Final Fantasy 16 is a visual spectacle with fluid but simple combat, epic Boss fights that may be some of the best in any game to date, a masterpiece of a soundtrack, interesting characters and an interesting story/plot that spans both the political side with Empires at odds with each other as well as the magical side which dives into incredible depths of intrigue. The main character, Clive, has quite the Character arc that is bound to keep you interested, as well as the surrounding Characters, each of which have their own, unique and interesting personalities.

The game took me just about 33 Hours focusing mostly on Main Story to complete, and although there is some bloat (main quests that feel like they should have been side quests), the pay off is worth it, as the game continues to develop and lead you to the next big (and often massive) story beat and each grand Boss Fight.

The Boss Fights alone are impressive in scale and visuals, being sure to leave you on the edge of your seat. The Boss Fights include segments that are "cinematic" in nature, having you react to a timed button press or button mashing in which you often return back to the normal combat. The combat itself is simplistic in nature, having an evade button, an attack button, a magic button, a jump button, and then combos and special ability attacks, but it works well, feels satisfying and overall was appealing.

The game has a pretty deep ability tree to unlock new abilities as well as upgrade ones currently unlocked, and gives you the option to reset certain abilities to get some ability points back to focus on others you may use more.

Overall, though not perfect, definitely an incredible game that is a must play and gets a 9/10 from me!
You'd be crazy NOT to play this game!

After about 25 hours, I feel comfortable reviewing. This game is fantastic. I really feel like this is Final Fantasy getting back to it’s roots while simultaneously experimenting in ways to drive the franchise forward. I really feel like this is Final Fantasy getting back to it’s roots while simultaneously experimenting in ways to drive the franchise forward. I grew up with FF4 and FF6, and while this game clearly looks and plays nothing like those two games, it actually follows the formula quite well. It’s almost as if they reimagined a 16bit FF game in a 3D world with action combat. To start on the comment, this is the main reason why I couldn’t consider giving this game a 10 score. While I have a lot of good to say about it - it’s fluid, the controls are tight, it’s flashy and rewarding, they really did a great job with it. The issue is that after about 10 hours you unlock so many abilities that it removes any amount of effort or technicality in any of the battles. They all turn into rush the largest enemy, unload one series of power moves, unload the next series of power moves, unload another series of power moves, the enemy is staggered, then use the overpower mode, and suddenly the challenging enemy is at least 75% dead. This works for almost every single enemy encounter that has a tanky enemy, and the encounters with regular enemies just feel repetitive throughout most of the game. It’s just far too easy of a game. So while the combat is great, it feels like they just kept adding layers on top of a formula that came out of the oven too soon. It would have been nice to have some control over other party members, and the wolf is essentially pretty useless. This is even echoed in the weapon system, there comes a point very early in the game where you have more Gil than you have things to spend it on. The combat is miles better than FF15 and FF7R, but there is so much refining that needs to be done. If it weren’t for the excellent story, I think this may have bored me after 15 hours to the point of putting it down.

So about the story. It’s very busy at first, there are so many moving pieces that try to set the foundation of the lore, but once it starts to connect the dots, man is it good. They do a wonderful job of blending the individual character story lines within the overarching narrative of clashing nations. The flow is executed so well that it’s easy to shift your attention from individual characters story arcs to the overall conflict between nations because they’re both good. As the story progresses, it gets pretty convoluted, but the active time lore helps fill in the blanks, and later on you unlock a system that recaps not only character relationships, but the overall world story. It’s truly a game changer, and they put a lot of effort into it. It will help a lot of the adult gamers who can’t dump 5 hours a day for multiple days in a row by allowing them to get refreshers of what is happening. The only complaint I have about the story is that sometimes the cutscenes make it sound like you’re going on an epic journey to the next place, but then it’s like a 3 minute walk through a marsh you have walked through multiple times already. Just felt odd at times.

Otherwise, the graphics are excellent. Sometimes they are truly breathtaking, other times they look a bit muddy. The music is phenomenal. The voice acting is good, but those dialogue cutscenes are as awkward as ever, I hope that’s the next big overhaul for them. I don’t understand the complaints about the performance, it’s barely noticeable, and yet when you do notice, it’s not a big deal at all. It’s so weird that is where people got hung up on.

All in all, the game is fantastic, but not perfect. I haven’t enjoyed a FF game as much as I enjoyed this one for multiple generations now.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You start off 16 as a Young Clive Rosfield sworn to protect his brother the prince. But when tragedy strikes, and the kingdom falls all is seemed to have been lost for Clive. After a time jump an older Clive still haunted by his past meets Cid. There he hears a plan to destroy the Mother Crystals which provide the world with the ability to use magic. Cid explains that these Mother Crystals are destroying the world by causing the blight. A growing calamity taking over and killing the land. Can Clive escape his past and overcome his greatest regrets to save the world? Final Fantasy 16’s story starts of strong and maintains that strength for it’s entire runtime. While being a little cutscene heavy at times it’s a story that is not only one of the best of the Final Fantasy series but overall, a fantastic story worthy of longtime Final Fantasy fans and newcomers to the series. This doesn’t just go for the main story, however. The dark undertone and plot points can also be felt in some of the unique side quests. While 16 does feature a few of the ever so dreadful fetch quests here and there. 16 also features some pretty dark and overall messed up side quests that just do that much more to engulf you into this world.
16’s combat is fast paced action packed and overall fantastic. It takes the series further from it’s turned based roots and instead has you stringing together powerful Eikonic moves. As Clive progresses in the story, he gains new abilities from different Eikon’s allowing him to unleash devastating combos and create a truly remarkable fighting system. While playing you gain AP which can be used to upgrade and ultimately master these abilities. Once mastered you can switch them out freely and slot them where you see fit. Allowing you to potentially have multiple finishing moves from multiple Eikon’s at your disposal. 16’s combat makes sure you stay on your feet and ready for every fight. Not only do you have regular fights but 16 features Eikon battles. These epic battles see you playing as Ifrit as he attempts to defeat other Eikon’s that he faces. While these battles are just as awesome as they are entertaining, I felt underwhelmed at times by the repetitiveness of the fights. While fighting with Clive I had so many different abilities at my disposal but as Ifrit the added ability here and there didn’t make the fights feel as refreshing as I would like. Don’t get me wrong I loved the Eikon battles and there are a wide variety of difference between them but with how some of the fights can feel as if they are dragging on the lack of abilities became ever more apparent.
16s graphics are also a high point in the series, looking stunning and some of the world settings really pushing forward what we are expecting to see out of a video game. Characters look amazing and enemies are well designed.
The music is also another huge point in the game. Final Fantasy is known for its god tier catalog of amazing melody’s and 16 adds to that catalog with some truly fantastic orchestrated songs which I believe will go into the books for some of the series best music.
Now onto issues, the game is incredibly easy, not only did they give everyone accessibility items that help you play better. Like auto dodging and what not. Even with those unequipped the game was a breeze. Boss fights led to no real challenge. If I struggled in a boss fight and died, I would hit retry only to have the boss come back at close to the health he was when I died and with me having full potions. Uhhh where is the challenge in that. I remember the challenge in 15 defeating the Adamantoise, one small wrong move would mean hours down the drain. But in this there is no looming threat of failure which really took away from what I have always loved about Final Fantasy. That challenging aspect and the reward of saying I did it. The bestiary was another big letdown. The game features maybe 60 different enemy types and out of those 60 is at least 1 or 2 reskins of the same enemies. Also missing huge staples to the series like Cactuars and Tonberries. Seeing the same enemies over and over got repetitive. 16 combines open world and linear gameplay which at times I found to be annoying. Expecting this huge open area just to find that there is nothing to explore. No dungeons or benefit really to me wanting to branch out off the broken path. Sometimes you would see a chest filled with common crafting items or an enemy but there was no real reason for me to explore. As far as performance issues 16 runs fantastic overall I only ran into some motion stuttering in a few places Also, with action-based games like this it is hard to escape this next issue, but camera angles sometimes allow for enemies to get lost, and it seems like I am just spamming attacks at nothing. Other than these issues Final Fantasy 16 is truly a remarkable game and one I could easily recommend.

As someone who only really found out about the series with Final Fantasy 15 but only got into by 7 Remake, I was genuinely excited to play this game and see what it had to offer and honestly for the most part, it not only met my expectations, it EXCEEDED them. This game is what happens when you hire writers from Game of Thrones, combat designers of Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, and someone who could create Attack on Titan and God of War set-pieces all combined to create an experience that I will never forget anytime soon. The first thing I can confidently say is that the game looks so beautiful, I couldn't believe my eyes on what I was looking at so much so that I actually didn't mind that the photo mode was pretty basic, you'll be looking in awe on just how beautiful this game is that you'll constantly want to stop for a quick second and take in the magnificent work of art the developers created. The combat is PHENOMENAL with how easy it is to get into and the spectacle you showcase on-screen is a genuine marvel to look at and it never fails to become engaging and never feels repetitive with how the combat expands further on throughout the game. I'm always a fan of Final Fantasy soundtracks and this game might just be better than even 7 Remake and 15 with how they drive the emotion and stakes so much further than they have any right too causing me to get excited for a fight or what happens next. The story and characters are absolutely extraordinary and kept me hooked onto my seat with how many stakes there were, the emotions it brings, and genuinely how relateable it is since this game never failed to make me want the best for the characters seeing what was going on in the world, the characters are nothing short of beautiful and complex and the performances given by the actors only elevate them to some of the best characters I've seen in a video game, the Active Time Lore is easily one of the most revolutionary features I've seen in a video game since it helps you keep track of the story progress and especially helpful if you don't have a lot of time to play games to give you a recap on the story so far if you haven't played in a long time. People say the side quests are awful since they're so simplistic fetch quests but that just makes me feel like they never tried them since this is only the case for 30% of the side quests, everything else is surprisingly good side quests to flesh out the side characters more. Now you may be thinking, "Didn't you hate Dead Space 3's side quests when they did the same thing?" True, but those side quests focused on a MAIN character and you can't skip them otherwise you'll have no idea why the second main character even exists whereas FF16's focuses on the side characters and the game already tells you why they're here so you only want to do their side quests because you want to learn more from these side characters. Finally, probably the game's biggest highlight: the Eikon battles. These battles are a masterclass in spectacle and it feels so immersive and cinematic watching them in action and the fact they get better as you go on just increases the replayibility, people might hate the overly generous QTE's but tbh, QTE's are kind've a thing of the past and failing them is more annoying than anything since it always felt like a cheap trick to get you to pay attention so I genuinely didn't mind the generous QTE's. Now as much as I genuinely love this game, this game does have some problems to the point where I can't call it a masterpiece. For starters, some of the main story quests feel like shoved side quests to relieve you of the insane battles but come on SE, did they really have to be this boring to the point where it breaks the pacing? I wouldn't say the performance is as bad as people say it is since during gameplay and cutscenes, it's a locked frame-rate so you aren't distracted by it but other times, you can ABSOLUTELY see the bad frame pacing and here's hoping they fix it eventually. Finally, it wasn't that hard on my first playthrough nor on my second, I get that the director wanted to make the game more accessible to more people, but at least have an option where we want to feel challenged. With all that being said, I still enjoyed my time with Final Fantasy 16 that I actually didn't mind doing another playthrough for the platinum trophy and this is a story I have no doubt will remain with me for years to come and if you can get through the pacing and frame-rate problems, you'll no doubt love this game. As it stands, Final Fantasy 16 is my GOTY and can't wait to see the franchise move forward and also, PLEASE MAKE SOME DLC FOR SOME OF THE CHARACTERS SQUARE ENIX. Expand

I'm loving this game. It makes me sad so many fans don't see how beautiful and with hos much love this game is created. I'm enjoying every minute of it and will probably play it from start to finish a few times more. I like it a lot better than the final fantasy vii remake. I'm still the biggest fan of Final Fantasy IX. But this one comes close to my all time favorite.

The only negative I would say is that the exploration isn’t really here to provide a meaningful gaming experience it only serves to get from point A to B and places to hold hunts/side quests. That said the series has never had a strong exploration aspect, and I go look for that in other games where exploration is the main aspect of the experience.

I never play once game wishing it could fulfill all aspects of gaming and no one should either. You are just setting yourself up for disappointment and will be unable to enjoy anything.

As an rpg this game was really unwhelming honestly because of how little customization there was in building your characters or lack of any real influence over your party set up or party members. But as an action game this game really slapped. Like this easily the best 3D hack n slash action since DMC 5 came out. The mechanics felt good to use, I alway felt like I was in control, the ekion abilities were basically this games style switching and those leg do all kinds of cool moves that really rewarded skillful play if you actually spent the time to learn how use them properly. My favorite ekion to use was probably Titan because it really require good timing to use tho shiva was also fun to use for the same reasons. My only real criticisms with this game is the its pacing/ length, it took me 37 hours to clear this game when personally I think this game would have been better if it was 8-10 hours shorter due to fact that you go long periods of time without learning new moves which really hurt at the beginning of the game and also was impacted by how little variety there was in this games gameplay loop. This game is nothing but fighting and town exploration and not much else. Like there aren’t any mini games, real dungeons with actual puzzles or gimmicks to mess around with, just more enemies to fight which is certainly way to design a game. But inspire of how repetitive this game could be at times I still loved it in the end and that was mainly due to how fun the combat, this games trully EPIC BOSS FIGHTS, it’s actually surprising pretty well written and engaging story. Like boss fights were really fun and well designed and varied. The big ekion battles were genuinely epic and some most enjoyable boss fights I’ve experienced in a video game and had more going on just spectacle they actually required some skill to get through especially some of fights in the second half of the game. No spoilers but The story actually hits pretty hard and is actually well done, it even got me shed a tear at the end. One last thing soundtrack is LEGENDARY, nuff said. 9/10 Expand

The frames will be patched. The animations aren’t unlike most AAA games right now. The combat provides so much depth. Every ability has some hidden quirk to it that if employed just right, will make you say “woah”. Different abilities have different abilities and the enemy variety will have you finding new ways to defeat them without ever making your arsenal feel stale. The scenes are perfectly acted with the right emotions, music to accompany them, and scenarios that will have you stressed out, shocked, happy, or vengeful. It’s very well done. When you’re thrown into a fight the game makes you feel the excitement before it, then rewards you with a great set piece afterwards. To those that don’t like tons of dialogue, why would you buy a game like this then complain afterwards??
Without dialogue the world doesn’t build. The stakes aren’t defined. The interpersonal relationships and social issues the game wants to explore aren’t explored….. plus…. There’s a skip cutscene option. The amount of enemy variety is nuts. There were more enemies than I expected. Some fights I didn’t even expect to happen. As they say it’s “easy to learn, hard to master,” but I’ll definitely be playing Final Fantasy Mode to see how well I can do. Literally everything I expected, plus way more than I asked for.

As a huge Final Fantasy fan, with FF7 always being the best, I also think FF16 is a great game.

Only have 20 hours into the game, but it's a good story and entertaining game mechanics.

If there is something to complain about, it is the performance mode, which has big dips. And that it is not possible to turn off motion blur.
It's still clearly playable, but therefore not 10/10 either.

The boss fights and hunts are challenging by mechanics without going too much overboard, giving multiple adrenaline rushes to the player. The ability to adjust play style and combos based on abilities offered as more AP are earned, is another big plus. Soundtrack is definetly top tier, as well as the large area and linear narrative with no totally open world roaming in favour of the storytelling. Speaking of the narrative, this game contains a lot of cutscenes both inside and outside battles, helping it amplify immersion without the need of all out open worlds just for the sake of it.

Negative aspects would be the side quests, although providing a clearer picture of the politics and the land of Valisthea in a good manner, they are not rewarding beyond giving more insight into the lore. Also, the character is barely customizable beyond buying/upgrading gears and gaining more abilities from the ability board, which sometimes makes this aspect less interesting than it needs to be.

But all in all, a 9/10 definetly. Although it misses a few marks mentioned above, it really doesn't become boring when other aspects make up for it. This is clearly a game which was created with much passion in its attempt to bring something new to the Final Fantasy franchise and to satisfy a broader audience, while putting its full focus on the narrative.

For people who put great story first and gameplay second, FFXVI is a good addition to our collection.

The graphics are some of the best there is especially in the final stages and boss battles where the linear levels seem to allow for some amazing visuals that is unfortunately missing in the open world in which 90% of the game takes place. The story is beyond perfect, from the very first time we got our hands on the demo, we knew this was going to be special and I am so happy it was. The highs of this game are beyond anything that has been done in video games and for that reason, I believe this is a must have experience Expand

FF16 is my game of the year so far in 2023 and I give it a 9/10.

Final Fantasy 16 is the latest entry in the long-running and beloved RPG series from Square Enix. It is a game that tries to balance the old and the new.

The game’s story is set in the world of Valisthea, a land divided by six nations that are powered by giant crystals called Mothercrystals. Each nation has a special person called a Dominant, who can summon and control a powerful beast called an Eikon. The game’s protagonist is Clive Rosfield, a former prince of Rosaria and the older brother of Joshua, the Dominant of Phoenix. Clive’s life is turned upside down when his kingdom is attacked by Ifrit, the Eikon of Fire, who kills his father and scars him with a mysterious mark. Clive then embarks on a quest for revenge, joining forces with his childhood friend Jill and a charismatic rebel leader named Cid.

The game’s story spans several decades and covers multiple perspectives, as Clive and his allies face various enemies and challenges in their journey. The story is full of twists and turns, betrayals and revelations, tragedies and triumphs. It is also full of memorable characters, both heroes and villains, who have their own motivations and personalities. The game’s voice acting is superb, especially for Clive (Ben Starr) and Cid (Ralph Ineson). The game’s soundtrack, composed by Masayoshi Soken, is also excellent, featuring a mix of orchestral, rock, and electronic music that fits the mood and tone of each scene.

The game’s combat system is one of its strongest points. It is an action-based system that requires fast reflexes and strategic thinking. Clive can use various weapons, such as swords, daggers, axes, and spears, each with their own movesets and combos. He can also use magic abilities that are derived from the Eikons he encounters, such as fire, ice, lightning, earth, wind, and water. He can switch between weapons and magic on the fly, creating dynamic and fluid combat scenarios. He can also dodge, parry, block, and counter enemy attacks, adding more depth and challenge to the combat.

The game’s combat system also features an innovative mechanic called Active Time Lore (ATL), which allows Clive to access information about the enemies he faces, such as their weaknesses, resistances, behaviors, and lore. This information can help Clive to exploit their vulnerabilities or avoid their strengths. ATL also allows Clive to interact with the environment during combat, such as using objects as weapons or cover, or triggering environmental hazards or events that can affect the battle. ATL adds more immersion and variety to the combat system, making it more engaging and rewarding.

The game’s graphics are another highlight of Final Fantasy 16. The game looks stunning on the PlayStation 5 console, showcasing impressive details, lighting effects, textures, animations, and particle effects. The game’s environments are diverse and beautiful, ranging from lush forests and snowy mountains to desolate wastelands and futuristic cities. The game’s character models are realistic and expressive, conveying emotions and personality through facial expressions and body language. The game’s cutscenes are cinematic and spectacular showing off epic battles and dramatic moments.

The game’s graphics are not perfect though. The game suffers from some technical issues such as framerate drops, pop-in,
screen tearing but its miniscule so its not noticeable.

The game’s content is another area where Final Fantasy 16 shines,

The game offers plenty of content for players to enjoy such as side quests, mini-games, collectibles, challenges and secrets.

Some of this content is fun and rewarding such as hunting rare monsters, playing card games, finding hidden lore, helping out NPCs.

The game also features a New Game Plus mode which allows players to replay the game with all their progress and items carried over as well as access to new content and features such as alternate endings, extra bosses, and harder difficulty levels.

Final Fantasy XVI is an excellent game in every way. If you're a fan of the series for the stories and characters, you won't go wrong here, and if you've avoided the series for, say, turn-based combat, the sixteenth installment offers the perfect opportunity to get started with this legend of the gaming industry. This is a solid RPG/action game. Some elements of the game are unusual and fresh for single-player parts of the Final Fantasy series, but some are too dull and rudimentary.

New numbered FFs are good again. Stunning to look at, with new, punchy combat, and a great yarn, it is, if anything, too focussed, lacking a bit of the weird. [Issue#30, p.78]
