Way too much repetitive dialogue and ABYSMAL combat mechanics. (I've never felt so underpowered as an IMMORTAL vampire) A game where fast travel doesn't exist and the idea of running through those stupid streets, up dead-end alleys, where stubbing your toe leads to death (thus respawning miles away) just to TRY "upgrade". **** it, I'm out. They've taken an ok idea and kept it mid at best.

There is so much bla bla in the game it’s starts to annoy you. I’ve done all the investigations and they’re absolutely not worth it.

Souls-like game. Very buggy game, constantly crashes. The story evolves on your choices and if you choose wrong answers you lose quests, that means less xp and difficulty in finishing. And you cannot load last save cause there is autosave which cannot be turned off. The story is interesting

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll explain why i gave it such a low rate.

Bought the game last month in the psn sale. Great value and i didn't want the plus service ,i want the game. So after 20 hours the game crashed 8 times. Yeah,8 times. Sometimes the screen frozen. Sometimes the error 34878-0. Sometimes my playstation simply turn it off. Reading some reviews and forums it showed me that i've made a huge mistake buying this crap. The game in general is fun but the lack of respect from dontnod and the devs for allowing such a broken ass game for sale in the market is beyond my imagination. If i could,i would ask for i refund but here i am,without my money, without the game and with ZERO RESPONSES from dontnod, focus or vampyr game twitter account.

No,don't buy this bomb. Stay away.

I understand that many critics are just lazy shills who provide good reviews in exchange for financial and other rewards, I expect it.

But the disparity between the critic's consensus of 70 and the reality of slogging through a god-awful, abhorrent mess has never been starker.

I'm holding out for at least a handful of great PS5 games til I upgrade, and picked this up only because there was basically nothing left.

I finished it, I am ashamed to say. I finished it on the hardest setting purely because I had nothing left to play, and am both stupidly stubborn in finishing what I start, along with being simply unable to drag myself away from this stunningly atrocious train-wreck.

I can barely even begin to describe the myriad abject failures of this self-indulgent tripe, and am too angry at whoever birthed this travesty to dwell on it much longer.

I never thought it would be possible to hate someone responsible for any particular product, but that was before I encountered the cancerous, slovenly, misguided, ineptitude and imbecility of "Vampyr".

    Wow. Just.....wow.

The best that could be said about Vampyr is that it's an ambitious AA game that manages to accomplish quite a bit considering its tiny budget. Unfortunately its biggest accomplishment is its existence, being a complete game with quite a bit of content, but when you look at it as an actual experience it falls apart very quickly.

Let me start off by saying that I couldn't care less about
The best that could be said about Vampyr is that it's an ambitious AA game that manages to accomplish quite a bit considering its tiny budget. Unfortunately its biggest accomplishment is its existence, being a complete game with quite a bit of content, but when you look at it as an actual experience it falls apart very quickly.

Let me start off by saying that I couldn't care less about the generic plot, I truly wanted to get into it seeing as 60% of the game is an obscene amount of dialogue and exposition (an insane amount of side missions). However around 3 hours into the game I stopped trying and just started skipping the poorly acted dialogues, saving myself what I can only guess to be around 4 hours of boredom. The plot is paper thin and the character development never amounts to anything of substance.

The gameplay and world don't hold up much better. London is tiny but getting around it is tedious. Because of the endless dead-ends and locked doors you spend hours just trying to figure out how the hell you can get from point A to point B - the hordes of respawning enemies are also frustrating since you never feel like you are progressing - they always spawn in the same places and in the same numbers slowing you down in the cheapest way possible. The combat feels like it's pulled from an early PS2 game, hit detection is terrible, locking on is a 50/50 bet and due to the adaptive difficulty, all of the enemies level up along with you so you never feel as though you've gotten more powerful.

The game's worst element is it's adaptive difficulty which is based on the way you play. A pacifist playthrough results in endless grind, absurdly long battles and an overall feeling that you are always the weakest around. If you go wild and start killing everybody (which is what I did at one point when everyone was 10lvls above me and combat became nearly impossible) you will quickly start overpowering most enemies turning the combat into an annoying chore untill you reach the end where you will experience a truly absurd difficulty spike during the final boss battle (good luck fighting someone 15lvls above you).

One final thing I want to mention is how badly optimized this game is. During my 30 hours with it I experienced over 20 hard crashes, endless loading screens which drag on far too long and hundreds of freezes which left me guessing whether my game had crashed or was just stuck, loading some textures.

Overall, if you have 50-ish hours which you are ready to sink into a very mediocre AA game that feels extremely last gen, maybe Vampyr will be perfect for you and you'll be able to play through everything it has to offer. For everyone else tho, skip this one, it's yet another bad PS+ free game Sony got from the bargain bin.

Vampyr is a game that is almost great for me, making it even more frustrating that it comes so close to greatness, yet some very odd design choices hold it back and even more vexing is that these have not been patched over.
The graphics of Vampyr match the ambience. The vampire genre has been done to death and the early 20th Century Britain was a great choice of setting. The game suffers a bit from everything being a bit dark and lacking in colour, as well as the repetition of enemy sprites. Given that it’s not a AAA title it can be forgiven for not having the best graphics, however combined with the issues below makes the game suffer more for it.

The story of Vampyr is a compelling one and being set amid the Spanish Flu pandemic made playing this game in 2020 resonate in a way nobody would ever have expected when it was released. It took me some getting used to, as at first so many names and information was thrown at me that I found it overwhelming and couldn’t keep track of quests and characters very well. The dialogue choices are a key component of Vampyr, and there is definitely plenty to sink your teeth into, however I also found it got rather mundane by the midpoint of the game, as I sent a good 50% of my time in conversation, another 30% wandering around lost, and the rest in combat.
In order to develop your dialogue choices with characters you have to acquire clues from taking to other people or by finding evidence, both of which are essentially fetch quests. This is further confounded by the gameplay of Vampyr, which is where I had such a tumultuous love-hate relationship with the game.

The fundamentals of the game is your choice between feeding your hunger or by resisting and therefore stabilizing the local community. The problem I found with this is that by being the good guy and not feeding off people you actually make the game harder for yourself as you are weaker unless prepared for the inevitable fights. Furthermore, it was often quicker and easier to just bite someone rather than pursue their banal quests to complete their dialogue and story. You unlock powers very quickly doing this and therefore have a much greater motive to be a ‘bad’ guy than the good guy. On one hand this may seem unbalanced, however it could also be argued that it provides more of a difference in the choice you make, as you see a visible impact around you when you continually take lives.

However all of the above is greatly undermined and almost deemed irrelevant as the developers made some rather silly choices and omissions in their game design. Firstly, this game suffers badly from there being no fast travel. I don’t understand how this wasn’t implemented even after launch as many reviews have noted its absence. Secondly, this is further exasperated by some bad layouts on the map itself. The game is made almost entirely out of corridors and streets, with random gates locking off sections of the game, meaning you have a tedious journey to get around these and open them from the other side. This is also very odd given that you have a kind of teleport ability that lets you reach certain ledges, but a simple gate seems to be your kryptonite. These two aspects of the game mean that no matter how good the rest of the game is, it will be difficult to enjoy when there is ample tedious travel.

What really brought this game down in my ranking for it was when I reached the final boss and discovered the most unbalanced portion of the game (SPOILERS). The last boss was extraordinarily highly-levelled and upon reading online (yet again!) I discovered specific skills and weapons were needed to defeat it; that or grind for more arduous hours. This is a fundamentally broken mechanic and the cherry on top of my poisoned experience with Vampyr.

Finally, a special mention also goes to the combat. They seem to have imitated SoulsBorne games here but haven’t quite succeeded. Many enemies and bosses to require an engaging amount of strategy, however also suffer from being overly cheap with their attacks (some even summon ghosts to attack all at once) and having inconsistent health bars, in that the damage you do to them is high one minute then minimal the next. The most frustrating aspect is probably how few exp you get from defeating enemies, which made me want to avoid fights altogether, when the game should be encouraging you to explore all mechanics to stimulate you with diversity.

Overall, Vampyr is more frustrating than enjoyable at times. Frustrating because game design isn’t always great, but also frustrating because I can see how great this game could be with a few minor tweaks and a couple of bigger tweaks. The concept and premise are excellent, while I have big grievances with the level designs and minor frustrations with things such as tiny fonts. There is plenty of lore and socializing to get lost in, but this ‘Doctor Simulator’ is hard to recommend

The combat was probably my least favourite that probably put me off. The blood meter system is pretty cool, having to bite people to be able to use abilities which often led to some challenging battles when I ran out of blood. However, other than that it got very boring. Early in the game I had already picked out my weapon choice and the game doesn't really encourage you to try different weapons except from the tutorial. This leads to you using the same abilities and weapon choice through most of the game, making every enemy encounter the same fight. There are a variety of abilities to choose from but only a few of them seem to be useful in combat, there was no point using a shield ability when all I'm doing is dodging and hitting attack each battle.

The story and world was what had me interested. It's such an interesting story that gets set up pretty well at the beginning and you learn more and more as you play. This makes you want to play more so that you can find out more about the lore. However, because of the gameplay I just couldn't be bothered to keep going.

The levelling up system is very unique but was very frustrating slowing down the gameplay even more, You could only level up when you went to sleep, and if you decide not to suck blood from civilians the game is made even harder. If you decide to eat civilians you get a huge boost in XP, but it makes that area of the city worse in terms of health. I decided not to do this which meant I was 5-7 levels below the enemies which then makes the gameplay slower and more frustrating.

Overall, the game has an interesting story to follow and a detailed world to explore, but the gameplay was holding it all down resulting in a frustrating experience.

I hated the world, it was way too large for so few characters and activities and combined with no fast traveling, it was a pain in the ass to run always from A to B and killing the same stupid npcs.
The Boss fight weren't challenging at all especially the final boss.

But what i hated the most, were the decisions and the autosaving. Most of the time, I didn't know what the good or the bad decision was, because I didn't know how the characters would react on some of the dialog decisions. The i choose the wrong option and BOOM the hint was gone.
I am perfectionist and I play my games as one. And I hate it when I cant unlock all dialog options, doors or chests. I was forced to run through this empty world, seeing looked doors and areas I couldn't reach, and I didn't know what i had to do or what i did wrong. It was sooo frustrating.
Some of the side quests weren't completable, if you hadn't reach a specific point in the main quest.

The choice you had to make in every district when you finished it, felt like it had no impact on the result. I don't wanted Nurse Crane to blackmail Elizabeth anymore, but i don't wanted to kill her.
So i erased her memory, of the information against Elizabeth. I wanted Nurse Crane to stop blackmailing her and continue her work in white chapel, or so i thought. Because in the end she just had to die. I was frustrated because, this was not the result i wanted, but i could load my saved game, because you can't. Same with Sean The game forces you to make decisions but don't give you all the information.

The game is simply not good enough to play it multiply time just for the outcome of every decision.

What is with the inventory? You can carry like 20 Weapons and other material all the time, but MY GOD THE AMMUNITION IS WAY TO HEAVY and I don't want to start with the f**king loading screens.

Vampyr is unique. It’s not beautiful, its combat leaves much to be desired and its limited budget shows, but if you choose to turn a blind eye to these flaws, it will captivate you with its mature, morally ambiguous story and a series of dilemmas that usually lack a “right” answer.
