    What pulls this game up:
    1) It's Wasteland (AKA Old school Fallout)
    2) The story is flexible... decisions matter
    3) The character generation and individuality
    4) The replayability... if you can stomach the bugs

    Verdict... It should be much better after patches, but the graphics and sound will still not pull it above an 8. With that in mind I'll give it a 7 even though in its current state it is a 5 or 6.

    Story 10, graphics 6, technical state 2. Game keeps crashing (a lot), some bugs do not allow you to continue with the quests (even main quests are affected by this). It seems there was no quality control at all. If you wait, for half a year or a year you might have an amazing experience, but at this point - really, really frustrating.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would seriously rate this game higher if not for the horrible bugs. I played almost to the end (returning to Yuma speedway) and it is now frozen in the return cut scene. All the bugs to this point were usually fixed with a reload, on top of the constant crashing bugs, and I could overlook them because the game is that old school RPG, with the fallout humor. This is unacceptable for a full price release to not only have this many bugs at launch, but still gamebreaking bugs this long after launch. Maybe they will patch this 8 more times any it will be playable, but even if they did, I couldn't recommend spending money on this game. If anything, buy it used to prevent the company from banking on this QC atrocity that inXile found acceptable to launch in this state. IF you can get past the infinite glitches and bugs, there is a great CRPG to play through, with extreme replay value (if you can finish it). Unfortunately if you end up where I am (and many others find themselves), then you can't finish it once, let alone want to go through all these headaches of countless bugs just to see the alternate story arcs. Playing it feels like divinity, xcom, and the original fallout games are in a thriving throuple. Tactical, wacky, and built for fun. There are lots of awesome features, items, and flavors in this world. Load times are long, but if I could see what that new peice of Armor actually looked like after equipping it I wouldn’t mind. Unfortunately it looks like a muddled mess of blurry pixels seemingly no different from what he was using before. I can see the game i’ve been waiting to play in here, I just can’t get to it right now in the PS4 version. I want to give this a 9 and highly recommend it based on the game underneath these issues. Unfortunately until they fix the blur, I would recommend holding off buying it, just as I will be holding off from playing it more. Developers have said they are actively working on all the crashes, lets hope the blur is up next.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Even a year on, an abundance of bugs stops Wasteland 3 reaching its true potential but it’s humour and character cement it as one of the best RPG’s in recent memory. The world of wasteland is as exciting as it is unpredictable. One minute you can be helping a group of refugees survive the harsh conditions of post apocalyptic Colorado, the next you’re helping a Knight Rider - esque robot car find its purpose, or kidnapping an AI that believes itself to be ‘God-President Ronald Reagan’. But the world of wasteland 3 is most interesting in the way it changes around the players choices. The world and its characters change and evolve due to the decisions the player makes throughout the game and the repercussions of actions can be felt long into the games runtime. If I had one criticism of the RPG elements it’s that characters in wasteland acknowledge you as a team of people, and I think this lessens the role playing experience. For example, I had a marshal on my team who had a high kiss ass stat and would sweet talk people into doing what he wanted, but I also had a huge, strong, custom character who had high hard ass stat and would use threats to get people to act on his behalf. However due to being spoken to as a group rather than individuals, I couldn’t define the role of each character in the group. I think an improvement here would be to have whichever player who have selected be the person engaging in the dialogue. This way different characters could have different fame with each factions and you’d have to choose who you wanted to lead the conversation based on that. You could implement a mechanic to this where if someone on your team is hated by a faction, it begins to bring down the fame for other characters on your team. As I mentioned up top, this game is very buggy. I didn’t have any game breaking bugs or crashes but I had multiple main missions not complete after finishing them, and I often had team members get stuck in a room during combat, or end up miles behind the rest of the team, and sometimes I had team members leave the group permanently due to actions they didn’t agree with, despite the fact I was acting in line with their clearly defined morals. These bugs caused me to end up save scumming a lot by the end of the game, and I think if these issues were fixed this game would have the potential to go down as a classic. These issues don’t stop wasteland 3 being a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The writing is top notch, the tactical combat is fun to experiment with, and the world and characters make this game difficult to put down. If you’re a fan of the Fallout series this game will definitely have something for you. Expand

    The story has it's points, but the most dissapointing ending i've seen in a game. All of the enemies in the wasteland are crazy cults as well. There are no gray zones. Everyone is crazy. I found that to be really weak writing - everything just repeats itself with another crazy cult.

    As mentioned though the combat is addicting as hell, and deserves an 8-9 for sure, same with the humor and style. But overall this game would have needed more time in development to make it a great game, which is sad. Because I think it could have been really good if they worked more on the quests, the ending and released a game without major bugs.

    UPDATE: Even after the recent patch the game still freezes frequently. Lowered the score as a result.

    As a huge fan of Wasteland 2 i can really see how they improved with the sequel. The visuals are a huge step up, with characters being more detailed and even having close up shots of certain characters during important conversations. There's more variety of clothing and armour designs too, as well as more choice of thumbnails for your characters. The setting is a lot more detailed, with a variety of cities, bases and a creepy desolate snowy wasteland to explore. A huge difference when exploring the wasteland is that you actually drive a vehicle this time, as opposed to moving an icon on the world map like with the previous game. The vehicle also acts as a playable character that fights alongside you and you can find various upgrades to turn it into a real death machine!
    With Wasteland 3 they have condensed various skills. So instead of shotguns, pistols and smg's being individual skills, they're now folded into the small guns skill. Laser guns no longer have their own skill bar. Instead they're folded into 'small', 'automatic' and 'big guns' skill bars. This means that when you level up one weapon skill bar you'll become efficient with a much bigger variety of weapons. There is no longer permanent death either. If a character enters the 'bleeding out' stage, you can revive them using AP and if they actually die, you can revive them with a specific item. This is a welcome change! There's also a lot more items to be used in and out of combat. You can set up auto machine gun turrets, laser turrets, robots, healing turrets etc and use some new healing items like med darts that you fire at injured teammates. There's also a new branch of weapons which fall under the new 'weird stuff' skill. These include things like shrink grenades, ferret launchers and mind control guns! You also now have 'strike attacks' which combines precision strikes with a super move. Basically it makes precision strikes more useful by having you charge them up and then unleash the shot as a guaranteed hit that cripples specific body parts.
    As with Wasteland 2 there is a huge amount of dialogue, now with a lot more voice acting! You also have unique dialogue options based on your stats and there's still a ton of choices to make that affect how conversations and quests play out. The story is a blast and there's many paths you can take, factions to encounter and decisions to make. This provides much replay value.
    Also as a side note, i feel like they improved the tutorials in this game a lot. They have non-intrusive tips that give you a lot more helpful info than the previous game. This will help new players dive into the game without too much trouble.
    Overall the only thing holding the game back is the performance issues, which is in the process of being patched. Apart from that we have a game which improves upon the previous games in a lot of aspects. Highly recommend checking this out!

The overall impression I faced like it was made by a single person within a month, really, you might check a video when a folk creates a simple Diablo-clone in a week...with better graphics that Wasteland 3 has. Why so? I guarantee the reason is in Unity, like the game was ported from Unreal Engine in 10 days in order not to face problems on mobile platforms. Really, the game looks like it was mainly designed to work on smart-phones, not consoles or PCs. The overall graphics, shaders, physics looks like a disaster, a strange circle of light surrounds selected hero, changing reflections in a small radius, some trees were not rendered properly, and I didn't find a way to change camera view. I'm highlighting these aspects that much because of price 50USD for pre-order in steam or 60USD on PS4, hence I assume the game positioned as an AAA contains high-quality sounds, face-animations, in-game footage, but nothing like that. Sounds seems creepy as if they were recorded on an airsoft polygon. I didn't expect 3 face animations and cheap dialogue menu when paid my 60USD. Also inventory, enemies look so cheap as the were borrowed from a free-to-play game. There is no such atmosphere we met in Wasteland 2, In-game gamma of the doesn't really represents wasteland's atmosphere, it's like borrowed from on of teenagers free-to-play shooters. And finally it looks like developers made their game without passion, attitude and attention to details, like I previously mentioned made by a single person in a month. There is no way we can avoid comparison with other games of same genre. I had experience with Mutant Year Zero, and XCOM2 and in comparison to them Wasteland 3 looks so weird and unprofessional as if it came to us from previous century in combat, physics, atmosphere, enemy variation, content amount. Hereby I don't recommend owning this game, better spend your time and money on a more valuable product, e.g. one of those I mentioned above. Expand

    The problem is, it rarely does.

    Never have I played a game so plagued by bugs and crashes. Not even extreme edge cases either, you can tell their QA either doesn't exist or should be fired.

    Among MANY others:
    - Party members that randomly leave you for nonsense reasons: I had 2 party members leave me because there was "too much human blood on my hands"...After I fought a pack of wolves;
    - You see a trap and tell your explosives expert to disarm it? He may randomly just feel like walking over the trap and killing himself. Controlling him alleviates this a bit but it still does happen;
    - You order your dude to attack, he spends the energy and...Nothing happens. No miss, no bullet spent, just nothing. This happens often;
    - You'd better be ready to quick save every 30 seconds because your game is going to crash every couple of minutes;
    - If by some miracle your game ran for a couple of hours without a crash you're going to need to restart it, because while it's terribly optimized to begin with(expect no more than 25ish fps on a ps4 pro) it'll leak itself into a 5 fps slugfest;
    - make copies of your save often, and good luck: I often ran into situations where I had to load the same save 5 times before it actually loaded without a crash;
    - As I stated at the start, one of those saves that corrupted itself during a crash somehow managed to break my entire file system and error boot-loop my ps4. I had to initialize it and lost all the saves to all my games. I am never playing a game from this company again if I see even a slim mention of a single bug.

    On the plus side, the writing's great, the story is entertaining and the concept is fun. If only it worked. Never before have I seen a game that paired such great writers up with such awful developers.

    Embarassing.

    Let me ask you a question first: What is the most important aspect of a game? Being able to play it of course.

    But hey, credit is when it is due, so let's talk about this game's strong points. In terms of rpg experience Wasteland 3 is simply brilliant. Rpg elements, skill checks etc are seamlessly combined with a very fun combat system. With many different weapons, items, special abilities, and a non-linear gameplay, Wasteland 3 will offer you many, many different ways to have fun.

    ...if you can ACTUALLY PLAY IT.

    From a technical standpoint, Wasteland 3 is an utter and complete disaster. Just like PS4 version of previous game, Wasteland 3 will continuously test your patience as you slog through the game's numerous glitches, bugs and of course, crashes. Your initial enjoyment from this game will turn into first, frustration later hair pulling anger and finally nail-biting terror. You will struggle to not to throw the controller to floor as you wonder why the your ai controlled companions disappear without warning. Your curses will be heard from the space as you try to move your character who simply refuses to budge or shot at the enemy despite being in range and having a fully loaded weapon. Your pulse will rise as you wait in horror, wondering when the game will crash and cost you your hard earned victory, which you just spent 10 minutes to win.

    Oh, did i mention crashes? Oh yes. This game crashes ALL THE TIME. In every 30 or 40 minutes game crashes during the area transitions, forcing you to restart your game.

    As of the time of this review, Wasteland 3 is six months old and they couldn't fix this. In fact, they couldn't fix anything at all. Every time developers release a patch, they fix something but end up breaking something else. It appears that developers, despite the criticism of Wasteland 2's terrible launch and subsequent technical problems, especially on PS4, have learned nothing. Was it too much to hire programmers that are actually competent and program games that are, you know, actually playable?

    At this state, i cannot recommend Wasteland 3 which is in a broken state despite being 6 months old. It is no exaggeration to say that this is the most unstable game i have ever played on my PS4. ...well, besides Wasteland 2 of course.

    You simply cannot release a broken, faulty product. You have responsibility to your costumers and long-term fans to do an at least, a game that doesn't break down every half an hour.

    If your game is less stable than Alpha Protocol, it is time to consider a career change.

    Wasteland 3 is an excellent RPG by keeping the spirit of the original, while also borrowing from Xcom. While the load times get in the way sometimes, there is no denying that you need to play this game if you love a great story with an edge.

    Wasteland 3 is a technically and visually flawed work of art. It is a true successor to the cult cRPG franchise, both masterfully written and designed, where the player is presented with a true impactfulness and meaning to their choices and decisions.
