FFXVI is more movie than game.
No other FF game comes close to how little gameplay there is.

No other FF game comes close to how little gameplay there is.

It feels like nothing is progressing, many, many sequences, lots of meaningless chatter. As mentioned here before: the exaggerated action scenes conceal the lack of substance, and I find them very unspectacular.

There was one sequence that somehow got to me, but then this fight is abruptly interrupted without any further explanation, and everyone just goes their separate ways?

Everything seems to be running smoothly, no one clashes with anyone else, there is hardly any interaction between them, just... somehow completely boring chatter. Honestly, for me, it's unfortunately exhausting. If it weren't for Final Fantasy being at the top, I would have already turned off the game and watched the story in a short 5-minute YouTube video; that's all it would be.

The atmosphere barely grabs me, and despite the beautiful design, the landscapes are... meh, I simply don't feel anything. They can't even make the clouds move :~P. Even with a day/night cycle, it seems they had to cut corners.

The combo system feels like it's only progressing slowly. I'm still using the same effective combo, but now there are two Esper abilities with long cooldowns added, much like MMORPGs such as FF14.

The character Clive himself is also so boring and doesn't convince me at all. Apparently, it's normal for him to duel head-to-head with Espers (without abilities), while on the battlefield, all the soldiers are instantly massacred (by the way, the Domini can destroy an entire army instantly... why even have cannon fodder? Because of action and stuff?). It's nice that he has noble combat training, but as a player, that doesn't convince me why he has to throw himself into every melee without fear (and is convinced he will win? Espers are not an issue, but with a Dragoon, we have to catch our breath). I'd prefer useful and logical abilities that are more immersive than him already being a 'machine' instantly, and everyone finds it normal with Clive, blessing or no blessing.

The world hardly invites exploration, the things you find couldn't be more uninteresting, and even the item system itself is very limited. There isn't much choice, not much to try. Instead of getting new things, everything is just +1, +2, +3, which seems to save resources, time, and creativity.

Oh yeah, after an important story progression, the main quest tells me to get new armor from the old lady... but due to said progression, I already have the best armor (even purple rarity) available, and the old lady doesn't have anything even remotely better.

The fact that you can only play as one character makes the gameplay itself unfortunately very monotonous, and did it really take so much time to develop just around one character? The locations are enclosed areas, scripted, and even on the ground, Clive's animation sometimes looks very clunky.

The enemies seem uninteresting and interchangeable. The side quests are the same old rubbish as every mediocre RPG these days. What Ubisoft dominates with its 1000 markers on the map, meaninglessly completing incomprehensible side quests is the dominant feature of RPGs without exception.

And the most important thing that has been missing since FF13: an outstanding soundtrack. A big part of the FF series was always its magnificent soundtrack, which one nostalgically listens to even today and fondly remembers the old parts. Music is an absolute component of a game if it wants to be remembered for a long time

I've played games that failed to run at a consistent framerate, but experiencing often drops from 60fps to something like 42 and even 29 is where I draw the line. Sadly the image quality suffers too, from the very aggressive dynamic resolution implementation, the image appears blurry and muddy. As a long time FF fan, I say skip this one. This is a very shallow RPG. It strips out many RPG elements like items, status effects, elemental effects, party control, shallow mmo-like sidequest design, etc. In a desperate ploy to attract call of duty players and gta "modern gamers" this game just ends up being even more polarizing then FFXV A

For all the hype around the DMC combat designer the combat is not good enough and doesn't go deep enough to be enjoyable. The combat just doesn't go deep enough and offer enough.

Enemies are either too easy (normal mobs) or boring (too much health but no challenge).

The same few monster types repeat over and over and over.

The world is... empty? Like it's FF13 all over again. Sure there are huge areas but they have no purpose. There is nothing to discorver, hardly anything to do. If you are lucky there is a treasure chest somewhere which 99% of the time alone contain crap mats you already have 1000s of.

All side quests are kill x or collect flowers and 99% of them don't tell an interesting story.

The crafting system is a joke. Every few chapters you get the newest items, no farming needed ever if you have been killing monsters (besides the 3 best items in the game, which are also more or less handed to you).

The world as such and the people in it are mostly a..holes. There is no nuance. Everybody either helps "Cid" or is against you. It's all black and white.

The graphics are nice but too close to FF XIV, same goes for their overall design and aesthetic. That's of course personal taste but I hate it.

I will stop here but I definitely feel this game has a lot of issues and flaws and doesn't deserve the high rating it received. It's not bad but it's definitely not great.

There is of course some great stuff in this game. The story at points is awesome. Graphics are mostly good. The soundtrack is amazing. Some boss fights are insane (but way tooo long).

However for every high and Woah! that was insane there are such deep lows... when i finished the game I was more annoyed and happy to be done with it more than anything else.

Visually beautiful, FF16 fails like so many other console games in terms of accessibility. Controller mapping type A, B, or C is a slap in the face to anyone who relies on mapping actions.

The world might not be as empty as FF15, but still feels quite empty and doesn't help distract from the sense of linearity. Cutscenes are excessive and are definitely huge problems in the Eikon transitions. It's made worse by the QTEs in said fights. It looks amazing, but the style over substance makes for poor gameplay.

I don't even know where to start. Let it be said, I am a huge Final Fantasy fan and have played them all. My favorite video game series. So it almost hurts to give a warning for this game.
At least, if you're expecting a Final Fantasy. Sure, the series has evolved, and I'm not expecting a turn-based battle system or who knows how many other traditional things of the series here. But what is served up here is simply disappointing.
I would just like to point out some of the biggest criticisms.
    - Graphics not worthy of a PS5. The performance mode can't even hold the 60 FPS. There are always beautiful sceneries, but overall character models very often look wooden, faces mask-like, and the environments poor in detail, gray and boring
    - they tried GOT but its just boring, confusing
    - battles are unbalanced. Exp is worthless. Sometimes easy enemies of from an 2 minute fight give more exp than a Boss fight. Leveling is useless.
    - No humor anymore, what Final Fantasy has always been about
    - the world is for the most part simply inspired by the Middle Ages. No more own newly created fantasy worlds like in the other parts. No effort has been made here. You constantly walk through some ugly castles, it's just sad. Many cities look the same, just gray and dreary. - In the game there is just fighting, and the opponents endure so much, so that such a fight just lasts a quarter of an hour. "Bullet Sponge" is what they call it in shooters. Then comes another eternal sequence and you can run around for five minutes. Fighting, watching eternally long sequences. No tactics are necessary, just stamina because the enemies have no end of life force. Just press the buttons, dodge boss enemies sometimes. Sometimes you get the feeling that they wanted to use the Souls series, which is in no way successful.
    - I personally couldn't sympathize with any of the protagonists.
    - German synchronization seems inappropriate. Lips out of sync and sometimes the character's mouth doesn't move at all when someone speaks. I don't expect this in a multimillion dollar game from Square Enix called Final Fantasy.
    - the game "moves" funny. It all kind of reminds me more of a Double A game. A lot of it seems unpolished. You can also see the origins of the developer who made the Final Fantasy 14 online role-playing game.

On the positive side, I can say that the story is sometimes interesting, and you want to know more. Also, some of the staging seems cool, though at the same time completely over-the-top and silly and more reminiscent of a monster beat em up game.

The short version of the conclusion is that it is simply an action game, without having anything to do with a role-playing game or Final Fantasy. If you just want fat action and bombast, you might be satisfied, but then often annoyed by the sometimes simply eternal cutscenes, which are also kind of boring.

I can only wonder what FF17 is going to be like if this is a hit. Will we be calling in air strikes and attack dogs? Maybe shooting hookers? I really think I'd rather be playing FF13

First of all, I don't mind the shift to action as long as it's done right. Take FF7R as example, although a more action-oriented it still kept the essence of FF series including strategy and allowing players to stop and think when things get more complex. Unfortunately, FF16 battle-system lacks depth and challenge. It is a combat formula that requires little to no thought process and thus become monotonous rather quickly.

I still had a lot of fun with FF16. There are vast moments of awe with stunning boss battles, some exciting Eikon fights and cutscenes. The game is surely intended to be a visual spectacle and it indeed achieves on that. The soundtrack is amazing as expected from a Final Fantasy game.

However, as a hardcore FF fan I can't help to be less critic about what I would expect from a FF mainline game.

In FF16 we have an intriguing cast of characters with complex backgrounds, but regrettably underutilized. With no group party, you're spending the greater part of the story playing with a single character accompanied by a dog. As cute as it sounds, in the other hand you don't get too emotionally attached to the characters as they don't accompany you during most part of your journey.

RPG elements like secret dungeons, interesting equipment, and elemental spells are absent, leaving exploration and character progression feeling shallow. You will never find anything interesting within chests as the best equipment are made by the blacksmith. There are no secret dungeons with secret bosses that would reward you some set upgrade or special items. Talking about items the only ones you'll use in this game are Potions and High-Potions, there are no Phoenix Down as there are no party members, no Antidotes as there are no status effects like poison or haste or anything similar. Therefore, there is no incentive at all to detour your linear path and waste a lot of your time exploring an empty environment just for additional crafting material that you will never use.

The boss fights are a visual spectacle as mentioned, but in the end, it feels more like a missed opportunity as they mostly drag out too long and present no real challenge. I wish they'd allowed the hardest difficult to be played since the beginning to make these fights a little more interesting.

FF16 leaves me feeling that it would fit better as a spinoff rather than a mainline game. I don't mind the experimentation but if this is the formula intended moving forward than as a hardcore fan it gets me worried about the future of the series. In the end it feels the gameplay are just there to fill the gap between a movie and a game, because that's ultimately what FF16 feels like, a huge movie with a lot of filler battles in between.

Fighting a boss with a new mechanic, well let's just explain how to do that mechanic even though you've done a similar one before...but this ones a different button.

The button mashing isn't all that bad in my opinion, but the abilities leave a lot to be desired. From what I've seen they have 1-2 tiers aside from not learned. I can't imagine there's more since they always say "MASTERED" at what I assume to be the final level of the ability. It does have a variety of things to learn as you go through the game though, gaining more to learn as you get through the story.

I enjoy story based games with a lot of cinematic stuff for me to watch, but many people don't want this and I can see why others are upset about it. I do enjoy the cinematics but even I have to say they probably should have eased up on them and given more gameplay.

I saw someone else compare the levels to FF XIII's hallway levels, and I don't disagree. Though these feel worse. At least in XIII there were small pathways that made it more maze-like. This just has big obstacles that you go around.

The FPS is terrible. I have the game set to prioritize framerate and it still feels like it's running around 30-40FPS most of the time. I have the game running from the internal SSD in the Ps5, there is no reason this game should not be running at the very least 60FPS almost constantly. Instead, I have the complete opposite.

I like the story a lot when it's not being interrupted by tutorials, but it doesn't entirely feel like an FF series game. At the same time that's not a bad thing, it's much more adult themed and less kid friendly.

If this game was released as another title without all of the FF theme's we're used to it would have been a flop. The only reason I want to even finish it is my love for the series and the hope I'm clinging to that it will improve and the tutorials will eventually stop.

All the time used for making the shiny particles for the cinematics battle should have better used to create an actual game, instead of a movie with qte
Adding the cringe plot and the absolutely linearity of the whole game, I can safely suggest you to just avoid, and don't waste any minute of your time with this

As a long time fan of ff and long time xiv player i tried not to go in with my hopes too high.
But once again CB3 has delivered another excellent entry.
While the story and some side quests can be a snooze, the highs outweigh anything else. The boss fights were spectacular each felt like a final boss in itself. Soken also delivered once again on the ost and i cannot wait till it

I am looking forward to the future of the series and any updates to xvi they decide to make

This is the worst Final Fantasy game I've played
    And I've played them all.
If I have to say what are the biggest issue with this, the easy button smashing gameplay is probably the biggest. Especially considering the fact that it's an action. The other issue are definitely the boring plot and the literally 0 exploration, a criminal sin on my point of view. It's not worth your time and I

It's not worth your time and I feel scammed by the marketing moves made by Square Enix for this forgettable trash

Final Fantasy XVI is an excellent game in every way. If you're a fan of the series for the stories and characters, you won't go wrong here, and if you've avoided the series for, say, turn-based combat, the sixteenth installment offers the perfect opportunity to get started with this legend of the gaming industry. This is a solid RPG/action game. Some elements of the game are unusual and fresh for single-player parts of the Final Fantasy series, but some are too dull and rudimentary.

New numbered FFs are good again. Stunning to look at, with new, punchy combat, and a great yarn, it is, if anything, too focussed, lacking a bit of the weird. [Issue#30, p.78]
