Final Fantasy XVI is the new mainline game in the long running and beloved series from Square Enix. It features some deviations in gameplay from what you would typically expect from a Final Fantasy but remains true to the series central storytelling core.

Developed by Square Enix's Creative Business Unit 3 and helmed by well regarded FFXIV creator Yoshi-P, Final Fantasy XVI tries to set forth on a new style of game, and succeeds where it counts. The series has now seemingly fully transitioned to a more action RPG approach to its combat. This new combat is fast and reactive in a way never really seen before in a Final Fantasy Game. There are active dodge and parry systems built in, aerial moves, and over 32 new "Eikon Abilities" to weave in and out throughout combat encounters. These Eikon abilities add a good layer to the combat but kind of overwhelm it and feel like the only abilities you really use over and over again. The action is cinematic in a way that only the recent God of War games have been able to be. The camera zooms and shifts to showcase Clive in these really stylized visuals when a parry or dodge is timed perfectly. The action is pretty easy and forgiving for the most part. The game gives you a lot of accessibility and tools in game to help new or inexperienced players who are there more for the story than the action. these include ring and trinkets that will, for example, widen the dodge and parry timing considerably, auto consume potions, command your dog sidekick for you, auto charge magic ranged attacks, etc. There are some difficult optional enemies to be found through the hunt board, but even these will not tax a player who is experienced in action RPG gameplay.

But, like all Final Fantasy games, FFXVI is held high by its storytelling and characters. The story follows Clive and his adventure of personal redemption and continental revolution against his own troubled past and that of this new Final Fantasy world, Valisthea. The bones of the story is set up in a very game of thrones mold. There are several different factions on Valisthea who are all vying for varying levels of control and power. These factions are led by Dominants, humans who have been gifted the power to wield the power of and transform into the iconic and standard Final Fantasy summons, Titan, Shive, Bahamut, etc.

The main story is excellently presented, the voice acting is top tier, cinematic cutscenes are filled with intrigue and beautiful scenery. The game is filled with some of the best and most cinematic encounters I can remember in gaming. Particularly a mid to late game encounter between Clive and Dion, the dominant of Bahamut, that literally goes into outer space. This multiple phase fight and ensuing fallout is the best stretch the game has to offer. There is history and purpose in this conflict for all characters involved, leading to an immensely satisfying clash. Eventually, like most Final Fantasy games, the story shifts from its more grounded premise into a world ending threat that must be stopped. It's something that if you are familiar with the series is expected but ultimately disappointing. The final 15% of the game or so does not carry the same weight and intrigue as before.

The game is definitely not without its faults, framerate and visual issues are rare but present, the resolution of the story as mentioned before, but mainly where the game falls flat is its tacked on RPG elements to flesh out the gameplay and scope. In between these grand scale and wonderfully cinematic main story quests and encounters are some pure fluff and less realized quests. They include the always dreaded open world fetch or kill quests which really lack any depth at all. The crafting system is tacked on and lacks any depth or intrigue, it is basically just there to upgrade and create new weapons for Clive, but the gradual expansion of a good crafting system is no where to be found. You find the same materials late game as you did in the opening zones. Leading me to end up with thousands of hides and magic ash that has no use. They can be sold for money but there is nothing to spend the money on besides potions and audio reels for the main hideaway where you spend most of your time. The side quests range from paper thin to effective and engaging world building adventures, with no real way to decipher which one you are getting into. The first side quest literally has you grab some wood from nearby and bring it back to the quest giver.

Overall, the game was an extremely fun and pleasant experience, if a little unfocused in what it truly wanted to be.

Final Fantasy XVI makes a bold attempt to rejuvenate the series, delivering an emotionally gripping narrative that leaves a lasting impact. The game's combat system is nothing short of phenomenal, offering a fresh and exhilarating experience that challenges and rewards players in equal measure.

However, one cannot overlook the shortcomings in the side quests which unfortunately feel repetitive and lack the depth that would make them truly engaging. Similarly, the game's open-world zones could benefit from more rich and intricate detail to alleviate their stark emptiness.

On the topic of customization, an additional layer could have been added by providing players the option to tailor Clive's armor. Much like how the aesthetics of weapons evolve throughout the game, a similar feature for armors would have greatly enriched the immersive gaming experience.

In keeping with tradition, Final Fantasy XVI boasts a spectacular and epic soundtrack that significantly enhances the overall atmosphere of the game.

Despite certain areas for improvement, Final Fantasy XVI is an outstanding action RPG that will quickly become a must-have for any PS5 owner.

This is probably the greatest Final Fantasy game I've played since the FF6 through FF10 block of games and I think deserves a place in the Top 4 of all Final Fantasy titles. Great narrative, memorable protagonists and villains, iconic boss battles that will blow your mind, incredible OST, and a fun new gameplay system that surprisingly works. Required playing for any RPG fan.

The developers had been saying they want to make an action game in stead of normal jrpg game for the longest time so I dont really see what the fuss is about. The down side of the game mainly lie with the exploration and the linear gear progression. The exploration is just **** most of the time you have no reason to stray off the main path because there is nothing for you to find and when it does, it barely worths anything. With that being said, the story, characters, and combat is more than enough to be able to make up for it's horrible downfall. And Eikon battle is what stuck out the most for me, also the ending is just beautiful, probably the best ending I have seen in a long while. In the end, no game is perfext and FF16 is no exception, however what it does good it does great and for me that is more than enough to make a great game. Hopefully the DLC can fix its problem.

Side missions are a great way to see more of the world, but they are repetitive and boring after a while—great story, very grounded and dark with specific themes. One of my favorite parts of the game was explaining the branded and the quests. Overall good game but after one playthrough, I felt that's all you need. Expand

Amazing game overall, one of the best FFs I have ever played, I’m glad square allowed a grimmer fantasy twist to the story than in previous games. Don’t expect an open world RPG. This is a very linear game, so just enjoy it for what it is. I would have given it 10 stars if the enemies were more challenging and the item/weapon upgrades weren’t as linear as the story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game tells a great story, and it does it in a visually stunning way. I cannot think of any modern game that does spectacle combat as well as FF16 does. Underneath that, however, is a really shallow game. The combat receiving so much praise has felt strange to me, because while it is beautiful and bombastic, it’s flawed in design. The stagger system encourages you to *not* use your abilities until your enemy is staggered, due to the often long cooldown times. So during boss fights, you will find yourself just smacking the boss with your sword forever while you chip away at their stagger bar so you can drop all of your big abilities at once. Rinse and repeat usually 2-3 times before the boss dies.

The Eikon combat feels even more shallow, offering basically no challenge and instead serving as eye candy while you press one button over and over, occasionally dodging attacks or charging to the enemy. There’s no room for customization here, and I can’t help but feel like this could’ve been something more than a spectacle.

The game feels like it’s teetering on the edge of being an action game and an RPG, but ends up lukewarm in both regards. The RPG elements are mediocre at best, and they feel sacrificed to transform the game into an action game, but it feels like they were hesitant to make the game challenging in that regard, and it suffers as a result. The shallow RPG elements, the lack of agency on how you build your character, and the flashy but simple combat keeps the majority of the game feeling like a chore to carry you from plot point to plot point, because the plot is the only thing holding this game up. It’s fantastic, with lots of twists and turns up until the very end. Unfortunately those amazing cutscenes keep getting interrupted by mediocre combat and long hallways full of forgettable enemies. The side quests feel so bland and chore-like, I can’t help but feel that the game would’ve been better off without them. There’s a few decent stories hidden in there, but across 50+ side quests, only about 10 of them felt worth doing, not including the ones that directly benefited Clive with upgrades and such. For the most part, they fall flat. I beat the game less than 12 hours ago and honestly cannot remember the majority of them.

If you’re into a good narrative experience and don’t care how you get there, you will love this game. If you enjoy a challenge or the RPG elements that have been present in most numbered FF games to date, this game is gonna disappoint you. It feels like playing a movie.

A great game. One I strongly recommend. Has the best boss fights in the final fantasy franchise and has a very heartfelt and emotional story. The M rating of he game allowed devs to go more in depth on topics like genocide and Slavery.

Its definitely a final fantasy game. The only downside is that AI partners aren't as provocative as I would like. Definitely GOTY

Genuinely one of the best games that I've ever played. Sure there are valid criticisms I've seen that I somewhat agree with, story pacing, overall performance issues, etc., but when I look at the game as a whole, it's truly something special. The music is fantastic, the story is gripping, the characters are lovable and the bosses are magnificent. Can't say enough good about this game.

I was worried that this game would end up being a disappointment. But, 67 hours later and I finally beat FFXVI. Naturally, I would feel good about something like this, but I was just sobbing, the ending made me realize how I was very connected with the characters, each of them with their back stories. That what is a Final Fantasy truly is, feeling connected to the characters and the world itself. Speaking of the world, they pulled off the aspect of world building extremely well. The political powers and beliefs, and the lore dating back to the very dawn of this world. It was as if they were drip feeding us information, and that pacing was perfect for something of this scale. Me personally, I wouldn't like it when they dump bunch of information at the beginning. When the world was presented to me in the demo content, I kept asking, what is this, why is this happening, how did it happen, where, when? And all of these questions I had from the beginning eventually got answered. I loved it when they already set the bar up high in the demo content, then they decided to break that bar immediately after the demo content, then another one is set in, but yet they break that bar. It just keep on going until the very end. A truly roller coaster of emotions. Overall, I'd say, Final Fantasy XVI is the ultimate Final Fantasy experience for any beginners and the old hardcore fans. I think this game is a banger when it comes to game experience. Eikon battle is breathtaking and never felt so intense playing game before. Also, the music, it is amazing, it fits so well with the game scenes. I`m not sure if I will play the second round but definitely getting DLC if it comes out. My only advice is, play the game yourself, demo is out there for free. You must experience this game yourself and if its not your type, that`s totally understandable but never `not` play this the game because of mixed reviews.

I Don't know if it's just me but I also feel like all enemies felt the same, only divided in 2 categories, big enemies and small enemies, I never found myself forced to adopt a new strategy during a fight, I just combod the same attacks against every enemy, and it worked, aaaand at last a very disappointing thing for me were the eikon fights, just gimmicky and laughably easy, clearly meant to look cool rather than to be a mechanic.
I guess the experience in general wasn't too awful but it was carried by the outstanding narrative, everything else felt very underwhelming.

This however can be overlooked since the other elements of the story as I said are pretty great. We are no FFX level of writing but this Is more than enough.
    2) The combat system is also great. You can tell this was made by action- games veterans like Suzuki who know what they are doing and know what makes a good action- game. My main problem would be the difficulty but FF games have never been super difficult and so this doesn't bother me that much personally. The lack of significant RPG elements could also be a let down, but I was expecting It anyway. Overall if they can tweak the difficulty with future patches than this could became the best battle system of amy FF game ever.
    3) Exploration and side quest: this is the weak point of this game. Don't go in expecting much from this department: there is nothing here. The exploration Is better than FF13 at least but that's not saying much. The game is mostly Linear during the dungeons and than there are FF12 -style open areas in between. The problem is that in those areas most of the time there really is nothing of interest to be found( there are exceptions) except crafting materials. Regarding the side quest I didn't do them because I don't have patience but I heard they are garbage from a gameplay standpoint but good if you want to know more of the world, characters ecc... so make of that information what you will.
Conclusions: this game is not perfect in fact It has many flaws but it's the First FF since 12 that feels complete and coherent with itself. If you are an old FF fan that has lost faith in the series after the many flops of recent years, please try this game. It's not one of the best FF games out there but it's certanly not bad or one of the worst.

The combat is flashy but once you find the combo that works for you it gets repetitive and boring and I found myself avoiding battles while traveling because I would rather use my time and combos on storyline battles. I do think this is a problem with it being single character focused and if they had done stories and battles with other party characters (Jill, Jonathan, Cid) it might have kept it a bit fresher.
