The game is getting a lot of flak mainly from people who totally failed to manage expectations. Some of the low reviewers here blatantly admit not having even played the game. I am around 5 hours into the game and I can attest that it is a brilliant sand box experience.

    Pros:

Chicago feels like a real city. It is exquisitely designed and nicely populated with places to see, things to do and citizens who accurately react to your presence and actions

Hacking is simple - in most cases its just a press of a button - however that is a gameplay decision. In the vast majority of cases hacking is not an end but a means to an end. You can manipulate the environment to cause panic, take out enemies, lose your pursuers, create cover and many other things. The sense of control I got is unique to this game.

The online is very novel especially when you get to invade another person's game and try not to get detected while profiling him. Its a very interesting mechanic of cat and mouse. The fact that you can get invaded at any time creates a sense of suspense although, to be sure, the goal of the invader is never to assassinate you so grieving is kept to a minimum.

    Cons

Driving is a tad too slippery although I am getting used to it. Also - you cannot shoot while driving. Presumably this is to focus more on hacking the environment in order to take out pursuers or victims. However its still a regrettable decision.

The story is not that interesting so far. As is usual with these open world games which involve killing countless innocent people with very little consequences it is hard to identify with the plight of the main protagonist.

This game has some awesome story telling and I feel close yet so far from Aiden.... The scenery is not the best but still spectacular, I mean its a living breathing metropolis. Living in Minneapolis, I feel like i'm in my own back yard. Always room for improvement though, and to be completely fair, driving needs some tweaks.

Don't listen to alot of these user reviews, the official ones are more reliable because they played the whole game, and the complainers played it for like 3-6 hours.
I played this for quite awhile, and I gotta say, Great Game!, though the driving machanics are kinda bad, and the menu's are a bit of a mess,

I would say that this game is probably one of the best games of 2014 to date.

Its like GTA V and Assassin's Creed had a love child, then that child had a love child with Need For Speed Most Wanted.

The story is pretty engaging, and the open world really feels very lively.

Not to mention -- this game is HARD. If you are looking for a challenge, this is definitely the right game for you.

I find the hacking to be fun and a nice option over running and gunning to complete missions. I have completed entire missions without even entering the area by simply hacking.

It looks to me many of the negative reviews are by those who just don't like Ubisoft to begin with. It might help if people stopped comparing it to GTA5 or Assassin's Creed as this is it's own game.

The graphics are good but not great, the hacking while simplistic puts a nice twist on gaining money and information as well as alternate ways to complete missions. The descriptions that pop up during facial recognition get repetitive but what do you expect with such a large in game population? Random encounters are frequent and can be a nice distraction from the main story line adding length to the game. Yes, the story is generic but still engaging.

At the end of the day I would recommend buying this.

However, I admit the game is flawed, it has several glitches and bugs and the driving reminds me of a poor GTA V clone. But the difference between GTA V and Watch Dogs is the fact that Watch Dogs has an interactive world, while GTA V has shooting and storytelling. People also complain about the story in Watch Dogs, but to me personally the story is not lackluster at all. Besides, if you were to get bored from a typical story mission, you could drive 30 km in the other direction and rob a store. Did I mention the multiplayer aspect and being able to hack other players? This game has focused on the hacking and multiplayer aspect instead of focusing on driving and a memorable story. Some people will enjoy this, others will undeniably hate it. IT IS COMPLETELY SUBJECTIVE. But giving it a 0/10 is moronic, and frankly juvenile. I have only experienced one 0/10 game and that is RAMBO THE VIDEO GAME. If you seriously believe that Rambo the video game and Watch Dogs deserve the same score, then you must take a hard look in the mirror. And if you climbed aboard the Ubisoft Hype Train two years ago when this game was announced and was disappointed by the final product, then that is your own fault, not the developer`s fault!

Watch Dogs is a beautifully made game. There is much to do and explore. I hear people complaining about the driving mechanic, It is a bit off at first but after a half and hour of playing, you get used to it.
The other thing I noticed in this game is the amount of Illuminati symbolism for all you conspiracy theorists out there. I would say this game is worth buying and playing. I am enjoying it.

In no way does this game have bad graphics and to hate the game for not looking how you want it to is stupid and childish. Now if you are somewhat mature and can make decisions for yourself you might find this is the perfect game for you. It has a great story and the characters are actually likable. The city feels so alive with every npc having their own personality and reacting like someone would in real life. The game has great ai and the gameplay is fantastic with the hacking adding a whole new level of strategy. I also noticed unlike other open world games this one can be changing at times especially with the second to last mission and the mission "by any means necessary". As for people comparing this to gta just stop. Gta was a pretty big let down with everything except the story. The world was bland and they promised smart ai that would interact with you but that was a complete lie. Gta 5's ai was worse then the ai in gta 4 and the multiplayer is a mess and is still missing stuff they promised back in September of 2013. This game just like all other games has its flaws too. The two biggest being the driving and the world invasion and how it punishes for turning off the ability for people to invade you. This game feels solid and so far its the best next gen game that has come out in my opinion. This game deserves a better score then 6.3 and before you hate the game at least try it you might find that you really like or that you hate it and you just wasted 60 dollars but you'll never know unless you play it. I also love watching some random person running around looking for me when I'm sitting in a parked car right in front of them. "Hey, dummy...I can almost smell your musk from here!" It's hysterical to watch and I can feel their frustration from the other side of the country. Then, when they do discover you...it's on. I had one situation where I drove my car off a bridge, jumped out of the car in mid air and landed near a few docked boats. The guy chasing me followed my lead and a boat chase ensued that resulted in a hacked bridge and my getting shot to pieces. The multiplayer racing is also fun and totally unpredictable (but in a good way). The world is rediculously detailed and alive. I guess I wish there was a little more verticality, a few more things to hack, and shooting while driving, but those are small gripes for a game that never loses my attention. It's been a long time since I last itched to get home from work to play a game. When my wife starts getting pissed at how little attention I am giving her, that's when you know it's good. Expand

Comparing it to GTA V I would give Watch Dogs the nod as far as actual gameplay goes. The missions seem more interesting on WD for the most part, though it's close. But, GTA V does have a better overall story and more interesting characters.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Such a bad User Score due to the over complaining "wannabe" critics that are berating this game so badly.

    For Starters-
You get the people that hate the game for the graphics, now i don't get this at all.
The graphics them self are just purely beautiful, and if you hate on them it's either your consoles fault or there is seriously something wrong with you in general.

Then.. you get the people that hate on the game for not offering a very good storyline or with very good voice actors or a well written script.
The game itself actually tries its best to pull you in, yes it has some parts to where it would seem a bit too bland, but Ubisoft actually did a really great job compared to the other "rushed" games that they've had in the past.
This game wasn't rushed, neither was it underdeveloped either, they actually took the time to make sure that the game you're getting isn't the proverbial trash that you would see now a days with games that hadn't put anything to nothing at all to developing a game.

Then you have the people that complain about the game not working at all for their system.
You can find many answers to seek help for your problem, but obviously if the game can't run on your console then it's not the games fault.

Take a look at all of the recent patches, fixes, and updates that they've been releasing lately.
They've fixed the game up so much, you couldn't tell how much of a mess it was at release.
For all those who returned this game just because it had a few minor "problems" with it, then shame on you.

For those of you actually wanting a real review out of this game, then here it is.

The Story stars out by showing you the life of a brilliant hacker named Aiden Pierce whom using his skills, along with the notorious hacker group "DedSec" to show the citizens that the ctOS corporation isn't doing their job right with the technology they've developed.
The game goes right into showing you, the protagonist having a "hit" on you to take you out once and for all by a mysterious counter hacker trying to get rid of you.
Two Hit-Men then go after you while you're out and about with your neice and her two children. The problem is, when they had tried to shoot you, they end up shooting the youngest of them all and ending her life.
The first part of the game to where you are able to do anything, is an interrogating scene to where your job is to get information out of the Hit-Man that went after you.
Of course, none of it is working so the game tells you to shoot him in the head. Pretty straight forward.

You then are shown a scene to where there's a dead body on the ground, and one of the gun men try's to shoot you.
Your Back-Up or Partner shoots the guy down, and you wonder where the hell this guy has been since you were in that room beforehand.
You then need escape past the police and get out of the building, but it isn't as easy as it sounds.
You need to make sure you're not spotted, and of course this is where the hacking part of the game starts.
    -
You start off by hacking into cameras to see where your path is ahead of you, and unlock doors that are inaccessible for you.
After you use the camera on the outside to unlock the first door, you are introduced to one of your first "Hacking" gadgets you can use.
    The Distractor.
You grab some electrical scraps to craft the weapon, and throw it towards the other way.
You set it off so the guard is out of the way so you can proceed to the next area.
You see the Captain of the police and a few police officers being interviewed by a news station in a bar, and sneak past them through the back (Or.. walk right in their line of sight and fail the mission... your choice of course)
You'll see a few security guards chatting through a glass door, so you'll want to hide to the side of it, or just not be near it at all.
You'll call up your DedSec buddies, and they'll tell you to find the security guard with access codes to the servers mainframe to cause a "Stadium Blackout". After finding him by hacking a few cameras, you'll have access to a new weapon called "Blackout". You'll select the weapon and press the trigger button to make the whole place go dark.
You sneak past the security guards, and then have to get away from them by using a car giving to you by your partner or run the whole way there (not the smartest idea.. go with the car or a car in general).
At this point, there's a lot of action going on, and i have to say that i was impressed by the amount of it.

After all of it, you can either go on campaign missions, online missions / activities, or.. do whatever you want.
And this is just a small portion of the game.

Added up you're getting MANY hours out of this games campaign alone.
Overall, I'm impressed with the sheer take that Ubisoft has taken with this game, and it was well worth the wait.

Overhyped and underdelivered, but this doesn't make it a bad game.
Yes, it's not next-gen, and after all we've seen years before the release, this is not THE game ubisoft has promised. But what can I say, I had a lot of fun, even if there was a bitter taste of "naah, this could be so much better". But this is also grumbling on a high level if we're honest.
I'm sure Watch_Dogs_2 will be killer.

On the other hand it does nt do anything out of this world, the driving is average, the shooting is decent, the hacking is really quite nice but I am disappointed by the fact you can't Deus Ex your way through with minimal mass murder. This game is a lot like the original assassins Creed, there is something missing here but the foundation of a great game is there, except it is no where near as repetitive as Assassins Creed 1 and has a better **** finale with all of Chicago's technology being used against you rather than a billion English soldiers to counter kill. But for me the camera hacking and stealth element along with creative uses for craftable items make this more of a MacGyver-meets-Batman-meets-Kianu-Reeves-meets-Liam-Neeson story. It's a lot of guilty fun.

The online play is what really madeit for me. Someone could be watching you at any time but there are ways to detect it. The online play gets melded into regular gameplay in a very innovative fashion that could alllmost be considered MMORPG-like. The hide-and-go-seek hacker mode and the spying modes have led to the most fun online gaming experiences I have had in years. It's a hell of a good time, and you are really missing out if you don't try it.

Oh and the UI is killer. Points off for too arcadey driving... it ain't that bad though.

A majority of this is drawn from the fact that I was in Chicago two weeks before the game launched, and driving around the very accurate recreation of the Windy City was a blast! Willis Tower? Check. The Bean? Sort of check. Most of the landmark locations that tourists, or natives, of Chicago would look for are in game. Take note though, some of these locations have been changed to appear differently from their real life counterparts, the bean for example appears to be more of a curved Cheerio. Nonetheless, it's all for the fun of the game.
What about the meaningful things? The reasons most people buy video games at least. The story is actually fairly engaging, and the characters are decently done. I found myself disliking certain characters very much (as was intended) and couldn't wait to get the chance to "off" them. The main character, who is not necessarily a protagonist, was interesting, but I not too extremely developed. All you can grasp is he is an overly protective uncle with violent tendencies and dark connections.
Once you complete the story, there are a few select activities to do around the city, but most dry up and become stale, leaving little reason to play beyond the main story, aside from the entertaining free roam multiplayer where there are laughs abound. The gun play and driving are solid and all around fun. The innovative use of hacking made roaming around more enjoyable than many games. I found myself constantly raising bridges and trying to jump sports cars onto the train tracks. Little fun things such as this are what provide the true endgame fun. Ultimately, this game is well worth the $60, even if it is not the GOTY is was presented as being, it is still well enough entertaining and full of solid gameplay.

Its no secret that there was an astounding amount of hype surrounding this game, and as a result of this it seemed that it was destined to be poked at with the sticks of many gamers, all disappointed that it couldn't deliver what was supposed to be a genre defining experience. Perhaps these expectations were a little unfair however, as Watch_Dogs is by no means a bad game, but a good game that's trapped in the unforgiving minds of the masses, to be forever known as "The game that could, but didn't."

When I booted up my PS4, and excitedly inserted the game disc, I came to the realisation that in order to enjoy this game to the fullest extent, I'd have to completely put aside the hype, disappointment, and subsequent negativity surrounding the title, and play it as though I was delving head first into something I knew nothing about, aside from the basics. I'm glad I did.

I was instantly aware that, even though the graphics weren't what was originally promised, they were some of the best I had seen so far in my gaming life. While they weren't jaw dropping, certain things, like Aidens jacket billowing in the breeze, made me realise, perhaps for the first time, that we can all be excited about what this console generation can do in the future. The fully realised world of Chicago was rich full of things to do, whether it be sticking to the campaign, getting lost among the games many side missions, or simply whipping out your, (seemingly forever charged) smartphone, and getting a small insight as to how the everyday citizens of this virtual Chicago choose to live their lives. I was never bored during this venture, and the overall quantity of tasks to complete is something that I think shouldn't be overlooked, and while certain tasks may start to become repetitive after awhile, the level of fun these tasks provide far outweighs the feeling of frustration one may acquire by the repetitive nature.

The story is a typical, yet heartwarming tale of a man seeking forgiveness, from whom is not always clear, and the constant desire to blame Aiden for all of his misfortune is often outweighed by the sense of empathy you feel toward him as the story unfolds. The voice acting, for the most part, is right on point, never failing to draw in the player, making the experience all the more powerful and believable, leaving a lasting impression long after the games conclusion. While Aidens voice in particular was grainy and slightly overdone in todays entertainment, it worked for the premise and what Ubisoft was trying to deliver.

Unfortunately, there were some aspects to Watch_Dogs that weren't executed quite as well as others, like the driving. At first the driving was a little hard to grasp, and with games such as GTA V dominating the landscape, poor driving mechanics in open world games are no longer out of the ordinary, and when first jumping behind the wheel in Watch_Dogs, it can be rather annoying to have to adapt to the sub-par level of driving that's available when GTA V has set the bar so high. Over time I found I got the hang of it, but it still never felt as smooth and satisfying as it did with Rockstars mega-hit.

The inability to shoot while driving was also a little frustrating, I lost count just how many times I was flying down the highway, fast approaching my enemies car with the objective to "take them down," when I pushed R1 with the expectation to unleash a load of bullets, like in so many other games of its kind, only to be annoyingly reminded that this command was futile. Its not all bad, however, as without the ability to shoot through the windows, it forces you to take advantage of Watch_Dogs signature move; Hacking. From traffic lights to steam pipes, the objects you can hack in the game are aplenty, all with a unique result that is sure to leave a satisfying after taste as you take down your foes.

Hacking is not just for these instances, it has a hand in every aspect of the game, almost anything electronic can be hacked, including electronic billboards that deliver a random message each time they're hacked, most of which are easter eggs referencing all forms of entertainment from other games, to viral videos on YouTube. I spent a lot of time hacking these billboards, a smile planted on my face as I appreciated the developers dedication and senses of humour.

    FINAL SAY;
While it might not go down as "genre defining," Watch_Dogs is a solid entry into the next-gen landscape, especially when "big" games are few and far between at this stage of its life-cycle. Full of content, and with a story that gets deeper and more exciting the further you play, its bound to demand the attention of most who play it, and to those who play expecting nothing more than a fun time with a good game, its sure to have you as excited about the inevitable sequel as I was after the final credits rolled

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Technology advances day by day. New things are invented and old things are improved. Cars are capable of parking themselves and the phones we use today are practically mini computers. Imagine being a top hacker, capable of hacking bank accounts within seconds, controlling stoplights and bridges, and causing blackouts on an entire city block. Movies can give us this experience but they’re unable to give us a truly immersive experience. Watch dogs grants you this option giving you all the power by putting you in the shoes of a hacker named Aiden Pierce in a not too distant future in the city of Chicago.
Aiden Pierce is a hacker turned vigilante after he abruptly quits during one of his hacking jobs and runs into another rival hacker that has it out for him. They find out about Aiden and go after his family. Someone close to him is killed in an orchestrated accident, fueling Aiden on his revenge filled quest. You can move through the city of Chicago by foot, car, truck, or motorcycle. You can also wield weapons such as assault rifles, shotguns, handguns and grenades, but your greatest and most unique weapon is your cellphone. Your cellphone, which resembles the smart phones of today, is the source of all your hacking abilities. Practically anything that seems to run on an electrical power source is vulnerable to your hacking abilities. You can cause blackouts, trigger stoplights, traffic barriers, and even bridges while you’re escaping from cops or a rival hacker. You can also order vehicles to be dropped off close by you and access a map of the city, but of course, not every ability is available to you at the start. Watch dogs gives you a upgrade system which is grouped by hacking, combat, driving, and handmade abilities. Upgrade your hacking abilities and you can unlock any car on the street, activate traffic barriers and bridges, and upgrade your battery so you’re not running out of power when you really need to activate that last bridge to escape the cops. Upgrade your driving abilities and your cars can take more damage, you can slow down time to squeeze through a tight area of traffic, or activate an EMP blast that disables police helicopters. Upgrade your combat abilities and you can slow down time to take out a group of enemies quickly, reload and change weapons faster, and become a true marksman. Finally upgrade your handmade abilities and you can create hand grenades, police scan jammers, and an EMP blast that causes a blackout.
Watch dogs gives you two options when approaching some of the different objectives during a main story or side mission. You can choose to go in guns blazing or use your phone to go stealth. I typically chose the stealth option. There was nothing more satisfying than being able to hack the cameras and tactically survey the area, planning out your moves and being able to take out enemies one by one without firing a single shot. You even had the ability to set traps and take out large groups of people with a well-timed hack on an electrical box that explodes with the push of a button. There was also a sense of satisfaction in charging in with an assault rifle and using your upgraded combat skills, such as the focus skill, which slowed down time and let you pick off enemies one by one before they even got a chance to fire a shot. Either way you want to handle the situation, or even use both options, it’s up to the player. However, you will occasionally run into situations where stealth is absolutely necessary which can be frustrating at times.
The game looks beautiful. I’ve never been to Chicago personally but have no difficulty imagining the Chicago in game could very well be our real world Chicago in the future. The city is huge and the developers used the Playstation 4’s powerful potential to the best of their abilities. The city feels alive as well. People react to your actions; pull out a gun and people scream and panic and some even call 911. Drive around and you see people use blinkers and react to stoplights. The city also has much more to do besides the main story. With side missions such as disbanding city gangs, delivering stolen cars to different investors, and even just helping civilians from petty thefts, the game gives you more and more reasons to come back and play even after you’re all said and done with the main story.
Watch Dogs was a truly enjoyable experience. Although everyone says it was a very “overhyped” game, and I agree, it was just the developers showing their pride in a product they worked so hard to produce. The game overall is great. The graphics are beautiful, bringing a city to life. The gameplay is fun and innovative, and the story is a solid one that follows the game and pushes you to play through. And with all the side missions to play through and future downloadable content on the way, it’s a game you’ll be sure to come back to and continue to enjoy.

The graphics are the best I've seen so far on the PS4. Most of the games out so far look like last generation games. Watch Dogs looks and feels like a true next-generation game.

The story line is passable, but a bit goofy at times. You're supposed to be the good guy, yet you're running around hacking people's bank accounts and car jacking them left and right. The probably shouldn't have made the main character out to be too much of a saint.

The game play is good, but a little too easy at times. I rarely felt challenged by any of the action. The missions are different enough to keep the game interesting.

I haven't played much of the online content. Only part of it is free without a membership. But what I could play was entertaining at least.

Overall, I think it's worth playing all the way through. It's a good 40 hours or so of entertainment. After that, I don't think there's much worth replaying. Personally, I bought it used on ebay and will turn around and sell it for what I paid, so I got my money's worth.

Anyone who hasWatch Dogs isn't a perfect game that can at times become frustrating and repetitive, but it tells an entertaining story with a believable antihero at the helm that, like everything else in the game, finds a balance between hero and villain. The antihero the game revolves around, Aiden Pearce, is a hired gun of sorts out to save the world through violence and destruction. Anyone who has seen Boondock Saints will have a loose grasp on the general story and the protagonist. If you don't like the premise of saving the world through morally reprehensible means, you probably won't find the story appealing.

The game both looks and sounds good. The graphics are technically strong, bringing to life a beautiful knock off of Chicago in the fall. The world itself looks nice, the character models are well done and the models for the main characters come close to looking realistic. The main cast does an excellent job of voicing their characters, while the sound effects are full bodied and add to the game. The one area the presentation falters is in the physics. The NPC characters that fill the city just don't look right when they run and cars, especially motorcycles, bounce off things in ways that arejarring and remind you that this isn't reality, which we all know it isn't, but it still makes you think about it when you're supposed to be enjoying the game. While graphics, voice acting and sound effects aren't everything, they can really help make the experience more enjoyable and they do just that in Watch Dogs.

The gameplay is a fun knock off of GTA with hacking added in. There is the standard stealing cars, evading the police, killing rivals and general destruction and mayhem. On top of that is added interactions that can be used to help evade police by turning traffic signals to cause accidents or raising bridges, along with helping in combat. There are numerous minigames within the game that are varied and fun. They range from hacking based minigames where you try to hack into a webcam or phone to invade someone's privacy (within the game it's less creepy than it sounds, but still makes you feel weird), to combat missions to driving based contracts. Gun combat is fun and there is a variety of weapons to choose from so you can find what fits your playstyle. After a certain point I only ended up using two guns for the rest of the game (a silenced Vector ACP and a .50 caliber sniper rifle called "The Destroyer") but it felt more like I had found the guns that fit my playstyle than these were the guns to use and everything else was terrible. The game can become unpleasant to play at times. Police chases can drag on for far too long and there are spikes in difficulty in some of the combat based mingames. For trophy hunters there are two trophies in particular that are terrible. Traced, which is completely out of your control, and Disc Space Full, which will most likely require you going insane trying to find the Ms. Crumby song. When trophies/achievements are so luck based and so frustrating to get it takes the joy out of working to get them.

The story and characters are where the game truly shines. The protagonist strikes an excellent balance between "he's a terrible person" and being able to root for him to succeed. He does a lot of good through a lot of terrible means. The story is aware of this and delves into it. The side characters and antagonists are colorful characters that range from entertaining to interesting. There are numerous side stories within the game through investigations that are interesting and make you feel more like you're expanding on a rich world than having to run around looking for collectibles.

The online is fun, and honestly funny, though it's not something you'll probably come back to after a while. There are online races, two spying based modes and what essentially comes down to online team keepaway . The two spying based games are by far the best of the group and can be really funny watching how people react trying to find you. I laughed several times at people seeing what they did trying to find me, realizing I did the same thing when being invaded and how I must look.

Watch Dogs walks a fine line very well. There are times you feel creepy hacking into someone's webcam to watch them, and times you feel like a hero tracking down a serial killer. There are times the protagonist feels morally reprehensible, but at the same time is doing what he does to try to make the world better. The cast of side characters are mostly terrible people, but you can see their humanity and understand them as the story goes on. Watch Dogs is no brainer for anyone who likes a dark story, sandbox gameplay and an antihero lead, but also has a good enough story and combat that I would recommend it to anyone who likes GTA type games.

Given the amount of content in the game and a multiplayer that is fun I would recommend Watch Dogs as a buy.

It promised amazing graphics and a deep open world, this is never achieved, but the 18 hour campaign featured here is one of the best open world campaigns I’ve played in a while..
Watch Dogs is a 3r5d person open world shooter game with a dash of puzzle…
You play as Aiden Pierce trying to get to the bottom of his Nieces murder…
The story telling in Watch Dogs is great… Especially when your focus changes from your niece to someone else that I won’t mention to prevent spoilers, but I feel like the transition was perfect due to that connection… it makes you care... it keeps you pushing forward… but at the same time you’re still going after everyone involved in the initial hit…
And again the writing and introduction to each character in the story is so great that you’ll either really love or really hate someone… you feel pierces emotion personally which creates a great deal of immersion in this story..
To get information on locations you have to hack into buildings and severs…
And there’s freedom in the way you can approach this…
Watch Dogs works great as a 3rd person shooter with an intuitive cover system… an easy to access weapons wheel, tons of weapon variety, a great amount of ammo and crafting parts for bombs… a great stealth system to silently take enemies down or take them out with a silenced pistol…
Or you can hack cameras and explosives…
I personally had the most fun jumping from camera to camera, waiting for opportunities to explode fuse boxes, trigger alarms for a takedown set up… activating the grenades inside of enemy pockets…
Many times during the story I didn’t have to fire a single bullet to get everything I came for..
I hopped from camera to camera hacked into the system and left…
Hacking here is very simple and comes down to a pipe type puzzle of feeding a blue line into other pieces and unlocking them. And these sections are the only mandatory hacking sections as again you can just play as a third person shooter if you’d like…
Outside of the 18 hour campaign though is the open world of Chicago and unfortunately the open world is the weakest aspect in the entire game…
Think of this more as a hub world to extend play time by spreading out mission locations, because ubisoft took 0 note in crafting this open world as it has issues in its open world I haven’t ran into since the PlayStation 2….
Cars will disappear from where you left them if you run into a building to start a mission and come back out…
During chases you have to ram cars to stop them or hack the world around you... which is actually a great deal of fun during intense chases, to blow up streets, raise bridges and road blocks while youre chasing or being chased by the police…
But you cant shoot out of your window to shoot out tires despite enemies being able to shoot while driving…
Another annoyance with these chase missions is that if you do get the person youre chasing stuck, you cant just pull them out of the vehicle theyre in… the only way to continue is shoot them through the window or get back into your car and ram them until they get out…
This isn’t too annoying in story, but is highly annoying in online play when you have a random player trying to hack you…
You can turn this feature off, but anyone at any time can enter your world and you can do the same entering there’s for rep, or co-op and competitive fun like races…
But again these are real people... not ai controlled enemies, so trying to get a head shot on someone in a vehicles is much harder to do in this instance…
And then theres hacking npcs to profile them…. To stop crimes from happening before they happen... I personally didn’t enjoy this aspect at all, I found it to be shallow filler and had no interest in doing random chases as again the campaign created such a great deal of urgency that it created tunnel vision for me…
While Wacth_Dogs didn’t deliver the ground breaking experience it promised.. If you can look past those promises for what it actually is, it’s a great game with a great story.
    I give Watch_Dogs
    an 8.5/10

I loved Watch Dogs, although it is flawed in many ways. The game is first in the Watch Dogs which may have caused them not to take too many chances, but just like Ubisoft did with AC I'm sure the next Watch Dogs will be spectacular.

I think it's a solid game overall. While a lot of the more 'adult content' was a bit overdone and not truly relevant to the overall scope of the story, I still felt Ubisoft dealt a game a continue to play, albeit from time to time.

Watch Dogs, as many hyped games, was a let down for many people, who considered it fell short on its premise of "controlling" the city from their cellphone. However, this is hardly the case. These are some of the elements you can hack:

    - Controlling traffic: traffic lights, steam pipes, bridges, blockers, road spikes, gates, garage doors and even trains.
    - Accessing Information: personal cameras, cellphones, CCTV cameras, computers.
    - Causing distractions by: activating lifts, forklifts, junction boxes, making transformers and other utilities explode/burst, triggering car alarms, ringing enemies' phones. Additionally, you can disrupt helicopters and enemies' comms,
    - Invading: you can hack cellphones to: steal money, download music, read text messages, overhear conversations (some of them will lead you to objects of interest or give you a tip on a crime).

In addition to all of that, you can also craft grenades, mines, proximity mines, distraction lures, jam comms, scanners (CtOS Scan). If you're still not satisfied you can cause blackouts throughout the city.

Of course, not all of the above is available from the get-go, they require you to unlock the required skill. Speaking of skills, the skill tree is vast, allowing you to take control of more elements, but also improving your attributes (such as handling, focus, shooting, etc.).

Weapon variety is not the best, you have: melee, pistols, sub-machine guns, shotguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles and grenade launchers.

Now, the main story is solid, nothing extraordinary, but it's not bad by any means. Additionally, you have all sorts of side quest to undertake. Believe me, it's where you'll spend most of your time. Most of them are pretty fun and you'll all of your skills will be tested (stealth, driving, crowd control, puzzle solving, shooting, reflex, balance and more). Online activities are not too varied. Basically, you have: races (which are pretty fun), invasions and free roam.

The music is great, but graphics - and probably voice acting - could have been a little better.

All in all, it's a game that is totally worth checking out.

I've never seen an open-world title with missions so well structured: stealth, shooting, hacking, car chases, everything works great. Yes sure, characterization and plot are certainly not at the top, but Watch Dogs was able to give me lots of hours of fun. A good starting point which bodes well ...

There are tons of side missions and the map is huge. It seems to me the game suffers from a bit of an identity crisis at times; not sure whether to push the areas which make it great (the hacking) further or to return to the shooter-formula. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Watch Dogs was a highly anticipated title for months, and for the most part lived up to its hype. Its story, while good, shot off in a lot of different directions. They were able to keep the story coherent enough that you knew what was going on, but, the ending kind of lost some luster because of how many directions this game went. "Lucky" Quinn being revealed as the person who put the hit on Pierce, I thought, was also kind of a let down. He wasn't prevalent throughout a whole lot of the game, and turned out to be the main enemy (behind Damien, of course). Overall, the story was good, and sometimes gripping, as well as sometimes confusing. Voice acting as a whole was done well enough, with no one really bad or no one really exceptional, with exceptions put on Jordi, Quinn and Damien. Graphics were impressive, outside of facial animations. You can tell they really only put work into the main characters for that. Late in the game, when you are engaged in more firefights, hacking to beat enemies becomes more frustrating, but that aside, the hacking was a phenomenal feature that made you feel awesome. Combat and stealth were perfect. Cars handled great, and in terms of long-term play-ability, this game knocks it out of the park. I still have so much to do after the main game was finished. A great game that may not have lived up to the big hype, but came very near to it. I would like to see a Watch Dogs 2, but, I don't know what the story would be. The end had Dedsec declaring war pretty much. Maybe that will be the premise? Who knows Expand

However, where the game falters is the story. it was so convoluted that by the end I just didn't care anymore and wasn't really sure why Aiden was doing anything.

The graphics had plenty of wow moments, especially at night or in the rain and the sound and music were excellent. Downgrade or not, the game looks great often. A major issue is that you're constantly being notified about side missions which gets annoying. Regarding the same, there were too many to do on a single play through without sacrificing the immersion of the already disjointed, convoluted and forgettable story. For the most part the side missions are decent but with the sheer number of them and collectables, I just ignored them halfway through the game to see I the story would get better - it didn't. This game should have had a New Game Plus to allow me to replay the story and continue with my progression. Maybe a second play through with more audio files would have made the story make more sense...

The online is very intersting. Ubisoft is definitely trying to meld SP and online and what they've done is innovative. The standard MP plays well, the racing is particularly fun.

Overall it's a game with very good shooting mechanics and a lot of potential but the convoluted story and lack of new game plus keeps it from being great.

It's hard to rate, at times it felt like a 9/10 at others a 6/10. A new game plus would have increased replayability and its rating as a result. Having just completed the game, however, my feeling is it's a 7.5 overall. I don't regret buying it, but there's no reason to keep it either.

No obvious ambush scenario? Watch Dogs does a great job of spinning the open world genre like a top and a little bit on it's head. At it's high point it revels in itself and dodges all the popular genre tropes. Whatever extra time Watch Dogs had in the cooker must've been spent refining the quality of the missions and side quests. The latter stands out for it's sheer variety in diversion, one minute you're racing stolen cars through checkpoints where you may or may not have to dodge cops, or deliver under a damage and time restriction and the next you're hacking into peoples private lives at a leisurely pace through peepholes throughout a sprawling city. Chicago is big too, well laid out and easily traversed. Absolutely nothing in Watch Dogs feels cumbersome, and that's the point, from the mission structure at its core to the endless stream of information about Chicago's virtual citizens, nothing is obtrusive to the player.

You're free to ignore it all and head toward whatever you fancy, games of poker, hacking bank accounts, the main campaign, none of it gets in your way and at the same time it never feels overwhelming when it comes to what to do next. Objectives are snap and if you find yourself with a heavy dose of gaming ADD you'll feel right at home either way and accomplished at whatever task you choose.

The character development of the anti-hero Aiden Pierce is compelling at times, but might be the only weak link in the Watch Dogs debut. Overall Pierce is a great character that's relatable and delivers with a voice that could fill more dirt than Shovel Knight. The stone gravel tone eventually compliments Pierce and feels like it belongs to him. What sets off the game's only piece of disarray is the fact that Ubisoft never commits Pierce to the full anti-hero nature and waffles between the many mixed personalities of humanity. Which would be fine, but the plot design is such that we're led to feel bad for Pierce and his poor familial tragedy and at the same time look at him as a hero righting wrongs. It's a tough act to follow when Pierce is running around killing bad guys, maybe cops, stealing millions from citizenry (I literally ended the main game with over 2 million!) and my favorite; disrupting the gang hideout. The gangs provide some of the best game design and entertaining missions in the game, and we always get a glimpse to their activity before hand. Pierce is determined to put them down because sometimes they're stealing from people! And one of the main points of the game is to go after a crooked mob boss. These motives hardly make any sense when the game reflects back on Pierce's motives.

Don't let this deter you though, as the game is great, and hacking everything is brilliant. It had to take the team at ubisoft some time, but the gameplay is great. Cars are the weakest component, but admist an awesome cover shooter, bullet time, and hacking any electronic in a 4 block radius a little loose driving is hardly anything to complain about. The cars, guns, and tasks that involve them are all pretty entertaining. Your character level ups as the game progresses too offering a stellar reward system. There's almost a power system that boosts your tool kit to use better hacks and more control. For instance at first all you can do while driving down the street is trip street lights in your favor. Eventually you can take over city infrastructure and raise bridges, overload transformers and cause blackouts, blow up steam pipes, and drop helicopters from the sky.

It's all handled through a choose your own path skill tree that plays to your own tastes. It's broad and sweeping at the start, but it's also adept at giving you clear choices. If you prefer stealth to combat its simple to see the layout, or if you'd like to toughen up Pierce right away into a one many bull time tripping rambo you are welcome to it.

And that's the last gripe some have with the game. In the end Pierce goes from soccer dad who's into computers to ultimate hacker badass with a cadre of weapons both technical and ballistic. I actually found that all gratifying. I related to Pierce better the more he found skills and didn't come off as a weakling, almost akin to Batman he's capable to deal with any situation and that piece of his character seemed very fitting to me. Currently you can pick up the game for around $30 if you dig for it, and at that price it's an absolute steal. I also liked it better than GTA 5 and can't wait to see what Ubisoft does with the franchise next.

I dis-agree with both, and have found the leading character to be necessarily opaque, so as to allow the player to place elements of their personality over the main character using their own in game choices.
The driving is just as bad ( or as good ) as GTA 5. Motorbikes and high performance cars ( but not stupidly twitchy sports cars ) handle just fine as long as you respect the road.
If anything, the game could do with more gunplay, especially the gang take down missions.
Watchdogs is a highly recommended open world action game, with a long campaign and many, many side quests and objectives. ( all similar to games like Assassins creed series, Farcry and the new tomb raider ).
Buy Watchdogs if you want a dark story and dark gameplay with lost of player choice. 8.5/10 and on my second play through.

Sometimes the game looks fantastic but other times it looks terrible. Overall, it is probably comparable to GTA V's graphics. But, not better. One would think since Ubisoft is such a big company and they are now dealing with a more powerful system it would be better. The gameplay is fair to good. Depending on what you're doing in the game. Nothing really stands out as being great though in that regard. Certainly not much that is very fresh. The hacking is cool though and a nice feature. The driving isn't nearly as difficult as people are making it out to be. It just takes some practice. And, of course, it depends on which car you are driving. Some cars just don't have good handling, that's all. So, choose to mostly drive the cars that do have good handling. The story is the weakest part of this game by far. It's weak, standard, and sappy. It gets a little better as it goes on though. The characters for the most part are forgettable. Anyway, it gets an 8 from me because despite its flaws it somehow manages to be a lot of fun. There are good missions and good side missions and enjoyable activities. Lots of content here too, lots of bang for your buck. Expand

Luckily for me, that made my experience with Watch Dogs a pleasant surprise. It's a fantastic new IP that has a bunch of game changing mechanics; and for the most part it uses them all to the fullest. Watch Dogs has an interesting enough story, but the hook lies with it's vast open world. Chicago has so much atmosphere and I 100% believe that this the best atmosphere in an open world. You have a loads of side things to do that should keep you playing for many hours after you finish the campaign. For its multiplayer, I have yet to properly experience it. Ubisofts servers are being really finicky, therefore I won't judge just yet. Overall Watch Dogs is a solid game that really surprised me. So what if the graphics aren't as polished as you would like and the driving is really mediocre. It's fun to play and that's what counts. Expand

The game itself plays a lot like a GTA game - the controls feel familiar and the game responds the way you'd expect a game in this genre to respond... no surprises, just a clean, predictable control scheme.

Driving DOES feel a little bit off, and I find myself ping-ponging back and forth in narrow alleys and running over a LOT more people than I mean to. I also have a tendency to over-steer, and trying to pay attention to the UI (map, hacks, weapon selection, prompts) makes it hard to stay on the road - maybe it's intended as a life lesson (don't text and drive!), but it makes for a sometimes frustrating driving experience. Using the GPS system helps, and I suspect that once I learn the city better I will be running over fewer innocent bystanders. I think the key to driving in Watch Dogs is to slow down and plan ahead - it will be rare to simply outrun the cops so don't even try... use your hacks and stop their pursuit instead.

Story seems a little bland so far, but maybe it will pick up later. If not, it's still an engaging open-world experience worthy of an 8 in my book.

However, after that, with a few upgrades the game became a blast!!! I am really enjoying it! So far I am on Act II mission 5, and have all the sidequests, activities etc. done in Mad Mile, The Loop, Parker Square and Pawnee. I can't get enough to be honest. There's so much to do and some side quests can be very fun!
The graphics are good but do however suffer due to optimization on last gen consoles, hence the current gen versions to not take the full capacity of what this new generation has to offer.
The story so far is intriguing. From where I am in the game, it looks like its going to play out into something good and I can't wait to delve further into it after I complete a few more thing in the remaining districts.

So far I give it an 8. It is subject to change. The game isn't ground breaking, but still very fun and deserves the credit. Anything score lower than 4 or 5 is just inexcusable just as the reasoning to some low scores. This game could be the catalyst to a better game like the first Assassin's Creed was to the second game.

Great game except some minor aspects like that you can't hack a friend online, shoot from a car etc. If those would have been done better this could have been as great as everyone expected. I myself have enjoyed this a lot and wasn't disappointed at all probably because I didn't wait this like it would be the best game ever :)

    Story-

The game is set around Aiden Pearce, a vigilante. That's all you need to know. The story is bland and cliche, if you buy games for the story experience you won't enjoy this. The game struggled to provide any motivation for the character yet fails spectacularly. If you see a review praising the story, it's probably a troll.

    Gameplay-
The gameplay is basically an open world stealth game with the addition of controlling elements of the world. The hacking isn't gimmicky and is legitimately helpful. Take this example:
I've stealth killed a guy and a different guard spots him. I bring down the load on a nearby forklift to block his path and remain stealthy and take him out. Highlights include several bases of this evil corporation Blume and the gang hideouts which require you to stealth kill the enemy.

    Graphics-
    Not spectacular.

The game starts off kinda slow, introducing you to some of the new mechanics which can be slightly overwhelming when they are being explained. From hacking, to the upgrade system and the different 'powers', but it soon makes sense once the game lets you loose. I think the main thing to do is give it a chance. I had all but given up after a few hours, but I came back to it and saw it for what it is - just some good fun. The story meant nothing to me, so I just saw it as a way to connect the various missions, many of which rely on stealth. People have slated the stealth portions, but if you use the various hacks effectively, there shouldn't be any issues with this. It stops blowing into a section, guns blazing and forces you to think about it.

I should also give a small nod to the online play. I have only played the 1-on-1 hacking, but find it to be fun and not at all intrusive to the main game. You can opt to turn it off so that people cannot hack you whilst you are playing the story, but I found it to be a nice change of pace.

Disappontment could mean that this is not the best game ever as our hype lead us to believe, but something inferior. Something inferior is an "8" game, as this is.

Being disappointed could lead to bad judgement, but every game should be reviewed without bias and trying to keep the already known facts (hype) to a minimum so as not to affect the final verdict.

This game is good. It is a great new IP with a lot of new ideas. Most of them are used in a great way, but ultimately it feels as though it could have been so much more. It feels somewhat like the first Assassin's Creed. The controls are excellent (even the driving, it just takes some getting used to) the traffic is at the correct density so as to serve the main gameplay. The hacking opens up new horizons. It makes the car chases tense and makes you feel like a true bad ass. It has a much more thought-out "escape from the cops" and when you escape them for example by train, it feels exactly as it is supposed to feel (as you've seen in countless movies).

It has its faults, as there are too many missions that play out quite the same and also the main character is horseSH*T. I am of the few that liked the larynx-illness-voice but as far as character depth is concerned, he is flat and shallow. I liked the main missions a lot because they give you a lot to play with, which is tha main ingredient for a sandbox game and also has great cover/shooting mechanics with some great weaponry.

Besides the script which could be a lot better, the other thing that bothered me is the bugs. This game has more game breaking bugs than BF4 when it was released and that's saying something. Even after the patch (1.02) they still got a LOT of work to do. That is unacceptable for a released game and even more for a game that claims to take its time for extra polishing. I don't mind when I see objects flying or defying the rules of nature, but I do mind when I see my investment on the game (about 30 hours) to vanish when i reach such bugs as the aforementioned. Unacceptable. There should be penalties for game companies for such things to protect us as customers.

I hope in a more mature sequel.

Cops are dull as well, they love to shoot over than arrest and crash their cars to other cars or walls, they have no life. Watch Dogs is a fun open world experience. However, the repetitive chases and the formulaic gameplay tend to get tedious and boring after a while. As such, you might want to enjoy the different multiplayer experiences and take frequent breaks to just roam around the city.

It’s a bold first step on the new terrain for Ubisoft. The game is enjoyable, offers some interesting mechanics and lasts for long enough, but is bland as a whole. The characters lack personalities, the city could use more distinctness and the story is instantly forgettable. [07/2014, p.46]
