With all that said, Crash Team Rumble is fun and far more engaging than a game with this premise has any right to be. If you would have explained the basis of this game to me a year ago, I would have scoffed at the idea that this could be engaging and successful. But I’m genuinely surprised at how much fun there is to be had. There’s a real competitive edge to the gameplay that hooks me match after match. My only true complaint is that the game still feels like its lacking content. This mostly boils down to the game mode offering. The one and only game type is solid and fun, but it a little more diversity as far as game modes, events, or even slight adjustments to the current mode would go a long way. For instance, a mode totally focused on controlling relics and assaulting the other team might be a fun twist that shakes things up a bit. The game has great potential for future modes, iterations, and various content, however. While I have had a great time with Crash Team Rumble, only time will tell as to whether my engagement wanes playing the same game mode on repeat. For now, however, I’ll see you in the arena collecting that sweet Wumpa Fruit.

The concept and execution of the gameplay loop are solid, resulting in a fun multiplayer game based around Crash platforming mechanics, but I fear the game will very quickly be in a desperate need for additional content to sustain player interest. That starting price feels like too much, and this game will live or die on the size of its initial player base.

Very few game modes, but quite a few characters. The game does feel extremely unbalanced with several characters being able to stun you to the point you can't do anything in return or have no way to really combat them. There are multiple ways to get bonuses and fill it up faster, and several different classes for capturing, defending, etc. The game is a lot of fun for a roughly two hours and then you realize it's just the same thing again and again and quickly becomes less charming without content to back it up. Overall the biggest crash fans will love it, but everyone else? I recommend passing on. Expand

Fun to play but it lacks a lot of content, which makes it repetitive after a couple of hours.

There is plenty to love about this new Crash Bandicoot online mutliplayer experience, however there just isn't enough meat on the bones to justify the price tag for a game which has barely any content or engaging progression or rewards. Which is a big shame, because the core gameplay of the one gamemode available is fun and addictive, but the novelty can even wear off quite quickly, as the game is very repetitive. Not to mention the game development feels rushed and lazy, as majority of the assests are reused from Crash 4 and uses stock music instead of new original compositions, and alot of missing features such as statistics or leaderboards which youd come to expect from a multiplayer game. For the avid Crash fan this may satisfy, but for everyone else, I couldn't recommend this game, and would advise waiting until there is more content or waiting for a potential F2P launch. The game will need to pull a big turnaround if it wishes to be relevant in the long tun. Expand

A competitive version of Crash Bandicoot’s platform template is a great idea and realised with style, but it really is just the same activity on repeat, for now. [Issue#30, p.89]

Crash Team Rumble is an experiment with the Crash Bandicoot brand that went very well. No match is the same as the last, and there is a prevailing sense of fun. Not to mention, there are plenty of incentives to keep you playing. However, as a fully multiplayer title, only time will tell if it will last or be forgotten.

Crash Team Rumble feels a bigger-than-average swing for the series, but one that — at this point — ultimately misses. That said, there are updates on the horizon, but I’m worried that it won’t be able to break away from more unbalanced characters and a general lack of content. Maybe Crash Team Rumble will end up like Fall Guys or Rocket League and go free-to-play at some point, but as it stands I’d have to recommend waiting for the game to bulk up a little before diving in.
