Crimson Desert is unique in the gaming landscape. A vast single player game that's shaped by its original vision to be an MMO, it's gigantic and packed full of interesting places, but its story is incredibly rough and delivered awkwardly at best. Combat is excellent, but the bosses are mostly awful. There is always a negative side to the game's positives, but I feel those positives outshine them anyway. I wouldn't recommend it to just anyone, but the right person will lose themselves in Crimson Desert.

The expectations were so high, but fundamentally, Crimson Desert is a beautifully boring mess. If there is no other intention than exploration and looking at the pretty rocks, this will satisfy in spades. However, for anybody easily frustrated by frankly ridiculous controls, busywork, and a main character giving less conversation than a mute Hylian, it is probably worth a miss.

Crimson Desert is an ambitious open-world epic that succeeds through its dense, rewarding exploration and weighted combat, even while stumbling over a generic story and a flat protagonist. While unintuitive controls and momentum-killing puzzles can cause occasional frustration, the sheer scale of Pywel and its deep progression systems offer a level of discovery unlike anything seen before it. Ultimately, the game’s narrative shortcomings are overshadowed by its immendepth and breathtaking world, making it a flawed but deeply memorable adventure.
