The worst waste of time I've made this year
Because "playing" ff16 isn't fun at all, since it's basically 85% cutscenes, and the story is even a boring and sluggish dull mess. While the gameplay is button smashing meet bullet sponge mobs + cinematics qte bosses (all scripted).
    Hugely disappoint experience imho

Terrible game. Bought PS5 because I watched playthroughs of the demo and I thought the story hook was pretty good. The game was a complete let down. The story is a complete bungled mess with bland characters. The game has zero fun locations or environments, just overcast gray grasslands and desert. You can't even explore the cities or castles that it shows in the cutscenes.

Exploration is non-existent, the devs outright lied about the story dungeons being "expertly-crafted" when they're literal hallways. RPG elements are barely even present at all and the combat simply revolves around spamming your cooldown abilities as much as possible. The difficulty is insultingly easy to the point where you have to actively be trying to die in order for story bosses to kill you.

It's a good linear action combat game, on the level of Devil May Cry 5.
But this is not a Final Fantasy game, it has no rpg mechanics, no freedom, no side quests worth talking about.
It's an unbearably long 60 hours cutscene with the occasional playable bit. It's boring and it's not an rpg. It's a dumbed down version of a Final Fantasy that will only appeal to fans of games that are not JRPGs

Not a FF game, maybe a good action game.
I think newcomers can like it but for old FF fans this game is terribile.
I quit FF16 after 30 hours and play just some hours FF 7 (1997 version) to make my heart happy again!

ChatGPT could easily create a better storeyline with charismatic characters and much more interesting elaborate backstories. The plot is thin, and oftentimes I just don't see the point to any of it. Played since FF7 and here are the main points to why i scored it a 4.

Exploration is pointless - Doesn't appear to be any point to exploring, the maps are pretty linear for the majority and those that are a bit more open just don't have anything in them. I expect that if i detour from the main path i'll more often than not come across a shiny item or interesting fight like in every other FF game. Not here.

Side quests are repetitive, unrewarding and boring - Not sure how they got this so wrong. It's not exactly a secret what makes a side quest boring and not fun, yet they seem to have followed this blueprint to the letter.

Additional content - every other FF game has had interesting additional content. E.g in FF15 you got to do up your car, partake in fishing, go on hunts etc. In FF7 you had the gold saucer, in Ff8 you had a card game to name but just a few. In ff16 you have monster hunts but because of the below points that also suffers.

Items/Gear/Upgrades - Just feels so meh. 1 type of weapon which is a sword, upgrades happen frequently so you never really feel like you achieved anything. There is never any choice to make with weapons and armour, you just wait for the game to supply you with the upgrade at predetermined intervals. The only thing you need to care about is whether the damage or armour number is higher than the one you are currently using, which it will be every time.

Combat - no depth at all, no interesting choices to make, no real tactics needed. If you can dodge at the right time and press square, you can beat the game easily. A real head scratcher considering the combat system used in FF7 remake would have be great here. Having 1 character to control would have been fine if there was some depth there, but taking depth away was a confusing move.

Story/Gameplay - I had high hopes after the demo. I described it as final fantasy for adults, which was something that really excited me. Game of thrones style grit and story in a final fantasy package, amazing! Unfortunately the story goes downhill fast and the sheer amount of story content and watching cutscenes or boring dialog made me not care very quickly and proceed to skip just so i could actually play the game. If i wanted a movie i'd watch a movie.

Graphics - they are good and probably the only redeeming feature. Had no issues with FPS or crashing so it feels polished. But you can't polish a turd and expect success.

Overall, i'm really disappointed. As other long time fans have said, this isn't a final fantasy game anymore. And what makes it even more disappointing is just how great it could have been.

If I was to review this one in one word it would be "Shallow".
There is no depth in most of the game. No interesting systems whatsoever. Very repetitive gameplay loop and no incentive gameplay mechanics to expand on and keep me going. Just.. plain.

Whoever at PlatinumGames said this was their Magnum Opus was on copium too, we saw better combat in the 2000's by DMC3 and we've had better cinematic QTE moments in gaming since Uncharted 2. The Titan Fight is the only thing we see come close to anything on the scale of your typical God Of War/Bayonetta/DMC style game, and it is let down by extremely basic QTE commands and a framerate that cannot keep up with what is happening on the screen.
The story moves at a snails pace and there is cutscenes all over the place that could have just played out in game (EG: Cid trips over on a bridge, This is shown via a 3-4 minute cutscene with tedious gaps between each and every sentence as if the voice acting was all done line by line without any actual cohesion)

    Dead IP.

It is very obvious how drastically different this installment is. Even if you say "Final Fantasy has always been changing", the argument falls apart when you see just how little of the previous series is left. No game in the series has changed this much, comparing it to the games released before it. It is wild how intense some of the 10/10s are getting, if the game is critiqued at all. I'd be suspicious of a perfect score on literally any game. As for the identity crisis, it's a valid and hefty critique. What genre is this game? It may be technically an RPG, but it's RPG elements are poorly implemented, and so timid, that it's like they put the bare minimum in. I understand if you like the game, but pretending it's something it's not, is only adding to that identity crisis. It's not Final Fantasy, and it's barely an RPG. That's my personal opinion. If Square Enix branded this a new IP, and didn't try to force the game to be a poorly implemented hybrid of genres, some of the higher scores would be better warranted. Expand

The game is far too easy and even boss fights are stacked with checkpoints so that you can restart mid-fight in the unlikely case you would die.
Fighting is boring and ultra repetitive.
The gear system and abilities system are jokes and are not interesting.
The item system is useless and you can breeze through the game by using only potions.
There is no strategy in fights, you just damage, damage, and damage. No status, no magic, nothing… And there are so many explosions of lights that you can not see enemies attacking.
The pacing of the game is horrible with extremely long cutscenes for the main story where people walk slowly, talk slowly, stare, and repeat the same things over and over. Every motion is slow, taking a quest, giving an item to an NPC, displaying the reward screen. And most of the time you can not speed it up, it’s either skip it or endure it.
The main story is extremely simple and always repeats the same pattern: The bad guy of the hour appears, side quests to solve to go to the bad guy lair, fight with the bad guy, repeat over and over until the end. The villain of the game is revealed extremely early and from there there will be almost no twists. Everything that happens is easy to anticipate. The relationships between people are strange and very cringy. Even the romance between Clive and Jill is not good. The characters that accompany Clive are dull and uninteresting. Their clothes and designs are so devoid of color and originality that they look like any other random NPC. And since you do not control them, it does not feel like they are part of the adventure. The story is also an uninspired copy/paste of Game of Thrones and Witcher 3 in so many ways that it’s impossible to find a shred of originality in it.
The side quests are a complete disaster and just MMORPG like side quests, devoid of any interest and impact on the story. You could just skip them and be the better for it. Their pacing and fetching pattern is also horrible.
The game has 2 lore characters that are here to give the impression that the story is complex and ends up telling you most of the time nothing: One of them tells you: The king will probably do something soon. How is that even smart?
There is no exploration, no map with free movements. It’s corridor after corridor after corridor.
The chocobos are nice because they make you gain time. Otherwise they are useless. Same for the Mog.
The main villain looks like an alien version of Marilyn Manson and does not inspire fear.
The main character is a little interesting at the beginning but becomes very dull as the adventure goes on.
Also the power scale does not make sense in this game, with simple thieves challenging your character to fight when he has god-like powers.

Some of the musical pieces are good, especially during boss fights (except a very strange techno music that is the most horrible thing I have heard in an RPG). But others themes are just copy-paste of older FF music ( FF VIII, FF XIV) that do not have their place in this game.
The only thing this game has going for it is that it is quite beautiful. But this is often diminished by having a lot of dark and dull environments. This makes the world dull and everything but a fantasy world.

Also some of the Dominants fights and the last fight are quite epic. It’s such a shame that they are so easy and simple. It removes all sense of stakes and dread.

When it comes to side content, this one wears its MMORPG inspirations on its sleeve, and that has absolutely no appeal to me. Boring, meaningless fetch quests and forgettable characters everywhere.

Boss fights are okay, but most of the good stuff is relegated to cutscenes interspersed with button mashing QTEs and sulky monologues. We were promised God of War 3 but outside of Titan we never even got close to that.

So little of the series is in this installment, and the main reason it's getting positive reviews is not because it's "Final Fantasy" but because it feeds the masses very generic and addicting aspects of modern gaming.

This casts aside decades of an open world RPG based title for a character action game with linear game progression. If your expecting a game that keeps you engaged and looking for secret side content this will leave you disappointed. The cinematic interruptions constantly disengages you from the game play, and the linear fights remove any hint of exploration.

Gear is borderline irrelevant as you just craft the next pieces that correspond to the story and guaranteed material drops from bosses. Combat lacks variety as you can just rotate the same skills for maximum DPS, stagger, and damage immunity. There has been a long cry for the mainline series to return to turn-based or ATB at the very least and XVI’s gameplay and combat (or lack there of) have hit this home harder than ever. Trying to be a generic, action RPG won’t get Square Enix there. The heart of the original FF was a party based game similar to Dungeons and Dragons and XVI walked completely away from that. Character diversity is seriously lacking as well. Movies don’t assume the viewer is uneducated and video games shouldn’t either. If you're bad at action games and want something super easy then this is the game for you. Outside of knowing what skills cause the enemies stagger to go down faster it doesn't really matter what combination you choose. Just spam moves and dodge and you'll never see a game over screen. I am ashamed I purchased this game new just adding to undeserved sales numbers. At least we know this game won’t be in contention for GotY. Expand

I really expected more from a Final Fantasy game. For me, this isn’t a true Final Fantasy game. It is a game trying to be Final Fantasy (and missing the mark completely) after binging game of thrones.

Wow I came in with high expectations after ff15. Everyone saying it's better than ff15. Omg it's probably one of the most boring action rpgs I've come across. I enjoy the combat. Even the action set pieces. But the story puts me to sleep. Not a fan of the medieval either. 15 is way better than this boring slog and yet was hated.

Didn't like the main ending villain, but the Game of Thrones feel for the first 90% makes up for it. The only problems are that loot is pretty much useless, making exploration also useless. And the sidequests are a MAJOR slow down to the main quest rhythm, specially towards the final mission when all of the sudden you get like 15 quests that take about 4 hours while you should be going after the bad guy that's about to destroy the world. The only difference is people actually had to PAY for this game. So it is more likely 0 would exist if they didn’t like the game. Whereas, fanboys or people with low expectations and the inability to review would give it a 10 for satisfying a couple of category or for just not being bad. If perfect existed in your world, then it is clear that you don’t know what you are talking about. Ever think your spouse or job or anything else in life is perfect?

Now that’s out of the way.

The game clearly has a great artistic feel from music to graphics. I would even say it’s one of the best for environment / feel they are trying to portray like every Final Fantasy. However, that has become the base for a very long time. Over 20-years. It’s like voice acting is expected in games today, so it doesn’t get a 10 for having great music or graphics which it’s already known for as a Final Fantasy title.

That being said, what makes the game suffer is really the creative direction & gameplay of the series. The title is one of first MAIN titles given a rating of M, which says something. That something being their target market is no longer towards the light-hearted adventurous players. You can tell that they are totally targeting the Western audiences with the Brute character designs, blood, gore, and sexual themes etc.

This in of itself makes it a Western RPG not. Japanese RPG.

It’s medieval Europe and I will praise they did not bow to the Woke crowd and adjust to include Blacks. It’s not like they included Asians. No gaming company should bow to the Woke on creativity, that’s why Disney is failing so horribly. At any rate, being set in medieval Europe I would have enjoyed the series a lot more if it had a different Art Direction.

It seems like the Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin was just the beginning of the Dark Gore style art. XVI reminds me a lot of it. It really started with XV but these type of art direction is only captivating to Western players. Previously, even during the PS1 era, a lot of people hated JRPGs or video games in general. They only started climbing aboard gaming during Xbox 360’s release. That has caused the FPS genre to take off. These players are often polar opposites.

This game basically threw away what final elements it had as an JRPG (started at FF13) in attempt to capture the Western audiences. Notice the art-style changes vs Tales of, Persona, Xenoblade etc.

One of the most important and greatest things about JRPG is its enormous world, and ability to travel around the world. I’m not talking about travelling around an island or a country but an airship with the ability to dive in water or into the air to roam the world. That has completely disappeared.

The second, is the light-hearted main characters, elements that appeal to teenagers or younger audiences. It is clear to me from the art direction, that they no longer want to appeal to younger audiences except probably the older Western generation from the PS1 and 360 eras. Look at the difference between popular games like Minecraft, Roblox, Fortnite etc vs the New Final Fantasy Art styles. This has bothered me, because I prefer light-hearted characters opposed to brutes of the Western games.

I remember someone made a video talking about Cloud, how he looks like a girl and they can’t take him to a bar for a beer like Thor. Brutes are the character designs of the Western society. It’s like how woman look like crap in video games for West vs Japanese designs. So I don’t like their art and creative direction. This game atmosphere reminds me of Vagrant Story from the 90s or the Stranger of Paradise closer to the 2020s. The atmosphere is one of the same, dark, gloomy, etc not magical like Final Fantasy games should be. It is a very Westernized Design for western audiences. Reminds me of another art style Elden Ring.

Other JRPGs like Tales of, Xenoblade, Persona, etc all is taking a very light-hearted approach but Final Fantasy games are becoming what you call Western RPG not JRPG.

    Battle system
I always like new battle systems and learning about them. I don’t really care if it’s button smashing or strategic like Marvel Midnight Suns, it’s all fine to me. However, this is more button smashing.

I would write more but I don’t have time to waste on this review. It’s a hype, and fanboy game. Maybe it will appeal to Western players more, who knows? I guarantee you that a lot of the 10/10 reviews are also fake as I stated nothing in this world is perfect, especially if you paid $$$ for it.

To me, it wasn’t worth the $150. I don’t think it was a life changing game. There was nothing revolutionary about the game.

overall - The game is fine if you like this kind of story, a fan of Devil May Cry, and don't mind endless cutscenes. But that's it. Everything else felt barebones or just filler. It's cutscene, fight, cutscene, rinse repeat. None of the Final Fantasy charm, characters for the most part felt boring especially the non-playable ones. It would've been cool if Jill was an official party member who you could customize and use her for different strategies. Weapon upgrades and crafting are basically nonexistent. Side quests were garbage (way worse than the FF7 Remake ones). There's just very little world building, surprise element, or sense of discovery in this game. Progression and ability page are very uninspired. Not even a freaking side activity or mini game. And even the combat which is the best part of the game is faced with repetitive enemies and strategies. Again, if you like to just watch a story with minimal control go for it. Final Fantasy 7 Remake might've upset people off with some of the story changes but at least it brought the best of what made Final Fantasy great and at the same time modernizing it. Final Fantasy 16 is not geared for fans of the series.

Trash mobs can just be button mashed to death. Bosses and big monsters are a little more engaging, but only a little. They should probably just drop the RPG pretense entirely, since the numbers go up more or less on a set schedule and the gear is basically handed to you in an extremely straightforward way. It's not a bad system, just not enough to keep me interested if the rest of the game is me just sitting through a movie and occasionally carrying things back and forth for NPC side quests. Maybe it's my fault, but I shouldn't have played this right after Tears of the Kingdom. Quests are simply npc's saying "go see ___", walk 30 steps, press x to talk to npc, walk back to first npc. Everything about the way this game plays is paint-by-numbers and goes beyond boring into the realm of irritating.

I'm usually into narrative-driven, cinematic games, and since that's what people kept saying was this game's strength, I spent the $95 CAD... I feel ripped off. This game proves to me that a big cinematic story doesn't save, or even help, when the gameplay and tech aspects are this boring/bad. Even the demo section made the game seem like it had some promise because they obviously put more time into polishing it- but soon after you pass that section you'll notice things like character models, cinematics, and sidequests drop off dramatically in quality. This feels like a game an indie studio would make in 2015, but with plagarized high-budget cinematics spliced in every 30 seconds to pad it out.

I wouldn't like this game if it had been made by a small team of indie devs, but the fact that Sqaure Enix and CBUIII made this with the budget they had does make me hate it a little more. This is because they have no excuse for how lazy this game feels. i feel like the writers of the game really tried to do their job, but everyone else on the dev/publisher teams just couldn't care less. Square Enix sucks, and I should have known better. Why would I pay $95 to a company whose last release was Forspoken!? Because I thought CBUIII had some integrity.

The people giving this 10's are either devs who worked on it or their family and friends. No one could play this for more than 6 hours and not be bored to tears.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So, I spent a lot of money on this game, only to find out the game was as empty as it gets.

Music was good, graphics were good, but gameplay was TOO EASY, to the point that by the 30 hours gameplay I stopped using completely potions or items.

There was no use of getting new equipment, unless you got it from the Blacksmith after defeating some boss on the hunter board (Which I used to do, each time a new one would appear, since those were the only challenging monsters you could fight after 40 hours into the game).

The story, is almost a carbon copy of Tales of Arise, but with minor differences and generic tropes (FF: Slaves are used for their magic powers = TOA: Slaves are used for their Astral Energy. FF: There are 5 Crystals in 5 kingdoms = TOA: There are 5 master cores in 5 Kingdoms. And I could go on and on). But, alas, it's not as good as Tales of Arise, which in that game, once you get to the end of the story and beating the 5 Kingdoms it opens up a new story. In this one, you just fight a one last boss, some silly explanations, "sad" ending, curtains.

Yeah, this is not a game I recommend for $70+taxes. Once you see it on sale for $40, perhaps.

But, it's an empty game. Barely 100 hours of "gameplay" (I put that between quotes, because once you get the Phoenix Wings, Garuda Tornado and the Bahamut Ray, the game ends. Everything gets beaten in less than 5 minutes. Most fights or scenes, last more than 5 minutes thanks to the dialog and cut-scenes. No joke).

I don't recommend this game honestly. If you want to play the same game, but with better characters, a better more enriched story and better gameplay, do play Tales of Arise. It's the same story...and no, I'm not joking. FFXVI just added the Eikon fights to the story. That's it.

OHHH! and as a PS: You only play with Clive the entire game. You can't change characters nor give orders to your companions. Only to the Wolf that accompanies you. Which...I barely used, after I found out monsters died with three powers...

"Hell is paved with good intentions".
This game trying so hard to do good things, but none of them are memorable.
You'll play once, and never launch it again.
That is sad, because now we compare the FF games with titles like "Ys" or "Tales of", and historically, there were light years away.

    Conclusion First:
This is not a numbered Final Fantasy game I was expecting after waited for so many years. Story is bland and feels more cringe each time with those stupid dialogue lines. Side quests are boring and no rewards or even fulfillment from completing extra contents.

    Cons:
    - A cutscene viewing game, half of the playthrough are just cutscenes and sometimes QTE
    - Demo is the best part of the game, after that the story just keeps going downhill for me at least
    - No magical elements, all the skills felt the same just various dmg and stagger points
    - No strategies at all, the entire game i can just smash square and R1 button
    - All the maps are linear, basically zero explorations, the fact it lets Torgal guides player where to go makes me chuckle
    - Terrible loot reward from chests, mob hunts and side quests. No need to bother with them unless you are completionist or want to level up the character
    - Many unnecessary naked scenes and character introductions
    - No weapon/accessories system, just buy the weapons every 3-4 missions and you are good to go, blacksmith and crafting weapons in this game is an absolute joke
    - Character runs slow, and only sprints outside of cities/towns. Besides, you can't manually sprint unless you push L3 buttons for 5-6 seconds, even DMC5 isn't this disgusting
    - 10 seconds unskippable checkout screen when you finished the fight to show what you earned and got from each fight/quest. This killed my motivation to do the quests
    - Side quests are long and boring, Plus. you have to click on the items to give it to the NPCs despite you can't even choose the items. Why would you keep this in the game? I feel like I am playing FF14 with all these bad quests and extra steps
    - Story battles feels like a FF14 dungeon, adds, adds then boss, repeat it for three times
    - Eikon battles are long and repetitive, I would not bother to play the game again if I have to do those fights

    Pros:
    - Good music, cinematic and presentations throughout the entire game
    - Clive's character development is good

They understand what FF is but are missing so many fundamental details. I hope Yoshida just go back with Division III on FF14 and never put those stupid MMORPG designs in another single-player game

All of the negative reviews I have seen are on par with how I feel. Poor pacing, poor mechanics, poor story and character development with mechanics that seem like afterthoughts. More Devil May Cry than Final Fantasy. I will not be getting another one after this, but as a fan of games 1-12 (minus a few here and there) l, it seems I am not the target audience for this anyways.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a huge fan of the series, this entry was yet another letdown. I'll try to go through it as short as possible as pros and cons:

    The pros:
-Very good graphics, although performance isn't great. I'd recommend going for the 'graphics' mode, since the 'performance' one can't hold a stable framerate to save your life. It's really jarring to look at.
-Stylish combat, although it does get pretty repetitive by the half-point
-A lot of "content" (which is also a con, more on the quotation marks on the 'cons')
-High production value, with decent voice acting. You can tell the game was made with good hardware and talented people.
    -A few memorable boss fights

    The cons:
-The story. It's actually quite interesting when you look at the setpieces, but the execution simply doesn't hold up. The pacing is very poor, and after fairly surprising first good two hours the story takes a backseat, and all the filler content starts taking place. Also, the game pulls a massive "your princess is in another castle" by capturing the female lead not one, not two, but three freaking times. It got old the second time.

-The music. I didn't expect to be so disappointed by FF soundtrack, but I honestly cannot remember any tracks of this game, and music was always very important part for me about these games. The music is simply not memorable nor particularly noticable, but rather that epic orchestra which is just backing up the fights and the scenes.

-The content. There is a lot to be had, with the main story easily taking close to 20 hours. Add another 20 for all the hunts, side-quests and another playthrough with possibly harder difficulties. The issue here is that the content is mostly not interesting. The side-quests are often XIV-style (you know, the MMORPG of the series) styled fetch quests with plots that actually don't provide for interesting stories to tell, but rather VERY generic stuff.

-The dialogue. This one is probably related to the content as well, but the dialogue is written in a manner where everything has this weird, very slow pace which seems to question the intelligence of the listener. This goes as far as to have some incredibly cheesy, corny lines (which isn't that unusual in the series, but here they went way overboard). The dynamic between characters is like something generated by two robots without any real emotions, other than the biggest emotional parts of the game, which are at least voice acted well.

    -The UI is XIV copy.

-The fighting. It actually feels like a lot to take in at first when they start introducing new Eikon abilities, but after getting a grasp of it all the battles run exactly the same without any real strategy. Despite being flashy, it feels almost as like a step up from FFXV: you do actually have to put more consideration into your inputs, but it simply isn't too interesting once you actually figure it out.

-The Eikon battles. Now, I actually enjoyed the parts where you fight the Dominant before they turn into Eikon, but these battles seem to go on forever. You literally "slay" (the game even says so) the same boss 3 times. I get that these are supposed to be the main pull of the game, but surprisingly fighting as your own Eikon is pretty much the same stuff you do as Clive: but simply on a bigger scale. The principle is exactly the same.

-The antagonist. There are quite a few, but only a single major one. The problem is that none of these have enough impact on your journey to actually make them interesting, and the game has a weird refusal to do unexpected things and kill off characters when they most definitely should have died. The antagonists simply are too weak, and I'm getting massive FFXII vibes here (and they are not good).

-The leveling/character upgrades. The loot system is absolutely pointless, as you get the good upgrades regardless via gil that you get automatically (of which amount is also greatly inflated), and the upgrades are also extremely minimal (we're talking about a few %, which means like a couple of actual hits in a fight). The abilitiy upgrading is also doing very little to enhance the gameplay or give actual weight to the customisation. It is by far the simplest FF in regards to this.

-The ending. I mean, it ended pretty much the way you expected from the very beginning of the game, but I was still expecting it to subvert these expectations. It actually ended up being even more simple form of the ending that was very predictable. It's a little bit emotional, but it fails to deliver on those high emotional notes the game is supposed to hit.

Considering I was very disappointed with XII, XIII, XV and XVI, I feel sad to say this may have been the last time I buy FF title on launch. Call me nostalgic old fool, but the magic, the emotion, the joy and the fantastic atmosphere of the old dames is long gone. I believed the reviews, but after 100%'ing the game, I cannot believe the game has scored as high as it has

FF13 - you have 1 town, still have some RPG element
FF15 - you have 2 towns, RPG elements start fading
FF16 - you don't have any RPG elements, no city to explore, cities are the dungeons, towns are laughable with almost no interior.
Is a better ff than 13, 15 though

Where did the development funds go?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My review is delivered at 25 hours play time, as that is when I finally gave up hope that Final Fantasy XVI could turn it around.

This is a bad game, plain and simple. There are some positives, but not nearly enough to outweigh the negatives.
I do not agree with the 0 ratings being doled out as Final Fantasy XVI is not unplayable; however it does not deserve the 9's and 10's either.

My main problem with this game is the story which is supposed to be the heart of Final Fantasy. The story is a complete downer. After the first hour or so it's just death and depression and everyone hates you and everything sucks and it doesn't deviate from that path. I prefer mature stories but this one is just depressing.

    Spoilers here:
Literally everyone dies, and when you get the faintest glimmer of hope everyone dies again.

The story is also poorly told. It's broken up, the supporting cast is not fleshed out at all and the whole time skipping thing is just lazy. It removes any chance the game could have had to develop backstories or give you any opportunity to care about what's going on.

Sidebar; time skipping / time travel in video game stories is the ultimate hallmark of bad writing.

The combat is a massive disappointment, as it had so much potential. There's just so much more that could have been done with it. It's all one note; there's no complexity whatsoever. Were the devs afraid that any shred of depth would send the masses of brainwashed weebs running for the hills at the first sign of an elemental weakness?

Spoilers again as I am going to get specific:

Ifrit is done dirty in this game. For all the hype around Ifrit and the fact that Clive is his Dominant, all you get for him is 2 crappy abilities and Limit Break which just gives you a strength boost. You don't even get a third ultimate like Judgement Bolt or Tornado; yes you read that right-- no Hellfire for Clive. It would have been so much better in my opinion if Limit Break activated an ultimate ability for whatever Eikon you were using. It would have made them special.

I did mention positives so I will say that the cutscenes are beautifully rendered and soundtrack / voice performances are excellent. It's a true shame that they were all wasted on this lackluster game.

Now lets get to the straight up lies. "RPG"; nope. This is not an RPG, this is Game of Thrones the action game wearing a few bits of Final Fantasy's decaying flesh as armour. "Adventure" is a word used to sell this game; nope. There is no adventure here. There is a linear slog through an awful story with nothing to discover in the world aside from the odd chest or item pickup that gives you either 2 gil or some more useless crafting material.

I'll rapid fire the rest as I am ready now to forget this game ever took my time and money so here we go.

The sidequests are pathetic, the crafting / gear system is a joke, and the Performance mode is terrible.

I will close by saying do not be fooled by the demo; I was. It's all downhill after that first hour.

This game is Final Fantasy in name only. Absolutely nothing about it hearkens back to what Final Fantasy used to be. There are no party members, it is not an RPG and they say the F word more times than a Limp Bizkit song. Final Fantasy XIV is the last great Final Fantasy to ever be made if this is the direction the series is going.

It would make more sense to call this game something

It would make more sense to call this game something completely else because Final Fantasy it is not. Do not waste your time or your money. You can't manipulate stats to make "builds", it's extremely linear and is filled to the brim with gore. You can't equip new weapons or armor, there are no side activities, no secret bosses or anything like that. It's basically the Last of Us, everything to look at and nothing to do. I remember when one of the developers said they were concerned about the direction Final Fantasy gameplay was going. They were correct.

Imagine taking Kingdom Hearts and doing to that what they have done to this game. Naoki Yoshida, I expected better from you.

I was excited after seeing all of the positive buzz but I am super disappointed in the final product. It's like they have all of the ingredients except for one... Fun. The game is impressive and so many ways except for the gameplay. It could be some of the most bland and uninspired trite I've ever encountered in a AAA game. The environments, music, SFX, ect. All that stuff is great... But, the actual game part sucks. Everything cool that happens in a fight is literally handled with a QTE. Like it's 2006 or something. There's entire boss fights that are 90% super long cutscenes with QTEs. I seriously have no idea what game all these reviewers were playing.

And this is completely glossing over the fact that they give you these "cheat" items at the start of the game that completely trivialize combat. Items that automatically pull off the optimal combos, auto dodge attacks, auto heal you, etc. There's literally no incentive NOT to use them. At the start of the game they've ask you if you're okay with action, or if you'd rather just enjoy the story. Even if you pick "Action" they STILL give you the items. The story started off strong, VERY clearly trying to copy Game of Thrones. Hell, there's even a Dire Wolf that was "found on a journey from the northern region". But after a few hours it turns into Final Fantasy melodramatic drivel. Deaths mean nothing, huge plot holes, confusing character dialogue, etc.

There are various "eras" of Square history. There's the 2D classics, the early 3D offerings, the "1000 spin-offs" era, and now we appear to be in the "VFX" era. I certainly hope you like sparks, smoke, explosions, and other various VFX. Because you're going to see them EVERYWHERE in combat. To the point where you can barely see what is happening on screen sometimes.

Overall the game is pretty...but that's all. It's all flash, no substance. A high budget version of a bargain bin action adventure.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's start with the good parts:
The OST is phenomenal, I'll be buying it because of how good it is. One of the best music in FF series. The battles are also interesting change. There's also many of interesting characters but..

    and here're the worse parts
while the characters are interesting, most of the fate of the characters is ...not good. So anyone who plays games for the characters and the story having a happy end, should double check if they want to play it.
The story don't have a lot of twist. It's all pretty much straightforward and predictable from start to finish. I'll be more surprised with characters living than them dying every minute. It came to this point that a moment that was supposed to be emotional made me immune and numb to it. I felt nothing because of how many deaths Yoshi-P decided to include in this game. I stopped caring about the characters fate

The ending ..is not done in a good way. It's sad that they took ideas from FFXV for the ending and by this I mean, how bad it is.

There's a weird blur in the game that can make you dizzy sometimes. I played with the "graphics" setting, so I don't know if it only exist in this setting. When monsters (most of the time the flying ones) are far away from you, it looks like they're moving in 15 FPS.
In one scene it was very obvious the FPS dropped below 30 FPS

I don't think I'll be interested in FF17 if the atmosphere is going to be similir to FF16. I play games to uplifting me but this game sadly did the opposite. I'm a long time FF fan, so this saddens me to be honest
It's not a bad game per se and if someone loves games like this, they're going to love it

The physics are beyond horrible. The lighting effects are a joke. The story is complete trash. It is the typical "muh dark mature story" cliche garbage beloved by toy-collecting Millennials. Maybe if these developers were more mature about developing their games than writing cringeworthy stories for bully-victims, this game wouldn't have facial animations as awful as Mass Effect Andromeda. For goodness sake, why are developers so obsessed with exaggerating the dramatic music in games? Enough already. It's embarrassing to be a gamer these days because of stupid garbage like this.

The combat is boring and repetitive. When I pay $70, I expect a combat system with depth and detail. All the developers did is put pretty lights during every move, to give players the illusion that the game is fun. None of that is fun for me. This game fails to add the attention to detail you would expect in a AAA game. There are too many invisible walls in this game, just like the last two arty farty God of War games. Speaking of God of War, there are too many cutscenes, even during the terrible boss fights. I don't want to watch a freaking movie, I just want to punch monsters. The side quests are boring. The level design is poor and so are the camera angles. Dead bodies and plants don't react to your movement. The animations are pathetic.

There is no multiplayer. So once you beat the story, this game will go back to the shelf and collect dust. Charging $70 for a game with no replay value is a cash grab. The greedy developers were too cheap and lazy to implement multiplayer. I am sick to death of these greedy developers increasing the prices of games, only for us to get half of the game. I don't recommend this game at all, unless you want to support laziness.
