One of the greatest games I've ever played. It can take 5-10 hours to get hooked, but once you are you'll never wanna stop. The sense of community is like no other I've experienced, especially for a single player game.

This is a 'you either get it, or you don't' type game. Give it time, and you will be hooked I almost guarantee it.

After so many rave reviews, and being an older gamer who doesn't really get FPS games so much I was intrigued so much by Death Stranding. I went in with an open mind prepared for something different. I spent 16 hours or so waiting for the game to get good. It didn't.

This game is absolute dross. It is so frustrating to play. The invisible enemies can suddenly appear and make you lose all your stuff, little glitches like having my bike be near the lake at the end of a mission and then is disappearing afterwards, and the fact that you sometimes can't save to try and work around these frustrations.

Everyone talks about the story as being so amazing. I decided to watch the cutscenes for the game on YouTube after I gave up to see what I had missed, and wow it just made me so glad I gave up on it. I just cannot understand what people liked about it. As I watched someone clearly far better at the game and more experienced than me playing through the final scenes of the game I just felt this huge overwhelming relief that I hadn't wasted any more of my life on this.

I saw the two sides of reviews going into this and as it so common on the internet it seems like it was impossible for people to have an objective and balanced middle ground so I was really curious to see what I thought for myself, but my conclusion is clear - from over 40 years of gaming on dozens of different platforms going back as far as loading games on cassette tape, Death Stranding is, without a doubt, the most overrated and frustrating tripe I have ever put effort into playing.

Among the best graphics out there. A truly incredible story and very meaningful. It isn’t the most fun game and I’d consider it more an experience but it’s well worth the play josh take many breaks. It can get addictive eventually after the slow start. My only criticism is the driving. It’s the worst driving physics I’ve ever seen in a game. Otherwise the game played perfectly

I completely pass on Death Stranding when the original came out because it looked a little too weird and I feel into the trap that the gameplay was just walking across the US making deliveries. When the director's cut came on for the PS5 I decided to finally give the game a try after all the hype and I am glad I did. I can see how this is not a game for everyone and some of the first hours are pretty tedious. The story is also very weird and I think Kojima was dropping acid when he thought it up. With that said I did start to enjoy the story and game loop once I got a few hours into the game. Once you get access to vehicles and tools like the zip line, the game is much better. The graphics on PS5, music, and tone of the game all come together really really well, it is actually pretty amazing how beautiful the game is even though the world is basically destroyed. This game looks and sounds better than many "next-gen" games like Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, and RE Village. With all those positives out of the way there are some issues. Like I said the first few hours are a bit slow and this game really isn't for everyone. It is generally a slow paced game with sporadic action mixed in. I found the section of the game in the snow covered mountains a bit draining, I wish that was shortened a little bit. Beyond those complaints, I am really enjoying the game and I wouldn't skip it. If you're not sure about it, buy it on sale. Expand

I was looking for a game to just chill out following particularly hard days of work. Something not too challenging that I can destress with. It definitely is that but what I wasn’t expecting was just how immersive and how much of a piece of art the game is. It’s not quite the walking simulator that many people say about it. I’ve never played another game like it, its gameplay loop is unique. If you have the patience for it then it’ll make you think differently than any other game you’ve played. I’m new to the game but I absolutely love it for what it is. Time flies by when I play this game and it definitely does destress me. Even though it does have tense moments, it’s 90% relaxing and 10% tense. It’s beautiful on PS5 and it runs so smooth.

The story is very interesting and new, the gameplay can be complicated in certain points and very easy in others, the performance on PS5 is sensational, the Dualsense makes you feel the weight of things as if you were carrying them. All this is debatable but that it is a one-of-a-kind game, that cannot be denied.

The Director's Cut provided a fresh and exciting opportunity to experience the game on PS5. The first dozen hours are slow and tedious, but that is kinda the point. The game can be frustrating and challenging, but not in the way games usually are. Kojima tells an interesting story with poignant lessons that are beautifully woven into the gameplay mechanics. There have been few gaming experiences in my life that so neatly combined narrative elements and gameplay with such intentionality. This game challenges so many modern gaming conventions, and I think, it could provide a push to improve many games (especially open-world ones) over the next decade. Expand

May be few extra hours if that .. the extra gear. That is now in the game is cool but majority of it is way late end game and not very much of a chance to use it often which is disappointing .. should’ve added a new game plus .. .. overall I say if you never played death stranding and wanna give it a try pick this version up ! now If you played deathstranding you pretty much already experienced what ever this director cut has to offer But for ten bucks a upgrade it’s worth the ten dollars . .. I’d give it a 7 may be 8 reason being the directors cut doesn’t justify a paying full retail for not enough content to really say this is any different from the original besides the updated graphics ,a few added missions may be a couple of extra cut scenes , and new gear that you can unlock this time around .. it definitely needs a lot more to it,

What this feels like is a metal gear substance trying to charge people full retail for just minor additions .. this is not a final fantasy , this is not shadow of colossus which is a cult classic , or god of war . It’s not a remake ..

If you can pay ten bucks an get the upgrade do it , if you never played the game and thinking about getting it Try it out see if you like it . It’s enjoyable the first time around ..after the second time it’s a game you will need to put down and forget the story to play again

All alone in the world, nearly every person you meet being a hologram while they're safely tucked away in a bunker, this game finds a perfect balance of feeling isolated yet somehow connected to someone somewhere. The bonds you make along the way in this lonely world are it's best asset, and while the gameplay itself is fairly straightforward I found it both charming and fitting for the narrative of this game. The storytelling is without a doubt this game's greatest asset with wonderfully cryptic information drip-fed to you throughout the experience, just to save all the best twists and turns for the very end. I choked up more than once during this journey, especially at the end, and left this game completely satisfied. It truly feels like a once in a lifetime experience, and honestly one I feel as though I could recommend to anyone. Driving through the open world, listening to the beautiful music by Low Roar, and remembering the wonderful characters I met along the way... Yeah, Death Stranding was without a doubt a near-masterpiece. Expand

Don't believe all the negativity-try the game yourself and give it a fair chance.

I didn't when I originally got the PS4 game. Honestly the game is slow to get going but once it does it is fun, unusual, beautiful, and well worth it. And I am not a Kojima fan.

Finally Wide Screen Mode (My Favorite) that combines both modes offering wider field of view running at locked 60 FPS while using native 4K textures for many onscreen resources, only draw back in this mode is the two black bars on top & bottom of the screen, but it might be ok if you're playing on a large screen.

-Gameplay Mechanics: mostly maintained the older mechanics (if it ain't broke, why fix it) but with added flavor of the adaptive triggers & haptic feedback of the PS5 dual sense controller. In game additions; new structures, items and methods of delivery.

-Story: the main story remains untouched from the original release, yet there were few side story missions added that offer more cover of this weird world of Death Stranding.

For veterans or newcomers, this is a very important game in the industry, it is different and unique and it touches on very important aspects in our lives as gamers; the sense of connection & isolation.
Yes the game starts slow but i guarantee that anyone who passes Episode 3 in the game will continue and will enjoy this weird piece of art.

From what started as a simple game of delivering packages from point A to B that I assumed I had already made up my mind on that it wasn’t for me slowly unfolded into becoming an addictive, very well written game of love, betrayal and deliveries. I turned a complete 180 on this game and now happily call this game a masterpiece. But calling it a masterpiece doesn’t do it justice. On my second play through I learned that this game Is a completely unique game that stands out from the rest. But I also appreciate this game isn’t for everyone. The way of the game mechanics in this title isn’t like your standard open world rpg that we are accustomed too. It’s a learning curve that starts off slow but when it kicks in becomes an experience like no other. The look and style of this game is better than most Hollywood blockbusters and any ps5 game to date. It’s graphical detail is way ahead of its time. It has an ensemble cast and they all give stellar performances. And although the story is a slow burn when you get to the closing credits you are left in awe at what you have just witnessed. I was once someone who said death stranding wasn’t for me. So if anyone else is feeling the same I ask you to try again sit down and stick at it. I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed. Expand

It's rather ironic for a game about uniting the world. After releasing on PC the game has gained some more recognition and respect among the gaming community. Now that the Director's Cut has arrived on PS5, console gamers can experience the game again with technical upgrades and a few more gameplay additions.

Death Stranding is a different kind of experience, modeled after games such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild rather than GTA or Assassin's Creed. It's more about traversing the environment than meeting a quest-giver every 5 meters or so and go all guns blazing. It also focuses on establishing connections with NPCs and human players alike. You receive emails from NPCs which trigger an emotion of worry, and you get social media-style "likes" from other real players roaming the game's world and using the structures you left behind. It's an asymmetrical online system inspired by the Souls/Bloodborne games.

The game's story is a mix of sci-fi, philisophy and human tragedy. The story itself is fine, full of typical Hideo Kojima twists and turns, but many people will be left scratching their heads. The game's overall atmosphere (a blend of tranquility, solitude and horror) is unique. The actors' performances are the best you can find in gaming, although it's clear they didn't have as much time to shoot their scenes as it's possible on movies. Hideo Kojima has created some fantastic characters with interesting backstories, but a few of them end up a disappointment (particularly Higgs, voiced by Troy Baker, and Fragile, voiced by Lea Seydoux). The world building though is almost flawless.

The main gameplay loop is about delivering cargo from point A to point B. But the trick is in traversing the environment. As you walk around, you have to balance the weight of the cargo you are carrying, and also use the tools at your disposal to cross a chasm, descend a big vertical drop, etc. Basically the environment is a puzzle you have to solve in order to proceed to the next mission - or rather, delivery.

Apart from environmental hazards there are threats coming from humans who want to rob you of your cargo, and from ghosts called BTs that can grab you and force you to fight otherworldly creatures in a shifting landscape. Unfortunately the boss fights of Death Stranding are few and far in between, and of low quality, just like Kojima's MGSV The Phantom Pain. They could have been something special, especially the Mads Mikkelsen sections, but the way they have been implemented is mediocre at best. Bosses are slow to respond, easy to avoid, just spam them with bullets and you are done with them (or you can just leave most of the boss fight areas and the fight stops). Only 2 encounters towards the end are what you'd call a true boss fight, but don't expect anything that matches Hideo Kojima's brilliant accomplishments in past MGS games.

The Director's Cut additions include some new equipment, a racing mode, a firing range (basically the VR Missions from old MGS games), new customization options, a few new OST tracks, and a few more story missions.

On the technical side, Death Stranding is a luxurious production. Graphics were some of the best found on PS4 and are still striking on the PS5. Now you got to choose from 4 graphical options, all of them targeting 60 fps (some of them better than others). There is a standard 16:9 mode and an ultrawide 21:9 mode with black bars and wider FOV, and each mode has Performance and Quality options. I think it's best to stick with the standard 16:9 Performance mode, don't engage the ultrawide mode unless you got a really big TV or monitor to compensate for the loss of screen area. This game has one of the most memorable OSTs in recent memory, and the 3D Audio tech enhances the acoustic experience. The Dualsense controller is also used wisely, with the adaptive triggers and the haptics increasing the immersion factor. You can import your PS4 save and continue on PS5 from where you left off, but it's a convoluted process.

Death Stranding is a unique experience. It's surreal that this game launched merely months before the Covid pandemic hit the world, lockdowns were put in place isolating people from one another, and dependence on delivery men grew more than ever. Playing the game in a post-Covid world feels completely different than before, because we can relate to the in-game world thanks to our own experience coping with the pandemic. Give this game a try if you are tired of modern AAA games recycling same old same concepts and ripping you off with loot boxes and microtransactions. If you just want to endlessly and mindlessly shoot and punch enemies, Death Stranding isn't for you.

But Sony doesn't care, they milk their fans for money, and they are even happy. And of course the release of the director's cut only on PS is, to put it mildly, piggish. Well, the comments of Sony fans that it is necessary to completely cancel the user rating completely speaks for itself. They're not playing a game, they're playing numbers on metacritic.

Kojima built a world with his unique own way. Creative story, epic music, stunning cutscenes.

It is abhorrent. The new area (building and top of a hill) is beautiful but really is something that was cut out in order to sell back to us later on. Wait for the price to fall. It isnt 2deep4u. It is a walking sim given a kojima makeover with added urination and poop jokes. This is the point where we must stop kissing Hideo's rear because his games are suffering. From the visionary who brought us the first 3 MGS games we are right in expecting more. Maybe its time he left video games to people who enjoy playing them and just go off to make movies.

For my original review see below:

First and foremost It is a walking sim. The presentation and actors are great and the world looks beautiful but there is very little actual gameplay fun to be had here. Hideos intentions are honourable verging on sickly but the point persists that video games must be fun and there is very little to be found in DS. This is exactly the kind of bloated movie with added game that konami canned him for. In no way is it acceptable to have to skip the same 4 cutscenes every time just to shower. I would urge players to note the amount of times they have thought 'just let me play the game'. And from past experience we know that games that do this lack gameplay - MGS4 for example. At this point Hideo should just go and make movies because the severe amount of bloated pointless garbage in this game renders gameplay an afterthought. It is charming: the cast are great and a few terrible lines aside its a fairly solid (sorry) story. But it is a lot less smart than it believes itself to be. It is everything questionable/bad about Hideos games and please note i am saying this as a fan of 20years and having completed DS and nearly Platinum'd it. It is blatant that Kojima has played and attempted to ripoff games like Journey and Firewatch. DS is a big budget faux-hollywood version of these games. Isolation is a theme throughout but upon beating the game it feels more like an excuse for foisting an empty world on us. I will never condone konamis practices but after experiencing DS i can understand why they kept tabs on the Kojimaisms in all the games hes released. This is not an MGS2-esque prophecy that will be relevant in a decade - it is a knee-jerk pander piece trying to cash in on modern political paranoia. What many will refuse to admit is that after making a series based on the Patriots system of control you spend DS building one yourself amid claims that it will 'bring da people togevur'. The formula for the gameplay we do get is 'Go from A to B dodging ghosts or humans - meet thank you hologram - rinse and repeat' and it is not good enough. I cannot tell you how many times my thumb ached from holding the same direction for minutes on end. A total lack of dynamism. It is honestly an amazon simulator and any majesty the world had evaporates when you can build roads through it. I have lost a lot of faith in my usual trusted reviewers because theyre calling this game a 9+/10 and that is nowhere near true.
Hideo is a genius and the world sorely needs his games. But this is barely a game. I think we have reached the point where he should just go and make movies because this game is an afterthought attached to one.

My fiancé for example loved watching me play this game but when he tried to play he found the traversal aspect difficult. The game mimics real-life balancing functions and you have to plan routes to make deliveries and overcome challenging and intimidating monsters made of Lovecraftian nightmares while trying to connect America after a mysterious apocalyptic disaster. The plot gets insane but it is slow-going in it's unveiling. The gratification is in the experience: connecting people both real and simulated, dealing with isolation and solitude, questioning your eyes, questioning yourself. It's an existential game and if you play games purely for action you won't be satisfied here. But if you like strategy games and challenges and looking for clues in the minutiae, and the idea of leaving behind footprints that may help others in their solitude, this is the game for you. It's brilliantly executed and gorgeously rendered. Visually cinematic, and that's not hyperbole. Many write it off as a "delivery game" but this is a misrepresentation because as gamers we are conditioned to be destination-focused. The premise of DS is not in the deliveries nor the destination but in the journey between. It's an atmospheric experience driven by the player with the end goal being the joy you find in helping others who are taking roads less traveled. And the monsters you encounter aren't always the obvious ones. This is my favorites Kojima game by far, 2nd only to MGS2, which elements of the latter can be found now in the directors cut with new stealth-based missions. Don't be afraid to try something new. Don't listen to haters. This game is not only abot fun, it's about helping each other. It's so nice to see, that your buildings helped so many people. If you're just going from A to B, you won't get pleasure from this game. But if you helping each other, make buildings, you'll get a great pleasure from this game. Expand

This game is definitely worth the $10 upgrade. it’s slow to pick up at first but once you put few hours in the story gets really good.

No Monster Energy in the director's version? Kojima betrayed us all. Sam can only drink Monster Energy - that's the basis of the game.

I honestly think the game deserves an 8, but I'm giving it a 10 just to upset all the trolls!

I had bought the ps4 version just recently and got the upgrade for very cheap. Super glad that Kojima thought of the gamers!!. The Haptic Feedback blew me away, it's so damn accurate and feels super good. The visuals are great. Had frame drop on couple of occasions for a second or two, other than that it's phenomenal.

This game is a masterpiece. If you haven't played it, don't rate it. It makes open world traversal the actual interesting part of the game, which is awesome. It's weird and probably not for everyone, but if you really play and it clicks, it's an amazing journey.

Loved the game even if people say its a courier game. The director cut helped the game make it more confortable and easy to finish.

Director's Cut is by far the best way to experience Kojima’s latest game. However, if you’ve already played Death Stranding and you’re considering buying the new edition just for the added content, better sleep on it. [12/2021, p.78]

Death Stranding: Director’s Cut is a solid remaster with smart upgrades that build upon the original release without taking away from what made it a unique experience. The game itself has a lot to say and some of it is genuinely compelling, however, the pacing is abhorrent and the core gameplay is a deadly pill made out of tedium and boredom, that I really wish I hadn’t swallowed. Let’s hope I’m a Repatriate.

Whether the 4k60 frames or the powerful features of DualSense, the experience of Death Stranding: Director's Cut has been taken to another level. With this Director's Cut, there will be some new feelings when going through the "journey of connection" again.
