The story I thought was great and had a nice ending: The Eivor and Sigurd saga, traveling to Asgard and Jotunheim was fun, some of the province arcs were great and unique from the others (for the most part). Its biggest downfall is by far is its length, it took me 70 hrs to finish this game. Most people that play an rpg game for that long are simply there to 100% the game, not still trying to finish the main story line. I enjoyed the game at the start and for the first 40 hrs or so, but there seemed to simply be no end in sight at that point and everything started feeling tiring and monotonous. Besides that main problem, this game was teetering on the border of being too glitchy for my liking. Some very annoying bugs appeared here and there, sometimes had to completely reload. For the most part it worked alright, but was a bit of a nuisance at critical moments. The real world story still makes no sense to me (ever since Desmond died in AC III) and feels completely needless on top of the historical saga. The combat I found to be alright, nothing too different than Odyssey or Origins, not the biggest fan of this dark souls combat system either, was too finicky and annoying at times like would often catch on fire or miss the timing of the parries. Overall, this game was a mixed bag for me, it had good elements but was just too freeken long. Expand

It is a huge improvement from the past AC game.

I have to update my review, the game overstayed its welcome, beware that it is a never ending game. I actually quit out of boredom (after 80 hours of gameplay and realizing that I wasn´t even close to getting to the end of the story), games need to have a conclusion and this one seems to not understand that. It is like a 1000 page book, that you enjoy for the first 500, slug through the next 300 because you actually want to read the conclusion, but you finally quit because it becomes tedious and repetitive, and you want to eventually read other books in your collection...

This game is a significant downgrade from Origins. The gaming mechanics are pure trash. Advertised as a "PS5 Upgrade" the graphics and atmosphere are not even comparable to Black Flag. Another cut and paste game from a series that is getting worse, not better.

this is a big step backwards from Oddessy and Origins. The stealth has even less of a emphasis now and its never really explained to you again that you should be stealth through the cities you find. they assume you have played the last two.
even on the harder difficulty i never had a need to use stealth at all for any part of the game, so the game becomes extremely shallow very quickly.

like it's... fine? i forgot about the story about 3 hours into it and just used it to fight enemies and loot cool gear. much in the vein of Fallout 4, the story is so lacking and the open world so vast (and i should say empty of any real driving force) that it's easy to lose yourself in fetch quests.

I had a great time playing this game, but there are far to many missions in the main story that could be cut out in order to make the game a good overall experience. The combat system was very fun, but I found myself fatigued by the large amount of mainline missions that added very little to the game.

Beautiful game graphically but honestly that's it. Incredibly long story, around 60 hours of game play and it gets boring after 30. I think it could have been better if the whole game had been set in Norway, because the sections of the game set there were FAR more interesting. I also hated the male/female Eivor choice. It was so obviously just their way of giving butthurt male players an option to play as a male, instead of Ubisoft just giving us a sole female protagonist for once.
In Odyssey, it made sense; whoever you didn't pick still featured in the game as the antagonist, and it works very very well. Male Eivor had no place in this game, considering female Eivor was the canon, and the male one is stuffed into this Valhalla story that has NO place in the game. No hate to the voice actor of course! Just a cowardly choice by Ubisoft.

The story is interesting, but poorly executed. And I do really enjoy the new gear upgrading system, as well as the new talent tree (which is really the only thing that motivated me to keep playing). Those are really the only good things I can say about the game. I understand the development team was forced to work around the pandemic, but I'd have gladly waited however long it takes to fully polish this game.

My enjoyment of this title was consistently hamstrung by moments of stunning sloppiness. Didn't RDR2 already show us how to do snowy environments? Honestly—and very disappointingly—playing Assassin's Creed: Odyssey on my PS4 looks miles better than Valhalla on my PS5. I sincerely hope Ubisoft can patch in some graphical improvements ASAP, but it's so much more than that. The animations are unnatural, the combat is often unresponsive, and the company's refusal to fully commit to a female protagonist is perennially disappointing.

It still scratches the AC itch, but I know from playing past games that it could have been so much better. Maybe I *will* just go back to Odyssey...

The characters are mid, the combat is below average, and severely lacks depth despite the game's seemingly "deep" skill tree, the stealth is hit or miss - mostly miss - and not fun at all, and the big moments don't do much for me at all. Side missions have become an important part of the AC games, as they take up a large portion of the game if you're into stuff like that. The side missions in Valhalla are some of the weakest in the series yet. The game itself is also very buggy, and it came out nearly two years ago. This game was massively disappointing and it doesn't feel complete despite all the 'content' the game has in it. Expand

    İyiGame Good Things

    Story (No spoilers)
The story of the game lasts for a minimum of 60 maximum 90 hours according to the gameplay. This is good news for those who pre-order the game like me or buy it shortly after the release, but it contains a handicap that can be liked in general, but it progresses very disconnected from each other, unfortunately. The 20-minute episode in the final of the game did not satisfy me, but this does not show that it is bad, I can say that it is an Assasin's Creed game with a good final.

    Play
Even though it feels very strange after experiencing 100+ hours of power fantasy and origins in Assasin's Creed Odyssey, the gameplay of the game depends on the person's ability to parry and attack at the right time is a concept that I always like and generally the finisher animations repeat themselves after 70 hours of playing. I can also say that it is satisfactory, the feeling of the hit is still weak, but it is stronger than origins and odyssey in general, I can say that I did not experience a certain error problem or animation glitch while playing, so it has a nice gameplay but unfortunately it cannot handle a 70-hour game.
    Graphics
I finished the game on PlayStation 4 and I can say that the water appearance and effects were better compared to the first 2 games of the series, but of course since it is a brand that releases a game every year or 2 years, I did not see a difference, of course, this is my ps4. It may also be due to my playing so I do not go too long here.
    Game's Map
England and Norway are beautifully reflected, but I think it is too colorful for a country that has constant rainfall and sees the sun once a month, or I look at it in detail.

The lack of traditional side quests leaves the game filled with boring "world events" that have no plot to them whatsoever. The change to the loot and upgrade system makes it way too easy to max out your weapons early on and removes any reason to loot anything throughout the game.

I don't appreciate being offered gay sex every other scene when I clearly made choices in game to play as a straight guy. If you want to make a gay game, do that, and make it clear that's your agenda. It's creepy to sneak it into games you know kids and straights play. Maybe give an option, if people don't pick your preferred gender bender ideology, live with it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 80 HEURES!!!!

Took 128 hours to do everything in the base game. Combat and atmosphere seems to be inspired by God of War(2018). Medieval England is my favorite setting since Rome in AC: Brotherhood. Beautiful game with a grimy realism. You can almost smell the smoke-filled homes and unwashed bodies. Darkest and most lurid game in the history of Assassin's Creed. For the first time I can recall there are some real moral choices you have to make that aren't easy, and the game can sometimes become philosophical.

On the downside the game is very buggy, and even 9 months after release serious bugs exist that can prevent you from fully completing the game. Often my character would turn around completely when aiming with the bow, or get warped to the edge of the game map. Sometimes got stuck in walls. For the entire 2nd expansion my horse refused to run(very annoying). AC: Valhalla was also too wordy. There were far too many cutscenes and too much dialogue with people endlessly yapping about nothing. It's turning into a JRPG with all the bloviating.

The absolute worst part of the game though is all the terrible puzzles. it seems like every other treasure chest requires you to solve a little puzzle. Some of these require keys, hidden underground entrances, magic entryways, or my favorite, a game of find the hidden explosive urn. A lot of treasure is hidden behind walls that can only be destroyed using explosives, and there will be 1 explosive urn hidden somewhere relatively closeby, but can still take 20 minutes to find. It's very obnoxious and I recommend just using Youtube videos, because there was no gameplay value in wandering around until you stumbled upon the hidden answer. There are also these stacking cairn puzzles where you have to play Jenga with rocks. It too is frustrating and a terrible waste of time in terms of gameplay.

Unfortunately, I can't say the same with AC Valhalla. My experience with AC Valhalla was filled with more cons than pros. The story for example was blandly filled with repetitive quests with a clunky combat system. It took me about 50 hours to finish the story and it just felt unsatisfying at the end. I am biased I guess. I love scripted engaging storytelling and the RPG element like dialogue and decision choices of the previous AC and now AC Valhalla isn't a real AC experience for me. The last straw for me is apparent under the development of this game. The facial animation felt outdated, all AC protagonist movements are the same (i.e., running) and I can't tell what type of emotion the characters of this game are trying to portray. This is not a spoiler since it was shown in the trailer, but the character Randvi looks just like Kassandra from AC Odyssey. I love the changes to AC Origins and it is my favorite AC of all time, but not to the extent of what AC Valhalla and Odyssey. Now it just feels like they are just slapping the name Assassins Creed to a game with a few AC elements. Expand

Overall good game for first 25 hours. Ends up too repetitive and you start to see the flaws within the game. Combat is very flashy but feels clunky af to use. It was designed in a way that makes it look good, sacrificing feeling good. You’ll know what I mean after you’ve played it for 10 or so hours.

Viking atmosphere works pretty well, from Norse mythology to architecture and customs.
Skill tree can be overwhelming but it makes sense in time. Interesting feature is variety of weapon combinations you can wield (although I played shield and axe all the time).
All in all, AC Valhalla is game that can provide hours of fun but instead of making the best of what's missing in AC world history and storyline, it is wasting its potential focusing too much on graphics pushing all other aspects to background.
Final thing that needs to be mentioned is number of annoying bugs that will follow you everywhere and appear in worst time.

    GOOD PARTS:
Loot: I really disliked the loot system in Origins and Odyssey. It was just to much of everything. But now you have just a few items but you can upgrade them a lot which will save a lot of time switching armor everytime you find something new.

Story: I REALLY like the story. Almost every character is interesting and have a lot of personality. The story is kinda simple but still entertaining.

Graphics and sounds: The world looks amazing on my midrange PC (ryzen 3600, RTX 2060) and the sounddesign is just wonderful.

Sidequests: I like that most of them are short.

    BAD PARTS:
Fighting: I mean its cool that you can rip somebodys head of but it becomes boring and just steals time after the 10th time. And it happens a lot in a fight. More annoying then the finisher is the timing for dodging. Don't get me wrong sometimes you know exactly when to dodge or block but othertimes they show you the indicator and only attack you after 5 seconds.

Stealth: It's sadly really bad. The thing that made AC so wunderful and special is almost gone. It's unnecessary and just time consuming. You get nothing out of it. No boosts, no money. And sometimes Avoir ist just doing weird things and jumps out of the bush when you want to get him in the bush. I think the only implement it to call the game a AC game.

Climbing: Awful. If you want to climb up a mountain it's ok but if you want to do some parkour it's terrible. He just drops down or jumps to the other side of the wall and I have to admit it made me very angry a lot of times.

Bugs: Just a lot of different bugs. Can't say so much because it's just really bad programmed.

    CONCLUSION:

I love the idea of the game and I love the writing. But the gameplay lost it track a long time ago. And it's just so badly programmed. I mean you should think of somebody like Ubisoft a bit more. It's not just a random Indie studio it's **** Ubisoft, a bilion company.

No. But you can see that there was a lot of effort and love put in to the game as they tried to take the franchise in a more depth-filled direction. With a few years to perfect the engine and really flesh-out what style of game they want to create, Assassin's Creed could soon be a foundational cornerstone of AAA titles. While not terrible, Valhalla is a huge letdown after Odyssey. The controls are extremely clunky, and climbing/jumping around is a huge pain now. It’s also very buggy, I’ve found myself getting stuck many times. Characters often don’t look at each other when they’re speaking, audio cuts in and out, and the facial expressions/body language can be flat out embarrassing. This game doesn’t look or feel like it belongs in 2020 or on the PS5, but unfortunately that can be par for the course for Ubisoft sometimes.

The storytelling is also a huge letdown. Most of the main quest arcs are separated into standalone stories, none of which are particularly compelling, but instead are predictable and redundant. This format also fails to allow you to develop any particular attachment to the characters. As such, you don’t really care what they’re saying or what happens to them. It’s also the third consecutive game with almost no connection to the Assassin’s brotherhood, something that was forgivable with the previous titles, but now just completely lacking. Also it’s supposed to be set around the late 800s, so ostensibly the brotherhood should be getting pretty established by this point. That entire part of the lore made these games unique and exciting, instead this now just feels like a fairly week and rushed game about vikings. Finally, it seems as though stealth is on the way out too.

I could say a lot more, but simply put, this is a generic and uninspired game.

Secondly I cringe seeing the climbing/parkour mechanics. The climbing in previous games was realistic, being able to climb mountains without anchor points annoys the gamer in me. Unity parkour was unrefined but great. They could have made a serious development on it.
In addition the combat gameplay, is not bad but they could’ve taken a serious hint from Sekiro or Ghost of Tsushima in their approach, button mashing is obsolete. Finally the A.I, instead of increasing the counts of npc, they could have seriously focused on their lay out in respective sets and give them core strenghts so the player have an element of fast thinking.

In conclusion it looks like an unrefined gem. I will not be returning to the series soon, but I hope Ubisoft will read what we share and think. And maybe try to make and even more immersive game. One of my all time favorite RPGs is FF XIII so I am not averse to longer games. However, this was just absurdly long. And while it seems weird to complain about length, it just wasn't interesting in those hours. The combat seems fairly similar to the past two entries, the story is very dry and bland, and the characters as a whole aren't very interesting.

It doesn't help that I felt like Eivor (Main Character) was a bystander in this game. I felt like everything was happening around him/her but not that he was really doing anything all that interesting.

On top of all this, the amount of random crap you would have to pick up or do to 100% this game is just stupid and tedious. There are things like a section in Jotunheim that I literally looked at a guide and it was still going to take forever to just get things to work/appear.

I ended up, 54 hours in, quitting the game. I had made it to the last few quests and just didnt have the power level to complete the game. I could have turned the difficulty down but it was just a grind by this point and I was not going to go and grind to get more levels.

Overall it is a 5/10 for me. It is a gorgeous game, but the story, length, quests, and overall feel just arent good.

+ Less loot. The items you have becomes more important and you can focus on other stuffs.

+ the raids was cool at start. Becomes a bit the same after a while.

    - A bit flat when it comes to story and characters.
    - Sure in the end you will notice the copy paste quests but now as bad as it was in odyssey.

I have very few pleasant words for Assassin's Creed Valhalla. I simply disliked the game.

There are many reasons why I think this game is mediocre, but I'll start with what I liked about it.

    First, the story.
Eivor's tale was what kept me going through the game. If it wasn't for this story filled with good characters, well-written dialogues, action-packed moments, twists and turns, I would've abandoned this game. The ending is pretty lackluster and the credits doesn't even roll, but the journey told here was incredible.
One other thing that impressed me was the combat. At first, I found it very stiff and basic, but as the game progresses it gets better, more visceral and entertaining. Also, the boss battles make up for some really fun fights.
Other than those two key points that made me stay withstand this game for 80 hours, I also want to give praise to the STUNNING graphics, the very unique and quite original sidequests that made me laugh or got me invested and the soundtrack, which isn't anything special, but did a good job nonetheless.

As for Valhalla's missteps, well... It's everything else!
What bothered me the most in this game was the sheer amount of bugs. Game-breaking bugs, quest-hindering bugs, immersion-shattering bug... you name it. I had to restart the game several times due to some gruesome experiences. It was not good.
The fact that the game is bloated as hell also does not help at all. The maps are beautiful, sure (especially Asgard), but it's unnecessarily big, filled with unrewarding treasure hunting and some annoying mini-games like stacking up rocks on top of each other. Most of the puzzles revolved around getting inside a house locked by a hidden key or blocked from the inside and that got old VERY QUICK! Also, the "Find and Speak" quests made little sense to me. If everything else points me in a direction in this game, why would you waste my time with petty chasing??
There were many other reasons why I had a hard time having fun here, like the aforementioned tasteless ending to a fantastic story, the movement being EXTREMELY unyielding, tiresome level grinding, repetitive environments, useless abilities and etc.

Valhalla isn't bad, it's just overly unexceptional. Few and far between were my moments of fun.
I do not recommend this game at all. Maybe if you're a fan of the series, since the story and its combat are the only two things that matters here.

No idea how this gets rated so high. For example, Valhalla is NO WHERE near the quality of Ghost of Tsushima. Janky animations. Poor and super outdated combat. And my god the writing can be so awful.

Think this has to be my last AC game. Ubisoft just makes cookie cutter games now in this series with nothing exceptional while asking the player to commit so much time, it's just not worth it.

It's kinda hard to write a mixed review on a game that you played for 130+ hours.
Probably it's the biggest time spent by me on single player game. For a single run, for sure.
And yet, if I had to describe AC Valhalla in one word, it would be - "mediocre". Even the best of the missions can be called quite good at most, the rest are rather average or completely boring and repetitive.

And yet, if I had to describe AC Valhalla in one word, it would be - "mediocre".

Even the best of the missions can be called quite good at most, the rest are rather average or completely boring and repetitive.
Unfortunately, there wasn't a single moment in the game that could be called awesome or masterpiece.

Even the final twist wasn't a twist at all, since we were spoiled a lot in Eivor/Odin memories and just waited when it happens in main quest already.

However, here we will have one ending, and then another, and then another and another. It’s hard to even say how many "final quests" the developers have included in this game. Probably it suits to the size of the game itself.

In addition, even for "Ragnarok" we have a fantasy version scene and the same scene in a sci-fi futuristic style, close to the first games in the series.
So we spend all those dozens of hours traveling through 9 worlds, with all their magic, creatures, potions, spells, Scandinavian lore and close to 0 scientific explanations of all what's happening. The game says that this, although not completely accurate, but still the memories of Odin.
But then the game shows Aesir is much closer to Isu in terms of technology, costumes, culture etc.
For me, this is sincerely incomprehensible.

Yeah, yeah. Perhaps this is explained in more detail in comics, books, etc.
But if you not able to properly connect the fantasy and scientific parts of the story in 100+ hours of gameplay, where did you even get the idea that I'd have any interest to know about it from your cross-selling products?

The trend began with the Odyssey I suppose, where Isu stopped looks like people of the future with flying cars, skyscrapers, urban cities, etc. and rather turned into ancient gods with shiny sword, shields, spears and so on. The same thing happened with Valhalla.
By the way, with such a scale of the game, writers could tell at least a little whether all the Isu were a single people or they also had some kind of "nationality" with their differences in culture, technology and mentality.

England is a separate disappointment. Despite the scale of the map, all locations feel very same. Yes, some places are greener, others are greyer, some are more foggy, others are more snowy.
But overall, you feel like you're traveling around several of the same places in circles, but spending a huge amount of time moving from one to another that looks quite like the previous one.

In addition, fast travel implementation in the AC maybe the worst comparing to any other open world game.
If in most games, after icon discovery, you can travel to fires, camps, cities, often even to mini-quests and all sorts of similar icons, there are just towers, the opening of which is itself tedious.
It feels like the game wants you to spend even more time on it, even despite the insanely huge amount that it already requires to complete it.

However, I continued to play the game until I finished it, why?

I think the best comparison I can make is the experience of playing some kind of MMORPG or any other multiplayer game when you just spend some evening nights on something basic and familiar while waiting for the release of a new cool AAA game like God of War or Spider-Man.

Funny, but AC Valhalla it's some kind of single player analogue of multiplayer gaming for people who don't like multiplayer that much. Just a time killer.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've never played an Assassins Creed game before, but I opted for this game, since I am a huge fan of Norse mythology and for the most, Vikings. So when I bought this game, I had my expectations. 20-30 minutes into the game, most of them had been crushed.

First of all, playing for more than 5 minutes made me realize that the sound engine in this game is utter trash. For all games I've played, this has to be the worst sound quality and mixing I've ever heard. And no, I didn't have 3D audio on, and my headset is also pretty expensive. The sound quality often just sounded low-res and kind of "away" in a bucket or something. Very frustrating, but didn't stop me from getting the platinum trophy.

Second. I know about the animus and how the series are build up, ish. But for some reason, I bought this hoping and also thinking that no Animus would appear. But of course, it was, and to be honest, it was just not interesting for me. Not from the beginning, during the story and the end of the story. Nothing seemed like it made sense and it just wasn't interesting.

Third, the story in a whole is way too long and most of it seemed unnecessary. You have to make alliances with all these regions, which is cool, but they decided to put in 12 or something. Plus 4 "extra worlds/maps". Long story short, this game is simply needlessly too long and makes it along the way boring. Nevertheless.

Now that it's off my chest, I can focus on what makes it better. Yes, this is a very good Viking game. You have a hometown, where you can kind of build your own town, and from these go be the best Viking. There's raids you can ravage, and exploring you can do. There are so many elements of this game that's actually fun and interesting, but is held back a lot by the whole "Assassins Creed". For me at least.

Again, long story short. This a pretty damn good Viking game, if Viking actually was in focus. But it simply wasn't for me. And that saddens me. It gets a 7/10, since the Viking part of this game is solid. Otherwise, it would lay around 5/10.

Gameplay-wise Valhalla feels like a stripped-down version of the previous games, Origins & Odyssey: boat battles are gone, the combat and even overall movement around the game's world feels very clunky, and the graphics are surprisingly lackluster (even though the world's design itself looks gorgeous). A certain big boss fight in the Wrath of the Druids expansion, which is still bugged to the point of the player not being able to finish it to this day in the Year of Our Lord 2022, inspired this review, and just when I was starting to enjoy Valhalla a bit more after the initial shock – progress-hindering bugs not being fixed after more than a year is simply unacceptable.

The game also feels "emptier" than the previous titles, sure there are still tons to do around the large world of AC Valhalla, but it all lacks a sense of accomplishment, for instance half of the chests you collect contain the same two or three resources that you have an abundance of before you even hit mid-game, and so you're left wondering why even bother. The story for the most part is a decent one and the characters are not super memorable, but I have to give special credit to the game's side missions or "mysteries", which are almost consistently noticeably more fun and creative than the main story itself. Overall the game seems to repeat the same old viking cliches the Vikings series already covered extensively, which makes Valhalla seem like a bit of an obvious, cheap copycat.

All in all, if the game were technically finished, if it were better written, and if the gameplay mechanics were a step forward rather than back, AC Valhalla could have had the potential to be one of the best titles in the series, as vikings seem to always be in fashion. As it stands, though, we have gameplay that you couldn't call smooth even if you really wanted to, and we have stone stacking to boot. If that doesn't give you completionists out there gray hairs, I don't know what will.

A good game, nothing less nothing more.
It's a really good game if you're a fan of Vikings (tv series) but the 'assassin's part" lack so much of plot.
The RPG combat system is boring and not natural, the movements are too much solid like a robot. The map and the landscapes are the strong point of this game, the plot is TOO MUCH LONG. 80 hours to finish the main story with only few

Male Eivor is a joke of a character, a clown that act not like a Viking but...female Eivor was really insane; you will say "it's the same character only female", nope guys.
The dub and the acting change it all, if you want a strong character trust me, choose female Eivor.
The other characters are...nothing of memorable honestly.
The dream parts are so bad done...it was a way to compete with Santa Monica's GOW but so much worse.
Overall a good game but not worth so much money, if you want to purchase it maybe with discounts

There are two competing experiences here: that as as Assassin, and that as a Viking, that either on its own feels like it might have been a triumph and better than this good but not great Assass-king hybrid we have.

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla effortlessly plants its banner as the best open world RPG available for the new consoles. This Viking epic flexes its gore-soaked, tattooed muscles when it comes to world-building, and medieval England wows with its enchanting untamed vistas. It’s also portioned out at a steady pace and, if not for the repetitive, limited combat, Valhalla could have ranked even higher among our favourite games in the series.

Is Assassin’s Creed Valhalla the best entry in the series yet? Some would be tempted to say so. While the map size might overwhelm some players, it remains an easy game to mainline with the right navigation mode turned on. In fact, the quick load times help to make this an even easier task than in previous generations. This is an iteration of Assassin’s Creed that has a bit of everything from the previous games, as refined as we have seen to date.
