    Biomutant on the PS5 is a greatly enhanced experience that, whilst unable to fix some of the more fundamental issues baked into its core, is a much better-realized version of the developers’ vision. Running on significantly more powerful hardware than that on which it was originally released, Biomutant’s exploration and combat shine brighter than ever. If you were put off by the technical limitations that held Biomutant back, this version is very easy to recommend, and even easier to sink hours upon hours into.

    Biomutant remains a slow burner. It took a while to get its hooks into us, but it sure did. It's not startlingly original and is a bit overburdened by its sheer scope, but we don't feel shortchanged by our forty plus hours playing it. Start a new save on PS5 if you want to get a clean sweep of trophies though.

    Certainly representing the definitive version of the flawed but ultimately enjoyable Biomutant on PlayStation consoles, Biomutant's PS5 debut largely erases the performance issues and instability that plagued the PS4 version of the game, delivering a handsomely made open-world adventure that can be enjoyed by gamers of all ages.

    Even a year later, Biomutant still left us impressed in just about every area. From the adventure to the world and its history to the characters and quirks, Biomutant remains a compelling title. That said, the PS5 iteration doesn't feel that ambitious. The positives, such as an increase in fur and its interactions with the world, come with divisive negatives, like level of detail pop and controller features. It's still a good title for those who haven't played it before, but if you've already finished the game, you'll be thankful that you don't need to pay more for a marginally improved experience.

    Biomutant is the biggest and longest AA game I have ever played. I appreciate the density and scope of this game. The game has an ambitious amount of characters, enemies, abilities, and locations for a budget title. Maybe Biomutant should have had less.

    Biomutant sparkles as an open world, RPG-lite action adventure game. If this were on Dreamcast, we might have a game of the year winner. Combat is simple enough and yet filled with options. The Biomutant can use “wung fu”, dual wield swords, shoot lightning like Emperor Palpatine, or rain down bullets. Traversal is also full of opportunity. Biomutant can ride furry horses and happy sharks, use gliders and helicopter backpacks, and mount a giant mechanical hand with a howitzer hidden in its finger. The world itself is a toxic ruin left by misguided humans who burned it all. In a refreshing change for the crowded post-apocalyptic genre, the ruins of earth are colorful and fun.

    And now we go dark. The game does not look good. I explained the premise of the game to my youngest child and the response was, “So it’s Horizon Zero Dawn that doesn’t look good.” The graphical issues are that simple. Some AA games look amazing, but that is all a matter of scope. Biomutant is a sprawling epic filled with destinations and puzzles. This is the problem. Bandit camps are the same cut and paste bases. Toxic areas are also cut and past. By the time I was half way through the game, I felt like I had finished a NewGame+. This was all reminiscent of the Ubisoft style open world games. Ubisoft has enough trouble with this Ubisoft style open world games. Other games do not need to adopt Ubisoft’s exhausting open world.

    The “less is more” mantra should have been adopted in all facets of this game. Most enemy encounters are the same combination of one big guy and a few little guys. Most gear that is picked up is redundant crap that fills up your inventory and is exhausting to dismantle. Vendors are all the same. Whole towns are the same. Quests have the Biomutant cross crossing the map in obvious padding. AA games do not need padding. Some of us like shorter games!

    Full disclosure: I downloaded Biomutant through PS+. Any long time PS+ subscriber is drowning in a backlog of quality games. My playthrough of Biomutant was exhaustive at over 30 hours and I was ready to tackle that next game. At another time, a game like Biomutant would have held a special place in people’s hearts. Now it’s just another title in an ever expanding library that you will never play.
