I thought, this game might kindle some joy for this genre, but I still wait for a enjoyable rpg from the east.

Absolute mediocrity. From Clive having the personality of a cardboard, the low resolution landscapes and poor framerate, to the mindless button spam and the embarassing dialogue.

Square Enix misses the mark once again.

After completing the game, i was left somewhat pleased, but ultimately left wanting due to certain points i felt the game failed to provide, bearing the boastful title of a final fantasy game.

    - upgrading system is a complete disappointment. weapons, bracers, belts all provide strictly vertical upgrades to defense and attack, no effects or passives or anything decision making, and are really easy to make, pretty much all the materials you need are spoonfed to you just playing it casually. may aswell not have it in the game at all.

-No party system. get used to playing as the same guy from start to finish. With the "exception" of...the next point im going to make, the dog.

-The pet dog torgal barely has any interaction. he gets a stat screen but you get no say or option to affect it in any way? not even food or other means to decide how he fights and gets stronger? big missed opportunity.

-While the story is fairly impressive, and a less-then-wide cast of lovable and memorable characters, there are many segments that felt rushed and not fully realised, and suprisingly felt more like a means to answer questions quickly, There are also segments where the pacing becomes a bit too slow, and honestly. kind of boring. being forced to help npcs in a town hardly stays fun for long.

-Virtually nothing else to do in the game except fight. fight, and more fight. most final fantasies have minigames of some kind to world build and overall add to the variety of experiences, and also rewards to go with it.

-sidequests are the epitome of uninspired. there is some effort to make them connect to the main plot but you could skip all their cutscenes and it wont impact your view on the main story at all. also the rewards for sidequests are often underwhelming, and not worth the time in the grander scope of the experience, although they begin to pay out better by the time you reach the endgame.

-No robust character customization. final fantasies are known for this. your only form of "customization" comes in the form of 3 accessory slots that in most cases slightly impact your moveset damage and cooldowns.

-your combat abilities come in the form of Summons (eikons in this game) that provide you with cooldown attacks which is very thrilling visually, althought limiting it to just cooldown attacks and 1 passive function left me desiring more. A party system could have strongly helped in this department.

-Music, sound design, effects and graphics or any other "superficial" aspect of the game where all top notch.

    conclusion:

If you want a water-downed action rpg with impressive flashy visuals that dont challenge your mettle in any way with a decent/solid story, this is worthy of buying it used or on sale.
    on the flipside.....
If you are planning to buy it, thinking you are going to get the true final fantasy experience, expecting that will get you lost in all of its depth and many facets of gameplay systems...... i cant recommend it in the slightest as you will be left wanting for somthing a bit more. I said all this without complaining that its not turn-based gameplay. Honestly, it was the furthest thing from my mind when i was playing this, final fantasy isnt about how the combat is, but more how it moves its genre to new levels, and makes you feel immersed in every way possible. The combat in this game did not redefine anything, its just the DMC combat director moving all of his usual stuff he does into a final fantasy action game.

Final Fantasy is way more then this. its not just about fast, flashy gameplay and long-winded storytelling. It's that, plus much, much more. This is not final fantasy.

Fair warning ahead, I do not like the more action oriented approach of FF16, initially it was quite fun but the more I played I found it less and less satisfying. To their credit, there are certain items you can equip which make it some aspects of the battle system easier (combos / evasion) but they can also turn the game into a quasi auto battler. The main reason I finished the game is the story and because I payed 80€ for it.

Much has been said about the story and the world. Yes, it is darker and grittier than usual and it starts out good, but later on it feels stretched and a bit bloated. The story is linear and your choices do not affect the world. The ending of the game is ... well ... the first thing I did was to type "ff16 ending" into google to find out if there is more. It is not, which is quite disappointing. The game continues a trend in which you spend dozens of hours in a game, a world and characters and once the main objective is achieved the game just end. No need to show how your actions influenced the world and characters in it. There is a small after credits scene but that does not replace a proper epilogue, especially not this one (you could interpret the scene in a way, that the entire story is just a fictional story in the world of Valisthea).

The side quests are mostly your usual kill and / or fetch quests. There are some really good side quests, which tell an interesting story. Some reminded me of the character quests from Mass Effect 2, but unlike in Mass Effect 2, they do not affect the story in any way.

The voice acting is a hit and miss. Overall it's ok, there is no outstanding good performance (but there are outstandingly bad ones for some minor side characters). In general the voice acting feels a bit flat, and some casting choices are questionable. The performance of the main cast is mostly ok. One thing I feel, I have to point out is the game is completely voiced until it is not. In the Hub areas, you can go to characters and talk to them. Some of them have some dialogue options and those are not voiced, even if the character is voiced otherwise. You get a wall of text and sometimes the character says the first words of a sentence. This is not a bug, this is intentionally and I don't understand why they did. It is nothing major but I find it strange and it kills the immersion.

The graphics are good, I played in "graphics" mode because I am ok with the 30 frames (60 would be nice, but stable 30 are ok). Framerate is mostly stable with some drops here and there. The depth of field and motion blur is a bit much and leads to some artifacts like ghosting and some issues with the depth of field around the hair, which is most notable during close-ups. During battles there are a lot of particles effects, to much if you ask me. There are so many that is it hard sometimes to distinguish what is actually happening, e.g. aerial blast creates a huge particle effect and you are unable to see what is happening inside, which is bad, because some enemies are not lifted in the air and can still attack you and the effect persists for a ~20s or so.

Regarding the level design, I actually like the smaller scale level design. Yes sometimes it is very linear but that is not necessarily a bad thing. I am tired of those huge but empty and overbearing Ubisoft Open-Worlds. On the other side, the levels are quite small and they still do feel empty and not alive. The hubs are actually quite nice.

For me the game has zero replayability, but for those who enjoyed the battle system, there is a New Game+ and the arcade mode.

This is at best an AAA title for Nintendo Switch (and I play on Nintendo Switch too) and I would be thrilled if this is not called a Final Fantasy game and is a debutant like Hogwarts Legacy was.

You know how FFXV had "A FF for fans and First timers"? (and it really is that). SE, you made your shot with calling up newcomers, you delivered, what you delivered, drop it off and return to roots. This one should be "A FF for Tik Tokers and those with attention span of a gold fish". This game is bad even for "hack and slash" type of games. I really don't see how is this called a FF game, when it's clearly a mish-mash of more popular games of this genre (God of War, DMC) with a "GoT" wannabe story. I expected Hogwarts Legacy to be watered down to bare bones of what deserves to be called an RPG, but I don't understand why SQUARE ENIX decided to cater to eventual newcomers, because there are plenty of other games out there that are "meta" and easy enough to play for people that are starting in JRPG and RPG overall. Final Fantasy was known for it's kinda complex combat system and managing right tactics at right time and it has a specific audience. It makes me sad seeing how they dumbed down whole game for masses.

Starting with preformance issues on preformance mode, reviewers described it as "minor stutters here and there"- No. They are not minor stutters here and there, but every time you enter some kind of "city" I would get motion sickness from such a poor optimization, and it doesn't get better with spending time there, it's the same if I just entered the place or I've been in it for 30min. Lack of customization in graphic settings is sad, I automatically turn of film grain and motion blur in every game because I just can't stand it.

Story started off strong, but it gets watered down, like they wanted you to hook up but for the rest of the game you hope it will have such a strong punch but it never happens, this basically became a dopamine chaser. Comabt gets old pretty fast, because you just smash square button and kick out same bullet sponges over and over. I got Garuda element but it doesn't really contribute to anything. I tought there would be some elemental weakness or some tought behind it, but nope - just a new flashy way to hack and slash trough mobs.

More often than not, I feel like game forces me into "Jesus take the wheel" mindset during epic battles. This mechanic was supposed to be the most epic in the game, that makes me want to jump out of my skin from excitement, but instead I drench it because I become a passive observer with ocassional QTE reminder that echoes Netflixes "Are you still watching?" There is waaaay to much cut scenes and with that many cut scenes you expect to know what is going on and who is who in every given time, but I find myself pulling out "Active time lore" more often than not, because there is too much kingdoms, dutchies and what not to keep track off. It feels thrown out and not fleshed out how its supposed to be fleshed out. Witcher is an example where you clearly know at any given time who are the "baddies and good guys" without suffocating the flow of the story.

I recently finished DIablo 4, and even Diablo had more fleshed out story and "who and why's", Even Diablo has more open map and world. honestly can't wait to finish this and jump back in Diablo.

Don't even consider getting this game if its not on some major sale, You will not get Final Fantasy expirience at all and you will be disappointed once more at how a huge respectable company can massacre belowed franchise because they are greedy or bored or don't even know in which direction they want to go anymore.

During my playthrough I did not feel compelled to explore the world as there is nothing meaningful in it (and with the game telling you exactly where to go at all times, you don't need to explore). I began to skip side quests altogether as they did not add anything to the experience (no exciting treasure to find, no interesting character development, etc.). And combat was trivialized after reaching a certain point very early in the game.

There is some fun to be had with the boss encounters and some of the story bits. There is political intrigue, plots and subplots, and grittiness, but these are all fairly shallow and don't quite scratch the itch like FFT or GOT.

    Extremely disappointing overall: 4/10

    Breakdown of pros/cons below.

    Main Issues:
    1. Quest Design & System:
The quest design and system removes the need to explore the world to find interesting interactions or characters. All designed content will be apparent through the infamous ( ! ) covering your map with who to talk to and where to go to complete it. This includes the main story. When you go to a new town or a new zone, you can simply B-line to the objective without fear of missing out.

The side quests add nothing to the game. These are your normal kill monsters, collect herbs, deliver to NPCs, talk to NPCs, etc. style of quests.

    2. Items & Treasure:
Treasure boils down to gil, crafting mats, potions/high potions, accessories, and occasionally music. Crafting mats are given very freely so there is never a need to go hunt the world for rare materials nor are they exciting to receive. At any given point in the story, you're only going to be able to choose to craft or upgrade one item in each slot: weapon, bracer, belt. You will not be constrained by limited materials or gil in this regard or have to choose between multiple options.

    3. Difficulty:
FF16 starts off with a nice level of challenge. Most likely due to the controls being new and only having a small number of abilities to use. Once you unlock three Eikons, however, the game's difficulty drops significantly. With 3 Eikons equaling 6 abilities total, you're generally able to cycle the abilities non-stop. Non-boss fights become trivial.

    4. RPG Elements:
They are there, but very shallow. Character "builds" boil down to choosing 3 Eikons from a pool of 8. Items do not add any diversity. Weapons and armor simply add attack or defense/life. Accessories come in a couple varieties: decrease a specific Eikon ability cooldown, increase a specific Eikon ability damage, or miscellaneous (xp%, gil%, damage%).

    5. Final Fantasy Charm
This is a weird one to elaborate on, but there's just something missing. Yes, the game has all the FF tropes like moogles, marbols, coeurls, etc, but they all feel lifeless. The game is very much one note: serious. Final Fantasy usually does a great job of walking the fine line between humor/wackiness and a deeply emotional story. This game completely falls on its side.

What FF16 has going for it:
    1. Bosses
Boss fights are the highlight of the game for sure. Some of the encounters were some of the most exciting in all of the FF series. I wouldn't have minded if the game was 100% boss rush with no other small encounters between.

    2. Artstyle/Music
The graphics, artstyle, and music are what you would expect from the FF series. Definitely a cut above the rest.

    3. Characters
There are some genuinely interesting character arcs throughout the story. Not all characters quite land, but the main players are what kept me engaged enough to finish.

    4. Story
The story is great, but has its pacing issues. There are a lot of ups and a lot of spots that drag on and on.

    5. Combat
Dodge and parry combat is always satisfying (just wish it presented more challenge)

Well if you are a new casual fan who never played a deep jrpg before it works as you don't have to worry about any mechanic just spam the same attacks until the stagger while evading some of the most telegraphic attacks ever seen in a video game ,with huge openings in between. FF16 is a game for everyone to just turn your brain off and enjoy the ride through some stretched cutscenes and the worst exposition witnessed in a video game with Clive many times repeating the same freakin thing to everyone. Absolutely nothing about it is innovative, the story is regurgitated and pretty much trying to ride the success of Game of Thrones and other epic shows which are "meta" right now.

Graphics are a joke for a PS5 game, putting a lot of effects in the screen is not synonym to good graphics, specially if you can't even keep 60 FPS consistently.

Ah! And can't forget, the crystals and a billion pointless garbage side-quests to artificially inflate the size of the game to justify charging full game price for a 20 hour experience which is what made some parts of FF7R mediocre on what could have been an overall amazing game and got people worried about the sequels.

I remember the days when Final Fantasy was synonym of trailblazing and doing things that no game had done before, this game was another nail in the coffin of mediocrity that is the current state of Square.

Final Fantasy XVI is literally the cookie cutter of games, exactly what was expected of a game directed by Yoshi-P. Did not disappoint in that sense, the most run-of-the-mill, vanilla, mediocre game with zero memorable features. It was either that or doing what he does for most of XIV which is recycle old Final Fantasy content.

Congratulations, you created the single player version of Final Fantasy XIV. Canned tuna with the budget and quality of a studio that should deliver caviar.

And yes, here you can still find honest reviews, not like the "brutal honest reviews" of social influencers hyping the game on youtube or the "professional reviews" in which the lines between journalism and PR have long been crossed. Just read some of the critical reviews giving Final Fantasy 16 a low rating here on Metacritic - at least the ones with a few written paragraphs.

Thankfully, people can still voice their discontent here. It's a small thing without much significance. Just a reality check that "you're not alone", there are still people that see through all the marketing, social influencing, and PR stunts, see the game for what it is.

But nope, can't have that. PR took over the internet almost entirely. Only some hours later then, PR-defences rolled up, social influencers and "gaming websites" claimed FF16 had been "review bombed" by "haters" and "trolls", standing at 6.8. Users wouldn't share the unanimous glorification of FF16, another "GOTY contender" just like the several dozen hyped games preceding FF16 in 2023. Twitter-crusaders were invited to launch a counterattack in the name of justice, resulting in 10/10-reviews containing one-liners, made by new accounts with no single other review, hyping the last non-glorious score up again.

Review of Final Fantasy 16: Many other reviews with a low rating perfectly sum up my impressions with the game, stating reasons that are comprehensible and transparent. So I confine myself to a summary: Disregarding the epic cutscenes, all of the core Final Fantasy elements are gone, completely lost, what remains is just smoke and mirrors. They tried to make FF16's story similar to "popular" stories like that of Games of Thrones, aren't even trying to cover it up. Considering gameplay, it's a competent but generic action game without any substance that tries to cater to people who "grew up with FPS and GTA games", as the producers openly stated in an interview, as if people didn't play any other games. Like, you know, if people want to play an action game they could just play a game series that is known for its good action, like Devil May Cry. If people want something similar to Game of Thrones, there's a million other copycats out there. Ironically, with Baldur's Gate 3 they went the opposite direction, made a turn-based copycat out of a great real-time game that you could pause.

Side-quests are a total waste of time and unrewarding because there's no gear system to funnel these reward materials into. Nothing at all.

No party system; no elemental weaknesses; no buffs/debuffs; no meaningful progression; no itemization; no RPG AT ALL for a FF game. It really sucks that they've ripped out all these components that make these games historically special and replaced them with a dated game design of: battle arena -> corridor -> cut-scene.

The positive reviews read like they were written by a PR agency which should be an indicator that they are fake. here is the actual score of the game from someone who has done a full play through.

Score as a Final Fantasy game: 0.025/10
Score as an action game: 3.2/10
Score as a Dark Souls Clone: 9.5/10

First this is the worst story i have ever seen in a video game. Beware the toxically positive FF14 community that try to flame anyone who brings a valid criticism to anything Yoshi P touches. It is disconnected with the only good character leaving after 18% of the game. The ending was terrible but honestly a fitting conclusion to this horrible game.

    Cons:
-All the bad elements of FF14 were copied and pasted into this game. All your quests will have you talking to multiple people who don't matter to waste your time. All the monsters and areas were copied from FF14 and had their graphics slightly up-ressed. The story is mostly copied from shadow bringers expansion. All the character models are slightly up scaled graphics of FF14.

-A death or two is impactful, killing everyone is just lazy story telling.

-This game has more adult material in it than all the Grand Theft Autos combined. Using the F word every third word and screaming it does not make something better. It does not make a setting darker. It is just lazy story telling.

-Completely disconnected narrative. After beating the game and getting to the end nothing in this story makes sense. There are cheesy cut scenes that have cringe dialogue with unlikable characters that talk about things that have no connection with the actual story in the game. The only likable character exits the game at around 18%,

-Unfulfilling end and conclusion. Nothing is accomplished or saved at the end. You are left filling empty and fatigued after getting to the end. I had to force myself to finish this game just so i didn't feel bad about spending all the money of buying it.

-Really terrible boss fights and cut scenes. This game is like junk food in the boss fights. Only tastes good for 15 minutes after it comes out and leaves you with a stomach ache and regret over making bad life choices. This was made for the Instagram generation that needs a ton of flashing lights and movement to keep their interest for more than 2 min. You can't even tell what is going on in most of the fights. Again this was another aspect copy and pasted from FF14. The initial Ifirit shceme in the main game (after the prologue), has the same background as FF14. It is pure lazyness.

-Length of game: The initial playthrough took me around 22 hours (over 75% of this time was doing really poorly designed fetch quests that required me to go to multiple locations and talk to npcs that don't matter to waste my time, like FF14). That was with completing every side quest, crafting every weapon available on normal difficulty, and completing every hunt. I have never clocked in less than 80 hours on an original FF game. Like FF7 remake after finishing the game you are forced to play through it again on a higher difficulty to feel like you have truly beaten the game. This allows lazy devs to use a small story and game twice to make it feel like its larger.

-There are so many more cons but i think the story being so bland and terrible is the biggest one.

    Pro:

This is probably the best dark souls game ever made. That is what all the development resources went into. Do you want to have scored events where you can flex you Epeen to your friends or the internet with how much better you are than them? There is a score based on battle performance for every level, zone, and trial.

In the same vein on "Final Fantasy" difficulty every fight is a struggle to manage your resources to win as you get later into the game. It requires perfect dodges and giving screen prompt commands that no longer appear on the screen and you just have to know what to press during mini cinematic events.

Conclusion: this is the worst Final Fantasy game ever made. It is a bad action game, but a great dark souls like difficulty game once you beat it and can do a second play through on the original intended difficulty. My review is based upon this being marketed as a main line Final Fantasy game.

There is no strategy, no party, no elements, (de)buffs, weapon choice, gear choice, stat choices, open world or over world, items to find, dungeons, hidden bosses, or character building for friends.

There are brief nods to chocobos, a moogle, some of the classic music, names of FF enemies/summons, and crystals. This was about all the Final Fantasy that was included in the 16th installment of Final Fantasy.

There is only combat and cutscenes. The gameplay loop is simply watch a 20-30 minute cutscene, walk through a narrow corridor of some type, kill 3 enemies, kill 3 more, fight a boss, watch 20 -30 minutes more of a cutscene. At best this is a weird Final Fantasy spinoff game. At worst it's the future of the franchise and 15 was the last mainline Final Fantasy game that retained any DNA from the last 30 years of the franchise's existence.

I have never been more disappointed in a final fantasy game. Maybe that is why they have given free demo, they know it will hook people because the start of the game is really good. Battle System 4/10: it's ok and fun at start then gets really boring after some time. We just mash skill button once on cooldown and keep pressing evade and surely we will win. Where is the mana limitation when using skills? Where is the summons in battle? Ff7 remake battle system is much more fun than this. i thought they are going to make battle more interesting since they approach an ARPG style but hey, i am mostly watching cut scenes anyway LMAO.

MSQ: 10/10 is actually pretty good.
Side quests: 4/10 are fetch quest and killing mobs. i thought it is gonna be more innovative than that. Some side quests are actually good if it involves story characters though. i love the mini bosses scattered in map though they are really easy to kill because HEY!!!! Im just spamming all my skills, even the S tier mobs is not challenging. Plus we dont need to waste our time on fetching side npc boooooooring quests!!! Didn't you learn from the FF7 remake problems, its a copy cat of this.

Mixed feelings with this game. it makes you excited in the main story then makes you sad and bored while doing some other things. Gets Repetitive after 20 hrs and feels like you're doing the same stuff. Tells you there are new things learned but not really. i can tell why some old players are really disappointed in this game. it is because they didn't get to play the game they love in a final fantasy game (no complex battle system approach, reall no summons in battle !?!?! at least make some skill limitations with judt having mana or add new mechanics after x amount of combos you can perform a special move) this is a wash up devil may cry approach.

The story is great, I wouldn’t say it’s FFs best but it is much better than recent games *cough* FF15. The main character Clive has to be one of my favorite protagonists in the whole FF franchise. He’s not as much of an edge lord and actually has some wit and softness to his character which was nonetheless refreshing. Now to why my rating of this game is a two. The ending. The ending ruins everything good about this game. Take the ending of GOTs and triple it, then triple it again, and again and you have this. FFXVI manages to make a war between kingdoms using gods as super weapons so boring it will bring you to tears.

    Story:
    - Overwritten dialogue: I get its a fantasy game, and maybe there should be some fantastical dialogue, but some of the crap that comes out of these 2D husks is just unendurably pretentious. I found myself avoiding quests towards the end of the game just so i didn't have to listen to NPCs vomit exposition at me. It also doesn't help that more than half the game is a cutscene.
    - Unearned plot-twists: There will be several plot twists in the story that simply don't make sense with the information you have at the time. These jarring twists are often explained after the fact, which sometimes make them sensible, but very often this still is not the case.
    - Awful pacing: Abuses time jumps frequently to feign character growth and story scale, as opposed to organic character/story changes over time. Important parts of character journey that would've been REALLY interesting to see are just completely skipped over, only to be constantly referred to in afterwards. You'll get this a lot during the early game, and its really frustrating.
    - Character motives and relations are not well established, if at all. At times, established motives will be utterly countered by a characters actions, which are always nonsensical. This is to progress the story in the way the writers want it to, without a care for consistent character writing. Part of this problem is the pacing mentioned earlier.
-Illogical lore: Eikons are basically super weapons that most kingdoms value majorly, and yet they hate other magic users. Why?? They are identical in every way other than eikons having MORE magical power. Really makes no sense to me. Eikons are also implied to be equivalent in strength through character dialogue, but this is clearly not the case in the story. Why this is so is never explained.
    - Terrible characters: A combination of dull writing, near-absent facial expression and flat uninspired voice acting (at least the English VAs) lead to a bunch of forgettable NPCs. This is particularly the case with the MC, who expresses one of 4 emotions: happy, angry, sad or very sad. It doesn't help that almost every single character has either a British, Spanish or Irish accent, making them quite hard to separate. Would have liked to see more variety.

    Gameplay:
    - Boring Action: There is absolutely no style or excitement in combat. It is just a load of button mashing with very limited ability cycling and easy dodges. Every ability and attack is something you have seen before if you have played any RPG. The game also has too much visual noise, often making combat utterly disorientating. The enemies are all just massive damage sponges, often taking minutes to kill anything bigger that a foot soldier. This is especially true in the large cinematic fights, which quickly lose their appeal when you are stuck there for 10mins fighting the same fight.
    - Useless Crafting and Currency: You are often flooded with crafting materials and Gil to pad the rewards screen of the dull combat you've just endured. These materials are hardly ever used, as crafting options are severely limited, to the point that it may as well not exist. Money also has no function outside of buying musical tracks for your home base.
    - Linear dungeons: Most dungeons have 0 branches, instead being a stroll through generic RPG settings. In the rare cases where a dungeon has a branch or two, exploring them is not rewarded, as you will either get a useless crafting item, useless currency or a potion, which you have an infinite supply of with your bottomless pockets of Gil.
    - An Empty World: Unrewarding in the same way as dungeons, with the only thing to discover being various combat trials. This open world is slowly and painfully opened up through linear missions, and really isn't worth the wait.
    - Fetch Quest Fetch Quest Fetch Quest: Every side quest to my memory is basically "Go here, kill this, fetch this back, mission complete!" Not a very interesting formula. There were some interesting stories in these quests, but they are few in number.

    Sound/Visual Design:
-Visual: Comparing FFXVI and FFXV, I actually like the designs of the gods in FFXVI more (except for Ifrit and Bahamut). The main villain is also VERY creepy in its design and initial presentation, In other aspects, such as level visual design, the game is typically flat and uninteresting visually.
-Music: FFXV has some tracks that I still listen too today, like Somnus etc. In comparison, 16 flaunts around generic fantasy crap that you wont remember, despite there being quite a range of tracks on the home base juke box. I played the betrayal theme in my homebase as it matched my mood playing the game and my thoughts on the games marketing. Sound is also poorly mixed, with the BGM overwhelming all other sounds, whilst massive terrifying creatures make roars that you have to strain to hear.

"Final Fantasy 16," let's just call it "Devil May Cry 16."

First of all, it lacks any RPG elements. The equipment system, at least, is just for show, and it has almost no gameplay value.

Secondly, the character development is terrible, except for Bahamut. In this game, only Bahamut's character design is successful. The main character and the female protagonist are both failures. One is only focused on revenge, and the other lacks any presence.

Just another Final Fantasy game, that fails to deliver. The world looks great, but it's just a lifeless scenery. There are barely people you can actually talk to and if there are, they don't have anything interesting to say. The characters also look too clean for a medival fantasy game.
The battle system is again very chaotic. Once you gain more abilities there are light shows all over the screen and you barely know what's going on. It just isn't a problem, because most enemies don't even pose a threat. Except for their large health pools they don't have anything going for them. So even with blind button mashing you'll be fine. The battles just drag on for way too long.
Also it's very annoying, that you often get animation locked by your abilities. This is so counterintuitive for an ARPG. If you want to make action combat, design your skills for action combat, so that my character responds to my input and isn't locked for 3 seconds, because he has to go through a lengthy animation.
If you want to make lengthy and flashy animtions, go back to making turn based games. At least there players can enjoy those animations. In an ARPG they are just an hindrance.
The side quests are the worst type of fetch quests you'll ever see in a video game. It's unbelievable how a series known for their great side quests could turn into this.
There is barely no RPG and almost no J left in this JRPG. It's more like a character action game than anything else. The skill progression system is so shallow, they could just have removed it all together and turned the whole game into an Action game instead of an JRPG.

But the worst thing are those Eikon battles the game advertises with. They just aren't fun and fell so out of place. You see like 20-30 seconds of interesting animations and actions, but the battles drag on for 5 minutes or more. You just keep repeating the same mind numbing stuff over and over and over again, barely doing any damage to your enemy and having to rewatch the same animations over and over and over again. So after a while you get really annoyed by those animations, that were supposed to be cool and awesome. You just wish to finally get over with this fight and move on with the story. It would have been much much better if SE made the Eikon battles just 20-30 seconds long cutscenes.

The story and characters are the only good aspects of this game, but they can't save this trainwreck. Before you buy this game check out the demo.

Final Fantasy XVI is not a good game. It is representative of a cynical, lowest-common-denominator approach to game development--the ultimate expression of flash over substance.

I've been playing FF games since the NES, and have enjoyed the development of the series over time. The recent action-hybrid system in FF7 Remake, for example, was a particularly good innovation that built upon the successes of the past. XVI, however, abandons the past in order to chase after an entirely different gaming audience. The developers have betrayed their own fanbase, cynically concluding both that their old fans will buy the game anyway, and the new audience will be bigger.

The problem is that XVI doesn't even succeed at what it is trying to be. As an action game it lacks combat depth, and it is very rudimentary and simplistic. Anything even slightly challenging would frustrate the so-called game journalists and lead to lower reviews, so players are treated to the most repetitive, basic combat available in any modern action game, paired with a complete absence of difficulty. The summon battles are even more unsophisticated, playing out like a two-button rail shooter. The very basic QTEs shoe-horned in throughout the game add to the sense that the developers have no new ideas.

In addition, the developers seem to have cottoned on to the idea that 'mature' means copy-pasting from Game of Thrones. After all, GoT is popular, just like action games. Sometimes, the blatant ripping off of GoT content is so ridiculous as to be laughable, but mostly it comes across as extraordinarily cringe-inducing. This would not be such a big deal if the game were not convinced that it is an HBO miniseries instead of a game. Be prepared to actually 'play' the game for only 15 minutes out of every hour spent with it. The cutscenes are continuous and relentless. But given how dreadful the combat is, perhaps the interminable cutscenes will be a welcome relief.

Pacing is simply awful, and the towns themselves are reduced to linear paths with NPCs along the side, to say nothing of the dungeons which are even less interesting. There are no places to explore, no treasures to be found in hidden areas, and the sidequests are creatively bankrupt, straight out of the WoW playbook. The storyline goes to pieces in the latter half of the game, and the final boss and conclusion are ridiculous and unfulfilling. The game adds a more challenging NG+ mode after completion, but it's hard to believe anyone would voluntarily play through it again after knowing that the latter portion of the game offers nothing.

The music and voice acting are both solid and even good in places. Neither is quite top-shelf but both are serviceable, let down by writing, pacing, and setting more than by execution. But these few bright points are obviously not enough to carry the game.

In the end, a lot of money spent on buying favourable impressions might lead to some people buying this game unaware of just what they're going to get. But, if they've any sense, they won't make that mistake twice: this game really will be their *Final* Fantasy.

In reality, you should want to keep turning this game on and playing... But you may never finish it or find the will to turn it on.

Lets be frank: this isn't a game. It's a game of thrones ripoff cinematic story with a few action combat scenes that you control.

There's basically no exploration. You maybe play 1/7th of the actual the game. The rest is cut scenes. Combat is over simplified... So much that it's impossible to die. Weirdly, you can make the game even easier by adding newbie rings... No clue why you would.

There's so bad arse cut scenes with some big things that you basically hit r1 or square.... And these cut scenes battles take WAY TOO LONG.

If I have to hit x then hold r2 to open another door I'm going to throw the game in the trash. Any reason a dev does something like this is: they are daft and lack any knowledge of gaming.

Equipment is stupid- you just buy new crap everytime you go to a town.. no real variety or even a need to update your gear. It's thoughtless. Yes, the graphics are good 90% of the time. Sometimes the character models drop textures - super weird.

    Voice acting is mostly good....

Battle system hack and slash F
I know FF13 gets a lot of heat but best battle system I’ve ever seen. Just amazing Wish they would utilize FF4 characters or something along that story line.
Yes you can change eikons but class- F

The graphics are great and the story is alright, but that's all it has going for it.

While the graphics are impressive, much (not all) of the aesthetics are quite boring when compared to older entries. Many very standard medieval buildings. So standard they might come from an online asset pack. Some vistas are great, as well as some dungeons. The combat system is not nearly as deep

While the graphics are impressive, much (not all) of the aesthetics are quite boring when compared to older entries. Many very standard medieval buildings. So standard they might come from an online asset pack. Some vistas are great, as well as some dungeons.

The combat system is not nearly as deep as people make it out to be. Normal enemies are a cake-walk, so while you might come up with combos, they're dead before you even finish them. Boss enemies generally can't be juggled, so they can't be comboed. It basically becomes a game of dodge, attack, dodge, attack. Initially you'll use high stagger moves, then when staggered you start off with a multi-hit move to build up combo and then spam all the skills to do the highest damage. In the end it's just a rotation. It's fun, but we've seen better.

Side-quests are boring, the game would be better without them. Old FF games did not really have that many side-quests and what was there was more interesting in terms of characters and reward.

Items are also useless for the most part, which in turn means exploration is meaningless. Yay, more sharp fangs! There are no status effects, so no items to help with that, only a few potions can be brought along and usually they'll drop them right in front of the boss arena. You just never actually have to prepare for anything.

Eikon fights are all about the spectacle. The actual gameplay is worthless.

I'm baffled by how positive the reception has been to a game that has such terrible game design. If you strip away the spectacle, the game itself has nothing going for it anymore. In fact, I think you'll be having more fun just watching the game than playing it. It would just be better as a movie.

This game feels like the death of Final Fantasy.

It's not a JRPG by any measure, and by that I mean that it isn't even an Action JRPG. I have never seen Youtube astroturf a game quite like this one. The presentation is very pretty (despite terrible motion blur and an iffy framerate), and the story is very interesting (so far, I'm ten hours in). The gameplay is terrible though.

The gameplay is terrible though. There is just nothing to the gameplay. VII Remake's battle system had the perfect compromise between between action combat and command based combat, but YoshiP decided to throw the baby out with the bathwater and make this a full DMC style button masher with no character building.

You would think that most of the people giving this game a 10 or 9 workers for Sony, this game is just a large CGI movie, you get maybe 5 minutes of gameplay and then 10 minutes of cutscenes, it’s extremely annoying, the dodge system is terrible when you do get into a boss fight, when they said this game has cutscenes longer than the entire lord of the rings trilogy, THEY WEREN”T LYING.

The story is intriguing, but unfortunately the game is rather shallow. The battles can be won by just spamming a few buttons and then unleashing a special move, there are no status ailments, weapon crafting seems to have been an after thought and there isn't a huge variation between the different "stances". For how much time went into this game I was hoping for more

I never thought I’d be giving a final fantasy game a bad review in my life. Hell I even loved 15 but this, this thing has been so hard to force myself to get through. Hell I even loved 15 but this, this thing has been so hard to force myself to get through. So, whoever made this game wrote a decent story, made it real pretty, and then it almost feels like they slapped an alpha version of a barebones ARPG on top of it. You’re genuinely only ever a few fights or a couple hundred yards at most away from the next cutscene, it’s frankly jarring just how often they take control away from the player, and half the time it’s to say nothing. And the world is so empty. Now by empty I mean the bestiary is like 38-40 creatures and over half of that is Eikons, some important characters, an owl you only see for a couple minutes, and then the other half are enemies. So essentially when you’re walking around any of these on rails or even semi open stages you’re going to be fighting the same 5-6 enemies for the majority of the game. And there’s geniunely nothing to do except advance the main story. The shinies on the ground on the map? It’s about 2-5 gil, a potion (of which you can only have 7 of ever), or 1-3 crafting mats. Wooden chest on the map? It’s about 100 gil or about 20 crafting mats. Finish a side quest? Oh yeah crafting mats. Boss time oh yeah!! You are rewarded with crafting mats. Major plot enemy or Eikon fight?!?! You guessed it! More crafting mats!!! And thats assuming you can get through all the QTEs they put into every Eikon fight to hide loading times that literally consist of either “press square” or “press R1” and you have like 10 seconds to do it so no rush. And those QTEs will about take care of the last half of their Hp so don’t worry. Did I mention crafting mats? Because you literally barely ever need to use it. You are 100% guaranteed to get the next best weapon from a mat dropped by last chapters boss. There are no status effects, no elemental weaknesses, which I feel like they forgot. Because enemies cast stuff like bad breath, poison mist, etc., you get several elemental spells, but all they do is damage, again no status effects, and in no greater amount than any other spell. It’s….pretty, and the story really tries to stay relevant minus some very weird points it REALLY wants to drive home and some massive plot holes, but it has some really good scenes for sure. But this game only feels like a slightly interactive visual novel with some good boss fights. Better to watch a stream or a YouTube vid because it really just feels like a GoT fan fic movie. Please don’t waste your money. Expand

Final Fantasy XVI is no RPG but a cinematic action adventure with a weird story in a dull world - and it's performance is very poor.

The Final Fantasy series has some of the best JRPGs out there but Final Fantasy XVI is not one of them. It has minor RPG elements but in a very simplified way similar to Spider-Man or Far Cry. You wouldn't call them RPGs, would you? Not everything is bad if

Not everything is bad if course : Combat is pretty fun and at first glance the visuals are beautiful. I like the art style & the darker tone if this game The cutscenes are of high quality.

However I can't recommend this game. The world is dull and empty, the story gets weird halfway through, MMO-like side quests aren't fun and the loot system is very questionable. It feels a bit like "Game of Thrones : Devil May Cry Edition" but it's very different from previous Final Fantasy games. This game should have gotten a different title.

The performance mode of this game is atrocious : The exploration sequences are a stutterfest barely touching 60fps and dropping into the 30s. In combat resolution drops to 720p and the game becomes very blurry - while still not being able to maintain 60fps. The only way to enjoy this game is in 30fps quality mode.

I should have avoided this release. All those good reviews a few days ago tricked me into giving it a try. I wonder what Square Enix spent to get such misleading scores...

The change in style strays unimaginably far from the mark as well. It's a betrayal of the fans who helped to build Squaresoft/Square-Enix's brand. Shame on you guys, we deserved better. I used to buy every new game without hesitation, but now you're going to have to earn me back as a customer for anything but remakes; the trust is broken. Expand

Final Disappointment 16. My expectation for Final Fantasy is already low after 13 and 15 but this is just a new level of let down. They abandons their identity and try whatever popular at the moment, so I'm not surprise if Final Fantasy 17 is just battle royal mix with Call of Duty gameplay

Final Fantasy XVI is an excellent game in every way. If you're a fan of the series for the stories and characters, you won't go wrong here, and if you've avoided the series for, say, turn-based combat, the sixteenth installment offers the perfect opportunity to get started with this legend of the gaming industry. This is a solid RPG/action game. Some elements of the game are unusual and fresh for single-player parts of the Final Fantasy series, but some are too dull and rudimentary.

New numbered FFs are good again. Stunning to look at, with new, punchy combat, and a great yarn, it is, if anything, too focussed, lacking a bit of the weird. [Issue#30, p.78]
