Generic & mediocre overly easy action game unworthy of the Final Fantasy brand. Minimal at best RPG mechanics, generic action gameplay, lack of spells & anything present in games from the same franchise from over 20 years ago.

Final Fantasy XVI is not a good game. It is representative of a cynical, lowest-common-denominator approach to game development--the ultimate expression of flash over substance.

I've been playing FF games since the NES, and have enjoyed the development of the series over time. The recent action-hybrid system in FF7 Remake, for example, was a particularly good innovation that built upon the successes of the past. XVI, however, abandons the past in order to chase after an entirely different gaming audience. The developers have betrayed their own fanbase, cynically concluding both that their old fans will buy the game anyway, and the new audience will be bigger.

The problem is that XVI doesn't even succeed at what it is trying to be. As an action game it lacks combat depth, and it is very rudimentary and simplistic. Anything even slightly challenging would frustrate the so-called game journalists and lead to lower reviews, so players are treated to the most repetitive, basic combat available in any modern action game, paired with a complete absence of difficulty. The summon battles are even more unsophisticated, playing out like a two-button rail shooter. The very basic QTEs shoe-horned in throughout the game add to the sense that the developers have no new ideas.

In addition, the developers seem to have cottoned on to the idea that 'mature' means copy-pasting from Game of Thrones. After all, GoT is popular, just like action games. Sometimes, the blatant ripping off of GoT content is so ridiculous as to be laughable, but mostly it comes across as extraordinarily cringe-inducing. This would not be such a big deal if the game were not convinced that it is an HBO miniseries instead of a game. Be prepared to actually 'play' the game for only 15 minutes out of every hour spent with it. The cutscenes are continuous and relentless. But given how dreadful the combat is, perhaps the interminable cutscenes will be a welcome relief.

Pacing is simply awful, and the towns themselves are reduced to linear paths with NPCs along the side, to say nothing of the dungeons which are even less interesting. There are no places to explore, no treasures to be found in hidden areas, and the sidequests are creatively bankrupt, straight out of the WoW playbook. The storyline goes to pieces in the latter half of the game, and the final boss and conclusion are ridiculous and unfulfilling. The game adds a more challenging NG+ mode after completion, but it's hard to believe anyone would voluntarily play through it again after knowing that the latter portion of the game offers nothing.

The music and voice acting are both solid and even good in places. Neither is quite top-shelf but both are serviceable, let down by writing, pacing, and setting more than by execution. But these few bright points are obviously not enough to carry the game.

In the end, a lot of money spent on buying favourable impressions might lead to some people buying this game unaware of just what they're going to get. But, if they've any sense, they won't make that mistake twice: this game really will be their *Final* Fantasy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is not a RPG, there are no party members, the only different roles are what skills are equipped which is used in any type of action/adventure game these days, Square Enix has lost what made Final Fantasy special which can be seen by it losing ground to other less known brands like Monster Hunter, Persona Series. Those games have focused on gameplay and being innovative instead of graphics and being like everyone else cough Devil May Cry cough. Also did not enjoy all the needless cutscenes which should only be there for the major story elements, for example this game has over 20 hours of cutscenes vs FFX's 6 hours which did it alot better and more meaningful. Areas are pretty and monsters clearly FF14 monster designs. Makes the world feel "Final Fantasy"

Not for People who expect this to be a 2D Bird-perspective JRPG from the 90s. Those times are over. Theres MANY!! rpgmaker games you can buy on steam if you want that experience - or beat the ones you havent beaten from your childhood.

Its a 9/10 as a game for me. As a Final Fantasy it would probably get a bit less since I am not the biggest fan of the game of thrones storyline, but as a game its solid and fun to play. Keeps me going and wants me to see the story to an end.

Edit couple days later: OK, its a 10/10. Game becomes better and better and better and there is not much I would like this game to be more. Its exactly what a Story driven Adventure should be. GOOD GAME

FFXVI might be a good game and it could have been beautiful but its image reconstruction turned out extremely ugly and the game stutters as hell. In 2023, there are too many great games running smoothly out there, so there is no need to play such a stutter fest. I will sell it again. Too bad.

    - pretty graphics
    - fantastic music
    - good sound effects and voice acting
    - pretty cutscenes (a good thing in this movie game for sure)

    The cons:
    - WAY too many cutscenes/movieclips
    - combat is childlike easy
    - loading/popins
    - super boring repetitive side quests
    - uneven frame refresh in open world

Lets be frank: this isn't a game. It's a game of thrones ripoff cinematic story with a few action combat scenes that you control.

There's basically no exploration. You maybe play 1/7th of the actual the game. The rest is cut scenes. Combat is over simplified... So much that it's impossible to die. Weirdly, you can make the game even easier by adding newbie rings... No clue why you would.

There's so bad arse cut scenes with some big things that you basically hit r1 or square.... And these cut scenes battles take WAY TOO LONG.

If I have to hit x then hold r2 to open another door I'm going to throw the game in the trash. Any reason a dev does something like this is: they are daft and lack any knowledge of gaming.

Equipment is stupid- you just buy new crap everytime you go to a town.. no real variety or even a need to update your gear. It's thoughtless. Yes, the graphics are good 90% of the time. Sometimes the character models drop textures - super weird.

    Voice acting is mostly good....

The graphics are great and the story is alright, but that's all it has going for it.

While the graphics are impressive, much (not all) of the aesthetics are quite boring when compared to older entries. Many very standard medieval buildings. So standard they might come from an online asset pack. Some vistas are great, as well as some dungeons. The combat system is not nearly as deep

While the graphics are impressive, much (not all) of the aesthetics are quite boring when compared to older entries. Many very standard medieval buildings. So standard they might come from an online asset pack. Some vistas are great, as well as some dungeons.

The combat system is not nearly as deep as people make it out to be. Normal enemies are a cake-walk, so while you might come up with combos, they're dead before you even finish them. Boss enemies generally can't be juggled, so they can't be comboed. It basically becomes a game of dodge, attack, dodge, attack. Initially you'll use high stagger moves, then when staggered you start off with a multi-hit move to build up combo and then spam all the skills to do the highest damage. In the end it's just a rotation. It's fun, but we've seen better.

Side-quests are boring, the game would be better without them. Old FF games did not really have that many side-quests and what was there was more interesting in terms of characters and reward.

Items are also useless for the most part, which in turn means exploration is meaningless. Yay, more sharp fangs! There are no status effects, so no items to help with that, only a few potions can be brought along and usually they'll drop them right in front of the boss arena. You just never actually have to prepare for anything.

Eikon fights are all about the spectacle. The actual gameplay is worthless.

I'm baffled by how positive the reception has been to a game that has such terrible game design. If you strip away the spectacle, the game itself has nothing going for it anymore. In fact, I think you'll be having more fun just watching the game than playing it. It would just be better as a movie.

This game feels like the death of Final Fantasy.

It's not a JRPG by any measure, and by that I mean that it isn't even an Action JRPG. I have never seen Youtube astroturf a game quite like this one. The presentation is very pretty (despite terrible motion blur and an iffy framerate), and the story is very interesting (so far, I'm ten hours in). The gameplay is terrible though.

You would think that most of the people giving this game a 10 or 9 workers for Sony, this game is just a large CGI movie, you get maybe 5 minutes of gameplay and then 10 minutes of cutscenes, it’s extremely annoying, the dodge system is terrible when you do get into a boss fight, when they said this game has cutscenes longer than the entire lord of the rings trilogy, THEY WEREN”T LYING.

The story is intriguing, but unfortunately the game is rather shallow. The battles can be won by just spamming a few buttons and then unleashing a special move, there are no status ailments, weapon crafting seems to have been an after thought and there isn't a huge variation between the different "stances". I never thought I’d be giving a final fantasy game a bad review in my life. Hell I even loved 15 but this, this thing has been so hard to force myself to get through. Hell I even loved 15 but this, this thing has been so hard to force myself to get through. So, whoever made this game wrote a decent story, made it real pretty, and then it almost feels like they slapped an alpha version of a barebones ARPG on top of it. You’re genuinely only ever a few fights or a couple hundred yards at most away from the next cutscene, it’s frankly jarring just how often they take control away from the player, and half the time it’s to say nothing. And the world is so empty. Now by empty I mean the bestiary is like 38-40 creatures and over half of that is Eikons, some important characters, an owl you only see for a couple minutes, and then the other half are enemies. So essentially when you’re walking around any of these on rails or even semi open stages you’re going to be fighting the same 5-6 enemies for the majority of the game. And there’s geniunely nothing to do except advance the main story. The shinies on the ground on the map? It’s about 2-5 gil, a potion (of which you can only have 7 of ever), or 1-3 crafting mats. Wooden chest on the map? It’s about 100 gil or about 20 crafting mats. Finish a side quest? Oh yeah crafting mats. Boss time oh yeah!! You are rewarded with crafting mats. Major plot enemy or Eikon fight?!?! You guessed it! More crafting mats!!! And thats assuming you can get through all the QTEs they put into every Eikon fight to hide loading times that literally consist of either “press square” or “press R1” and you have like 10 seconds to do it so no rush. And those QTEs will about take care of the last half of their Hp so don’t worry. Did I mention crafting mats? Because you literally barely ever need to use it. You are 100% guaranteed to get the next best weapon from a mat dropped by last chapters boss. There are no status effects, no elemental weaknesses, which I feel like they forgot. Because enemies cast stuff like bad breath, poison mist, etc., you get several elemental spells, but all they do is damage, again no status effects, and in no greater amount than any other spell. It’s….pretty, and the story really tries to stay relevant minus some very weird points it REALLY wants to drive home and some massive plot holes, but it has some really good scenes for sure. But this game only feels like a slightly interactive visual novel with some good boss fights. Better to watch a stream or a YouTube vid because it really just feels like a GoT fan fic movie. Please don’t waste your money. Expand

Not everything is bad if course : Combat is pretty fun and at first glance the visuals are beautiful. I like the art style & the darker tone if this game The cutscenes are of high quality.

However I can't recommend this game. The world is dull and empty, the story gets weird halfway through, MMO-like side quests aren't fun and the loot system is very questionable. It feels a bit like "Game of Thrones : Devil May Cry Edition" but it's very different from previous Final Fantasy games. This game should have gotten a different title.

The performance mode of this game is atrocious : The exploration sequences are a stutterfest barely touching 60fps and dropping into the 30s. In combat resolution drops to 720p and the game becomes very blurry - while still not being able to maintain 60fps. The only way to enjoy this game is in 30fps quality mode.

I should have avoided this release. All those good reviews a few days ago tricked me into giving it a try. I wonder what Square Enix spent to get such misleading scores...
