I just can't with this game... I love AC and enjoyed the newer titles in Odyssey and Origins, but this game is just to freaking long. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Played every assassin's Creed game love the original assassin's creeds. Also I like the RPG ones assassin's Creed Valhalla was good. I just wish they were focused on more about the assassins instead of Vikings. And I wish they kind of calmed down on the fantasy a little bit. But overall the combat I love hope they keep the brutal combat. And future assassin's Creed games also keep the stealth. An want the developers to never forget what made assassin's Creed games unique. I like the Valhalla. But it seem like it struggled what it wanted to be I hope you read this Ubisoft. I like the RPG ones and the OG assassin greed games. I just hope you stick to what it means to be an assassin. And keep the assassin's Creed games unique. I don't really like the fantasy stuff that much it kind of ruins it I like you Ubisoft to make an RPG assassin's Creed game that focus on assassin's and Templars. Please stick to what make assassin's Creed special I played all of them I like the originals and the RPGs ones just don't mess this franchise up. Expand

The story, however, is incredibly long and stretched way further than it needs to be. Several arcs feel incredibly repititive in story structure and poor pacing affects different storylines in the game. The actual characters are not super interesting despite some solid voice acting. The best being Eivor who still feels a bit bland but still badass. but the side characters fall flat more often than are actually interesting. The game also feels very shallow the further you get into it with side quests that get less and less interesting over the course of the game.

This game is good. Though.. It is worse than Odyssey in all and i mean all aspects. I compare it with Odyssey cause they are the latest assa games. Stealth i think its the worst in all assassin games. I don't know why but i think this took 2 steps back. On the other hand it's a big, rich game, with multiple things to do, plenty of side stories etc. Its a 6/10 game while odyssey was easily a 9. Thats why it's way behind origins and odyssey in all player's lists as i saw on the net too. Expand

Running around and killing stuff is probably the only thing that is good about this game. And the ending. The story is weak, the story is all about finding your brother and conquering provinces and rallying people to your cause, fighting your enemy. The game loop is reminiscent of AC1. Enter a new zone, kill stuff, kill more stuff, kill leader, rinse and repeat.

It's kinda hard to write a mixed review on a game that you played for 130+ hours.
Probably it's the biggest time spent by me on single player game. For a single run, for sure.
And yet, if I had to describe AC Valhalla in one word, it would be - "mediocre". Even the best of the missions can be called quite good at most, the rest are rather average or completely boring and repetitive.

And yet, if I had to describe AC Valhalla in one word, it would be - "mediocre".

Even the best of the missions can be called quite good at most, the rest are rather average or completely boring and repetitive.
Unfortunately, there wasn't a single moment in the game that could be called awesome or masterpiece.

Even the final twist wasn't a twist at all, since we were spoiled a lot in Eivor/Odin memories and just waited when it happens in main quest already.

However, here we will have one ending, and then another, and then another and another. It’s hard to even say how many "final quests" the developers have included in this game. Probably it suits to the size of the game itself.

In addition, even for "Ragnarok" we have a fantasy version scene and the same scene in a sci-fi futuristic style, close to the first games in the series.
So we spend all those dozens of hours traveling through 9 worlds, with all their magic, creatures, potions, spells, Scandinavian lore and close to 0 scientific explanations of all what's happening. The game says that this, although not completely accurate, but still the memories of Odin.
But then the game shows Aesir is much closer to Isu in terms of technology, costumes, culture etc.
For me, this is sincerely incomprehensible.

Yeah, yeah. Perhaps this is explained in more detail in comics, books, etc.
But if you not able to properly connect the fantasy and scientific parts of the story in 100+ hours of gameplay, where did you even get the idea that I'd have any interest to know about it from your cross-selling products?

The trend began with the Odyssey I suppose, where Isu stopped looks like people of the future with flying cars, skyscrapers, urban cities, etc. and rather turned into ancient gods with shiny sword, shields, spears and so on. The same thing happened with Valhalla.
By the way, with such a scale of the game, writers could tell at least a little whether all the Isu were a single people or they also had some kind of "nationality" with their differences in culture, technology and mentality.

England is a separate disappointment. Despite the scale of the map, all locations feel very same. Yes, some places are greener, others are greyer, some are more foggy, others are more snowy.
But overall, you feel like you're traveling around several of the same places in circles, but spending a huge amount of time moving from one to another that looks quite like the previous one.

In addition, fast travel implementation in the AC maybe the worst comparing to any other open world game.
If in most games, after icon discovery, you can travel to fires, camps, cities, often even to mini-quests and all sorts of similar icons, there are just towers, the opening of which is itself tedious.
It feels like the game wants you to spend even more time on it, even despite the insanely huge amount that it already requires to complete it.

However, I continued to play the game until I finished it, why?

I think the best comparison I can make is the experience of playing some kind of MMORPG or any other multiplayer game when you just spend some evening nights on something basic and familiar while waiting for the release of a new cool AAA game like God of War or Spider-Man.

Funny, but AC Valhalla it's some kind of single player analogue of multiplayer gaming for people who don't like multiplayer that much. Just a time killer.

It's the best part of the Assassin's Creed series so far. I played them all so I am able to judge here. I've beaten Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla in 3 months. It's an almost perfect action RPG game - good story, plenty of quite interesting OPTIONAL side activities, the best combat system in the Assassin's Creed series etc.

Drawbacks are quite standard for Ubisoft: the game is too long. I've beaten the main story with plenty of sides in about 60 hours and about 20 hours more are needed for DLC and about 10-20 hours I guess for finishing with Order and other side quests. 100h is too much. People mostly like changes in their lives :) 100h in a single game is toooo damn much. Sony makes ideal-length games: Last of Us 2, GoW 2 and Horizon 2 are about 20-30 hours. It's the best length - not short not long.

But even though I can't assess the game less than 10 of 10 because the amount of work done is terrifying. I played the game in 2023 so missed almost all bugs - good for me, LOL.

The story is fantastic, yes the game is long, yes it has loads of content, but also yes all of the side quests are some of the best in the series, especially from the two games prior. I hated it the first time i played, then put out 180 hrs the second time. Honestly just adjust the damage values and you will enjoy it.

    Homosexuality?

This game has been amazing the detail, story line and graphics. It lacks in NPC behavior but one aspect that bothers me considerably is the amount of in game moments where they insert homosexuality. Once maybe twice okay but countless times they put you in situations where homosexuality would be a norm obviously they're not going for any kind of historical accuracy. They insert homosexuality situations where they would not fit or absolutely makes no sense here is a brief description on Vikings view and beliefs in regards to homosexuality

Homosexuality was not regarded by the Viking peoples as being evil, perverted, innately against the laws of nature or any of the other baggage about the concept that Christian belief has provided Western culture. Rather, it was felt that a man who subjected himself to another in sexual affairs would do the same in other areas, being a follower rather than a leader, and allowing others to do his thinking or fighting for him. Thus, homosexual sex was not what was condemned, but rather the failure to stand for one's self and make one's own decisions, to fight one's own fights, which went directly against the Nordic ethic of self-reliance. (Sørenson 20). Being used homosexually by another man was equated with cowardice because of the custom of sexual aggression against vanquished foes. This practice is documented in Sturlunga saga, most notably in Guðmundar saga dýra where Guðmundr takes captive a man and his wife, and plans for both the woman and the man to be raped as a means of sexual humiliation (Ok var þat við orð at leggja Þórunni í rekkju hjá einhverjum gárungi, en gera þat vi Björn prest, at þat þaelig;tti eigi minni svívirðing.) (Sørenson 82, 111; Sturlunga saga, I, 201). In addition to rape, defeated enemies were frequently castrated, again testified to in several places by Sturlunga saga. Grágás records that a klámhogg or "shame-stroke" on the buttocks was, along with castration, a "major wound" (hin meiri sár), ranked with wounds that penetrated the brain, abdomen, or marrow: the klámhogg was thus equated with castration as "unmanning" the victim, and classed with wounds that cause major penetrations of the body, strongly suggesting that the term refers to rape or forced anal sex such as was inflicted on a defeated combatant (Sørenson 68). It is not known how widespread the practice of raping defeated foes actually was, or if it existed before the advent of Christianity, but in other cultures which have had as strong an ethic of masculine aggression as existed among the Vikings, the rape of defeated foemen was obligatory. The attitude that homosexual usage of an enemy was a means of humiliation in turn would have weighed heavily against men in homosexual relationships: if it was a shameful humiliation of an enemy, performing intercourse with a beloved friend would have been regarded as a the worst sort of betrayal or lack of loyalty (Sørenson 28). Since all the references in literature and especially insults indicate that to be sansorðinn, ragr, níðingr or to be accused of ergi is to be a man who is the passive recipient of anal sex, we do not know if the Vikings regarded oral sex between men unfavorably or not (or, in fact, how they regarded oral sex in general, no matter who, male or female, was doing it, or to whom, male or female, it was being done). It is interesting to note that the Vikings considered that old age caused a man to become argr. A well-known proverb stated svá ergisk hverr sem eldisk, "everyone gets argr as he gets older." This possibly could point to an increasing acceptance of homosexuality after a man had raised a family and grew older (Sørenson 20), although a man such as the chieftain Snorri goði who fathered 22 children, the last at the age of 77 (just before he died), certainly proves that a man never was really too old to father children! (Jochens 81). For a man who could not have children (whether due to impotence, sterility, age, etc.) homosexual relations may have been acceptable. One slang term for such a man seems to have been kottrinn inn blauði, or "soft cat" as reported in Stúfs þaacute;ttr, an epilogue to Laxdæla saga, in a conversation between the Norwegian king Haraldr harðráði and Stúfr, the son of Þórðr kottr (Þórðr the Cat): puzzled by the unusual nickname, Haraldr asks Stúfr whether his father Þórðr was kottrinn inn hvati eða inn blauði, "the hard or the soft cat." Stúfr declines to answer despite the implied insult, but the king admits that his question was foolish because "the person who is soft (blauðr) could not be a father" (Jochens 76).

I enjoyed playing this game. It has a lot of fun mechanics/mode. But the story starts with a bang, then whimpers out midway through (after Suthsexe). The second half story feels a bit like grinding through zones with not much of an overarching story. I would also have liked to see more stealth-focused missions -- like the earlier AC games.

Garbage. I'm convinced half these reviews are bots. They drop you into this game with little backstory or what you're trying to accomplish. The controls are spotty and the combat system is broken. Trying to emulate Dark Souls combat while simultaneously destroying what built your franchise (stealth) is not a good look. Couldn't get more than 10 hours into this travesty.

AC Valhalla is an unfinished, buggier-than-usual title of a fantastic game series which I have enjoyed all the way from the very first game. Gameplay-wise Valhalla feels like a stripped-down version of the previous games, Origins & Odyssey: boat battles are gone, the combat and even overall movement around the game's world feels very clunky, and the graphics are surprisingly lackluster (even though the world's design itself looks gorgeous). A certain big boss fight in the Wrath of the Druids expansion, which is still bugged to the point of the player not being able to finish it to this day in the Year of Our Lord 2022, inspired this review, and just when I was starting to enjoy Valhalla a bit more after the initial shock – progress-hindering bugs not being fixed after more than a year is simply unacceptable.

The game also feels "emptier" than the previous titles, sure there are still tons to do around the large world of AC Valhalla, but it all lacks a sense of accomplishment, for instance half of the chests you collect contain the same two or three resources that you have an abundance of before you even hit mid-game, and so you're left wondering why even bother. The story for the most part is a decent one and the characters are not super memorable, but I have to give special credit to the game's side missions or "mysteries", which are almost consistently noticeably more fun and creative than the main story itself. Overall the game seems to repeat the same old viking cliches the Vikings series already covered extensively, which makes Valhalla seem like a bit of an obvious, cheap copycat.

All in all, if the game were technically finished, if it were better written, and if the gameplay mechanics were a step forward rather than back, AC Valhalla could have had the potential to be one of the best titles in the series, as vikings seem to always be in fashion. As it stands, though, we have gameplay that you couldn't call smooth even if you really wanted to, and we have stone stacking to boot. If that doesn't give you completionists out there gray hairs, I don't know what will.

like it's... fine? i forgot about the story about 3 hours into it and just used it to fight enemies and loot cool gear. much in the vein of Fallout 4, the story is so lacking and the open world so vast (and i should say empty of any real driving force) that it's easy to lose yourself in fetch quests.

It's the best out of the "RPG trilogy" by far. The graphics of this game are breathtaking, the world (not the open world) they have built is interesting and beautiful. The combat system is a mixed bag for me, the story is pretty bad, and the pacing is very bad. The open world isn't as bad as odyssey and origins but it's not good either. Also there is a general feeling of bugginess to the game.

I ended up taking quite a bit of fall damage until I had figured out what worked for me and what did not. I played through at my own pace, in about a year, starting on Stadia and finishing on PS5. The breath of side quests kept me engaged, and I paced the storyline because I didn't want to hurry too much. In terms of value/money, this game heads my personal charts. I particularly loved the ending - the integration of the future storyline with the past is much more meaningful and mysterious than in prior games, and the ending hits hard both philosophically and on an emotional level, while simultaneously raising a few hair-raising questions about the entire Isu universe and the future of the franchise. Bloated, boring and endless, when will Ubisoft learn that bigger is not better? It’s baffling they made a much better entry with Odyssey on so many levels then made the decision to cut systems that actually worked well like factions and naval combat.

Ubisoft already did Valhalla but better in Odyssey. If you really want to to play these new iterations of AC games that are now action RPGs, don’t waste your time with Valhalla. Even if you make it through the whole game which you probably won’t due to its bloat and monotonous and tedious game design, you’re rewarded with a one and a half hour cutscene that wraps up the plot (which I have to point out has nothing to do with what you spend most of the game doing).

I’m normally a very generous gamer, I try to see the game for its intentions first and execution second, in Valhalla I realized at about the halfway point their intention was: let’s make a game that’s bigger than Odyssey but with Vikings. Then they stripped good mechanics away for no reason I can deduce, then they managed to churn out a mind numbingly boring story with what might be one of the laziest and insulting payoffs for the player I’ve ever experienced. Don’t even get me started on the side quests.

To top all of this off, my biggest critique and ultimately what turned this game from passable to downright failure for me, was the length of the game. The amount of filler and bloat injected into this game is almost insulting. Like yes, we’re in the age of peak capitalism and yes we’re all consumers that want to, well… consume. But Valhalla turns media content consumption into a giant pile of flavorless slop, poured into a trough for us to mind numbingly eat like livestock.

I felt almost disrespected playing this game. Is this really what you see gamers as Ubisoft? Too stupid to figure out where to go so we’re inundated with a record number of map markers, and too lazy for a challenge so even at harder difficulty and with more challenging level scaling, so everything is way to easy and once again, something becoming a common theme in my play through: boring.

I don’t know how Ubisoft managed to make the Viking conquest of England set in the AC universe boring, but once again Ubisoft never fails to move the bar in the wrong direction and surprise us in all the wrong ways.

Very slow starting and just slow pacing overall. I really liked Odyssey for a good while thanks to the story but started getting bored with that one further in. This starts out as a snoozefest and then just keeps getting worse. The bugs are plentiful and you'd think years later these would be fixed but no.

The story is so nothing. I didn't feel invested at all and it isn't engaging. It was very generic and written like a bunch of Americans read a couple of grade school books about vikings and watched too many Marvel movies. The phrases they use and the way they talk sound more like they pray to the Marvel Odin than the Norse Odin. You have all these one off interactions with people like you're supposed to know them and have a rapport but why do I the player care? I just met them and they're supposed to matter? This is just bad storytelling.

Okay graphics, it's a step back. On PS5 you'd expect more but the snow effects are bad and it looks like I'm a rolling pin through a mountain of cake icing, the rigging and character models look outdated, the Odin object indication lacks definition and there are no settings to fix it. I hear things ping but even gold items barely show up on my OLED screen. The bird mechanic is half useless most of the time until you upgrade their functions.

Gameplay is pretty awful. Parry just doesn't work right. The button layout is bad but customizing it is like a 20 minute task as you can't just remap a button you have to remap every function and they all seem to collide. I've gotten stuck in a few spots, enemies see me in hiding at times, view distance for enemy archers is insane far and their accuracy is ridiculous. Staggering enemies seems broken and a lot of the battles you just dodge a lot. A lot of missions require you head on fight and with how broken fighting is I feel like I'm playing a bad GoW war clone.

The sailing is so bad. It's unrealistic but also clunky. I like the auto sail mechanics but sailing seems like an afterthought where they just shoved in black flag mechanics on a tiny boat.

Navigating and interactions are probably the worst part. Climbing is essential to AC and when it's bad it breaks the game. Want to climb a roof? Well scramble around until you see a prompt come up that says you can climb here then do it because if you guess you're always wrong and you just come out of hiding and get spotted. Go into a window? Better make sure you're at the right angle in the right spot or you just stand there. Climb down a cliff? Crouch then hold crouch otherwise you just stand there. Half the time you're better off just jumping and taking the damage.

Using a horse is also important. Too bad most of the time when you call it the horse rushes right past you and keeps running. You never even get the chance to get on it like the horse is mocking you. If you're not near enough to a road auto nav doesn't work either you just get a message that says "cannot auto navigate".

Oh and I saved the worst for last. The sound mixing and music. For the most part either the music in this game doesn't exist or it's mixed terribly. At the very beginning of the game you're at a party with a guy playing music yet you hear no music, just people. Why? The audio either sounds muffled or distorted and I have a nice home theater. The worst is the horrid tin high pitched triangle sound that marks the start of world music and lasts far too long while also being way too high frequency. If you have tinnitus it will trigger it. Then any time you open menus you might get the title song and it goes on for a while. You hear that song when you sync, when you do certain things, at certain mission points, way way too much and what should be a beautiful title theme is an annoying everything theme. In other games it was a minor song that lasted as long as the interaction but this is very loud, very abrupt, the loudest thing in the game by far, and it plays for a few minutes after the event stopped.

It also sounds like a lot of the audio samples were done in a sound booth or bathroom. Real world sounds you expect in most games just aren't there.

This was obviously a rushed game, it's one of their worst. I didn't even get half way I hated playing it.

There's a lot of content overall, but it feels like an absolute slog most of the time. The characters are mid, the combat is below average, and severely lacks depth despite the game's seemingly "deep" skill tree, the stealth is hit or miss - mostly miss - and not fun at all, and the big moments don't do much for me at all. Side missions have become an important part of the AC games, as they take up a large portion of the game if you're into stuff like that. The side missions in Valhalla are some of the weakest in the series yet. The game itself is also very buggy, and it came out nearly two years ago. This game was massively disappointing and it doesn't feel complete despite all the 'content' the game has in it. Expand

    +++ Really beautiful graphics
    ++ Really beautiful combat system
+ Gameplay fun, but a little bit repetitive over time --- Cultural content makes no sense : Normans were not Hashishins nor had any muslim-like culture, in fact historically they became even the more engaged of crusader factions. This game's story is a mix of lies and a worsened version of woke culture... The entire game

This game's story is a mix of lies and a worsened version of woke culture... The entire game should probably have been detached from Assassin's Creed saga.

Very good and solid game (it is more of a 7.5 than a simple 7), but please change completely story-writing and themes.

I had a great time playing this game, but there are far to many missions in the main story that could be cut out in order to make the game a good overall experience. The combat system was very fun, but I found myself fatigued by the large amount of mainline missions that added very little to the game.

Audio on PS5 version has been recorded with equipment from 80’s. That is so poor quality no matter do you have good hometheather or premium headset. Also, game is half assed on every category. Voice acting is in english, but actors try to fake norwegian accent. Makes me want to puke

To long, story does not exist, ending is bad, many plot holes. But still enjoyable, nice world, it makes fun to play and the viking feeling exists. Nevertheless, many aspects must be better for the game to be really good.

    Game completed with platinum trophy.
One of the better AC games. The story is interesting, not very suspenseful.
The best thing about the game is without a doubt the setting. The world graphics are stunning. Gameplay does not offend, does not impress. There is a plethora of items on offer. Whether weapons, armor, shields and so on. Honestly, you'll probably finish the game anyway,

I would have appreciated a more varied variety of enemies. Because after a few hours of play, the combat system gets very repetitive and boring.

"Boring" is a word that describes this game perfectly, if you're a madman and you're trying to complete the game 100% like me. While the game does offer side activities at every turn, the side quests try to carry on the "Witcher" theme, but they don't really succeed.

By the way, the guy who created the fishing achievement, where you have to catch at least one fish of each kind, surely has a place reserved in helheim.

In conclusion, I rate it 8/10.

It's not greatest game of all time, it's not best AC either, but it's not a bad game. Far from it. I'm not sure what were some people expecting, but some of these 0/10 reviews make no sense to me. It's at least 7/10 game, even if you are not a fan, it's still at least 7/10 game. This is possibly LAST real AC game, so i'm not sure why anyone would even complain about it. Either play it and enjoy the last part in this series or then don't play it. It is what it is. But what it is- big beautiful open world, good graphics, very good voice acting (from male main character, female was meh), historical locations and so on. So yea i don't get the whining, because Ubisoft wont make anything better anyway anymore. This is the last one. Next one (if it ever comes out) will be possibly some live service nonsense, basically mobile game. Expand

First of all the bugs, in the opening scene a pig was hanging mid air for nothing. I don’t expect bugs starting the game.
Secondly I cringe seeing the climbing/parkour mechanics. The climbing in previous games was realistic, being able to climb mountains without anchor points annoys the gamer in me. Unity parkour was unrefined but great. They could have made a serious development on it.
In addition the combat gameplay, is not bad but they could’ve taken a serious hint from Sekiro or Ghost of Tsushima in their approach, button mashing is obsolete. Finally the A.I, instead of increasing the counts of npc, they could have seriously focused on their lay out in respective sets and give them core strenghts so the player have an element of fast thinking.

In conclusion it looks like an unrefined gem. I will not be returning to the series soon, but I hope Ubisoft will read what we share and think. And maybe try to make and even more immersive game. Looking at how the industry is evolving game have become an experience, here I felt like I was just playing a game no different that what I feel in excitement while playing tetris.

Bad graphics, bad sound quality, very repetative and to long. Very easy to get OP so it’s hard to enjoy this game, maybe the first hours is good then it’s meh for 40-50 more hours

Todella laaja maailma, pitkälle kehitettävä hahmo ja tarvikkeet, paljon tehtäviä. Tarina vähän hukkuu tehtävien määrän alle. Hitaasti etenevä peli, sopii hyvin ihmisille joilla on paljon aikaa. Maailma on yksityiskohtainen, mutta saisi olla hieman henkäsalpaavampiakin paikkoja, sillä pelissä on paljon saman tyylisiä vuoria ja laaksoja pitkälti koko ympäristö.

The game became repetitive real quick. The map is overwehlming. The world is stunning, as usual, but i found myself bored in like 10 hours in game. If you're tired of all the viking/norse mythology we're getting and not an absolute fan of the AC franchise, it might not be your smartest move to buy this game.

There are two competing experiences here: that as as Assassin, and that as a Viking, that either on its own feels like it might have been a triumph and better than this good but not great Assass-king hybrid we have.

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla effortlessly plants its banner as the best open world RPG available for the new consoles. This Viking epic flexes its gore-soaked, tattooed muscles when it comes to world-building, and medieval England wows with its enchanting untamed vistas. It’s also portioned out at a steady pace and, if not for the repetitive, limited combat, Valhalla could have ranked even higher among our favourite games in the series.

Is Assassin’s Creed Valhalla the best entry in the series yet? Some would be tempted to say so. While the map size might overwhelm some players, it remains an easy game to mainline with the right navigation mode turned on. In fact, the quick load times help to make this an even easier task than in previous generations. This is an iteration of Assassin’s Creed that has a bit of everything from the previous games, as refined as we have seen to date.
