Crimson Desert is almost impossible not to recommend in its past, present, or future state for anyone who has a fondness for open-world games. There are numerous ways myself or others could add or subtract to make it the most ideal personal RPG. But because Pearl Abyss has provided us with so many tools already, it’s hard not to appreciate and soak up the boundless freedom provided here. I’m absolutely curious what it will look like in the fall after months of tinkering have settled in. Maybe co-op will get added, maybe it will just be more pets. Either way, it’s hard to deny the resounding success Crimson Desert is right now.

Crimson Desert is one of the most rewarding experiences I've had in years, each moment of frustration giving way to excitement the next. It'll give you as much as you put in, even if that won't be for everyone.

Excellent in many aspects, with great atmosphere, fun combat, a constant sense of discovery and novelty on an absurd scale, Crimson Desert is one of the best open-world experiences of this generation. Some problems don't detract from the brilliance of a title that always rewards the time invested and makes the player want to play more whenever possible.

Crimson Desert is an incredibly ambitious project. If you are willing to commit, you will find appreciation in this deeply immersive medieval RPG that is almost stuffed with too many features, but somehow makes it all hang together in a beautiful and ambitious package.

Crimson Desert offers a stunning open world that allows players to get lost in rewarding exploration and engaging combat – so much, that you'll even overlook the thin narrative and cluttered controls.

An ambitious and content-rich open-world adventure, Crimson Desert stands out for its freedom, deep exploration, and dozens of hours of gameplay, but suffers from a weak narrative, underdeveloped characters, and inconsistencies in some mechanics and technical aspects.

Crimson Desert represents an impressive milestone in the open-world genre, offering a virtually endless array of things to explore, activities to undertake and enemies to face. However, it is not a perfect game: there are moments when the clarity of the mechanics and the user-friendly nature of a title of this scale seem to disappear. Many games promise too much and then disappoint. Crimson Desert is not one of them.

Crimson Desert makes you feel like a tiny insect in a vast, unknown, and beautiful world. It succeeds at this better than almost any other open-world game in recent years. After more than 50 hours, it can feel like you’ve only just dipped your toes in. The world is always hiding something new beyond the next hill. If you’re expecting a deep RPG or a tightly driven narrative journey, this game may not be for you.

Crimson Desert is an ambitious, visually stunning open-world RPG that blends brutal, skill-based combat with a richly detailed and immersive world. While its sprawling narrative can feel unfocused at times and boss difficulty occasionally borders, this game blows you away battle by battle.

Crimson Desert is an ambitious open-world epic that succeeds through its dense, rewarding exploration and weighted combat, even while stumbling over a generic story and a flat protagonist. While unintuitive controls and momentum-killing puzzles can cause occasional frustration, the sheer scale of Pywel and its deep progression systems offer a level of discovery unlike anything seen before it. Ultimately, the game’s narrative shortcomings are overshadowed by its immendepth and breathtaking world, making it a flawed but deeply memorable adventure.

As an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink sandbox, Crimson Desert is endlessly compelling, and frankly, irresistible. As a single-player RPG trying to tell a story, it falls flat on its face. Amazingly, it features one of the best and most immersive open worlds since Red Dead Redemption 2, but tries to give it purpose with a narrative that will have you scratching your head, or worse yet, scrolling on your phone.

Crimson Desert can feel messy and overstuffed, but it’s also a fascinating, visually impressive, sprawling, and often brilliant sandbox that rewards patience and curiosity in equal measure.

Crimson Desert lives up to its promise, delivering a rich open world with plenty of activities and fun combat. However, the title doesn't reach its peak because it lacks a particularly compelling protagonist and wastes the potential of other playable characters. Furthermore, the project still needs some polishing.

Crimson Desert is an ambitious project that showcases Pearl Abyss’s potential in the AAA space, but also reveals its limitations. Its spectacular visuals and some standout mechanics fail to make up for a weak narrative, unintuitive controls, and mission design inherited from the MMO. It’s not a failure, but neither is it the revolution it promised to be: it’s an important step forward, though still far from establishing itself as a benchmark for the genre.
