Crash Team Rumble is a team-based, 4-v-4 online competition (requiring a subscription to your console's online service) in which you collect and score wumpa fruit in a platforming arena. It's a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, although the devs were very insistent that it was NOT a MOBA for some reason. That's not a point for or against the game, it's just very confusing to me lol

The chaotic nature of the game provides more fun than I expected going into it: your characters are organized into three classes (scorer, blocker, booster) with varied stats and abilities: the self-explanatory scorer can hold the most wumpa at a time; the self-explanatory blocker can deal more damage; and the booster, whose objective is to collect relics for use in activating special power-ups that can give your team an edge (such as an Uka Uka powerup which surrounds your character in a powerful shield for a period of time, making them especially deadly to opponents), can see double relics. There is also a secondary goal of activating gem pads to boost your team, which multiplies the wumpa you turn in by up to 2x.

The combat is fluid, the platforming is smart, and the varied teams keep you on your toes. So why is my score so negative?

To put it simply, this game is LIMITED. There is only one game mode - collect 2000 wumpa before your opponents. Even with the eight or so maps at launch, you're pretty much guaranteed to get bored of this game after two or three hours of play.

I could forgive that for most MOBAs; however, this game is monetized GREEDILY. This is a $30 game - $40 if you want the deluxe edition (or a physical copy, since the only physical editions are deluxe), which I'll get into in a moment. For a single online game mode with eight maps and eight characters, this game is at least $30.

It also has a battlepass system: yes, not only is it a paid game, it has paid seasons. Each season (or at least the first one) runs for 3 months, with 100 battlepass levels, all granting cosmetics such as music tracks and character skins; some of those skins are cute, but honestly, I don't feel motivated to grind for level 100 just for a new hat for femtropy.

Seasons guarantee one more thing: new characters and a new stage. Season 1 promises Ripper Roo and N. Gin, along with a swamp stage themed on the "Home Cookin'" level from crash 4. That's pretty small, and even worse: while season 1 started at game launch, none of these are out yet. Roo is promised for early July, N. Gin "later on", and the stage... no word on that.

It should be worth noting that season 1 is free on either version; season 2 you get for free in the deluxe edition, and since that's the only benefit, one can presume seasons will cost at least $10 going forward.

So if everything's like season 1, the base game is $30, and each season starting with 2 is $10+ for 100 grindable cosmetics, 2 new characters, and 1 new map. For a game this small, that's not gonna cut it for me.

There's so much more I could say (for example, why is there no new music? Why are the AI so bad? etc), but I have already rambled far enough.

To conclude: Crash Team Rumble provides a few hours of genuine thrills for its only game mode, but its small size and extremely greedy monetization tactics leave a horribly bitter taste in my mouth. I genuinely don't think this game will last past season 2 on its own merit, but in the meantime, I would strongly encourage consumers not to reward this shameful display of corporate greed, lest we see even worse of this in the future.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game has fun elements. Such as multiple characters and powers. What with varied gameplay and many unlockables to look forward to. And all the chaos is fun to endure. But that’s where the fun ends. Certain characters are wayyyy too overpowered and can deal way too much damage and send you flying across the map instantly with no time to react if not careful. On top of that, the game’s price is just a shameless cash grab, sorry *crash grab*. The battle passes are way too slow to fill up and on top of that, $44 for a game you need to pay extra on top of because the game immediately locks you out of it without an online membership for your console. That being said, this problem could easily be voided if the game either wasn’t a “Pay to Pay to Play” or had other multiplayer modes that could be usable with friends or even a single player campaign both of which shouldn’t require an online membership. All which this game lacks because Activision wanted extra $$$. The whole mandatory to be online to play and a membership is just absolute scumbaggery. It would make more sense if the game only required you to have an online membership to play around the world and be free to versus other people in your country. Considering that’s what other games can do. On top of that, the lack of things to do. Such as a lack of other modes, ranging from outside of online play. Such as a campaign, offline modes that can reward you for gameplay or even modes to have fun with your physical friends and not just randoms in a lobby. You’d get bored very very quickly. This game should’ve been at least free to play if this were the case if it wants extra $$$ from you. But no. Gotta get more outta you. Basically, for those unfortunate people who can’t afford memberships, you basically have a title screen that cost $44 and nothing else. Unless Toys for Bob can add this type of stuff that can appeal to the unlucky people who don’t have memberships to their respective consoles. I can safely say this is a miss. Expand

I'll keep it short, you're paying 35/40$ for a Crash Bandicoot game that when the devs decide to shut the servers down, the game will be completely useless. All the stuff you farmed countless of hours from the battlepass wil be GONE.

What the hell were they thinking? Why not just make a Crash 5? Nobody asked for this. Just do your job and make classic singleplayer JUMP N RUN's again... but after Microsofts purchase of Activision, all hope for this franchise is gonna be lost anyway...

There's no future of the currently dying brand of Crash Bandicoot post-CTR: Nitro-Fueled as long as TfB and unnecessary games like these are being made and sold.

The revival of Crash Bandicoot was great and put our favorite marsupial at high popularity levels, N. Sane Trilogy and CTR: Nitro Fueled were popular and likeable games. Crash 4 being controversial with its art style, ridiculous difficulty. Like, have the developers realized Crash has been associated as a kids game for a while, yet they make it difficult to the point people are sick of it, at least the original ND games were fun and not hard to achieve full progression with.

Now Crash 4, sold poorly, as proven by early UK sale statistics. Crash: On the Run tragically collapsed recently, a game that at least acknowledged the post-ND games rather than retconning them like TfB. Team Rumble only seems 'popular' if you are following the astroturfing campaign going on places like the bird app, of forced positivity. The casual audience has moved on, for the most part, as clear by the lack of discussion of this game, and many other Crash fans are not interested in a game that 1. should have been F2P like others of its genre 2. has little to do with what people wanted, especially with the delays of this game.

*About Team Rumble itself: one game-mode, very unbalanced gameplay meaning one team is winning easily, you got barely any new characters. Microtransactions, a LOT. Very low-effort seasons being promised. The gameplay is repetitive and is boring quickly. Looking at the technical aspects, this game is not impressive, doesn't push anything on the hardware. This is the closest to a C(r)ASHgrab we've had. So little to offer, the game's support will be pulled earlier than the superfans realize.

Beenox made faithful Crash designs, great varied gameplay. They understood Crash in general, how great Crash 4 would have been under them! And now they're just a Call of Duty studio, while TfB has been allowed to lead Crash into mediocrity, a place it's been in the past. Just get these developers back to CoD and let Beenox handle it. Same with Spyro, Beenox all the way! They were the ones that brought the fanbase together, TfB has torn it apart.

This game can be fun, it's nostalgic bright, brash and fast paced, however one of the fundamental is team cohesion, have a scorer, a blocker and a booster. The bots are useless and if you have a bot you lose. So much potential missed at launch. Feel like I've wasted £25 at this point. But I was gullible enough to buy Marvel's avengers and Hood .....so it may just be me.

Crash Team Rumble lacks characters, arenas, and modes. There is no single player in this game at launch which is ridiculous. Not even 10 characters to start, and it's the same one-game mode that you do over and over again. You also need Ps Plus or Gamepass to play this game when it's already a game you're paying $30 for, or $40 for a deluxe edition.

Not even Rockstar is that greedy to sell the singleplayer campaign and online multiplayer separately in a pathetic attempt to charge more than full price. So in reality this game costs $90 to get the full experience, meaning I expect top-notch AAA quality in this game. That is exactly what this game lacks. The graphics are a joke. The physics are beyond horrible. The gameplay is boring and repetitive. The AI is incredibly stupid. The maps are awful. Lack of content. This should've been free-to-play.

This game is online only. So once the developers decide to shut down the servers, this game will literally be unplayable. If you have the disc version, it will end up in the trash can. Charging $30-40 for a game with no offline modes is a cash grab. The greedy developers were too cheap and lazy to give me offline modes. Speaking of lazy, why don't we talk about about Crash's original developers. Naughty Dog recently had a Wellness Break, which only proves my point developers are getting lazier these days. I miss the PS360 trend when developers would give us a campaign with multiplayer for $60. Now they want to cut games in half and cry about crunch to get their stupid undeserved breaks. I don't recommend this poor excuse of a multiplayer game at all.

Crash Team Rumble is an experiment with the Crash Bandicoot brand that went very well. No match is the same as the last, and there is a prevailing sense of fun. Not to mention, there are plenty of incentives to keep you playing. However, as a fully multiplayer title, only time will tell if it will last or be forgotten.

Crash Team Rumble feels a bigger-than-average swing for the series, but one that — at this point — ultimately misses. That said, there are updates on the horizon, but I’m worried that it won’t be able to break away from more unbalanced characters and a general lack of content. Maybe Crash Team Rumble will end up like Fall Guys or Rocket League and go free-to-play at some point, but as it stands I’d have to recommend waiting for the game to bulk up a little before diving in.
