This is a classic game that really sucks you in. It has a relatively slow (on rails) start, and it takes a while to have access to (and understand) the overall mechanic. The graphics are deceptive (they aren't technically great), but there's a completeness in it's creative/artistic vision is impressive. And like a lot of Arkane games, it feels wonderful to play... and great to go loud. I just feel sorry we won't have another Arkane game on PS5. Expand

This game is a MUST PLAY. I didn’t think it looked great from the trailers but rented it anyway. Man was I surprised when I got so addicted to it. It’s so much fun. The only criticisms I have is Julianna is too under powered and the online is laggy. Still a solid 9/10.

Good premise and fun gameplay. It's a really fun stealth game, sadly the action gunplay feels a bit stiff. Buy if you love stealth games.

I picked this game up with very little knowledge of it and had no expectations, and it’s totally blown me away. The only negative points I can agree with are the camera movement is definitely too slow, and I did have one annoying crash after the Charlie mission. Performance has been completely fine and solid apart from that one issue, though.

Aside from those points, the game has been a total joy. Utterly unique aesthetic and game world, compelling story and addictive open playground style gameplay reminiscent of great FPS games of the past (Half Life 2, Goldeneye etc). Graphics simply aren’t “ps3 era”, some of the lighting and shadow work is exceptional (and that’s even without ray tracing), and the art direction carries it to another level.

Gunplay may not be COD style snappy and quick, but it’s not that type of game. It’s more of a sim style FPS akin to Deus Ex, Prey and obviously Dishonoured, and it’s top tier thin that genre. I think perhaps a lot of younger gamers maybe aren’t familiar with these games since they’ve gone out of style a bit, but the game does what it sets out to do very well. Yes, the AI can be stupid, but that’s part of the point of these games. It’s the same as MGS - you learn their movements and behaviours, learn your own skills and abilities and treat the game as a playground. Story is well written, compelling and hilarious. It kicks in to gear after about 5 hours or so, it’s absolutely worth sticking with it while it lays the groundwork.

Overall, my favourite true next generation game so far. A completely surprise, but a welcome one.

Deathloop has by far some of the most unique and deep level design i have ever seen. Events and accessible places change from morning, afternoon, noon and evening. One map feels like it contains several levels worth of content in it at times too.
All of the visionaries are unique and the witty banter between colt and juliana is perfect.
This game WOULD be a 10, the glitches do pull it

The story is just ok, but you don't really buy and play a roguelight time loop type of game for a story. So that is to be expected. Rather, the background lore, the characters, and the clues and information you learn about everything as you loop through each day is what makes this game great.

But take note: If you are the type of player who hates reading notes or listening to audio logs to get clues or learn objectives, and would rather just start shooting enemies - this game is NOT for you. That's not going to work well.

    PVP Multiplayer Element - 10

The PVP multiplayer is the part that makes this game interesting, and it's ignored by many reviewers. Your main character Colt will have real live players "invade" as Julianna to try to kill you. This is not "run and gun" deathmatch. This is strategy heavy slow moving game play and there's nothing like it. If you want or expect matches like Call of Duty this isn't it. You can't play it like that or you will die. Better aim or faster reflexes alone won't win, you have to outsmart your opponent. There are complaints on line about lag, but it's not the game's fault. Since it's peer to peer a good match requires good connections on both ends. When that happens you have a good lag free game.

If I were to look at this game as single player only I would give it a solid 8. But with the multiplayer PVP element it's something special. Not perfect or "IGN 10/10" by any means but a real 9/10. When you finish the single player campaign, which is greatly extended and increased in difficulty if online is turned on allowing human invaders to challenge you, finish the game and become an invader yourself and enter other people's games. There is a reward system with weapons, mods and outfits to encourage you to keep playing.

All in all a very unique and fun game. There's nothing like it really. It's not a reskinned Dishonored at all Arkane really came up with something new this time around.

The game can be played a few different ways. If you'd like to use Colt's powers and blow through a level like you're playing Doom, you can. If you want to treat the game like a stealth sandbox a kin to MGS, you can also do that. Colt is very customizable, and you will be able to switch back and forth very easily at different points in the game to fit your needs.

The art style and music are great, and help to create a unique atmosphere around the game.

The game's progression is also very rewarding, borrowing elements from the game's rogue-like peers, while still being a mostly narrative based game. The game has some metroid-vania like elements, and does a great job playing with the idea of the loop bringing Colt back every day.

The gunplay won't blow your mind, but it's much better than the game's main contemporary on next-gen, Hitman 3.

I gave the game a 9, since I really enjoyed the 20 hours I put into it. The pacing is good, the art style is unique, and Blackreef is a solid sandbox.

Overall great game! Finally, a game which makes something different and has a new and great concept. The timeloop mechanics mixed with the story is very interesting. The gameplay works good as well. The game is not too long which is nice as every hour is fun and doesn't feel like work (like e.g. some Ubisoft games). Can totally recommend!

I love this game. I started playing it with no expectations. In fact, the only reason I got it is because we have very few PS5 games available these days and I really wanted to make sure I tried something that was meant to run on this beautiful dust collector I got for myself almost a year ago.

And oh boy am I glad I bought Deathloop. First of all the game feels original to me.

In fact, the only reason I got it is because we have very few PS5 games available these days and I really wanted to make sure I tried something that was meant to run on this beautiful dust collector I got for myself almost a year ago.

And oh boy am I glad I bought Deathloop.

First of all the game feels original to me. People here keep talking about Dishonoured, but I never played that game so I had nothing to compare it to. Some have even brought up Hitman as a possible source of inspiration for the game, but I don't really see the similarities. I have been a Hitman fan for years and I just don't see it. Deathloop seems a lot more interested in telling a story, something Hitman gave up on a long time ago. Gameplay is also drastically different here.

Something else I liked about Deathloop is its aesthetics. The world is simply gorgeous. It reminded me of this game I played ages ago called XIII which had this comic book look and style to it. I played the game in Performance mode, which was great. The ray tracing option is fantastic as well, but framerate drops to 30 which bothered me since I quickly got used to 60 fps in Performance mode.

The story is great, the side missions are unique and original (though their rewards don't match the effort you put in to get through them), and the gunplay is just phenomenal. The DualSense really made the experience special for me, and my only complain is that I wish they had put together a larger arsenal. Come on, the over-the-top gameplay and gun battles is screaming for crazier options (i.e. flamethrower, meat grinder, bazooka, etc.).

I'm now trying my hand at the multiplayer and I really hope people will get into it because I'm having a blast. Playing Julianna and stalking Colt is really a lot of fun.

I will end by sharing my biggest complain with the game (and the reason I can't give it a 10) which is the fact that the game often crashes on me, to the point where it can get very annoying. This new trend that has games being released half broken is starting to bother me and I would have given Deathloop a 5 if I hadn't had as much fun as I did.

Again. A great game. In my opinion, a must-buy for PS5 players.

Deathloop dares to do something new and in an age where yearly sports games are often top sellers, it’s no surprise that many people don’t like the break from ‘generic first person shooter’ that their used to in most triple a games. The a.I. Is a little lacking but the graphics, while not perfect are far from outdated, they’re styled in a way that gives the game a fantastic aesthetic. The gunplay is better than that of dishonoured, it could be a little more rounded but I quite enjoyed the slight clunky feel to the weapons, considering their mostly high power, close range weapons. the game reveals its hand a little to fast at the beginning and clears some of the major mysteries too fast, that being said there was plenty to keep the plot rolling till the end.

Many of the people playing this game are unaware that half the game is exploration and learning. Your not buying a shoot’em’up when you buy deathloop, the mass murder is only half the game. The other half is sneaking around, manipulating your targets, lining them up to be in the same areas at once, and preparing for your murder charge. You have to be willing to enjoy and embrace the exploration as its a requirement to reach the more satisfying battles when you got 3 targets in the same building at once, (For example). If the flashy gunplay in the trauilers was what brought you here than your gonna need to get used to the other side. Don’t be mistaken, the exploring and learning isn’t a drag, its quite fun, as is most sneaking around in any arcane game. But if your gonna hate every second of it don’t bother.

one refreshing thing about deathloop is putting its trust in the player. There are no difficulty options, and you will find some parts a breeze, and others painfullly irritating. If you keep dying against the same visionary over and over again, that’s the game telling you that you need to let that one go for now and bet better knowledge, gear or tactics. Not many games will let you throw yourself at a hurdle, knowing your not gonna get over it. If something is too hard, then you need to work around it, put the target somewhere else, come back at a different time of day, try a different approach, try being sneaky. The game wont tell you this, you just have to have the brain cells to figure it out. yourself.

Deathloop is great, fantastic even. its not without minor flaws but they were never enough to keep me even remotely held up on them. frankly this game doesn’t quite exist anywhere else and i recommend giving it a shot. But remember its and arcane game, not an activision, gearbox or blizzard game, know what your buying and whether you’ll enjoy it. once your past the start you have to figure **** out yourself, and the fact that the game puts any trust in the players ability to think instantly sets it apart from the herd.

note: the game is a little more linear than you would expect. you’ll often go into an area with an objective. While in the area you can in fact do anything you want, but you’ll often stay on track for the objective you set yourself. This doesn’t take away from the game though, in fact i believe it strengthens it.

It's not an easy game to explain and it will certainly not be everyone's cup of tea but the negative reviews I've read mainly stem from stability issues or a general dislike the genre: that roguelite immersive sim where you need to look for clues instead of being streamlined down a road and looking at icons on a map.

It's an excellent game that truly uses what the medium permits that other mediums don't. It's an investigative game where you have to make sense of the worldas you go through loops. The important thing then is that the world building is very strong and supported by great characters and a solid gameplay as you can expect from an Arkane game.

There's a lot of depth here, enough that after 20h I'm still discovering playstyles and tricks.
Similarly, the level design shines as you play through levels again and again, learning all their secrets, which transform your first fumbling attempts into precise, efficient, ruthless affairs later down the line.
Then that same depth translates into the invasion multiplayer where all the knowledge and skills you've acquired are pushed to their limits in a game of cat and mouse. Just remember you can go in offline mode if you want to take a break from that.

Special mention to the art direction, music and voice acting of the game which are all top of the line and make immersing yourself in this a joy.

Its main issues come from performance and UI.
On PC, though I've not had any really poor experiences, I do get some noticeable framerate drops in certain parts of each level. They don't really impact gameplay but it's not enjoyable nonetheless.
As for the UI, the lack of an in-mission inventory to see what you've already collected and the pretty messy Loadout screen in between missions take some getting used to.

To conclude: Deathloop is an excellent game for what it aims to be, but it's not a genre that is hugely popular or accessible so it's perfectly normal not to enjoy it, but if you do, oh boy are you in for a treat. Easily my GOTY so far. At least give the OST a listen.

They give it a bad review. Honestly, you're complaining because a game isn't easy, which is lame. The game is a challenge, it isn't supposed to be a straight up simple shooter. Also, another complaint is the levels, that there are only four or that they are too small. These people clearly haven't played the game passed the early stages. Each level at each time period is different, with whole new level stages and different enemy layout, so no not just 4 levels there are 16 technically. Also, once you actually play the game a bit, especially play it online, you understand the level design better, the design is kind of brilliant because it is designed to work as a single player and multiplayer map. Playing online you get to see how thought the levels are small, they have an almost open world aspect to them as you can leap through the map and climb almost everything, finding caverns and extra rooms depending on which time it is. To those dissing the graphics, I don't know maybe you have a bad TV, I thought the graphics, along with level design and character design were awesome and unlike anything I've seen before in a game. The gunplay does take a little while to get used to. It isn't like a typical FPS because this game isn't really a typical FPS, the use of powers which you progressively get make the pacing of the gunplay much more clear, I thought it felt awkward for the first couple of hours I played the game too, then it kind of clicked and I saw how it worked. Anyway, the hate is totally unwarranted and comes from people not understanding what they are getting into (even though the first two hours+ of the game explains it all to you). A lot of people complain about things that are just part of how the game is supposed to be. If you don't like it, fair enough, but to suggest this is a bad game is ridiculous. Also, clearly there is a campaign against the game, this has biased and distorted the reviews. A lot of people likely went in with all the noise from the campaign and had it bias their perspectives too. It is too bad because we cannot actually get a genuine review of what players actually think of the game because there are so many zeros and low scores that are by people who haven't played it or who went in with no intention of liking it, not fair reviews of the game. The bad reviews, and mediocre reviews are full of clear misunderstandings of the game mechanics and design right off the bat that people who actually have played through the game more than just a little bit, have done the whole online bit, and really dug into the game know right away these reviews are from biased brains who haven't given it a fair chance at all. Bought the game on impulse and was pleasantly surprised. Mechanics felt fluid, really fun concept and great story. Only thing is certain slabs felt pretty game-breaking (Looking at you shift slab) and pretty much let you breeze through the game once you have it.

This is just Waypoints: The Game. That beeing said. The sandbox is extremely fun.

    Pros:
    - The powers are great
    - Characters are fun
    - Artstyle is fantastic
    - You can really let your creativity out
    - It's very fun

    Cons:
    - Multiplayer just doesn't work (at least at launch)
    - There's no freedom in how to solve the main puzzle. You just have to follow the waypoints

Deathloop was incredible. I just finished and I'm already planning to play through again. I loved the cause and effect mechanics in the game that would have a butterfly effect as you progressed. I also enjoyed trying. all of the weapons, gadgets, and unique abilities. My only (very minor) issue was the ending could have been a little better.

The only gripe I have is that multiplayer is the default when I just wanna engage with the single-player experience. I'm glad the option was available to shut off the invading aspects. Deathloop is basically dishonored+hitman+groundhog day. The goal of the game is to find a way to assassinate 8 people that are keeping a time loop intact, while also having to worry about a rival assassin trying to prevent you from doing so. The game is executed very well, really the only issues I have with it are that the game is pretty buggy, and there's performance problems.

I love Arkane's work. Dishonored and its story DLC is arguably my favourite stealth/immersive sim game and I always find myself replaying it. I don't adore Dishonored 2/DOTO nearly as much, but still think they're enjoyable experiences in their own right. Prey is fantastic, criminally overlooked, and its DLC, Mooncrash, is possibly even better. It seemed like this game was meant to be the idea of Mooncrash expanded into a full-blown experience. The end result is a game that's *fine*, but far from Arkane's best work IMO.

The concept is cool, but the story and characters end up being just ok. Colt is an entertaining protagonist, but not a whole lot is done with Juliana and a lot of the stuff with her, particularly her relationship with Colt and the loop, falls flat due to the lack of character development/screen time. I also think the three possible endings are all pretty lacklustre, but I doubt narrative is the reason people play Arkane games.

Investigating the eight visionaries and planning a route where you can assassinate all of them to break the loop sounds like a neat concept, but is botched where it counts. Investigating is largely non-linear, suffers from a bit of hand-holding, but is ultimately satisfying. The problem, is that there's only one route you can take to break the loop. Certain visionaries have to be killed in certain places, and at certain times, which kills a lot of potential replay value. There's also no option to go non-lethal with these guys, which I'm sure most won't take issue with, but it's definitely worth mentioning. I know that the idea of violence and murder is core to the theme and narrative but I think a lot of people play these games for player choice.

Speaking of player choice, there's an okay amount of it here, but its extremely lacking in comparison to games like Prey and Dishonored. The biggest offender is that you can only have two of the five powers equipped at any given time, and you can't change this until you move to another district. I'd argue that most players will have Shift on most of the time for traversal's sake, meaning you only have one slot for whichever power you want. Additionally, none of these powers are particularly unique or new. Karnesis is similar to Windblast, just with directional inputs. Nexus works like Domino, just as an AoE projectile now, Shift is Blink, Aether makes you invisible, and Havoc has you deal more damage and take less. For a game that encourages you to 'play your way' it feels needlessly restrictive and watered down because of the lack of unique powers and equipment.

There are some things the game does well, like the Infusion system which allows you to bind items to Colt cross-loop. You really have to think about what to spend your Residuum on between runs, which makes for some great delineation of what to keep and what to chuck Player controlled Juliana invasions are great, incredibly tense and arguably the best part of the game when it works. The initial groove of building up an arsenal of powers and weapons has a strong sense of progression, and you really feel like you learn about the loop alongside Colt. Gun-play feels great overall, weapons are fun to play around with, great soundtrack, sense of style, and theme.

    Random thoughts
    - Weapon rarity feels half-baked and pointless
    - Opening hours/tutorial sections are boring
    - Districts seem big at first, but are quite small, and lacking content
    - AI is way too easy for a game like this, and lacks difficulty options

I think that this game will do wonders for some, and I'm glad that they can enjoy it for what it is. I think if you haven't played Mooncrash, the novelty and concept of the loop will carry a lot of the experience. For me, this just didn't hit, and I'm disappointed because I was really excited for it. I don't think it's bad per se, but not worth it at full price, especially given its technical state which I won't comment on, there's enough of that around already. It's a perfectly fine game, but if you like Arkane game's for their depth, replay value, and player choice, you might want to hold off on "DEATHLOOP" until it's a bit cheaper.

Despite it getting “review bombed”, it is actually a surprisingly engaging experience that can be directly compared to many successful games like Dishonored and even Dark Souls. The thought of starting over again with each death in a “loop” is a concept I originally found intriguing, but wasn’t completely sold on. I didn’t want the game to turn into a boring grindfest that felt impossible to progress in, but thankfully that isn’t how the game functions at all. Progression actually feels meaningful, and with residium (the in-game currency), players can choose to reawaken with certain weapons and abilities they find throughout the game. This actually gives players a decent amount of build customization, and allows for players to approach situations in ways that they want to. The implementation of Julianna is also a unique game mechanic not too dissimilar to how Dark Souls multiplayer works. Another real player can invade your game as a rival assassin named Julianna, and you need to kill her to rid her from your world. Seeing the invasion message always gets me sitting up, and these invasions have been the highlights of my time playing the game so far. Uncovering the real truth and all the secrets throughout the game are engaging, and you can go about these “quests” in whatever order you wish. Despite this freedom, the game is quite small, and ultimately how you beat the game is somewhat linear. This game’s combat and guns feel responsive with a PS5 controller, and the creativity with Colt, the protagonists, unique abilities feels endless. For example I once killed a target by teleporting over a large fall and then swapped places with them, forcing them to fall to their death. Despite its positives, Deathloop does have some glaring negatives. The biggest negative by far is how stupid the A.I. is. You could literally shoot an enemy dead who is standing next to another enemy, and if that enemy doesn’t directly turn to face their dead partner, they won’t even notice. This problem is especially glaring if you play the game stealthily like I do. Another problem I have is that the ability “blink” is way too overpowered. It functions similar to Dishonored’s teleport ability, and it allows for you to teleport short distances. You are given two ability slots, and despite the 8 unique abilities that the game offers, I have still found no reason to not use “blink” as one of the spots. You are actually handicapping yourself by not equipping this ability. Despite its flaws, Deathloop serves as a surprisingly engaging and fun experience in a year where most games have been delayed. To break the loop, you must eliminate 8 visionaries in the same day but the antagonist, Julianna Blake, who also retains their memory between loops stands in your way. Each day is divided into 4 time periods and you can visit 1 of 4 distinct areas. As targets only appear in a specific area and time, your job is to investigate to find info and a way to eliminate all targets in a single loop. The game has a rarely seen and striking art style, 1960’s retro-futuristic. If get looped then you will lose all your gear and start back at the planning screen similar to a rogue-like. But unlike this sub-genre, you can find a way to save your gear between loops.

Story wise the game shows its hands very earlier on, explaining the loop. Instead, players must find answers behind Colt’s history and their relationship to Julianna. However, there are still major story gaps once the game concludes. The voice acting of Colt/Julianna is top notch and there is great chemistry/banter when she calls you on the radio, however she does not appear in many scenes after the prologue. Visionaries all have a distinct style and enough reason is given as to why they are deemed ‘bad’ to justify their elimination but the game doesn’t dive deeper in to their background and they have little interaction with Colt.

The game’s USP is the loop mechanic where players can view information or take action to influence events in different time periods or loops. E.g., Preventing a fire that would normally burn down a building to retrieve a key code to get closer to a target. Finding these codes are a big part of the game and they are different for every player (so no cheating) but they are the same across each of your loops. However, I found the game tends to hand hold you too much across each of the leads and even explains how to eliminate all targets once you have completed all the main leads, thereby reducing the detective work/mystery for the player.

You can die twice per time period, with the third resetting the loop. In addition, you can choose 2 out of 5 powers to equip such as Shift a short-range teleportation (Blink from Dishonored) but this feels like a necessity thereby reducing loadout variety. The arsenal is quite small with 8 normal guns and 4 unique legendary ones. The former can come in 3 rarities with the highest, purple/exemplar, having a (mostly) random perk. You can equip up to 4 character trinkets and 3 weapon trinkets per gun that gives buffs. You will learn the infusion ability early on and can find residuum around levels to save gear between loops.

A major critic is poor AI of the NPC enemies in game who have awful stealth detection and you can easily funnel them down a corridor if you go loud. As you defeat visionaries, the loop stress increases which means enemies have better loot and are supposedly tougher. But I did not find this to be the case, no new tactics and headshots are still effective. If there are targets still in the map, then Julianna can invade your game (NPC controlled). She poses more of a challenge depending on her power combo, and she locks your escape tunnels so you need to hack an antenna first (always in the same place) before leaving the level.

You can play as Julianna and invade other player’s games in a different mode. It has its own ranking up system that unlocks her gear and outfits for both characters, but it is randomised. As Julianna, you are at a disadvantage as Colt has three lives so I found stealth as the best option. It can be very exhilarating hunting down your target in a game of cat and mouse when it works. I have been disconnected a few times due to lag and the match had ended automatically once I loaded in. For Colt, invasion only begins at the start so you can rush Julianna’s spawn point to defeat her quickly. You can turn player invasion on/off as Colt.

Overall, I found the story and premise to be quite interesting and the gameplay was solid for the most part. It did not meet my expectations due to the ambiguous marketing (I expected Dishonored meets the Hitman series) since only 2 targets can be manipulated and there is only 1 set way to be able to break the loop. The four maps do change over time but they felt like the same and became fairly repetitive quite quickly. Deathloop also lacks end game content as there is nothing new to do, with your map knowledge jumping into Julianna’s mode is the best option. Within a week, I broke the loop many times and did some invasions, but I became fairly bored. Deathloop takes ideas from Arkane’s previous games but it is not an extension of them, instead it is an entirely new experience and stands on its own merits.

I cannot recommend purchasing Deathloop at full price on launch but I would suggest waiting for a sale and to watch gameplay videos. I give Deathloop a score of 8 out of 10.

This is really refreshing because often in Immersive Sims you are silently encouraged to find a playstyle and stick to it. In Deathloop you are completely free to try any approach you want because even if it doesn't go to plan you'll have another shot the next day. Throw in the random invasions from Juliana and every loop feels unique.

The story is fun and engaging, however the ending feels rushed, leaving you wishing there had been a little more time spent wrapping things up. There are a few bugs, most notably a menu lockup that can happen (I experienced it twice during my playthrough). When this happens during a run you will lose all progress on the current map (the game only saves between maps). This was a little frustrating, but it's something I'm sure will be fixed soon.

You have Dishonored's stealth mechanics, abilities and unique style, Wolfenstein's excellent gunplay, Prey's storytelling with themes of memory and consequences. It all boils together into an impressive and unique title that really makes you feel like a detective as you try to break the loop. Colt and Julianna's back and forth is amazing and natural, and really pits them as quite impressive rivals of each other with different goals. My favorite part is they both make excellent points to support both of their arguments, leaving it up to the player as to who is right. Solving the loop and figuring out the puzzle of how to kill all of the Visionaries is fantastic, and the infusion system making it so you don't have to completely start over from scratch like in Returnal makes the formulaic looping not get boring or frustrating. My main issue with the game though is the levels themselves. There are only four with differences between the same levels depending on the day which isn't too bad, however I feel that when it comes to this type of game they need to be REALLY interesting. Arkane has amazing level design and that didn't change here, but it didn't show to be exemplary. They are intricate, but other than Updaam they didn't really feel unique or crazy. Dishonored 2 had amazingly unique levels like The Clockwerk Mansion or Jindosh's Mansion where you were jumping between two worlds in time or you would pull a switch to change the entire layout of a room. That just didn't happen with a lot of areas in this game. As for the multiplayer component I will admit I didn't really have an interest in using it, and so the AI Julianna I ran into was either too difficult and killed you immediately or too easy and didn't offer the scary challenge it should be. That is my decision for playing single-player but it should've been developed so she didn't feel like any other NPC. Another issue I had was that I didn't really feel like I had the 'choice' to go in guns blazing like they implied. It isn't as 'play-your-own-way' as they imply. You need to play into the stealth a little bit because NPC's mow you down. And while there are health drinks and stations around, you don't actually have any medkits to heal on the fly so you can take damage and stay in the fight. That would've been something to look into including, since health regeneration only does so much. Having to connect to Bethesda's Launcher, I did find it annoying because I connected the wrong account and there is no way to easily unlink it sothat is fun, but it didn't count against my score. Playing as Julianna is fun too, especially if you go into it as a long-play and don't try to just kill Colt immediately head-on a few times. It emphasizes you playing Julianna as stealthy as you can rather than fighting Colt head-on, and offering outfits for ranking up instead of forcing microtransactions was a nice change of pace, especially with how nice they all look. Overall though this is a very creative and unique stealth game with good gameplay and some issues going on regarding the level design and AI but has a lot of fantastic redeeming qualities. Expand

I very much enjoyed this game. The environments were well designed, the puzzles were a lot of fun to play, and I loved the soundtrack. The looping mechanic was an interesting take, though the novelty had somewhat worn off by the time I finished the game. The banter was my favorite part of the dialogue. Very solid game.

I did have a few bugs, I have to say, this game feels unpolished. There were multiple graphical glitches, and I even had one crash, which was frustrating. I definitely don't agree with this being a 10/10 game. My honest opinion is 7/10, but I'm giving it an 8 because I think it's worth playing and I feel like review-bombers have done quite a bit to bias the true user score.

The gameplay mechanics are great, I like this new take on gaming which encourages thinking in combination with desstruction, but I suspect that the gameplay might become repetitive, we'll see.

As a big single-player fps fan, this game is a bunch of fun, with one big letdown that drags the score down from a 9 or 10 out of 10 game to a solid 8/10. If you like yourself some BioShock, Halo or any other fps single-player game (heard its a lot like dishonored also from arkane, which I haven't personally played) then death loop is definitely worthwhile for £50 GBP or less.

Anyone saying this does nothing new couldn’t be more wrong IMO - there’s nothing quite like Deathloop.

If it’s a niche game, I fit well within that niche. It pulls gameplay elements from a wide variety of different games into one in a really unique way. Just to name a few examples:

    - In a way, it feels like a shooter/action spin the Outer Wilds gameplay loop (one of my favorite games ever). Progressing the story is one big puzzle - taking clues and information you find to get further on the next loop, slowly piecing together the correct sequence of events together to complete the story. - It’s kinda rogue-lite, but don’t let that scare you away if you aren’t a fan of that genre - it takes all the things I love about roguelites while cutting out the things I dislike. It isn’t an endless grind and as you progress, you’ll be able to keep your favorite weapons for future loops. In some ways it feels more like a metroidvania. - It’s a sandbox style game, allowing you to approach things in a variety of different ways. It reminds me of Hitman in that sense… though the actual gameplay mechanics are very different from the Hitman games. - The PvE gameplay mechanics are very similar to Arkane’s own Dishonored, without the guilt trip over killing NPCs. - PVP works a lot like Dark Souls invasions, but are significantly better integrated into the story. This does a lot to keep you on your toes and should add some replay value. Now there are definitely flaws - the AI is exceptionally dumb and combat is way easier than I would have preferred. There are also bugs that need to be worked out. All said, I’m really enjoying my time with Deathloop so far - aside from RE8, this is the most hooked I’ve been on a game in 2021 so far. I didn’t expect much from this one, but it’s been an excellent surprise.

It is a quite decent game. Doing something original, with good taste and good graphics. The characters are fun, and the idea itself too!!

In the end, you are so powerful after 5 to 6 loops that:
    - It feels like cheating (being invincible you can make almost anything you want)
    - It ends up being a bit repetitive,

    But overall I’d recommend it

It may seem unfair to compare to another game by the same studio, but the powers are straight out of Dishonored 2. The only difference is that you can only equip two at a time (and only four trinkets) which was a huge letdown for me. It's a real bad time when you find a cool new power that is slightly less useful than your current one and you have to leave one behind. Or you realize a situation would be easier with a certain power or trinket that you didn't bring along on the mission. I understand that it is a difficulty and strategy mechanic, but it makes the game less fun and more frustrating.

If, like me, this compels you to collect all of the slabs and weapons in order to complete all of the leads-then this is a very repetitive experience. There may be quite a few (sometimes frustrating) main targets, but there are only four levels with minor variations depending on the time of day. And each target only has one or two methods of disposal, so it isn't like the Hitman games where you can try different methods.

There are also secrets hidden throughout the levels that can be interesting, but for the most part are quite a letdown. Spending an hour carefully working out a puzzle is really disappointing when your reward is a copy of the trinket that you already have 5 copies of.

Like I said-still a high rating and I did have fun playing it, but some let downs and repetition really hindered the experience.

Expand

However, the game also has some small flaws including the graphics mode that jerks and the same thing for the graphic quality of the enemies that also have a bit too naive ia. The audio sector apart from the soundtrack is too low volume and the artistic direction is not very varied. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For starters one of the more interesting themes for a game I’ve played in a long time and the story was very good. The dialogue between Colt and Julianna is amazingly written and portrayed even better. The controls are great never had a problem remembering any control binds.
The game has a lot of exposition which if you like that kinda stuff this game is definitely for you. The endgame was kind of disappointing with each of the 3 choices leading you to a rather disappointing ending. The game has some of the worst AI I’ve experienced in a game, on launch day I had lots of bugs and a few crashes but after the first day the game ran smooth with no problems. It took me 14 hours to beat the game, that was with me looking around and searching like I usually do. If you knew what you were doing you could probably beat it a lot faster. I feel an 8 is a pretty fair rating, It’s too bad any PS fan who likes this game won’t be able to play a sequel thanks to MS.

This is my first Arkane game I have played but after playing Deathloop I will definitely be going back to their older titles and paying close attention to future releases from them.

I recommend giving this a try if you have a PS5. My only advice is to be patient and stick with it, the game is best when you can emerse your self and recognize all the unique gameplay opportunities the game provides. If you're looking for a mindless title you can fly through without really paying attention, I wouldn't necessarily tell you to completely stay away as there is still plenty of mindless killing to be had, but I would say that you won't enjoy the game to its fullest possible extent and will really be missing out on a large chunk of what makes the game so special.

The game play isn’t revolutionary and is very much like dishonored. The guns are cool and the powers feel great to use however there’s not many of them thus you are left feeling like you’ve hit your load out sweet spot early on.
The core gameplay and gunplay does feel good although it feels a little sluggish if you are used to something like cod.
The art style is cool although not a showcase for ps5. Everything is crisp and sharp by design but isn’t a show stopper. The AI is pretty poor. NPCs don’t see you when they should and rush you unrealistically when they do.
That being said the game is very good due to all the aspects of the game connecting well and just feeling right. Story is cool and very clever however you have to put in a bit of work to understand everything going on, it’s not spoon fed to you.
I’m having a blast with it and I think 8 is a fair score. Definitely not a 10. Pick it up and give it a try. If you connect with it quickly you’ll find it rewarding and probably finish it if you don’t then you’ll probably give up pretty soon after starting.

Deathloop offers well-designed stealth levels under the core gameplay of Roguelike. At the same time, the variety of weapons and special powers also support the exciting combat. Julianna's "invasion" adds the uncertainty of the game, but may also spoil the player's experience.

I’m honestly surprised, because I did not expect to have so much fun with Deathloop. It draws some gameplay ideas from Dishonored, but introduces time-related mechanics, offers an intriguing story with interesting characters and has its own unique and coherent style. It’s an original game, full of surprises and addictive, but not necessarily easily digestible for everyone. For me however it’s one of the best titles of 2021. [11/2021, p.22]
