The open world setting reminded me of silent Hill and the amount of creepy and unexpected moments in the game such as an optional area where i broke into a woman's house just to get ambushed and thrown out when I tried to leave because i broke into her house. another moment had me enter a building with nothing in it whatsoever but weird writing on the walls then once I left I entered a nightmare with giant eyeballs following my movement. Or a creepy ass apartment that is infested...with giant spiders! It's random things like this that are amazing to experience in a horror game. I'm glad I got this one Expand

The only downside is that you cannot keep an inventory with weapons or you cannot keep track of which house you visited or a simple way point. The game has some power ups which come too little too late and an arena mode to kill monsters. If there is a second game I would like to see the alien looking enemy more since I thought he would be the final boss but at the end it wasn't. Expand

Bravo for the devs. It could use of a little improvements : the storyline , characters and the ending could’ve been more developed, the use of inventory to carry weapons (at least one crowbar or something) (there too scattered ), some of the codes/puzzles were jarring to figured out , others were ok. Other than that , a great spooky Expand

The graphics aren't next gen but aren't so horrible that it takes away from the experience. The best part of the game is the music, it sets the tone and adds to the creepiness. The story was interesting enough and I enjoyed the twist at the end. Overall Hanwell is worth the cheap price of admission. It got my heart racing on more than one occasion. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hello and a very good afternoon,

I finished "Welcome to Hanwell" yesterday evening and overall I think the game is...decent

To the developer's credit, Hanwell, to my understanding, was created on a lower budget and for what it is, I think the game deserves a 7.5 rating. Not bad, actually. There are a couple of "misses" to the game's storyline; there's limited background about the characters, scenery and agenda of the game. The proverbial storyline is reticent of a Resident Evil, Silent Hill type environment whereas an epidemic or an outbreak has wiped the town's population, and the protagonist is left to survive. Unfortunately, there's little development to the main character and storyline which left me salivating for an explanation to Hanwell's misery. The game's map is wide with free roaming capabilities, collectibles and plenty to explore. The game does, however, deviate from the storyline at times with collector items that apparently unlock more backstory on the wretched doctor responsible for Hanwell's demise. I would rather have the storyline more drawn out with cut scenes and other effects than to waste time collecting useless unexplained items scattered tirelessly throughout the map. Not to mention, there's so many of these uncanny items to find that the hunt becomes redundant and tiresome.

If there's one thing I will credit the developers on is their ability to scare the hell out of you! Hanwell is a scary game, especially with a fine sound system connected to your television and the lights off. The game is creepy, period, the monsters put up a decent fight and the fluctuation of weather changing adds a beautiful time-elapsing element to the game. Gory graphics along with "edge of your seat" surprises keep players on eggshells. You can never get too comfortable playing Hanwell. The monsters are agile, quick and tough to kill. I would also suggest an improvement to the weapons available for the player.

Critics from other sites scored Welcome to Hanwell with a low rating, but I'll give the game the benefit of the doubt and go with a 7.5 overall score. It's a decent game to play for $20 as long as you don't expect too much out of it. An improvement to the game's storyline, characters and a couple of other annoying elements and Hanwell is easily a 9.0. The potential for a popular franchise is there, but the game has far too many misses to compete as an elite title. Nevertheless, the developers of Hanwell deserve praise for their creativity and ability to scare the hell out of the player. The game's ending dropped Hanwell at least 1.5 points. Plus, the fighting system needs some improvement.

Overall, this game is worth the $20 if you're looking for a decent horror game to play and enjoy the thriller ride of ghostly monsters pursuing you. However, the game doesn't really shock and awe you like it should but is deserving of a slightly above-average rating for it's effort.

    Welcome to Hanwell
    A Nice Surprise
Welcome to hanwell is 3 hour long horror game that starts off in an underground room with a roided out monster walking around..
And at first I thought this is just going to be some generic try hard outlast wanna be..
I felt a giant lack of polish, the beginning section felt super mediocre..
and I run into this roided out monster that’s chasing me around as im trying to make my escape… it was tense, but still.. this a joke level of mediocre.. and then I escape.. pick up an axe, deal with some creepy demon girl, go to a house to realize oh were dealing with some crazy doctor..
there are samples for you to collect around the world to unlock an optional mystery door..
I leave the house im in the town of hanwell.. foggy, creepy demon girls crawling all over the place weapons on the ground..
    still not impressed…
and then I stumble upon an abandoned school..
and my perception of this game changed completely..
The foggy town of hanwell is essentially a hub world with collectables and monsters in your way…
The real game begins as youre searching for the 5 different parts of this girls citizenship card to gain access to final section of the game...
Youll be visiting a creepy school, a church, a prison, a power plant and a hospital.. and all 5 of these locations have the same objective, explore, find passwords, codes, and keys, until you can gain access to the room with the card piece you need and then escape…
and despite having the same goal , very location feels so uniquely terrifying..
You have a flashlight with you whose battery runs out pretty quickly and takes like 15 hours to recharge so you have to flash it on and off, forcing you to just push through dark hallways while music is pounding in your ears
you never know what to expect… I had a love hate relationship with all of these places, the church is introducing you to the mechanics and if the first place you’re supposed to go, but each of these places have their own twist to make these locations terrifying..
none of them felt carelessly thrown together
The school and the prison in particular were some of the most creepy and terrifying levels I’ve played through in a horror game, the music is intense throughout, everything is greatly paces as enemies and chase sequences aren’t constantly being shoved down your throat
the game does horror so well.
The story is lacking here, completely uninteresting. and there is a noticeable lack of aaa level polish.. but just experiencing the different levels of this game alone is worth picking up if you’re a horror fan.
I couldn’t imagine what this team could do with a better budget,
    snatch this one up.
    Give Welcome to hanwell
    a 7/10
