I was intrigued by the game's concept and art style, and enjoyed Arkane's previous games. So when the glowing reviews came in for Deathloop, I rushed in and bought it at full price.

Regret doing that now. It's just such an average game. Have played it for about six hours, and don't have the will to carry on. There's nothing new or exciting here at all. It just feels like a poor rehash

It just feels like a poor rehash of Dishonored. The AI and stealth mechanics are poor. And once you get inevitably spotted by an enemy, the combat is very basic and unsatisfying. You can just blast everyone with the shotgun.

The graphics are also quite dull, and there seem to be performance issues like freezing.

If you're still thinking about buying this game, I would wait for a deep sale.

Good idea, but gameplay is off, from gun combat, and especially jumping. It's just not fun to play with constant reading to know what to do next. The level design is OK, the story is OK, but everything feels pointless. Am 12 hours in, and don't think I can this game anymore of my time

Good but not game of the year good. After completing the main story, I question the wisdom of designing a single player game around repetition. The game is fun and I do recommend people play it. But I can only enjoy the same maps and enemies so many times.

Some real numbers for ya’ all: 25% of players have the trophy for completing the main story. This is actually a high number. The concept seems difficult. You have to perfectly time 8 assassination on 4 maps using only 4 times of day. The game throws up some ill designed inventory and upgrade screens and then directs you with some even worse designed quest screens. Then some missions have items and objects that are unclear. You won’t see any golden outlines around the scraps of papers you need to find. Despite all this, the gameplay mechanics are sound and the smart level design has safe paths to travel to objectives. Eventually the quest system makes sense and you can see a clear path to the end.

The good: Colt is a fun protagonist. He reminds a bit of Nathan Drake only less kid friendly. Some crazy stuff happens and he’ll talk about how some crazy stuff happened. You get the idea. The levels are also well designed, like playing Hitman in an episode of “The Prisoner”. The game has a unique look and feel that is a nice break of fighting in ruins or all metal corridors. The gameplay is solid if not a bit too easy.

The bad: A.I. sucks. Often you can pick out a choke point and let the enemies suicide themselves into your bullets. Sometimes the enemies will run into a wall and keep running. Sometimes a boss character will kill themselves with their own weapon or fall off the map. This mid 1990s A.I. The lack of good A.I. makes the already small scope of the game seem smaller. Having only four maps is great for maximizing developer resources but not as fun for the player. Also, most importantly, the entire premise of replaying maps with the same enemies in the same places makes the game less fun that it could have been. (There are 4 times of day for each map that change up some of the enemy placement on the maps.) I saw nothing about this that looked like a PS5 game except maybe smooth frame rates when a lot of enemies were present. If you want a showcase of current gen power, this ain’t it.

One of the games features is an A.I. or human controlled enemy that will hunt you down. The first time you are alerted to this, you worry that some unseen assassin will snip you from the top of a building. Instead, this one lady shows up and you shoot her dead. Then you do it again and again. The entire game felt this way, meaning easy. Perhaps decades of first person shooters has honed my skills beyond Bethesda’s testers. More likely this feature is half baked. Give the player the ability to turn invisible or speed across the map with super kicks, and the player has nothing to worry about ever.

Another failure of game design is the obvious worry of making the player too powerful, except for options that make the player too powerful. You can turn invisible, but only for a short time. So you go invisible, find a hiding spot, and wait for your invisibility to recharge. Thrilling gameplay. Or you can turn on the ability to gain health from kicking enemies and kill enemies with one kick. Now you can run rampant as a kicking murder machine. Fun but not rewarding. The game will offer up some truly unique weapons that you will use once, realize they are weak, and never use again. Some of the most basic weapons, like a two-shot shotgun or a silenced sub machine gun, are so supremely effective against the dumb A.I. that there is little incentive to experiment. This is what happens when the head of game studio doesn’t play the games that the studio makes.

All-in-all, Deathloop is a unique experience that has a lot of fun moments. Ultimately, I don’t want to see this “rogue-like” genre expand. At the end of Deathloop. I was craving a new level to explore. Something, anything other than the same 4 maps. Replaying levels can be fun. You might want to find the most efficient path or try a no killing play through. It’s fun to have the choice to replay missions. Where Deathloop goes wrong is in taking that choice away from the player. You have to replay the game to finish it. You have to go back no matter how bored you are. 75% of players choose not to. You are more likely to be one of them than not.

As a big fan of Arkane this was a massive disappointment, it feels like a step back from their previous releases in almost every way.

Alright let's start with the story. While neither Dishonored nor Prey were masterpieces in this regard Deathloop is just terrible. Extremely thin characters, boring paint by numbers plot and a shallow world. This is not helped by how zany and quirky everything is, the game tries painfully hard to be a comedy while being maybe the least funny thing I've ever played.

    Visuals:
The game looks ok I guess. It's not great but not terrible, overall I'd say it's pretty close to Dishonored 2 with slightly better textures but with a significantly less consistent and refined art style.

Alright now my main issue, the gameplay. The gunplay is ok however becomes extremely repetitive very quickly and it feels rather clunky, the same is true for moving around the environment which is weird given how smooth and dynamic every last action in the Dishonored series felt.
The powers are pretty much just worse and more limited version of what we got in Dishonored. The Loop gimmick is fun and novel exactly once after which it becomes nothing but an annoyance and a chore.
The game is also extremely easy, to a point where you don't really have a reason for even doing anything except sneaking past enemies or just killing them.
It also quickly starts to feel more like a mildly tiresome chore where you have to deal with minor annoyances while you run from point A to point B where you have to do massive amounts of backtracking through these small, uninteresting and empty feeling areas.

Is it the worst game I've ever played? Definitely not, but at its best it never rises above mediocrity while being outright terrible in other parts.

The voice acting of the protagonist was good but the antagonist just had a shrill “sassy black woman” thing going on that seemed to be attempting a stylized 70s vibe but bordered on parody. Too much profanity for me, especially when the kills seemed tame by comparison. The menus were janky and not conducive to any sense. A lot of reviews have likened it to hitman, but I think that does a disservice to IO interactive's stealth game, as Deathloop doesn't have even nearly as many options when it comes to approaching combat and assassinations. While hitman will offer you a wide variety of ways to approach a situation, deathloop generally gives you 4 at most. You can run in shooting or stealth kill the enemy, and SOME enemies will allow you to pull off a special kill, such as fiddling with something in the environment, however these situations are unfortunately few and far between. The other option is of course to do something to cause the Visionary to move elsewhere so you can pull of multiple kills in a single time frame.

The game is always teasing its final loop where the player has to kill all 7 visionaries in one day using what they've learnt up to that point to get the visionaries all together. This final loop however is let down by the use of waypoints, the game tells the player step by step how to complete this final loop which takes away a lot of the sense of reward for pulling it off. Compare this to a timeloop game such as Outerwilds where the player learns how to finish the game by playing rather than being walked through it, Deathloop doesn't feel even nearly as rewarding to learn or complete.

The Julianna is also a mechanic that sounds great in theory but falls short in practice. The idea is you have a cat and mouse chase with an online invader, and you must kill the player or turn of the satellite and escape. I can see what Arkane were going for with this mechanic, as I had one experience where this played out super interesting and felt tense and rewarding. However almost every single other time I was invaded I killed the invader super quickly, or they camped by the satellite and killed me 3 times in quick succession with a shotgun to the back. With a bit of balancing this mechanic could be as fun as they intended, but as of right now it feels more infuriating than exciting to be invaded.

It's been mentioned by almost everyone that the AI in this game is not up to scratch and its absolutely true, everything that can be said about the AI that can be said has been said, but its worth noting that IGN giving this game a 10/10 with the current level of AI is absolute insanity.

Some things the game does get right though are the environments, the voice acting, and most of all the gameplay. Its the gameplay that really holds the game up, warping around with shift, turning invisible, linking a large group of enemies to take them all out quickly never really gets boring. The Sparta kick is a fun addition and the stealth does feel satisfying. One thing I will mention with the gameplay is it never feels like theres enough range in weaponry. The game in total has about 7 guns, which while they can be pretty heavily customised to feel unique to you never really feels like enough. You get given a machete in the first 10 minutes and I was excited to upgrade or switch it out for another melee weapon, but the game never offers one. The customisation almost makes up for it, but it would've been nice to have a bit more of a range.

So yeah all in all, the game never really manages to lives up to its lofty ideas, but its world, characters, and core gameplay make it worth playing, even if you buy it a little later down the line when its on sale and the AI is fixed.

It’s all set up and premise and no execution. It’s like sitting on the porcelain throne anticipating a massive log and instead only producing a few airy farts and a couple of incidental nuggets. You ate that Chile cheese omelet covered in salsa and your bowels are giving you every indication that they are ready to unleash a kraken of a turd sufficient to clog even the most resilient of toilets, and instead find yourself unsatisfied, unfulfilled, and depressed that your morning glory has failed you.

The most obvious comparison here is the dishonored series, but it’s little more than surface level. The dishonored games were remarkable and were great because they were better than the sun of their parts...the story was fast paced and engaging, the characters memorable, and the world a carefully crafted sandbox allowing for any and every style one may desire. Death loop has none of those things, doesn’t offer anything new, and what it does offer falls short of the games from which these elemtents are lifted.

There’s fun to be had, but it’s maybe 15 hours and will not give you anything near the value that the dishonored series did. So yourself a favor and play those instead.

Deathloop has some interesting ideas, but also some problems that make the game frustrating und break the gameplay mechanics. Let's have a look on those problems:

Sneak mechanism is broken - Some enemies see through walls. They spot you where it makes no sense
    - Other enemies do not spot you when you peek out your face and barrel right in front of them so close you could touch them - That makes the gameplay unpredictable Controls are unprecise and often buggy - Very annoying is the fact that you can't mark some enemies when having them right in front of you until you move a bit or alter the angle
    - Trying to mark an enemy will unwillingly unmark a different enemy. This happens all the time
    - Shift slab (Dishonored style teleport) takes a couple of tries until it will finally snap on edges - really anoying when you are about to be spotted and want to get out of sight fast

It's supposed to be a stealth game, but... - Once you have some nice powerful weapoary it's often better to just quickly shoot enemies instead of taking the time to sneak and avoid any enemies by circeling around
    - When Julianna invades your mission, the game suddenly turns into a shooter, alerting any enemy around and ruining your run
    - It's a disadvantage to sneak around and leave any enemies alive when Juliannas invasions happen, because things get pretty ugly in no time
    - Selection of silenced and melee weapons is way too small

Julianna is a loot delivery system
    - Playing in Singleplayer mode, I found it much easier to just pick the powerful slabs and slab upgrades from Juliannas corpse rather than going after the visionaries that originally drop them. The visionarys are mostly well guarded or prepared with booby traps and turrets. Julianna on the other hand is not a hard enemy to kill and she will come to you
    - Julianna also drops randomized weapons
    - These invasions happen randomly and occur more often when you progress in the game. She ruins about every second attempt to master a level for me. I usually wait for her, kill her and then atrempt to go after my main objective rather then have her drop in at the worst possible moment

    Other annoyances
    - Marked enemies lose the tag. Sometime after a while, sometimes after a distance is between you and them and sometimes just when you look the other way - even when you mute the music there is constant noise from guitar riffs in the levels where an enemy plays the guitar so loud you can hear it everywhere. That's a bad design choice. I have trouble with my hearing and don't wish to be hammered with concurring sounds from all sides constantly
    - no manual saves
    - no pause even in menus, game is still active and you can die while checking dossiers or objectives

Incredible art style, Absolutely addicting game play, really well done character performances, good graphics, and lots of other really well done aspects. There are issues though. For one, the AI is actually terrible. It's really sad to see such awful AI considering Dishonored had some really good AI even for today. Performance is... weird. About 75% of the time it runs at a perfect 60 fps (on performance mode), but that last 25% is mostly just stuttering, but some areas in the game like Dorsey Manor have significant frame rate drops that can affect game play greatly. Last outstanding issue is of course, the AAA game standard as of now, Bugs. Mostly visual, the only bug that required me to actually do something was just a menu glitch. It was easily fixed by just turning the game off and turning it back on. There are some weird graphical bugs like shadows flickering, water flickering, screen flashing black at points, other issues. Then there's the really funny bugs which are just rag dolls freaking out and flying across the map. Despite all these big issues, the game is extremely fun. It feels like a very forgiving rogue-like, or at least has some rogue-like elements. The game is all about trying to kill 8 visionaries in one single loop to break the loop. But you can only visit one area in the game per time of day. You have Morning, Noon, After-noon, and evening. Once you exit the area in the evening, you restart the day and go back to the start. You lose basically everything unless you infuse an item with residuum, which allows whatever you infused to stay with you in the next loop. You can pretty much just keep that item forever as long as you don't sacrifice it, basically just recycling it for residuum. Residuum also resets, and the game encourages you to spend as much as you possibly can before the loop resets and you have to start over. You can infuse weapons, trinkets (upgrades), and Slabs. Slabs are kind of like Bioshock powers. You have Shift, which is like the teleporting from Dishonored, Aether, a cloaking ability which makes you almost invisible, Nexus, basically a stealthy explosion that links everyone caught in the blast, whatever happens to one, happens to all of them. Then you have Reprise, a passive slab that's always equipped that allows you to die 2 times in a single loop before having to restart the whole day at your 3rd death, Karnesis, which allows you to throw around enemies, Havoc, which makes you deal a ton more damage and in return suffer reduced damage, and last there is Masquerade. Masquerade allows you to swap bodies with any NPC you find, letting you disguise as them while they wear your face. Masquerade is only available in multiplayer when you play as Juliana. Speaking of multiplayer, the multiplayer is nothing too special. Some random player can invade your game as Juliana and try to end your loop. That's kind of it. It's nothing too interesting and I don't really care for it. You can turn off player invasions, but you still can get invaded by Juliana, just as an AI which makes those fights significantly easier. I honestly gotta say, this game is awesome if you look past the issues. If you really want to play this game, go right ahead. It usually goes on sale for a little less than half off. If Arkane Lyon could fix the bugs and that absolutely awful AI and that terrible PC port, then I'm sure this game would be even more of a blast. Expand

Interesting game mechanic where you replay the same day like 'Groundhog Day." It's well-executed in the sense that there is a large amount of player agency in the game world, and depending upon the order of the levels you visit, and the actions you take, you can affect future visits in the day, or even other areas. It reminded me a bit of Majora's Mask inasmuch as people go through aInteresting game mechanic where you replay the same day like 'Groundhog Day." It's well-executed in the sense that there is a large amount of player agency in the game world, and depending upon the order of the levels you visit, and the actions you take, you can affect future visits in the day, or even other areas. It reminded me a bit of Majora's Mask inasmuch as people go through a routine that you can affect in various ways. It also reminded me a lot of Alpha Protocol, as there is a large amount of game reactivity and consequences to the choices that you make. The game is filled with puzzles and mysteries, and a lot of the fun comes from discovering how to unlock them for yourself, because although there is some hand-holding in the form of main quest tracking, a lot of the puzzles in the game give little information on how to solve them, and require a lot of exploration and a bit of luck to figure out. The combat is well-implemented and fair. Your character is powerful, but can get easily overwhelmed if you draw too much attention to yourself.

There is one glaring flaw, which is that the game only saves at the beginning of every mission. So if the game crashes, you have to replay the entire level. This is very bad, because there are no manual saves, and levels can take hours to complete. I was finishing up one level and heading towards the exit when the game crashed. Boom. I'm out 1+ hours. This is extremely frustrating. Most games with a single save profile like Dark Souls, or rogue-lite games, save repeatedly while you play. This is good design, and what Deathloop should have had.

Another poorly implemented mechanic are the online Julia fights. Do yourself a favor, and immediately turn off the online feature in the game, because if it's on, other players can invade your world as Julia. These players have been playing far longer than you, and have much better equipment. As someone who lived and died by Dark Souls PvP, this is completely stupid in a game where if you die, an enormous amount of work can be undone. I was killed in 2 seconds by a player-controlled Julia and set back several hours.

Very ambitious game. Most of my problems with the game come from me just not liking stealth-based games - especially FPS stealth games. What I'm getting at is I've never seen so many skewed and dishonest reviews in my life. People put their heart and soul into crafting this game for people who don't understand it or probably even own a ps5 to come in and give it 0/10 scores. There really should be a special place in hell reserved for people who give a decent game anything less than a 5. I even saw a 0 review that literally said 5/10 at the end.
I wish this game was a heavy and hardcore advancement of Prey but with tons of dishonored style powers and guns. I'm dissapointed it's not exactly the kind of game I would have wanted from Arkane's last game I'll likely get on my Playstation... but I'm still glad a game like this exists. It's definitely not a 10 from me for those reasons because I had high self made expectations for it, but it's still above 90% of ALL AAA games in pure soul power and creativity. I'm giving it a 6. This is a TIME LOOP GAME with NO TIME MECHANICS. What a waste of opportunity. One man leaves a company and the rest of the people at the company totally **** it up. I know that sounds harsh but I played Prey Mooncrash right before this. I had perfectly reasonable expectations for this game coming RIGHT AFTER that game and somehow they eliminated everything about an Arkane game with time loop mechanics that you would expect to see. I thought this game was going to be something really special. But there's no timing involved with anything you do and the enemies are all the same. With better stealth options and 8 levels instead of 4 it would have been a 9. Being the game I expected, Prey Mooncrash mixed with Dishonored... like it SHOULD HAVE BEEN. AN easy masterpiece of a game that they SHOULD HAVE been capable of. All the past work to draw on was there! I really hope they support this with some rad DLC before they are totally Xbox's **** eternally. Not because I don't like Xbox, but because I don't have one. I think there's a lot of potential expanding on this game a bit but I'm worried that won't really happen. Game could use an optional state save feature and an optional time limit feature/ extra levels. If they didn't get bought by Microsoft and needed to shift gears to get a new game in the oven for them, I'm sure this game could have lived up to my expectations. Still a worthy game for my collection, really glad I have it. It runs FLAWLESSLY at least on PS5, day ONE. And since it really was basically a PS5 exclusive, they really delievered in a way that no other company can right now. So at least there's that.
I can't really speak for a PC but I have a feeling that PC people pay 3000 dollars for their machines so they will **** no matter what if a game doesn't release with 120fps and 4k day one... so I don't know if I can even take them seriously. Especially after I just saw a THIRD of the reviews giving 0-3 scores with no good reason. Pretending that it has bad graphics, acting like it is buggy to hell. You gotta have a good reason to give almost any game a score lower than a 5 and those were pathetically fake reasons for the scores.
It must be that this game got scaled back when purchased by Microsoft... It really does speak a lot to the talent at arcane that a watered down version of anything else they've been making can be so critically acclaimed.

Along the way, you can pick up weapons and abilities that would help to make your time in Blackreef a lot easier. You also have to solve puzzles to figure out how to get certain visionaries in one spot or digging up information about the island and the visionaries. Some of them are easy, while others are hard and sometimes quite devilish to solve.

The gameplay of the game is the main highlight as it is fun to blast through your enemies known as the eternalists. Each gun feels unique, especially on a DuelSense controller. Most guns have a three-tier system as it goes from common grey, which can usually get jammed during a fight and can only fit one attachment. To rare purple, which not only the guns doesn't get jammed and fit three attachments but they also each have a unique ability. There are also Legendary golden guns that can only be obtained by certain conditions, such as solving certain puzzles or defeating Juliana. The abilities are also fun to use and help you turn the tides of a gunfight when things go south. I mainly used the Nexus ability as it allows me to link enemies and be able to kill them all with one bullet. However, when using the ability, power can be easily drained, especially the more enemies you link up so you have to either risk kill them quickly or wait for power to regenerate before trying again. Karnesis is also one of my favourite abilities as it allows you to throw an enemy into the air with the flick of your hand. You can also upgrade your abilities to make them more powerful. One of them allows you to upgrade Karnesis to throw multiple enemies rather than just one. One other thing you can do in the game is that you can kick people. This is one of the most favourite things about the game as you can easily kick unsuspecting enemies off cliffs and watch them fall to their deaths.

While the gameplay does feel amazing, without mentioning spoilers, there isn't much replayability after finishing the game other than trophy hunting, in which the majority of them are killing visionaries under certain conditions. However, there's a mode that allows you to play as Juliana by invading other people's games, which allows you to earn rewards. I only played a bit and I find it quite hard not only that I'm not the greatest shooter compared to other people. But also the fact that you have to try and kill the other player three times due to their reprise ability, which let cheat death twice before being forced to start the whole day again on the third. Playing as Colt, this ability makes the game a little too easier. I would have preferred either a mode where you don't have the ability or having fewer revives to make the game more challenging.

On the PS5, there are three visual modes in terms of graphics that are all aimed at dynamic 4K scaling: Performance, which focus on a steady 60FPS, Visual Quality, which focus more on the graphics but aims for 60FPS with drops, and Raytracing, which have a higher visual quality including raytracing but at only 30 FPS. I've mainly have the game at Visual Quality mode as the frame drops are hardly noticeable, but I am disappointed that the game doesn't have a mode where it allows raytracing at 60FPS for the sacrifice of graphics and resolution, especially for someone who doesn't have a 4K screen like myself. Hopefully, Arkane Studios may make an update for this in the future as of writing this review. Despite this, the graphics certainly get the job done for the experience even though it doesn't amaze me throughout the game.

All in all, Deathloop is a good game that allows you to loop around maps and kill enemies in style, but its lack of replayability post game makes your day in Blackreef feels short.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. More like. 7.5/10 but didn't have that option. Not that bad game on PS5. Some minor bugs on my end but I didn't experience anything game breaking. Only major thing was getting stuck in menu when selecting outfits, guns etc. Gameplay not too bad but have to get used to. PVp is severely lacking and should be nixed as those with lag have major advantage. Keep the Juliana AI invasion option.

For pve, silent option is always the best by the way. AI can go from seeing your toe stick from a bush to being blind as a bat. I do love the different ways of killing the min "bosses" who you can choose to face head on and have a real fight; or get successful in being sneaky and one shooting them to the head aka Dishonored. I feel the negative comparison to dishonored are somewhat disingenuous and lacking in some regards. Yes, the same company made them but they are different in their own little ways. Granted, if you didn't like dishonored or like the gameplay of the time loop and having to restart loops then this game won't be for you. Plus, prey was better than these games anyway.

The sound when using headphones is great. You can hear things like water droplets from a leaking pipes behind you and a conversation happening beside you. It is very good at making you feel immersed in the game. The music is great and goes well with the style of the game.

The game is extremely fun to play and could spend over an hour on just one objective trying to go through defeating all the enemies. I would say the gameplay is the best thing about this game.

I enjoyed the storyline which I found interesting and easy to follow. On top of the interesting looping concept.

The online mode is fun when it works (but it rarely does). You can spend 10-15 mins waiting to connect for a 5 minute game.

The AI are okay in this game. When you are spotted, not every NPC finds you straight away unless you are in a crowded area. They can also lose sight of you if you run away fast enough. I find they are pretty realistic compared to other games. They can be a bit too easy though.

I dont like the in game menu as you spend ages in this trying to upgrade your gear and it can be confusing at first.

Overall this game is really fun to play for a few hours. For me the only things that bring it down is the online play, the in game menus and the fact that the AI can be easy to run away from.

The gameplay is a bit repetitive. There are fun abilities you can use like the teleport and the havoc ability, which lets you throw enemies around, but in order to obtain and level up these abilities, you'll have to do some grinding. Another part of the gameplay is finding clues to discover how to take out all the visionaries in the same day by making efficient use of the 4 times of day completing objectives in the 4 levels, all of which require completion at a certain time of day. This was fun to do.

Deathloop was a very decent experience, which took me around 18 hours to complete, but probably not an experience I'll play for a second or third time.

A fun game but far too Linear. Gives the illusion of having multipal ways to play etc but following waypoints is how you progress.....only one(ish) way of doing the final loop is disapointing.

I honestly don't understand how this is a 10/10 for so many professional critics. I would never understand why this is 10/10 "must buy" etc. and all that because to be honest I think this game came out during a period of video game draught and it was one of the first action games to launch as exclusive to PS5 that most people were hyped over. 6/10 at best for me personally. It's like going back in time and playing a PS3 game, only with better resolution. Everything else feels like it was made 15 years ago. Nothing worse than an FPS that doesn't allow you to interact with anything at all in the world, even shooting objects or knifing walls renders dissapointing results that I'd have expected in the Playstation 3 era.

Compared to Dishonored games, Deathloop is definitely not as mysterious in its storytelling, but it would be a lie to say that characters and the world are not charming and wonderful. If you've enjoyed Dishonored's gameplay, this is that but crazier and more open to a non-stealth approach. Highly recommend.

First, I would give this an 8 if it weren't for the game breaking menu freezing bugs which can cause you to lose up to 2 hours' playtime and progression. I've had this happen 3 times and wish I had waited until the game was patched.

The gameplay is fun - until 80% of the way through and then it becomes a bit tedious. I gave up with 2 trophies for the plat - I just wasn’t enjoying the repetitiveness. I just couldn’t go back to that one’s really at the same time of day for the 100th time.

The gunplay and skills felt a bit clunky but the dialogue, planning of story discovery were excellent.

It didn't keep my interested for long, I played for about 4 hrs and went back to an old game. I generally don't like time travel in games or movies. Playing the same maps feels like its set up for multilayer only. I think the user score 5-6 is about right.

Critiques seem heavily biased on this.. The game is fun at times but only OK overall. it definitely IS NOT a masterpiece. It has potential with some unique qualities but fails to deliver in some core areas. Especially with the foundation of its PvP aspect which has a MASSIVE sustainability problem for longterm (explained further below).

It has potential with some unique qualities but fails to deliver in some core areas. Especially with the foundation of its PvP aspect which has a MASSIVE sustainability problem for longterm (explained further below).

AI is weak--they don't react to sound very well (shoot a gun multiple times on a rooftop and them still seem lost) and their vision is way too narrow. Fairly dated stealth mechanics to be honest. They also don't engage in firefights well and are predictable--easy to get them into chokepoints and they just lack awareness. They do not flank and are linear in design (no special classes outside of "long, mid, short, and melee range"). They will improve in weapons over time of your progression but it doesn't actually do that much in increased DPS and does not impact the game much either. I believe AI is weak to compensate for player invasions which creates an extremely poor balance between the two. If you don't get invaded by a player (which can be quite often especially since player count is not very high), then you have only the AI to face. Quite simply, a reliance on PvP for a challenge. AI needed a Heavy class (immune to headshots) and a Nullifier class (immune to Slab attacks and abilites) along with maybe a combo of the two. Just needed more overall. Balancing between players can come elsewhere. Controls on PS5 need improvement especially with weapon handling. Sensitivity and acceleration are just off feeling and this is the first game I resorted to snap auto aim which I LOATHE due to it being a cheat. But I just couldn't get a comfortable feel for the handling without it and was hurting the experience. And I'm someone who plays a lot of PvP shooters and though I prefer fairly specific control settings, I also adapt well. UI could be improved (especially with maps and the layout of objective menu). 3D audio is not the best. Will have multiple times where an item may sound above you but can be right at your feet.

Mulitplayer is horribly unbalanced and VERY laggy due to Peer-to-Peer connection. It's fun when it works but also quite frustrating and I expect PvP to be hard to matchmake in the coming weeks due to lack of players.. The overall game is short, about 20 to 30 hours to fully complete. When you finish the game with Colt, there's no real endgame progression (minus completing side stuff or other endings) to push for PvP. Not even a matchmaking for him to directly play against Juli players on random maps (desperately needed). This in essence kills the 1 side for creating the PvP. Thus Juliannes could be stuck in matchmaking for quite some time if not enough new players jumping in--some hardcore people may repeatedly jump in as Colt but nowhere near enough. There needed to be incentives for players to remain in Online Mode beyond the main story. There also needed to be improved "skill/progression based" MM due to how lopsided games can get. My Colt is endgame (was about 10 hours into playing sadly) and just demolishes both AI and Julianne invaders alike (assuming they actually match make into my game...). I actually don't even stealth anymore it's so one sided. Invasions is a core concept for this game with a poor foundation to operate on. It can be exhilarating when it works and both sides are more of equal progression. But that's fairly rare in my experience.

Overall, some people may enjoy the game as it tailors to a much more casual player base but this does not deserve a Game of the Year level of ratings. Not even close.. Returnal is a better game in a similar genre though much more difficult and not for the feint of heart lol. But it's better put together. I do hope Arkane proceeds with a DLC or sequel as I do see solid potential for a unique design. They just need to improve upon many core aspects.

-Multiplayer is a good addition to the game and matches well with the theme.

    The bad:

    -outdated visuals;

-story lacks excitement, it never really grows on you throughout the playthrough.

-On top of being a time-loop game that assumes you're going to repeat things a lot, there are also missions that require you to do repetitive actions that get boring more than often.

-Occasional bugs that simply crash the game after you pause to check on your mission details are annoying especially after 40 minutes plus missions.

-Lackluster soundtrack, with only two or three music that repeats itself all the time (I guess that's also part of the looping thing?).

The cost of mistake is high: you can die 2 times and next you'll get - a reset of your loot and progress. It irritates the most, as well as due to the plot-driven loot reset. The design and music are great, the story idea too, but...
You'll get fast annoyed on third loop reset by same game locations. There is no story progress feeling: like a hamster, you run around and around in same parts of island, gathering loot and chasing targets like a dog.

Characters completely lacks depths and personality. Juliana, in particular, seems to be be thrown in from the typical docusoap opera. She's obnoxious beyond words. The main protagonist you're playing seems to be likable, until you reach the end when it turns out he's just as shallow as the others. In fact, you almost feel apathetic after finishing the game in how bereft it is from any kind of emotion.

The general gameplay, outside of the shootouts, mostly consist of fetch quests similar to the ones found in recent Ubisoft titles.

After that, you'll begin to get bored because you will know all the 4 maps like your own garden and your character will become OP.

The ending is too short and clearly disappointing. Graphics, animations are still ps4 quality. AI is poor. The game froze on me more than 10 times but with the auto save between each time of the day, you only lose progression in the last map loaded. Still unforgettable but not really a deal breaker.

Overhyped but not crap. It's a solid 6.

Interesting idea with the story, but ultimately let down by poor story telling. The total lack of cutscenes made the visionaries feel very undeveloped as characters. No meaningful interactions with any of them, so they felt completely distant and I wasn't interested in their stories as a result. Barely any weapons to use meant gameplay became dull and repetitive. Combat also felt generally outdated, from the behaviour and look of the AI, to the use of weapons and abilities. Expand

Eh. Game is fine. Gameplay loop is solid but that’s about all it has. Somewhat interesting setting and premise but not executed well. Visual design is good. Colt is a cool character. But everything is mediocre to just decent. Reviewers gassed it up too much

The game is good and worth playing. I loved previous games from Arkane like Dishonoured. I spent a huge amount of time hunting down every secret, opening everything etc. in Dishonored and had a lot of fun. If you liked Dishonored you will like this deathloop. I waited till it was on sale due to the crazy PS5 prices and at first i really enjoyed it.

As the game went on i kept running into bugs. I would e.g. kill a boss, then the game would hang when i looked at updates to the story. Afterwards i would have to restart and lost all progress. This happened several times in a day and i must have wasted 6 out of 9 hours playing. If you wait a while i'm sure all this will get patched out and the game will be perfect.

I did start to get bored of the same limited areas. Sure they open up as you keep playing however it's not the same as e.g. hollow knight where actual new zones are available. I had fun, though i prefered the earlier games like dishonoured. Overall its a good game and worth playing. I would wait a while for more bug fixes and a sale.

Deathloop offers well-designed stealth levels under the core gameplay of Roguelike. At the same time, the variety of weapons and special powers also support the exciting combat. Julianna's "invasion" adds the uncertainty of the game, but may also spoil the player's experience.

I’m honestly surprised, because I did not expect to have so much fun with Deathloop. It draws some gameplay ideas from Dishonored, but introduces time-related mechanics, offers an intriguing story with interesting characters and has its own unique and coherent style. It’s an original game, full of surprises and addictive, but not necessarily easily digestible for everyone. For me however it’s one of the best titles of 2021. [11/2021, p.22]

Deathloop is Arkane at its best, combining its system-driven immersive-sim gameplay with a unique and fascinating story set-up. Excellent presentation and style, along with fantastic dialogue and character performances makes Deathloop one of the most innovative games in years and a valuable PS5 exclusive.
