With all that said, Crash Team Rumble is fun and far more engaging than a game with this premise has any right to be. If you would have explained the basis of this game to me a year ago, I would have scoffed at the idea that this could be engaging and successful. But I’m genuinely surprised at how much fun there is to be had. There’s a real competitive edge to the gameplay that hooks me match after match. My only true complaint is that the game still feels like its lacking content. This mostly boils down to the game mode offering. The one and only game type is solid and fun, but it a little more diversity as far as game modes, events, or even slight adjustments to the current mode would go a long way. For instance, a mode totally focused on controlling relics and assaulting the other team might be a fun twist that shakes things up a bit. The game has great potential for future modes, iterations, and various content, however. While I have had a great time with Crash Team Rumble, only time will tell as to whether my engagement wanes playing the same game mode on repeat. For now, however, I’ll see you in the arena collecting that sweet Wumpa Fruit.

Crash Team Rumble is a team-based, 4-v-4 online competition (requiring a subscription to your console's online service) in which you collect and score wumpa fruit in a platforming arena. It's a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, although the devs were very insistent that it was NOT a MOBA for some reason. That's not a point for or against the game, it's just very confusing to me lol

It's a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, although the devs were very insistent that it was NOT a MOBA for some reason. That's not a point for or against the game, it's just very confusing to me lol

The chaotic nature of the game provides more fun than I expected going into it: your characters are organized into three classes (scorer, blocker, booster) with varied stats and abilities: the self-explanatory scorer can hold the most wumpa at a time; the self-explanatory blocker can deal more damage; and the booster, whose objective is to collect relics for use in activating special power-ups that can give your team an edge (such as an Uka Uka powerup which surrounds your character in a powerful shield for a period of time, making them especially deadly to opponents), can see double relics. There is also a secondary goal of activating gem pads to boost your team, which multiplies the wumpa you turn in by up to 2x.

The combat is fluid, the platforming is smart, and the varied teams keep you on your toes. So why is my score so negative?

To put it simply, this game is LIMITED. There is only one game mode - collect 2000 wumpa before your opponents. Even with the eight or so maps at launch, you're pretty much guaranteed to get bored of this game after two or three hours of play.

I could forgive that for most MOBAs; however, this game is monetized GREEDILY. This is a $30 game - $40 if you want the deluxe edition (or a physical copy, since the only physical editions are deluxe), which I'll get into in a moment. For a single online game mode with eight maps and eight characters, this game is at least $30.

It also has a battlepass system: yes, not only is it a paid game, it has paid seasons. Each season (or at least the first one) runs for 3 months, with 100 battlepass levels, all granting cosmetics such as music tracks and character skins; some of those skins are cute, but honestly, I don't feel motivated to grind for level 100 just for a new hat for femtropy.

Seasons guarantee one more thing: new characters and a new stage. Season 1 promises Ripper Roo and N. Gin, along with a swamp stage themed on the "Home Cookin'" level from crash 4. That's pretty small, and even worse: while season 1 started at game launch, none of these are out yet. Roo is promised for early July, N. Gin "later on", and the stage... no word on that.

It should be worth noting that season 1 is free on either version; season 2 you get for free in the deluxe edition, and since that's the only benefit, one can presume seasons will cost at least $10 going forward.

So if everything's like season 1, the base game is $30, and each season starting with 2 is $10+ for 100 grindable cosmetics, 2 new characters, and 1 new map. For a game this small, that's not gonna cut it for me.

There's so much more I could say (for example, why is there no new music? Why are the AI so bad? etc), but I have already rambled far enough.

To conclude: Crash Team Rumble provides a few hours of genuine thrills for its only game mode, but its small size and extremely greedy monetization tactics leave a horribly bitter taste in my mouth. I genuinely don't think this game will last past season 2 on its own merit, but in the meantime, I would strongly encourage consumers not to reward this shameful display of corporate greed, lest we see even worse of this in the future.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game has fun elements. Such as multiple characters and powers. What with varied gameplay and many unlockables to look forward to. And all the chaos is fun to endure. But that’s where the fun ends. Certain characters are wayyyy too overpowered and can deal way too much damage and send you flying across the map instantly with no time to react if not careful. On top of that, the game’s price is just a shameless cash grab, sorry *crash grab*. The battle passes are way too slow to fill up and on top of that, $44 for a game you need to pay extra on top of because the game immediately locks you out of it without an online membership for your console. That being said, this problem could easily be voided if the game either wasn’t a “Pay to Pay to Play” or had other multiplayer modes that could be usable with friends or even a single player campaign both of which shouldn’t require an online membership. All which this game lacks because Activision wanted extra $$$. The whole mandatory to be online to play and a membership is just absolute scumbaggery. It would make more sense if the game only required you to have an online membership to play around the world and be free to versus other people in your country. Considering that’s what other games can do. On top of that, the lack of things to do. Such as a lack of other modes, ranging from outside of online play. Such as a campaign, offline modes that can reward you for gameplay or even modes to have fun with your physical friends and not just randoms in a lobby. You’d get bored very very quickly. This game should’ve been at least free to play if this were the case if it wants extra $$$ from you. But no. Gotta get more outta you. Basically, for those unfortunate people who can’t afford memberships, you basically have a title screen that cost $44 and nothing else. Unless Toys for Bob can add this type of stuff that can appeal to the unlucky people who don’t have memberships to their respective consoles. I can safely say this is a miss. Expand

What the hell were they thinking? Why not just make a Crash 5? Nobody asked for this. Just do your job and make classic singleplayer JUMP N RUN's again... but after Microsofts purchase of Activision, all hope for this franchise is gonna be lost anyway...

There's no future of the currently dying brand of Crash Bandicoot post-CTR: Nitro-Fueled as long as TfB and unnecessary games like these are being made and sold.

The revival of Crash Bandicoot was great and put our favorite marsupial at high popularity levels, N. Sane Trilogy and CTR: Nitro Fueled were popular and likeable games. Crash 4 being controversial with its art style, ridiculous difficulty. Like, have the developers realized Crash has been associated as a kids game for a while, yet they make it difficult to the point people are sick of it, at least the original ND games were fun and not hard to achieve full progression with.

Now Crash 4, sold poorly, as proven by early UK sale statistics. Crash: On the Run tragically collapsed recently, a game that at least acknowledged the post-ND games rather than retconning them like TfB. Team Rumble only seems 'popular' if you are following the astroturfing campaign going on places like the bird app, of forced positivity. The casual audience has moved on, for the most part, as clear by the lack of discussion of this game, and many other Crash fans are not interested in a game that 1. should have been F2P like others of its genre 2. has little to do with what people wanted, especially with the delays of this game.

*About Team Rumble itself: one game-mode, very unbalanced gameplay meaning one team is winning easily, you got barely any new characters. Microtransactions, a LOT. Very low-effort seasons being promised. The gameplay is repetitive and is boring quickly. Looking at the technical aspects, this game is not impressive, doesn't push anything on the hardware. This is the closest to a C(r)ASHgrab we've had. So little to offer, the game's support will be pulled earlier than the superfans realize.

Beenox made faithful Crash designs, great varied gameplay. They understood Crash in general, how great Crash 4 would have been under them! And now they're just a Call of Duty studio, while TfB has been allowed to lead Crash into mediocrity, a place it's been in the past. Just get these developers back to CoD and let Beenox handle it. Same with Spyro, Beenox all the way! They were the ones that brought the fanbase together, TfB has torn it apart.

The game, while only having one core mode for now, is still kept fresh with the wide selection of maps and the 8 unique heroes in the base game (with 2 more coming with Ripper Roo and N.Gin in Season 1). One of the maps, Surreal Summit, is based on my favourite Crash 4 level, Off-Balance. So no surprise that I adore this map in particular. Even with a rubberbandy online, you are still able to play and successfully play your role without much issues. That is a step-up from Nitro-Fueled's neglected Online. While the game has a Battlepass, it still paves way for good cosmetics both on the free and premium sides. Solid base roster. Solid game. Solid all around. It may not be the next Fortnite, Apex, COD, Overwatch, or Fall Guys, but it has a really solid foundation as a Multiplayer Crash game that'll just get better with time hopefully.

My only negatives is that I wish that private matches also rewarded XP for leveling up heroes and the battlepass, as relying on matchmaking only is a bit lacking and tedious in that aspect. Maybe halfing the rewards for that might be what balances it out. For me, in order for it to be a 9 or 10, it needs about 3-4 more maps, and 4-6 new heroes for it to REALLY be worthwhile. And game modes. More modes are important for this kind of game. Introduce permanent new modes that are fun and spicy, and you have yourself a game that people can re-review basically and give it an 8, 9 or 10 even. Well-made game. Just needs a bit more to be chewed fully. Not saying it's unfinished or unbaked like other live service games that have far less content, but there is something special here with the brand new foundation for Crash Bandicoot Multiplayer. It doesn't need to be Bash remake. It just needs to be fun, unique, enticing, and passionate. That's how I can explain what the developer, TFB, are.

I know it looks simple from the surface, but the game is far more interesting than just collecting fruits. There are also the relics, which are used to activate certain relics stations around the map that spice up the gameplay, and each map has its unique stations with all sorts of abilities and power ups. I haven’t even talked about the gem pads, which when successfully activated will grant a bonus amount of Wumpas each time you deposit some at your team’s bank for a certain amount of time. This makes capturing gem pads chaotic and thrilling because everyone wants that juicy bonus. Last thing is that if you don’t like collecting, then you can always fight and stop the red team from depositing Wumpas, or defend your own bank from blockers of the red team. All these elements together create split second decisions, like: Do you focus on collecting? Or securing gem pads? Or getting rid of the blocker who’s on your team’s bank? Or blocking the red team at their bank because they’re so close to winning? And much more. The matches are fast paced, and they can can range from 2 minutes and upwards to 8 minutes. This makes every match feels different enough, and it also makes it accessible to someone like me who isn’t skilled enough at online games especially ones where you have to play for +15 minutes such as battle royale games. Crash Team Rumble lacks characters, arenas, and modes. There is no single player in this game at launch which is ridiculous. Not even 10 characters to start, and it's the same one-game mode that you do over and over again. For that you get 8 mostly completely different characters with unique skill sets that fall under 3 roles Scorer, Blocker and Booster. And even though these roles excel at their respective jobs, they can and should be used as all rounders if needed.

This makes Crash Team Rumble to one of the best multiplayer games when it comes to moment to moment gameplay and spontaneous strategy that I have ever played. If not even the best. And it makes every match intense and vastly different.

The balancing and many ways for a losing team to recover thanks to different gem platforms, that gives your team an advantage, makes this also one of the most fair multiplayer games I have played.

The fun and varied customization options, the multiple but still easy to understand progression and the diverse and greatly designed maps also contribute a lot to the replayability and fun of this game.

But as with every game, Rumble isn't perfect. The AI players that fill in for leavers or when a team isn't full at the beginning of a game, are mostly worthless. Especially when a enemy team knows how to focus them. And the live service model makes this game at launch a little bare bones, when it comes to content. A few more playable characters and at least one different standard mode would have been greatly appreciated.

But when I experience the base game we got at launch, I am quite confident, that the content, that we already know will be added to the game in the following months (hopefully even years) will be absolutely worth the wait.
Until then I will sink even more hours into the game we already have. Which will not be hard, because it is already such a fantastic experience.

It's a simple, but fun experience delivered in small bites between matches. While on a surface level it may seen too simplistic the gameplay itself it's addicting, and hooks you up constantly wanting more and more.
My only complaints as of now it's some of the built into characters challenges being far too unrealistic (like blocking 300 wumpas / scoring without being hit once a total of 7 times) and the lack of repeat characters / roles restrictions (fighting against 3 blockers while someone else it's backdooring scoring it's quite painful).
For the people divided about it - give it a try! Seriously. The game it's only half the price of a standard release (29.99) and it's definitely gonna have some serious support similar to Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled (given how they already announced a roadmap showing new characters, maps and game modes).
For the people review bombing this game without even giving it a try yourself, solely based off pure childhood nostalgia about Crash Bash or against the new Art Style of crash Bandicoot, i have 2 things to say:
    1) Grow up. The vast majority of y'all are adults who first experienced Crash Bandicoot in the nineties going mental on socials over something that it's either not your cup of tea or solely because it isn't a copy paste of your past nostalgic memories (like remasters / remakes) .
    2) Crash Bash wasn't, and isn't nowhere near as good as your child self remembers. Seriously, try to play it now in 2023, try to fully complete the game (200%) by yourself and come back here to tell me how you feel about it.
Huge congratulations to the developer team! You can feel and tell they love and care about Crash Bandicoot and really put their time and effort into it, from Crash Bandicoot players to Crash Bandicoot players. This game reeks potential, and i am all here for the ride.

The concept and execution of the gameplay loop are solid, resulting in a fun multiplayer game based around Crash platforming mechanics, but I fear the game will very quickly be in a desperate need for additional content to sustain player interest. That starting price feels like too much, and this game will live or die on the size of its initial player base.

The 30$ price tag might be weird, but in my opinion you are getting your money's worth of enjoyment, and you can always catch this one on sale if the price still doesn't appeal to you.

Not even Rockstar is that greedy to sell the singleplayer campaign and online multiplayer separately in a pathetic attempt to charge more than full price. So in reality this game costs $90 to get the full experience, meaning I expect top-notch AAA quality in this game. That is exactly what this game lacks. The graphics are a joke. The physics are beyond horrible. The gameplay is boring and repetitive. The AI is incredibly stupid. The maps are awful. Lack of content. This should've been free-to-play.

This game is online only. So once the developers decide to shut down the servers, this game will literally be unplayable. If you have the disc version, it will end up in the trash can. Charging $30-40 for a game with no offline modes is a cash grab. The greedy developers were too cheap and lazy to give me offline modes. Speaking of lazy, why don't we talk about about Crash's original developers. Naughty Dog recently had a Wellness Break, which only proves my point developers are getting lazier these days. I miss the PS360 trend when developers would give us a campaign with multiplayer for $60. Now they want to cut games in half and cry about crunch to get their stupid undeserved breaks. I don't recommend this poor excuse of a multiplayer game at all.

The game is not perfect though, not a lot of content at launch, and lack of a story mode and other modes make the game drop 1 score. Also, the game is expensive for what it is, and the marketing is not convencing a lot of people. Maybe, that's the reason the game has mixed feelings for a lot of people that didn't play the game yet. I know it's a live service game, but I think they should've released more content at launch.

But these problems can be solved easily by updating the game, with new seasons and etc...

This is the only way to win games. I loved how TFB gave more moves to the not only main characters, especially for Ripper Roo, Dingodile, Catbat, Tawna, etc. The gameplay is equal to that of Crash 4 if not improved.

    How does the gameplay work?
You have to collect 2000 Wumpa fruits and bring them to your base. Said like that, it sounds trivial... But in game it is much more fun. You not only have to take care of your Wumpa, but also focus for opponents and power-ups that are scattered around the map. Each map changes features, including hazards, size and height, and they are well detailed. There are three roles, currently, in the game: Scorer, Blocker and Booster. Each character has its own role and you have to make the best use of it, Crash Team Rumble does not only pay you back through victories! The problem with this title is that it has little content, and contains only one mode to play with... Repetitive yes, but a lot of fun! It is still too early to give it an actual rating currently, but what I am writing is my experience in front of this title. If we want this game to last long, we need to be the first ones to support it instead of criticizing it without even knowing it well.

In any case, keep up the good work TFB!

Not to mention the game development feels rushed and lazy, as majority of the assests are reused from Crash 4 and uses stock music instead of new original compositions, and alot of missing features such as statistics or leaderboards which youd come to expect from a multiplayer game. For the avid Crash fan this may satisfy, but for everyone else, I couldn't recommend this game, and would advise waiting until there is more content or waiting for a potential F2P launch.

Crash Team Rumble is an experiment with the Crash Bandicoot brand that went very well. No match is the same as the last, and there is a prevailing sense of fun. Not to mention, there are plenty of incentives to keep you playing. However, as a fully multiplayer title, only time will tell if it will last or be forgotten.

Crash Team Rumble feels a bigger-than-average swing for the series, but one that — at this point — ultimately misses. That said, there are updates on the horizon, but I’m worried that it won’t be able to break away from more unbalanced characters and a general lack of content. Maybe Crash Team Rumble will end up like Fall Guys or Rocket League and go free-to-play at some point, but as it stands I’d have to recommend waiting for the game to bulk up a little before diving in.
