Akimbot promises to be a noteworthy addition to the action and platformer genre. It not only honours the legacy of classic titles but also reminds us why we fell in love with these games in the first place, while offering a modern twist—which would be a disservice to label it as merely a clone.

I enjoyed my time with Akimbot. It is a charming and surprising lengthy game, with tight controls and a well voiced story. As a diehard Ratchet & Clank fan with no new Ratchet game on the horizon, it was nice to just relax and run around a colorful, platform-y world, and just shoot some bots. However from the visual bugs I kept running into, as well as some key quality of life systems I was missing from current Ratchet & Clank games I found myself wanting more, more often than not.

Akimbot wears its PS2 action-platforming inspiration on its sleeve and it delivers on the experience. The screen tearing issues and foggy environments may push some players aside, if Shipset's quippy dialogue doesn't; but Akimbot's brisk pacing and frenetic action is well worth experiencing regardless.

Akimbot is a love letter to fans of 3D action and platformer games, particularly those who enjoy Ratchet & Clank. While the gameplay stands out as the game's greatest strength, it's hampered by a simplistic narrative and some irritating characters, notably Shipset.

Akimbot is undoubtedly a good 3D platformer that honors its biggest and most obvious references, with good world-building, a more-of-the-same narrative and competent mechanics. But it dares little and hardly risks exploring anything beyond what we've seen before.

Akimbot feels like a blast from the past, but one that hasn't aged all that well. Sure, it's smooth, fast-paced and responsive, and there are some nice setpieces here and there to break up the gameplay — but it's not quite enough to stop it from feeling repetitive and a little long in the tooth.
