People will most likely miss it.
    - Combat is way too easy.
    - Side quest are too much like a worse version of a ubisoft side quest until you get to the late game in which you wrap up each character focus quest. It's get this, get that. I need help and this wouldn't be a problem if the combat was so easy. Each mission takes 1 minute combat and a bunch of talking.
    - chest that I notice that drop something good is one. Most of the time, they were materials that can be gained elsewhere
    - exploring is redundant in that most of the section are explored via quest but the things you loot is literally 10 gil. Most of the items except consumables are 10k plus. Although this is negated with the hunt system in which you hunt beast that either give you upto 20k gil and materials for legendary weapon/armor/gloves
    - Weapons are cosmetics that provide only attack/defense upgrade. The special weapons do not have any special effects. Atleast add special effects if the weapons is crafted by titan material for example
    - The torgal system should have included more characters. For example, up d pad could either be jill/torgal/etc. You can input which character are "controlled" in which could have mediated that fact that there isn't a party system.

Thoughts that I really did not mind
    - Some people want more rpg elements but that's fine with what they are trying to build. It's an action-adventure game.

The graphics were way ahead for its time no new generation game in 2023 or before has ever looked this polished besides FF7 Remake, the music OST was majestic and went well with wherever you were or situations you constantly face for example the eikon fights the way the game sews cutscenes to cinematically to gameplay during these fights has never been seen before the game gives you too much to take in at once. Also the gameplay / eikon summon fights is so fluidly smooth top notch.

This however can be overlooked since the other elements of the story as I said are pretty great. We are no FFX level of writing but this Is more than enough.
    2) The combat system is also great. You can tell this was made by action- games veterans like Suzuki who know what they are doing and know what makes a good action- game. My main problem would be the difficulty but FF games have never been super difficult and so this doesn't bother me that much personally. The lack of significant RPG elements could also be a let down, but I was expecting It anyway. Overall if they can tweak the difficulty with future patches than this could became the best battle system of amy FF game ever.
    3) Exploration and side quest: this is the weak point of this game. Don't go in expecting much from this department: there is nothing here. The exploration Is better than FF13 at least but that's not saying much. The game is mostly Linear during the dungeons and than there are FF12 -style open areas in between. The problem is that in those areas most of the time there really is nothing of interest to be found( there are exceptions) except crafting materials. Regarding the side quest I didn't do them because I don't have patience but I heard they are garbage from a gameplay standpoint but good if you want to know more of the world, characters ecc... so make of that information what you will.
Conclusions: this game is not perfect in fact It has many flaws but it's the First FF since 12 that feels complete and coherent with itself. If you are an old FF fan that has lost faith in the series after the many flops of recent years, please try this game. It's not one of the best FF games out there but it's certanly not bad or one of the worst.

Let me preface this by saying that the only other Final Fantasy games I’d tried before was FF VII Remake (which is one of the best videogames I’ve ever played) and FF XV, so I’m a relative newcomer to the franchise. It’s ironic that FF XV was touted as a “A Final Fantasy for Fans and First-Timers,” but that game didn’t grip me at all! I played it only for 7 hours and had enough and never went back. FF XVI, on the other hand, gripped from the onset and never let go! From the trailers, I wasn’t sure whether it was my cup of tea though, but then I saw there was a free demo available and decided to give it shot. Boy! Was I in for quite a treat! After finishing the demo, I was immediately hooked and knew right there and then… I. HAVE. TO. BUY. THIS. GAME. NOW!

In those opening hours, the game succeeds in making you care about its story, characters and universe. I wanted to know more about Clive and his journey of redemption and vengeance (He’s a compelling protagonist and oh-so-easy on the eyes!). That’s what pulled me in, first and foremost. I wanted to know more about this fantasy world that felt like Game of Thrones meets Attack on Titan. I was in! And so I played more. Then, there is the presentation, from the visuals to the soundtrack, which is top-notch. You can tell you’re playing something special. It features some of the most jaw-dropping, bombastic, thrilling showdowns in recent memory. God of War Ragnarok’s final boss fight pales in comparison to the first titanic boss battle here. There a sense of scale, wonder and awe that not even that formidable title could evoke as spectacularly as FF XVI does here. It manages to shift up the gear, making every succeeding boss battle feel even bigger and more over-the-top than the last. Quite an impressive achievement.

Now onto the gameplay. It starts out pretty basic. However, as the story progresses you start acquiring more powers to diversify your arsenal and match your preferred gameplay style. It’s reminiscent of GOW in its use of special abilities, but not as sophisticated. Here, you’re far more invested in doing as much damage as possible in the shortest amount of time possible, which is where its combo system comes into the equation. It’s fast-paced, flashy and so much fun! If you’re coming off playing something like Elden Ring, FF XVI will feel like a piece of cake. You can unequip the rings of assistance you start out with if you want more of a challenge. Unfortunately, hard mode (FF mode) only unlocks after you’ve completed the game, which I thought was a misjudgment on their part. It’s not a perfect game, though.

The side quests do bring it down a bit. While not completely pointless, as they do add something to the world-building in many interesting ways, they can feel like a drag. Some are more interesting than others, with the overwhelming majority being subpar, not only in quality but also in presentation. You can tell all the money went towards those breathtakingly spectacular boss battles, because one features state-of-the art visuals and the other animation that wouldn’t feel out of place in a PS3 game.

So, the highs are so stratospherically high that it makes the lows feel mid at best. This is a solid 8 game, but the highs are sooo high that they push it to a 9. Just push through the slow parts and meandering side quests (prioritize those with a plus sign), because its boss battles are quite something to behold. You have to play and experience them for yourself to believe it! Overall, a fantastic game and the most fun I’ve had this year so far! You’ll come away wanting more! Fingers-crossed for a DLC in the future!

It’s pretty nice graphically but the world felt a bit boring for a FF game. The combat was fine but it wasn’t a really big point for me since it’s only kind of interesting during the bosses. I’m fine With it but I don’t think The system is super amazing and I felt like this game is often fighting it self.It feels too long for this kind of combat but it wants to avoid your standard rpg elements that you would see in other ff games. I think it would have been better if they just stuck to making it an action game without all the half hearted “rpg elements” which don’t really add anything like the itemization and crafting mechanic that feels there for the sake of it

I also feels there’s just too many cutscenes or they’re way too long. I realize ff has had a big focus on them since ff7 but those felt way more natural and it’s not nearly as over whelming compared to this game where there’s so many scenes and just constant dialogue.

    I don’t think it’s a bad game but I don’t see it as a great game either. 7 to 7.5 out of 10

Some scenes could have been better thought (like the fight against Odin)

    2) The gameplay is cool but... Once you find the right abilities then... You stick to it and never change you strategy in battle. Battles repeat themselves and become kinda annoying.

    3) Where's my elemental damages gone? Fire VS Fire is okay?

    4) Enemy variety is super weak! Soldiers, Wolfs, spiders, and some reskins/color swap. It's terrible! (Elden Ring did an amazing job on that front)

    5) On a technical level, this game feels old.
Ok it has fast loadings but everything else is dated : No dynamic weather, no night/day cycle, hyper static cutscenes...

    6) Very limited equipment management... You just buy the new sword and off you go.

    7) I did all the sidequests and... Oh boy they are BAD ! Around 60% of my playtrhough I just skipped
all dialogs and run like hell to the next fight or place where I need to press X for 3 seconds.

    8) The world is annoying. You spend your time teleporting from one checkpoint to the closest to your destination. No sense of real world.

    9) The battle music is cool. All the other musics are... well I don't know... I don't remember any!

    10) The gameplay loop is always the same: You talk to npc, follow a path, kill monsters, teleport to destination, rince and repeat.

    11) Oh and Clive receiving pins from every NPC is just ridiculous! (Take this and they'll let you through... every time!)

    12) ... (I'll stop here... you get the message)

The only positive in this game are the Eikons fights. (Bahamut is the best one. Truly epic)

Developers said that the game was like a rollercoster. But it's more like a boat ride on a calm river where you need to paddle a lot. Then comes rapid waters (Eikons fights) that launch you just enough to pass through shallow waters...

Played it... ended it... barely remember it.

The difficulty selector on the lowest makes the game less than an interactive movie, a low-budget follow-up to Kingslave with QTE. It is focused on the badly implemented Hack'n Slash and a "I want and I can't" with the theme of the parry in the fights. Epic battles are full of immersion-breaking QTEs and you watch the movie and just respond (or not) to button presses. Even in performance mode, the scratches and frame drops are felt, especially in QTE. Exaggeration in exploiting delivery missions. The story is boring, what is a like-Game of throne? Not kidding, obviously not, the argument is poor and rather seems like a bad attempt at ring of power together with willow cliches. The graphics are very bad and very painful (bought with current games or games also from Square-Enix such as FF7 Remake, FFXVI looks bad, is more painful and looks worse when compared to other games from other brands (Elden Ring). The villain is painful (yes, in FF we have already had villains of this type such as The Emperor, Zemus or Ultimesia...)

    Meh!:
If you complained about FFXIII being a endless corridor it was, how curious that here I don't see complaints or offended and if they complained that Lightning from FFXIII had the personality of a stone, Cleid arrives to lower the standard even more and pity others. Just as FFXIII-3: Lightning Return was another tweaked and renamed game, so it seems that this FFXVI was originally an expansion or DLC from Forespoken or Babylon's Fall or from the canceled story DLC expansions from FF15 full reuse

Compared to older FF titles, the overall story, environment, and theme seems rather tame to the epic imagination of the previous entries in the series. You will most likely find yourself spending countless hours doing MMO type messenger boy side quests and wondering if your time is being well spent.

Many of the combat mechanics ideas are borrowed from other action adventure games and don't really add anything unique to the gameplay element. There is little room for customization or building your character as most items are better than their predecessors. Many elements of the game are repetitive and honestly a bit boring. Much patience will be required to complete this title.

However, the environments seem well designed and the graphics for most areas are great with much detail and atmosphere. While some of the NPCs seem to be often too generic, the primary characters seem to be very well designed with detail to their persona. The cinematics of most of the battles including the boss battles are extremely well done and bring the excitement back to the game as what is mostly advertised in the trailers. Key moments in the main quest line do make the overall story more interesting and create more of an immersion of real world symbolism. Some dialog lines are great and will be moments to remember.

Overall, I don't feel like FFXVI lived up to the older titles in terms of greatness. However, if you are looking for a passive FF title with great cinematics and long dialog sequences then get ready to invest about 50-60 hours to complete this title.

Even though I miss the turn based battle system the gameplay on FF16 is just as fun. It's different but definitely entertaining.

I would definitely pay some money for a few extra DLC, but unlike FFXV, it's clear that the game is actually complete. Do I want more? Yes. Do I want some DLC to make the ending even tighter (and I really do believe they left it open so they could possibly add in a little DLC later on)? Yes, yes I do.

I enjoy action games, I enjoy RPGs, and I enjoy dark fantasy stories, but I don't enjoy a mediocre attempt to mash the three together to 'modernize' a series by doing none of them justice.

FF16 had a coherent story, I'll admit that, but it fell short of other similar dark fantasy stories. It obviously wanted to be GoT but instead came up with a story that ignored the amazing world building erected around it. This world has a lot of interesting ideas and people, but the story decides to focus on flat characters who don't have a range of emotion and it constantly ignores the bigger picture in lieu of shallow political intrigue. The second half of the story completely ignores the day-to-day perils the branded face that was built up in the first half to instead focus on a power of friendship saves the world feel. Not to mention that the story doesn't even take the time to consider how pivotal of an event the loss of a mothercrystal would be to any average peasant's livelihood.

The RPG elements might as well not have existed. I liked the first 5-10 hours where I was still unlocking and messing around with the base abilities, but those quickly dried up and you are only left with a slow trickle of new Eikon abilities. By end game, there's hardly any variability in the skills you obtain and you are left with defeating every enemy in the same manner. Not to mention that your 'stats' upon levelling up were meaningless and each new weapon or armor you obtain is always objectively better than the last. There's no choice in play style, no builds, and no replay value here. Once you learn that you can precise dodge everything the game has nothing left to give.

What I was hoping for was what previous FF games gave me; namely, a deep RPG system, lots of choice in builds/weapons/abilities, and satisfying game play that made want to just play the game to have fun. Instead, there was too much focus on the cinematics and the gameplay only served as a buffer between cutscenes.

The largest fault in my mind is that the best battle took place halfway through the game, and nothing else could hold a candle to its epic proportions - certainly not the final fights. Each Eikon battle was a high for the game, but putting up with the other 40+ hrs of half-baked mediocre RPG did not make it a worthwhile experience.

It might be the first FF game ever where i did not hate a single character in it. The game made me emotional and i just loved every second of playing it. Truly all negative reviews are probably fake as the game is great and almost perfect. How can you dislike it?? The way they brought back the dark, gory parts of Final Fantasy is great as well as it is what all fans have been asking for now i hope they just keep it. Clive is a great main character who has become on of my favorites and i will love him forever as he goes down as a legendary character to me like Cloud was.

In all honesty this game does everything it needed to and more. Some people will complain because it is not turn based but that's not really the style anymore and it would hurt the game more sometimes games need change but i do want to still see turn based FF games but this one defiantly did not need it. Overall please give this game a go, Square put so much love and effort into it even giving the game proper English lip sync/ the models were done with English which is rare, it has everything you will love from the FF series and more and if you have never played a FF game before hop in with FFXVI and enjoy the legendary game as it defiantly will go down in history as one of the best Final Fantasy games.

Visuals are beautiful, artistic direction is perfect, the music is divine, the gameplay is a masterpiece (don't listen to game journalist playing tutorials on easy mode).

Sacrificing turn based gameplay was worth for this gem. It's been a while since a solo player FF felt like an actual fantasy.

The game's combat is fun, and the eikon fight is awesome.
But the RPG elements of the game is very little, which makes me very dissatisfied, and the game play is almost always fighting, quite monotonous.
Finally, I don't like BE, I can't accept that Clive is dead, he should be living happily with Jill.

Full disclosure I've never been into FF games. Not for lack of trying. I tried 7 when it came out at a friend's house. I've tried the 2D games. I've tried 10. I just never could get into them. FF7 remake was ok, but when I finished the game I was ready to be done.

I love this game. The story is actually engaging, it has mystery but not so much that you have to study for 40 hours after the game to figure out what the heck is going on.

The only other negative is the language, it feels like they tried to hard to be edgy and it actually comes across comical more often than not.

The combat is fun. It's not my favorite combat system but it's better than ff7r or turn based. There's not much to hate here for me, some of the dialogue is harder to sit through than others, but maybe that's just my ADHD. I really like the characters I'm supposed to like. I really hate the characters I'm supposed to hate. The VA is great, the writing is decent for a video game.

The performance could be better, as well as a day one PC would be ideal. The first big twist stinks but it does make an impact.

Overall I'm glad they went in this direction, I'm sorry classic FF fans they changed it on you but I'm glad they did. The stories of these games have always been decently compelling but the game play dragged. They really did well in this. If you get proficient in the combat the trash battles are extremely quick and the boss battles are amazing.

This is one of the best video games in very long time. It's more similar to FF7Remake, than 90s FF games and that's how it needs to be. This is what modern FF is and if you don't like it, move on to somethin else.
This game is amazing. This is easily the best game i have played in 2023.

What I Dislike: Lots of filler for a 30 hour game. Most of the optional content is pretty boring. Not much gameplay to be had to be honest.

How It Stacks Up: It's a Final Fantasy in name only. Better to be compared to God of War. But as an action game, it does it pretty well. It's more story focused than gameplay focused though with a ton of cutscenes and quick time events. It's also very streamlined to the point of being very casual. But the story more than makes up for any flaws the game has.

I usually prefer turn based rpgs because I have a motor disability. However playing FF16 on story mode was actually quite easy and I didn’t run into much trouble at all and just beat it. I like the story which is more political like game of thrones . Clive and the other characters were all very well thought out and acted . And the visuals and music was great. With moogles, chocobos, magic and crystals this is definitely a Final Fantasy game, albeit modern. It’s definitely way better than anything since FF10. It is a personal game of the year contender. My only complaint is that the side quests were weak and also even though Clive had companions it didn’t seem like a party Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The question to be asked to themselves in order to review this game is whether we should consider games as works of art or simply as pastime. In the latter case we should only give value to gameplay, specifically to the "play" part.
The fact is, in academic work people stopped seeing games as such in the early 2010s, since then starting to discuss about games as works of art, giving importance to concept such as ludo-narrative harmony.

In the context of ludonarrative harmony-driven games, Final Fantasy XVI is a masterclass on how to make them.

Not a single gameplay element isn't thought out to be harmonic with the story, the aesthethics (what we could call "the point of the game", not to be confused with the narrative, or storytelling). The result is a chorus of elements all pushing in the same direction. The RPG elements could be left out from the game as they are near to useless from a gameplay perspective, but from a story perspective they give a sense to the community of the hideout, as you get stronger with the help of the community you built, the ties of consciousness which Ultima talks about. Not to mention every single character gets deepened in their background and personality (even the jukebox!).

The sidequest, which are underwhelmingly simple from a gameplay perspective, are not once out of place from a narrative point of view. They help establish the point of the story, giving you a reason to change things, until you eventually get to change them. Their simplicity is needed in order to make them quick. If they were more elaborate and complex they would lose the point they want to make.
While I agree they could have added some minigames or some more complex extra activity, I also think this sort of things could have distracted too much from the point.

I believe this is a great game, with incredibly strong story and cultural loops in spite of a very simple gameplay loop.
Nonetheless, if you play games just as a pastime activity, this is not the game for you and I would advise to go play some other game more focused on the gameplay part (such as Zelda TotK, which is wonderful).

Best game of the year. Totally recommend for people looking for a sory-oriebted game with a big, interesting plot. The only thing really bothered me was unstable FPS in performance mode. In some places, like villages or cities it is like I have 30-40 frames, which makes game fill terrible.

Long time fan of the series.

While the combat system and framework of RPG customization mechanics may be an even further departure from even the 7 Remake games (both combat systems being fine with me), I feel the overall package of this game is an excellent entry in the series and deserves acknowledgement as a legitimate entry in the series.

Combat feels fresh and the customization of how you use Clive's Eikonic abilities, in addition to the use of Torgal gives an avenue of player skill expression into how one approaches the game. There is a base level where unfamiliar players can execute basic actions, utilizing abilities on cooldown, and allow the AI to maintain your pet companion. Players desiring to expand their mastery over these systems may look to devising ways to effectively reduce Stagger Bars, timing pet commands mid-combo in ways to debilitate enemies from reacting or extending their combos into impressive strings of aggressive follow-through, culminating in devastating assaults on will-broken enemies. There is room for all types of players with this iteration of a Final Fantasy battle system to enjoy nuance as much as they would like to.

The story maintains a high level of polish for almost the entirety of the playthrough before falling on to some very standard tried-and-true Final Fantasy story beats. The opening of this game and the implementation of the ATL system has allowed me to introduce the series to other players that have never given an FF game a try due to the perception that the stories are complex fantasies with terminology not clearly defined for players without extensive research into data-logs/bestiary entries.

Voice acting and localization is probably the highest quality its been since XII, but that game is a favorite entry of mine. All main characters and adjacent are well written and voiced, making more believable character interactions. This is probably one of the most organic romances I have seen in a final fantasy game in a long while. Side Quest NPCs having an unexpected amount of additional voice acting/cutscenes was also a welcome surprise and I will be expecting this to expand further in future entries.

Soundtrack and sound quality are also on levels that are laudable. Soken did an excellent job with this OST, with tracks during certain sections of the game really lending to the high energy spectacle on screen with genre swaps that will catch you off guard. They fit the scenes they occur in and succeed in shaking up the feeling of the game. The audio design of combat, abilities, and general gameplay are all top-notch quality and expertly delivered.

Visual spectacle in a Final Fantasy game is a no-brainer, from the grim, dark, turbulent world the characters live in, the beautiful and varied vistas you are able to navigate, to the over the top action set pieces, expectations of a feast for the eyes will not be found lacking.

I appreciate CBU3's first outing in a non-MMO mainline game for the series, with their dedication and reverence towards the series found in FFXIV really showing in their presentation of FFXVI. While there are fans that will not accept any other iteration not purely deferential to the original roots of the series, I believe the continued evolution and spirit of the franchise is clearly presented in this game and is worthy of top marks from me. I can only hope that the general reception to this entry is as appreciative as I am towards it, to allow the developers to continue working their craft in future FF games.

9/10- an excellent games for fans with minds open for change as well as newcomers that would like to start somewhere in this wonderful 36-Year expanse of stories and experiences that old veterans of the series vocally cherish.

Final Fantasy XVI is an excellent game in every way. If you're a fan of the series for the stories and characters, you won't go wrong here, and if you've avoided the series for, say, turn-based combat, the sixteenth installment offers the perfect opportunity to get started with this legend of the gaming industry. New numbered FFs are good again. Stunning to look at, with new, punchy combat, and a great yarn, it is, if anything, too focussed, lacking a bit of the weird. [Issue#30, p.78]
