Haven't played the original and kind of glad I didn't. This game felt like it was made for 2023. The controls are fluid and a lot less restricted as I've experienced in Callisto Protocol. The world feels griping and very immersive. The combat feels modern, fun, and very satisfying. I couldn't find one complaint about the game.

Looking at all the recent and upcoming horror game remakes and sequels, I was interested in but not particularly excited for the Dead Space remake. I was a fan of the first two games, but it had been some time since I’d played them… and in this horror game renaissance, the Dead Space remake has a lot of competition.

Now? I can’t think of a game that has made me want a sequel so badly, so fast after completing it. This remake makes a compelling case that Dead Space is not only worthwhile, but has an essential place in gaming right now. Why? Because Dead Space strikes a nearly perfect balance between action and horror, and demonstrates to me, like no other game has, that fun and fear do not always have to compete. Usually, they do—action games empower players, while survival horror games constrain them to create a feeling of vulnerability. But Dead Space manages to maintain real tension even as it gives you the tools to deftly take out small hordes of necromorphs. A lot of that has to do with the visuals and *superb* audio design and music—not to mention what Dead Space does best, immersion—but it’s also the franticness of combat as you juggle weapons and try to keep necromorphs at bay. Dead Space could benefit from being scarier in some ways—it’s certainly not the scariest horror game I’ve played—and I’d also like to see a sequel (a DS2 remake) expand further on the combat and find new ways to empower the player. The key here is that this remake makes me think both are actually, simultaneously possible. Story — the game’s narrative isn’t an all time great, but it is fully convincing. It feels seamless, and benefits a lot from the game’s commitment to immersion in all its aspects (from the in-universe UI to the single continuous camera shot approach). The writing is good, the voice work is great.

Combat — every single weapon is a blast and is useful in some way. This might be the most fun I’ve had with a flamethrower in a game (they often suck). The combat becomes bliss when you’re juggling multiple weapons, using their alt-fires, and mixing in telekineses and stasis. The dualsense features are very well implemented and add a lot to the feel of combat.

Graphics and audio — the game looks fantastic, with some minor caveats. It doesn’t reach the levels of fidelity that one might hope for in a current-gen-exclusive remake. The lighting is great overall, but transitions from light to shadowed areas can seem off at times. The audio design, however, is top tier. Play with good headphones and turn on 3D audio.

Performance — I experienced no serious issues. The game appeared to maintain solid 60 fps except in one single area, a large elevator that you return to a few times. As necromorph corpses started to pile up in that elevator, the framerate started taking serious hits.

One of the buggiest games I've played since Cyberpunk. Cannot get through the first part of the game without freezing and bugs that prevent you from continuing the game.

First 10 minutes of the game has several bugs that you can encounter. Even on the latest patch that require a full delete of your save data and reboot. Pause during the opening cutscene to take a call or delivery... but then come back to AI will T pose and you can't escape the opening. Even after patches this still exists.
If you reboot the game after dying from the first enemies, say you switch to another game or can't keep playing past the first few cutscenes. Rebooting the system will have you die while loading the game. YES while loading the game. You have a black screen showing the company logo, and the next thing you see after Dead space is your character dying. It loads your last save game when you boot but does not pause the AI! What??

AI can T pose later in the game too preventing you from moving on. It can be hours before it happens or even not at all, but remember to save! But don't save too often, if you fill up saves, you can't get New game plus after beating it?

Shop menus when exiting them can freeze. Requiring you to reboot the game. Do not press pause during the camera transition.

Enemies can spawn invisibly. Items required to progress the game may not spawn for you either. Not everyone has these issues, the game is bugged in a way that isn't completely reliable. So some people like me get it, everyone else doesn't and raves about the game.

You MUST on PS5 get the launch day patches. I think it's 2 patches in and the VRS quality makes the game look objectively bad - like they looked at it, knew something was wrong, and launched it anyway. I'm glad they fixed it launch weekend but why was it a thing to start . And their upscaling, I think their AMD upscaling makes the particle effects and dark scenes in a dark video game look terrible! It blurs all over the scene even with motion blur off, it's a "ghosting artifact". It can make people feel ill just by looking at it combined with the lighting in the game flicking tints of blue too. Quality mode is awful too since it butchers the frame rate to below 30 which makes this issue even more nauseous. That is not patched. so PS5 users should consider the PC version if this bothers or even makes you sick. Even the shop menus have little white dots appearing but they don't smear because it's stationary. The shops are in game so the upscaling hurts it

disappointed in this release so buggy for many people reporting the issues, they'll ignore them. not patching fast. Xbox Series X now has crashes for people post patch. I'm hearing stuttering on PC is terrible. not a single platform has the "best" version to play because they're all flawed? Go play Russian roulette with $80,

There is definitely some room for improvement on the technical side, such as fixing the customizable control layouts from resetting or objects and dead bodies ragdolling (which ironically makes the experience even more frightening). I also wish it featured something new like an enemy type or weapon at least. As it stands though, Dead Space remake is still a fun time and one of the better horror remakes to date. Isaac speaks now, power node upgrades no longer feel wasted, and the USG Ishimura got a major overhaul, complete with in-depth side missions and open-ended exploration and backtracking, and even a new alternative ending to come across in NG+. I was afraid that because the original Dead Space has actually aged well, this would just feel disappointing and unnecessary, but it takes that same award-winning formula and enhances them, from the visuals and the sound design to changes to the overall map of the ship. I'd bump it up to a 9 after said bug fixes. Expand

Expand

Isaac Clarke's original adventure is back in a new format, which has more depth in story and freedom in terms of gameplay. As a result, the game is recognizable, yet not the same which makes for a nice result. The game also has impressive graphics and the audio is unnervingly strong. That the game has some minor flaws we take for granted, because this horror adventure is recommended to everyone.
