The worst part of the game is the insanely bad voice wanting. It almost ruins the story, but we aren't playing for the story, were playing for all the gory carnage. On that front it truly succeeds. Sure, it needs more content of it wants to actually complete with Diablo, but for a first go that just launched, it is definitely worth the time and money. Expand

This is exactly as advertised a Diablo clone set in the Warhammer universe. That being said, I'm finding it thoroughly enjoyable. The story and lore are top notch, as to be expected. Yeah, it's a bit repetitive but so are most hack and slash games out there. Bigben Interactive also released the 40K Martyr title, and that game has gotten a load of updates and DLC both free and paid for, so I am very excited to see what else they add to this game.

If you like the Warhammer lore and Diablo gameplay do yourself a favor and get on the Chaosbane train. It's a engrossing good time.

I’ve seen this game mostly compared to the Diablo franchise, which I think is an inaccurate comparison. It plays and feels much more like a spiritual successor to the Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance games. And in this capacity I think it performs quite well. It’s a hack and slash adventure that fans of the Warhammer franchise, like myself, will appreciate greatly; from the campaign locations to the enemies themselves, though players who aren’t familiar with the vast amount of background lore may find it less satisfying than I did to crush the endless hordes of Chaos. With a smartly designed skill system that doesn’t stick “reclassing” characters behind a paywall or game progress point, you are free to constantly try out new skills as they are unlocked, which I think was a great design choice. The 4 available character classes provide the typical melee, ranged (archer,) and mage archetypes, and each class does play distinctively. My gripes with the game are limited. The voice acting is mediocre at best. And as stated above, anyone unfamiliar with the background lore of Warhammer’s old world probably won’t appreciate the plot whatsoever. My greatest qualm is simply the manner the game was released: the “season pass,” DLC, micro transaction nonsense is on full display here. Everything that has been split off from the base game should of been included for $60. To harken to my earlier comparison of the Dark Alliance games, Dark Alliance 2 specifically included two extra unlockable characters simply for beating the game on a hard enough mode. I’ve read that there were launch issues with the game that have since been rectified via patch. I have not experienced anything of the sort, so I cannot comment on those experiences. What I can say though, is this game provides a great ARPG experience. I think with better execution, and less focus on creating “extra” content to try and solicit preorders and season pass purchases, etc, would of:

A.) given the developer more time and money to polish the game, increase the number of base classes, unique environments for each chapter,

And B.) given the game a better look than just another money hungry DLC/micro transaction grab that really turns people off, and cranks up the anger induced nitpicking of any little fault the game may have. Ultimately, I greatly enjoy my time playing, and hope that the games upcoming content includes a playable Warrior of Chaos. Or Maybe a Lizardman. That would be sick.

I can't believe the negative reviews for this!? It's the perfect action role-playing hack and slash dungeon crawler set in the world of Warhammer. Fantastic graphics, easy combat/gear management and it oozes Warhammer lore and atmosphere. Plus couch co-op! It doesn’t get any better than this!

It's a Diablo clone, and in many ways I like it better than Diablo III. It doesn't have the name cache that Diablo does, but I like that it's not as gear-centered as most aRPGs - meaning, you get a good amount of gear, but you don't end up spending endless time in your character screen, poring over stats to find miniscule advantages.

Also - no health or mana potions. Your specials need "energy", and some attacks use energy, some gain energy, so you need to balance this. I like this a lot.

This game isn't groundbreaking by any means, the voice acting is no better or worse than Diablo, the story is generic, but the gameplay is very satisfying, and I find the action more coherent than Diablo. You will get surrounded by enemies, but I find it much easier to keep track of what's going on in Chaosbane.

I played D3 to death for years, and was looking for something else. I only came across this game in 2022, but I'm about 20 hours in and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. I also don't miss the lack of merchants. A ton of below-level items that I'll never buy really aren't a loss.

At first, this looks quite promising. The opening levels are diverse enough to keep things interesting and the introduction to the gameplay gives a standard but solid Diablo clone. But the veneer is too thin, and this quickly becomes something that only the most hardcore Warhammer fans will truly enjoy. For the rest of the players out there, this is just yet another Diablo clone atop the veritable mountain that already exists; one with repetitive maps, a lackluster character progression, and dull combat. Not to mention the story. One that is completely without teeth. It's like a YA novel; standard fantasy fare, with some of the worst voice acting in recent memory. This is kind of fun, but there are many other games already that do what it tries to do so much better.

Warhammer: Chaosbane is an incredibly entertaining game but at this point in time, that fun lasts as long as players continue to be invested in the repetitive nature of an ARPG. Right now, the pool of enemies, while aesthetically cool, begin to feel tired after awhile. It takes a considerable amount of time before modified enemies show up and the variety of equipment might not be enough for some players to invest the time it will take to soar to the highest echelons of skill.

A simple, accessible, and fun action RPG that’s particularly good fun in co-op. Generic as they come, but what’s here is well balanced, detailed and smooth in motion. [Issue#164, p.92]
